Abstract The present study evaluated the dynamic changes in Sudan low systems during six decades (1957–2019), which were classified based on solar cycles. Rainfall days were extracted in January using data from 42 synoptic stations in the south and southwest regions of Iran. Then, the rainy days due to the Sudan low system were separated from the precipitation of the other atmospheric systems using the visual analysis of the maps. The synoptic analysis indicated that the sea level pressure has been decreasing at all sampling stations from the first to the sixth decade. Furthermore, decreasing elevation to −80 m (negative anomaly) in the 500 hPa level atmosphere from the first decade to the sixth decade, indicated further atmospheric instability and more strengthening of the Sudan low compared to previous decades. The contribution of advection moisture to the area increased within the region at 700 hPa. This implies that the role of the transferred moisture from the intertropical convergence zone is increasing in the systems transferred from Sudan and in the study area. In general, the share of Sudan low precipitation is increasing in the south and southwest regions of Iran. This result is a positive effect of the climate change on the study area.

Abstract Recent literature on grandparenthood in China overwhelmingly focuses on the role of grandparents as caregivers for grandchildren. However, many become grandparents at an age when they are still active in the labor force. Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2011-2015), this study examines the extent to which coresidence with grandchildren affects grandparents’ labor force participation and work hours. Results from our fixed-effect models show that, living with grandchildren has a positive effect on men’s work participation and hours worked, especially for those with flexible jobs. For women with inflexible jobs, coresidence with grandchildren has a negative impact on their work prospect. Furthermore, grandparents in skipped generational households are less likely to scale back in work than those in multigenerational households, indicating a high level of double burden from both work and caregiving responsibilities. Our study extends prior work by emphasizing grandparents’ role as active workers and highlights the importance to understand work and caregiving demands in a gendered and dynamic household context.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to theoretically develop the idea that the intangible value of the collaboration between firms and the banking system can influence the probability of default (PD) on the part of firms and, therefore, their rating. The authors also propose that collaboration between banks and firms has a positive effect not only on the access to credit but also on the innovation activities and on the intervention of foreign capital in the ownership of Italian businesses. Design/methodology/approach – As pointed out by the literature on smaller businesses finance, investments widely rely on credit availability. Tests using data on a sample investigation involving 5,587 firms, operating in 17 manufacturing sectors in Italy, support the majority of the proposed ideas. Findings – The empirical investigation shows that only some aspects of the collaboration between enterprises and banks influence the PD, the investments in R&D and the internationalisation of ownership of the enterprises. In particular, the three stated variables are positively influenced both by the intensity of the credit relationship and by the level of information exchange with the credit system. Research limitations/implications – Further development of this research, as more empirical data become available, should allow explaining why the level of information exchange with the credit system has the greatest influence on the dependent variables analyzed. Originality/value – This paper aims to extend the current understanding on how the local banking system is developed and is able to increase access to credit after gathering all the information about firms asking for funds.

Cyclones play an important role in the general circulation of the atmosphere, enabling the meridional transport of excess heat, humidity and momentum from low latitudes to high latitudes. In the Southern Hemisphere, the area between southern Brazil and the Peninsula Antarctica (AP) is described as one of the most favorable for the formation of cyclones (30°S to 70°S) due to the existence of strong temperature gradient between the ocean and the surface air layer above the ocean and also because of pre-existing baroclinic instabilities. This study is associated with the Project ATMOS  (AnTarctic Modeling Observation System) and explored the role of extratropical cyclones in teleconnections between high and medium latitudes to track the trajectories of extratropical cyclones that are formed in the Antarctic Peninsula (AP) and move towards the central sector of the South Atlantic. The analysis of the tracked trajectories showed that the cyclones reached the central sector of the South Atlantic during the months of autumn (greater number) and winter (greater displacement), while the statistical analysis indicated that the intensity of the cyclones is more linearly linked to the mean sea level pressure field than to Superficial Sea Temperature Anomalies.

This paper examines the effect of satisfaction with firms’ products and services on their capital investment policies. Using data from the American Customer Satisfaction Index from 1994 to 2013, the results of the regression models show that firms with higher customer satisfaction will invest more heavily in capital expenditures in the future. The results further show that this positive effect is more pronounced for firms with less growth opportunities or a high cost of capital. This would include those firms with low market-to-book ratios, young and small firms, or firms in more competitive industries. Overall, this study argues that customer satisfaction is an important factor affecting the firm’s investment policy. The findings provide a better understanding of the role of customer satisfaction which can generate growth opportunities, reduce cost and motivate a firm to invest more in capital.

Using data from the Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study and propensity score matching techniques, this study examined the impact of having attended a community college on baccalaureate recipients’ access to graduate and professional schools in general and how previous community college attendance influenced student enrollment in different professional and graduate programs. Our findings revealed that there was no significant negative or positive effect of community college attendance on access to graduate or professional school or on program enrollment choices. These results imply that community college attendance does not limit access to graduate and professional education and holds the promise to complement the route to graduate and professional school.

Scholarship has explored how descriptive representation translates into substantive representation in American schools with mixed findings. I argue here that electoral institutions condition this relationship between descriptive and substantive representation, with Hispanic representatives elected to serve single-member districts providing better representation for bilingual students than their at-large counterparts, particularly when demand for bilingual programming is high. Using data from urban school campuses in Texas from 2003 to 2011, I seek to assess how the interaction between electoral institutions, descriptive representation, and demand affects substantive representation, here measured as bilingual funding. Results demonstrate that Hispanic representatives, elected to serve either at-large or a single-member district, have a positive effect on campus bilingual funding when there is low demand for the program. Yet, only Hispanic representatives elected to serve single-member districts substantively represent bilingual constituencies when there is high demand.

This research aims to respond to a research gap in the literature concerning the role of market intelligence in export activity. In particular, we examine the effects of market intelligence on the interrelationships between market distances (domestic vs. foreign) perceived by export managers, strategic marketing mix decisions (standardisation vs. adaptation) and export performance (growth in foreign sales and satisfaction). The results of an empirical study using data from a sample of 212 Spanish exporters reveal that: (a) strategic decisions aimed at adapting the marketing mix to foreign markets have a positive effect on export performance, (b) market distances associated with economic, legal, social, and cultural differences between Spain and overseas markets encourage conservative decision making, embodied in a standardised international marketing mix (similar to that used in Spain), (c) however, when export managers have relevant foreign market information and analyses, market intelligence processes reduce perceived market distances and encourage more proactive strategic behaviour (adaptation of the marketing mix), resulting in improved export performance. Keywords: Market Intelligence, Perceived Market Distances, Marketing Mix Adaptation, Export Performance.

AbstractLong-term cyclic variations in the distribution of prominences and intensities of green (530.3 nm) and red (637.4 nm) coronal emission lines over solar cycles 18–23 are presented. Polar prominence branches will reach the poles at different epochs in cycle 23: the north branch at the beginning in 2002 and the south branch a year later (2003), respectively. The local maxima of intensities in the green line show both poleward- and equatorward-migrating branches. The poleward branches will reach the poles around cycle maxima like prominences, while the equatorward branches show a duration of 18 years and will end in cycle minima (2007). The red corona shows mostly equatorward branches. The possibility that these branches begin to develop at high latitudes in the preceding cycles cannot be excluded.
