Abstract Water resources management is one of the most challenging problems of the water sector. The complexity of this problem is mostly attributed to the dynamic nature of the natural hydrosystems, of which the inputs are characterized by stochasticity. The assessment of the impact of alternative decisions on such a system requires a probabilistic approach. It is evident that this is a very demanding task even for a single-reservoir system, not to mention multi-reservoir systems. For this reason, computer codes have been developed since the early 1970s to help with this procedure. Nowadays, these codes have evolved into decision support platforms that offer a user interface to assist the pre-processing and the post-processing. However, the majority of the available tools are commercial and require a considerable amount of money for a licence. Thankfully, a few freeware tools that are based on the simulation–optimization method and with a modern user interface exist. The objective of this study is to assess the performance of these freeware tools. The assessment is based both on an analysis of the theoretical basis and on an application of the models on a simplified representation of the Athens water supply system.

We introduce an open-source software for fire risk assessment named Aamks. We provide a brief overview of the following aspects of the platform: the motivation for creating Aamks, the architecture of the platform, the user interface, the intended workflow for conducting fire safety analyses, the probabilistic approach to fire risk assessment, the geometry processing, the reasoning from the topology of the building (i.e. automatic planning of exit routes), the interactions amongst the moving evacuees, the impact of smoke on humans and finally the results and the visualization.

In this paper, we report on the results of an investigation into the impacts of climate change on the storage-yield relationships for two multiple-reservoir systems, one in England and the other in Iran. The impact study uses established protocol and obtains perturbed monthly inflow series using a simple runoff coefficient approach which accounts for non-evaporative losses in the catchment, and a number of recently published GCM-based scenarios. The multi-reservoir analysis is based on the sequent-peak algorithm which has been modified to analyse multiple reservoirs and to accommodate explicitly performance norms and reservoir surface fluxes, i.e. evaporation and rainfall. As a consequence, it was also possible to assess the effect of including reservoir surface fluxes on the storage-yield functions. The results showed that, under baseline conditions, consideration of net evaporation will require lower storages for the English system and higher storages for the Iranian system. However, with perturbed hydroclimatology different impacts were obtained depending on the systems' yield and reliability. Possible explanations are offered for the observed behaviours.

Manpower training and development is an important aspect of human resources management which must be embarked upon either proactively or reactively to meet any change brought about in the course of time. Training is a continuous and perennial activity. It provides employees with the knowledge and skills to perform more effectively. The study examines the opinions of trainees regarding the impact of training and development programmes on the productivity of employees in the selected banks. To evaluate the impact of training and development programmes on productivity of banking sector, multiple regression analysis was employed in both log as well as log-linear forms. Also the impact of three sets of training i.e. objectives, methods and basics on level of satisfaction of respondents with the training was also examined through employing the regression analysis in the similar manner.

Broadband acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) is widely used in agricultural water resource explorations, such as river discharge monitoring and flood warning. Improving the velocity estimation accuracy of broadband ADCP by adjusting the waveform parameters of a phase-encoded signal will reduce the velocity measurement range and water stratification accuracy, while the promotion of stratification accuracy will degrade the velocity estimation accuracy. In order to minimize the impact of these two problems on the measurement results, the ADCP waveform optimization problem that satisfies the environment constraints while keeping high velocity estimation accuracy or stratification accuracy is studied. Firstly, the relationship between velocity or distance estimation accuracy and signal waveform parameters is studied by using an ambiguity function. Secondly, the constraints of current velocity range, velocity distribution and other environmental characteristics on the waveform parameters are studied. For two common measurement applications, two dynamic configuration methods of waveform parameters with environmental adaptability and optimal velocity estimation accuracy or stratification accuracy are proposed based on the nonlinear programming principle. Experimental results show that compared with the existing methods, the velocity estimation accuracy of the proposed method is improved by more than 50%, and the stratification accuracy is improved by more than 22%.

Simulation-optimization methods are often used to derive operation rules for large-scale hydropower reservoir systems. The solution of the simulation-optimization models is complex and time-consuming, for many interconnected variables need to be optimized, and the objective functions need to be computed through simulation in many periods. Since global solutions are seldom obtained, the initial solutions are important to the solution quality. In this paper, a two-stage method is proposed to derive operation rules for large-scale hydropower systems. In the first stage, the optimal operation model is simplified and solved using sampling stochastic dynamic programming (SSDP). In the second stage, the optimal operation model is solved by using a genetic algorithm, taking the SSDP solution as an individual in the initial population. The proposed method is applied to a hydropower system in Southwest China, composed of cascaded reservoir systems of Hongshui River, Lancang River, and Wu River. The numerical result shows that the two-stage method can significantly improve the solution in an acceptable solution time.

AbstractThis paper presents results of the effect of different translation modalities on users when working with the Microsoft Word user interface. An experimental study was set up with 84 Japanese, German, Spanish, and English native speakers working with Microsoft Word in three modalities: the published translated version, a machine translated (MT) version (with unedited MT strings incorporated into the MS Word interface) and the published English version. An eye-tracker measured the cognitive load and usability according to the ISO/TR 16982 guidelines: i.e., effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction followed by retrospective think-aloud protocol. The results show that the users’ effectiveness (number of tasks completed) does not significantly differ due to the translation modality. However, their efficiency (time for task completion) and self-reported satisfaction are significantly higher when working with the released product as opposed to the unedited MT version, especially when participants are less experienced. The eye-tracking results show that users experience a higher cognitive load when working with MT and with the human-translated versions as opposed to the English original. The results suggest that language and translation modality play a significant role in the usability of software products whether users complete the given tasks or not and even if they are unaware that MT was used to translate the interface.
