Development and Applications of a Wellhead Protection Area Delineation Computer Program

In the last few years, groundwater management has concentrated on the protection of groundwater quality. An increasing number of countries has adopted policies to protect vital groundwater resources from deterioration by regulating human interaction with the subsurface, the use of potential contaminants, land use restrictions, and waste transport and storage. One of the more common regulatory approaches to the protection of groundwater focuses on public water supplies to reduce the potential of human exposure to hazardous contaminants. Under the framework of the Safe Drinking Water Act amended by U.S. Congress in 1986, The U.S.EPA (1987) issued guidelines for the delineation of wellhead protection areas, recommending the use of analytical and numerical models for the identification of such areas. In this study, the theoretical background for the development of one such numerical model is presented. Two real-world applications are discussed: in the first case history, the model is applied to a Superfund Site in Puerto Rico as a tool for assessment of the effectiveness of a proposed pump-and-treat scheme for aquifer remediation. Based on simulation results for the evolution of the existing contaminant plume it was verified that such a scheme would not work with the proposed purging wells. The second case history is the delineation of a wellhead protection area in the Town of Littleton, Massachusetts, and subsequent design of a monitoring well network.

A preventive approach in groundwater protection programs throughout Europe and the United States, and almost unknown in Brazil, is to define the surface and subsurface areas, the Wellhead Protection Area (WHPA), from which a well or wellfield draws its water during a specified time. Overlaying a map of potential pollution sources on the delineated WHPA (Figure 1), those sources which fall within the WHPA boundaries are identified as definite threats, that need to be closely monitored, to the continued safe operation of the wellfield. Given the importance of effectively delineating the WHPA to protect public water supplies, the current delineation criteria, methods, and zones are presented, as well as analytical and numerical PC model analyses of different hydrogeological scenarios' effects on WHPA's size, shape and direction. Numerical models are shown to more accurately define WHPAs by taking into account the surrounding heterogeneous and anisotropic geology.

Various delineation methods, ranging from simple analytical solutions to complex numerical models, have been applied for wellhead protection area (WHPA) delineation. Numerical modeling is usually regarded as the most reliable method, but the uncertainty of input parameters has always been an obstacle. This study aims at examining the results from different WHPA delineation methods and addressing the delineation uncertainty of numerical modeling due to the uncertainty from input parameters. A comparison and uncertainty analysis were performed at two pumping sites—a single well and a wellfield consisting of eight wells in an unconfined coastal aquifer in Israel. By appointing numerical modeling as the reference method, a comparison between different methods showed that a semi-analytical method best fits the reference WHPA, and that analytical solutions produced overestimated WHPAs in unconfined aquifers as regional groundwater flow characteristics were neglected. The results from single well and wellfield indicated that interferences between wells are important for WHPA delineation, and thus, that only semi-analytical and numerical modelling are recommended for WHPA delineation at wellfields. Stochastic modeling was employed to analyze the uncertainty of numerical method, and the probabilistic distribution of WHPAs, rather a deterministic protection area, was generated with considering the uncertain input hydrogeological parameters.

In 1892–3 Freud published his first substantial case history, which concerned a patient treated by means of hypnotic suggestion. For some years this has been one of the few remaining of Freud's dedicated cases histories where the patient has not been identified. More recently, however, two publications independently arrived at the conclusion that the patient was none other than Freud's wife, Martha. This paper sets out the reasons why this identification should always have been treated with suspicion, even if the real identity was not known. Nevertheless, the paper goes on to offer a more plausible identification from among Freud's known social circle. The second part of the paper questions the circumstances under which the original misidentification could plausibly have been sustained in the face of such glaring evidence to the contrary. It concludes that, among other reasons, recent tendencies in controversies about Freud's trustworthiness have the hazard of leading to unreliable assumptions about Freud's honesty being taken as a basis for sound historical investigation.

Connatural alterations can be deformations or malformations discovered in the embryonic development phase of the animal, which can disguise structures or roles of the systems. Congenital disorders can range from small changes, slight changes, serious adulterations and also genetic inconsistencies. There are no apparent defined reasons, and these changes may be caused by environmental and genetic factors. Pigopagus twins are joined at the back, have a coccyx, the gastrointestinal tract may have a single or separate rectum, a single bladder in some cases and obligatorily separate spinal cord and always with sharing of the pelvic bones. The ischiopagus are united by the ventral region from the navel to the pelvis, two sacrum and two pubic symphysis, in addition to a single gastrointestinal tract and a varied number of limbs. Reporting and discussing the morphological and anatomical deformities presented in a species of Squalus acanthias, recorded by LOPES in 2020, is a big step to better understand the anatomy and physiology of animals, which are considered the top of the food chain in the oceans and are in serious trouble. risk of extinction. RESUMO Alterações conaturais podem ser deformações ou más-formações descobertas na fase de desenvolvimento embrionário do animal, podendo disfarçar estruturas ou papéis dos sistemas. Os distúrbios congênitos podem ocorrer desde pequenas mudanças, alterações leves, adulterações sérias e também incoerências genéticas. Não existem motivos aparentes definidos, podendo estas alterações serem causados por fatores ambientais e genéticos. Os gêmeos Pigopagus são unidos pelo dorso, apresentam um coccix, o trato gastrointestinal pode apresentar reto único ou separado, bexiga única em alguns casos e obrigatoriamente medula espinhal separada e sempre com compartilhamento dos ossos pélvicos. Os isquiópagos apresentam-se unidos pela região ventral do umbigo à pelve, dois sacros e duas sínfises púpicas além de tratos gastrointestinal único e número de membros variados. Relatar e discutir as deformidades morfológicas e anatômicas apresentadas em uma especie de Squalus acanthias, registrada por LOPES em 2020, é um grande passo para entender melhor a anatomia e fisiologia de animais, que são considerados o topo da cadeia alimentar nos oceanos e correm um sério risco de extinção.

The purpose of this chapter is to introduce Brief Psychoanalytic Therapy through the case history of a woman who presented with fatigue and a variety of medical ailments. Descriptions are given of the initial assessment consultation and then the course of 16 sessions of Brief Psychoanalytic Therapy. The clinical material represented illustrates both the therapist’s orientation and style of intervention, and the patient’s step-by-step development in the direction of more open, trusting, and fulfilling attitudes toward other people and the possibilities of life. The nature as well as the influence of the therapist’s focus on the transference and countertransference receive special attention.

This article looked at the quantity and storage time of attiéké produced and sold in the town of Daloa. It also examines the microbiological characteristics of attiéké-femme and attiéké-garba from this locality during storage. The study was carried out on the one hand through a field survey carried out on the producers and sellers. On the other hand, a sample was taken from 10 sellers of attiéké-garba and 10 sellers of attiéké-woman. The study found that the women producers sell 87% of their production in the city of Daloa and export 13%. In addition, attiéké can be kept for 2 days at the producers and beyond 2 days at the sellers before their stock runs out. Therefore, a weekly production of more than 200 kg for the majority of the producers is observed. Microbiological analyses showed high levels of germs (MAG: 6.106 CFU/g; Yeasts and moulds: 2.7.106 CFU/g) for attiéké-women and (2.106 CFU/g of GAM and 1.6.103 CFU/g of Yeasts and moulds) for attiéké-garba. Total coliforms and faecal coliforms were only found in attiéké-women. No salmonella was observed. In view of the results, it should be noted that female attiéké is the most contaminated type of attiéké.

Abstract. This study presents the analysis of island induced gravity waves observed by an airborne Doppler wind lidar (DWL) during SALTRACE. First, the instrumental corrections required for the retrieval of high spatial resolution vertical wind measurements from an airborne DWL are presented and the measurement accuracy estimated by means of two different methods. The estimated systematic error is below -0.05 m s-1 for the selected case of study, while the random error lies between 0.1 m s-1 and 0.16 m s-1 depending on the estimation method. Then, the presented method is applied to two measurement flights during which the presence of island induced gravity waves was detected. The first case corresponds to a research flight conducted on 17 June 2013 in the Cape Verde islands region, while the second case corresponds to a measurement flight on 26 June 2013 in the Barbados region. The presence of trapped lee waves predicted by the calculated Scorer parameter profiles was confirmed by the lidar and in-situ observations. The DWL measurements are used in combination with in-situ wind and particle number density measurements, large eddy simulations (LES), and wavelet analysis to determine the main characteristics of the observed island induced trapped waves.
