The comparison of one-phase and two-phase anaerobic digestion processes in the characteristics of substrate degradation and the bacterial population levels was investigated by using the chemostat-type reactors to which starch was fed as substrate when both processes were operated under the same experimental conditions. By decreasing the SRTs of both systems from 10.2 d to 5 d, 2.5 d and 1.75 d. it was found that the two-phase system was more stable to the change in pH than one-phase system. The CH4 recovery rates and COD removal rates in the two-phase system increased by 4 to 9% and 3 to 10%. respectively, although the CH4 recovery rate and the COD removal rate in the one-phase system were slightly higher than those in the two-phase system at the SRT of 10.2 d. The concentration of propionate in the effluent of the one-phase system was 30 to 50% higher than that in the two-phase system; while the concentrations of acetate and butyrate in the one-phase system were slightly lower than those in the two-phase one. The enumeration of the bacteria was performed by the MPN method. The population levels of acidogenic bacteria in both systems were in the same order (108 to 1010 MPN/ml). the population levels of hydrogenotrophs were also in the same order as the acidogenic bacteria in the two-phase system, while the population levels of hydrogenotrophs were 10 to 100 fold less than that of acidogenic bacteria in the one-phase system. The number of HAc-utilizing methanogens in the methanogenesis of the two-phase system were 2 to 10 times higher than that in the one-phase system. Therefore, the one-phase system cannot be regarded simply as the sum of acidogenesis and methanogenesis.

The upgrading of night soil anaerobic digestion processes was studied by field investigation of the performance of anaerobic digesters in existing night soil treatment plants and by serai-continuous experiments with bench-scale digesters. Both the average monthly amount of collected night soil fed to a digester and the concentration of volatile solids in night soil increased in winter. A good correlation was found to exist between gas production and digestion temperature. The COD removal rate in the first digester was markedly higher than that in the second digester. The stirring period in the first digester in one plant differs from that in the other plant. Stirring the first digester for too long a period reduces the rate of COD removal by the second digester in the two-stage anaerobic digestion process. The first digester should be stirred for more than one hour per day in order to promote gas production. Gas production and CODCr removal rate in the second digester were hardly affected by reductions in retention time ranging from 15 days to 5 days. As night soil contains a large amount of cellulose and other refractory organics, some kind of pretreatment of the night soil fed to the digester may be necessary for the promotion of acidogenesis in the two-phase anaerobic digestion process.

Molasses is a highly thick by-product produced after sugarcane crystallization constitutes large amounts of biodegradable organics. These organic compounds can be converted to renewable products through anaerobic digestion. Nevertheless, its anaerobic digestion is limited due to its high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ion concentration. The effects of nickel (Ni2+) on the stability of anaerobic digestion of molasses were established by studying the degradation of organic matter (COD removal rate), biogas yield, methane content in the biogas, pH, and alkalinity. The results showed that there were no significant effects on the stability of pH and alkalinity. Increased COD removal rate and higher methane content was observed by 2–3% in the digesters receiving 2 and 4 mg/L of Ni2+ in the first phase of the experiment. Ni2+ supplemented to reactors at concentration 2 mg/L enhanced biogas yield. Overall, it is suggested that the addition of Ni2+ has some effects on the enhancement of biogas yield and methane contents but has no obvious effects on the long-lasting stability of the molasses digestion.

AbstractThe effect of the biomass presence on the overall circulation velocity, the linear velocities both in the riser and the downcomer and the overall gas hold-up was studied in a three-phase internal loop airlift reactor (ILALR). The measured data were compared with those obtained using a two-phase system (air—water). All experiments were carried out in a 40 dm3 ILALR at six different biomass concentrations (ranging from 0 g dm−3 to 7.5 g dm−3), at a temperature of 30°C, under atmospheric pressure. Air and water were used as the gas and liquid model media, respectively. Pellets of Aspergillus niger produced during the fermentation of glucose to gluconic acid in the ILALR were considered solid phase. In addition, liquid velocities were measured during the fermentation of glucose to gluconic acid using Aspergillus niger. All measurements were performed in a bubble circulation regime. At given experimental conditions the effect of the biomass on the circulation velocities in the ILALR was negligible. However, increasing of the biomass concentration led to lower values of the total gas hold-up.

This study attempted to investigate the feasibility of volatile fatty acid (VFA) production from coffee pulp hydrolyse, and further to determine the potential of methanization of both the pre-acidified effluent and the coffee wastewater. The experiments were carried out in 2 completely mixed reactors, each one with a working volume of 4 litres. Coffee pulp was used as substrate in the acidogenic reactor and different mixtures of pulper and wash-water and pre-acidified effluent in the methanogenic one. The acidogenic and methanogenic reactors were operated at an organic loading rate of 5 COD g.l-1.d-1 and 0.5 COD g.l-1.d-1. The total, soluble and VFA's effluent COD concentrations of the acidogenic reactor present average values of 57.75, 17.00 and 13.92 g.l-1 respectively. Under these experimental conditions, 23% (COD based) of coffee pulp was hydrolysed with a rate of 1.32 gCOD.l-1.d-1 and the soluble fraction was transformed to VFA's with an acidification efficiency of 82%. Total VFA's concentration reached a value of 13.9 gCOD.l-1, and acetate, propionate, butyrate and valerate represented 52%, 28%, 9% and 11% respectively of the liquid phase COD. In the methanogenic reactor, COD removal and methanization of fresh coffee wastewater, pre-acidified effluent and both combined occur with an efficiency of 85% to 95% respectively, with a characteristic biogas composition of 80% CH4 and 20% CO2. These results show that a humid coffee ‘Beneficio’ processing daily 23 tons of cherry coffee (fresh fruit), equipped with a two stage anaerobic digestion process could generate at least 1,886 CH4 m3.d-1. This represents an increase in methane production by a factor 3 to 5 compared to a ‘Beneficio’ using anaerobic digestion only for the treatment of its wastewater.

Industrial wastewater treatment using Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) can improve effluent quality at lower cost than that obtained by other biological treatment methods. Further optimization is still required to enhance effluent quality until it meets standard quality and to reduce the operating cost of treatment of high strength organic wastewater. The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of pretreatment (pH adjustment and prechlorination) and aeration time on effluent quality and COD removal rate in tapioca wastewater treatment using SBR. Pretreatment was done by (1) adjustment of tapioca wastewater pH to control (4.92), 7, and 8, and (2) tapioca wastewater prechlorination at pH 8 during hour using calcium hypochlorite in variation dosages 0, 2, 4, 6 mg/L Cl2, SBR operation was conducted according to following steps: (1) Filling of pre-treated wastewater into a bioreactor during 1 hour, and (2) aeration of the mixture of tapioca wastewater and activated sludge during 8 hours. Effluent sample was collected at every 2-hours aeration for COD analysis. COD removal rate mathematical formula was got by first deriving the best fit function between aeration time and COD. Optimum aeration time resulting in no COD removal rate. The value of COD effluent and its removal rate in optimum aeration time was used to determine the recommended of operation condition of pretreatment. Research result shows that chosen pH operation condition is pH 8. Prechorination can make effluent quality which meets standard quality and highest COD removal rate. The chosen Cl2 dosage is 6 mg/L.

In the presence of acetic acid, the effects of pH, processing time, addition of Fe2+ and H2O2 on dye wastewater treatment were studied. Experimental results showed that in the presence of acetic acid, when the pH value was 4, the processing time was 30.0min, addition of ferrous sulfate was 4.8g/L, and addition of hydrogen peroxide was 56mL/L, the treatment effect was the best, COD removal rate reached 51.0%. Further studied of the effect of the presence of acetic acid on Fenton’s oxidation of dye wastewater, the results showed that without of acetic acid, the COD removal rate was higher than that with acetic acid. And the effect of Fenton's reagent on oxidation of dye substances was interfered by the presence of acetic acid.

This study investigated the effects of 2,4-dichlorophenol on reduction of activated sludge in membrane bioreactors. Significant inhibition on sludge growth and slight reduction in COD removal were observed at higher 2,4-dichlorophenol dosages. The deviation between relative specific COD removal rate (q/q0) and relative specific growth rate (μ/μ0) suggested that a minimum 2,4-dichlorophenol concentration was required for uncoupling of anabolism and catabolism. With the increase of the dosage of 2,4-dichlorophenol, stepwise improvement of biomass bioactivity and the reduction in activated sludge production were achieved simultaneously. Compared with the control bioreactor, the peak distribution of floc size in the 2,4-dichlorophenol added bioreactor shifted to a range of smaller floc size. Besides, addition of 2,4-dichlorophenol caused little variation of microorganism community structure and SVI value of the sludge. After 24-hour operation, the residue 2,4-dichlorophenol concentration in the bioreactors was reduced to a negligible level.

The aim of the study was to determine the performances of a combined ozone/anaerobic digestion system for waste activated sludge reduction. The objective was the estimation of the process efficiency and stability when keeping constant influent flow while increasing recycled chemically treated flow. The ozonation step consisted in a partial oxidation (0.16 g O3/g SS) of the anaerobic mesophilic digested sludge. Chemical treatment of digested sludge resulted in a threefold COD solubilization and a decrease of SS of 22%. Some of the advantages of digested sludge ozonation were: deodorization, better settlement and a reduction in viscosity. However there were drawbacks: foaming during ozonation and, at high ozone doses, poorer filterability. The anaerobic digestion was carried out over 6 months with an increasing recycling of ozonated flow. Suspended solids removal rate and COD removal rate were compared with initial operating conditions for the biological reactor and the whole combined process. The optimum recycling rate was 25% with increases of SS removal and COD removal of 54% and 66% respectively when considering the combined process; corresponding to a decrease of the hydraulic retention time from 24 days to 19 days.
