This article addresses the relationship between space and investment in two forms of popular culture as part of an assessment of urban development in Brazil’s largest city, São Paulo. Through a selected braiding of ethnographic reflections, urban histories, and social theories of speculation, I argue that the youth cultural practices of hip hop and “saraus” or open microphone talent shows have influenced the flows of investment and the social geography of expressive culture in São Paulo. Consequently, the value of the marginalized periphery (“periferia”) has changed and with it the overall conceptualization of São Paulo.

ABSTRACTThe present work has as object of study the Penitentiary Security ex-Agent (ex-ASP) who is in prison regime by the crime of passive corruption (Article 317 - Brazilian Penal Code). The study answered the following questions: 1) What do staffs and ex-staffs think on the practice of corruption exercised between institutional staffs and some prisoners inside the Sao Paulo's Prisons? 2) What are the representations for the conduct of the ASP's? 3) How do these representations explain the inclusion of some staffs in illegal activity by way of corruption? What is the relationship between corruption and violence? This is a qualitative research with questionnaires and interviews script sticking to the viewpoint of those involved in acts of corruption (the ex-ASP's) and the speeches of the staffs in the exercises of function. The social representations was used as theoretical and methodological axes to present the explanatory elements (material and symbolic) that guide the conduct of this professional category about the corruption and the relationship of this practice with the intramural violence. Authors such as Pierre Bourdieu, Michel Wieviorka, Alves-Mazzoti, Denise Jodelet and Campos Coelho contributed to the discussion proposed.RESUMOO presente trabalho tem como objeto de estudo o ex-Agente de Segurança Penitenciária (ex-ASP) que se encontra em regime de prisão pela prática do crime de corrupção passiva (artigo 317 - Código Penal Brasileiro). O estudo respondeu às seguintes preocupações: 1) O que pensam Agentes Penitenciários e ex-ASP´s sobre a prática da corrupção exercida entre agentes institucionais e alguns presos no interior das prisões de São Paulo? 2) Quais são as representações para tal conduta dos ASP’s? 3) Como essas representações explicam a inserção de alguns agentes penitenciários na atividade ilegal pela via da corrupção? Qual a relação entre corrupção e violência? Trata-se de pesquisa qualitativa, com aplicação de questionários e roteiro de entrevistas, atendo-se ao ponto de vista dos sujeitos envolvidos em atos de corrupção (os ex-ASP´s), e às falas dos agentes de segurança penitenciária em exercício da função. Utilizou-se as representações sociais como eixos teórico e metodológico, para apresentar os elementos explicativos (materiais e simbólicos) que orientam a conduta desta categoria profissional sobre a corrupção, e a relação desta prática com a violência intramuros. Autores como Pierre Bourdieu, Michel Wieviorka, Alves-Mazzoti, Denise Jodelet e Campos Coelho contribuíram para a discussão proposta.

O artigo se baseia em pesquisa que apontou para novas formas de captação de recursos por meio da promoção de práticas culturais que se interligam à gestão de serviços públicos de saúde na Zona Leste da Cidade de São Paulo, sob a direção de organizações sociais privadas. O cruzamento entre modos de captação, gestão terceirizada da cultura e equipamentos de saúde aponta para uma intersetorialidade inédita dessas práticas, o que configura o que poderia ser identificado como um planejamento social privado, redesenhando formas de atuação e margens do Estado por meio de um conjunto de relações entre os programas sociais e a população em condições de pobreza na maior cidade brasileira. Os bairros da última periferia Leste da cidade de São Paulo conformam assim um terreno de experimentações dessas práticas cruzadas para além das caracterizações clássicas das zonas periféricas das grandes metrópoles brasileiras que apontavam para a precariedade das condições de vida bem como para o nascedouro de movimentos sociais, suas demandas, sujeitos e linguagens de direitos, tal como foram percebidos e enunciados a partir do final dos anos oitenta do século XX. Palavras-chave: políticas sociais; políticas públicas; privatização; periferias urbanas. Abstract: This article is based on research that pointed to new ways of raising funds through the promotion of cultural practices that are interconnected to the management of public health services in the Eastern Zone of the City of São Paulo, under the direction of private social organizations. The cross between fundraising, outsourced management of culture and health equipment points to an unprecedented relationship between the sectors of these practices, which sets up what can be identified as a private social planning. This process redrew the margins of the State redefining the relationship between social programs and policies and poor population in the largest Brazilian city. The peripheral neighborhoods of the Eastern outskirts São Paulo became an experimental field of these practices, more than classical character of precarious forms of life or the place of origin of social movements, demands, subjects, right languages, as they were known specially from the 80´s Brazilian sociological literature. The ‘1st Congress Churches and LGBTI+ Community: ecumenical dialogues for respect for diversity’ was held between 19th and 22nd of June 2019, in the city of São Paulo. The Congress was organised by the Parish of the Holy Trinity of the Episcopal Anglican Church in Brazil and Koinonia–Ecumenical Presence in Service. As we consider this congress a historic landmark in the debates concerning religions and sexualities that escape from cisheteronormativity in Brazil, in the course of this article, we propose to analyse the social and political conjuncture that motivated the event. In a second step, we will briefly describe the structure of the event, as well as its objectives, in order to understand the assumptions that guided the construction of the Letter of São Paulo, the official and public document of the Congress, approved in plenary by the participants. We believe that the Congress and the Letter of São Paulo have political potential, as they claim the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex+ people as people of faith and denounce forms of oppression, exclusion and marginalisation reinforced by conservative and hegemonic religious discourses.

<p><strong>Resumo: </strong>Este artigo apresenta uma análise um tanto distinta sobre aquilo que comumente se escreveu sobre a relação entre imigração italiana e industrialização no Brasil. A elucidação desta relação, muitas vezes, ficou circunscrita ao fenômeno ocorrido na cidade de São Paulo, entre 1880 a 1930. Ao contrário do que ocorrera na capital paulista, mostramos que o imigrante pobre não foi apenas aquele fracassado, expulso do mundo rural, que para sobreviver, empregou-se em alguma fábrica (muitas vezes, de propriedade de algum patrício abastado). Um pouco distante deste cenário, aproximadamente 300 quilômetros da cidade de São Paulo, italianos pobres de recursos, mas detentores de algum <em>saber-fazer</em> tiveram uma mobilidade social e ajudaram a constituir o empresariado industrial na cidade de Ribeirão Preto.</p><p><strong>Palavras-chave</strong>: Imigração Italiana; Industrialização; mobilidade social; Núcleo Colonial Antonio Prado; Ribeirão Preto.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Abstract: </strong>This article presents a somewhat different analysis about what is commonly written about the relationship between Italian Immigration and industrialization in Brazil. The elucidation of this relationship often was confined to the phenomenon that occurred in the city of São Paulo, between 1880 to 1930. Contrary to what happened in the state capital, we show that the poor immigrant was not just that loser, expelled from the countryside, which to survive worked in some factory (often owned by a wealthy patrician). A little distant this scenario, approximately 300 kilometers from São Paulo city, Italian without resources, but holders of some know-how had a social mobility and helped constitute the industrial business in the city of Ribeirão Preto.</p><p><strong>Keywords: </strong>Italian Immigration; Industrialization; social mobility; Núcleo Colonial Antonio Prado; Ribeirão Preto.</p>

This conclusion reconsiders the various themes depicted by spatial and longitudinal analysis, and reflects on the use of spatial and aspatial census data to construct the social geography of Kingston since sovereignty. In particular, the conclusion returns to the imposition of structural adjustment by the IMF-World Bank; the formal/informal split in employment; the persistent housing deficit; the demise of colour/race segregation and the enduring significance of class and pluralism in the social stratification; and the ghetto as a locale of deprivation and violence, as well as of creole creativity. Kingston is no longer the colour–class segregated entity that it was at independence, but it is broken, in a post-modern sense, into variegated micro-worlds of achievement and defeat, danger and safety, often spatially proximate or even juxtaposed. But Kingston is not unique. It is comparable in its employment and housing problems to adjacent Latin American cities that have experienced structural adjustment over the last twenty to twenty-five years, and to an even wider range of post-colonial cities that are undergoing rapid political or economic transformation, including globalization. Two obvious comparators are São Paulo in Brazil, which has suffered income polarization, and the massive growth of its informal settlements since the democratization of the military regime in the 1980s, and the cities of South Africa, where apartheid provided the basis for segregation on a massive scale until the early 1990s. Furthermore, São Paulo, Johannesburg, and Kingston have violent crime records among the worst in the developing world, largely because social polarization is rooted in class/race difference and deprivation. The conclusion turns first to the value of long-run census analysis, before it reviews the book’s major findings, considers Kingston’s place in a wider world, and assesses Kingston’s decolonization. This book has focused on issues of social development and spatial change covering the late-colonial and post-sovereignty periods in Kingston, and has drawn heavily on the census information covering the period 1943 to 1991. The 1943 census was carried out to provide statistical information essential for population registration prior to the first general election based on adult suffrage in 1944, and is regarded as the first modern census.

Abstract Manufacturing in metropolitan areas has been drastically transformed. This case study of São Paulo, Brazil contributes new insights to debates about urban economies by shedding light on micro-urban manufacturing – an activity that, despite its pervasiveness, is usually left out of planning theory and discourses. First, I broadly frame this debate by retracing the relationship between economic activity and urban development in the historical making of São Paulo. Second, I analyze micro-manufacturing as a segment within the broader context of manufacturing, highlighting its relevance, ubiquity, and resilience. Next, I examine micro-manufacturing activities by themselves and point out at their heterogeneity. Finally, I describe the emergence of two unique geographies of micro-urban manufacturing in the city.

Resumo: Em O Capital, Marx nos alertou que a mercadoria tem um caráter misterioso que carrega “sutilezas metafísicas e argúcias teológicas”. Este artigo tenta decifrar um pouco desse mistério buscando decodifica-lo naquilo que denominamos como a estranha objetividade do valor. Para isso, analisamos a relação entre a ideologia e o valor a partir da crítica marxiana à mercadoria, consignada à lógica de Hegel. Vemos que o valor se constitui como razão ontológica da mercadoria enquanto produto do processo de trabalho que carrega uma racionalidade imanente, isto é, um espírito socialmente produzido que se objetiva à medida que é vivenciado pelos indivíduos como uma lógica social que rege as relações nesta sociedade. Isso se dá por meio de “sutilezas metafísicas” na formação da realidade social marcada por contradições estabelecidas entre, de um lado, o conteúdo objetivo das relações sociais, e de outro, a forma como essas relações são vivenciadas pela consciência na sociedade capitalista. Nesta relação entre conteúdo e forma, encontramos determinações de profundidade ontológica entre o valor e a ideologia, enquanto forma social que opera harmonizando as contradições constituintes da realidade social, a exemplo do que acontece no trabalho assalariado. A mediação ideológica se põe como uma progressão imanente à materialização da vivência concreta da relação entre capital e trabalho no salário, de maneira a naturalizar a exploração que se esconde na estranha objetividade do valor que se realiza na troca de mercadorias. Concluímos que a conexão ontológica entre o ser social e a mercadoria é socialmente ubíqua, precisamente por conta do seu caráter ideológico na formação da sociabilidade a partir do processo de trabalho subjugado ao capital.  Palavras-chave: Valor. Ideologia. Trabalho, Capital. Salário.  Abstract: In Capital, Marx warned us that the commodity has a mysterious character bearing "metaphysical subtleties and theological insights." This article attempts to decipher a little of this mystery by decoding it into what we call the strange objectivity of value. For this, we analyze the relation between ideology and value from the Marxian critique of the commodity, consigned to the Hegelian logic. We see that value is constituted as the ontological reason of the commodity as the product of the labor process that carries an immanent rationality, that is, a socially produced spirit that is objectified as it is experienced by the individuals as a social logic that governs the relations in this society. This is done through "metaphysical subtleties" in the formation of social reality marked by contradictions established between, on the one hand, the objective content of social relations, and on the other, the way in which these relations are experienced by consciousness in capitalist society. In this relationship between content and form, we find determinations of ontological depth between value and ideology, as a social form that operates by harmonizing the constituent contradictions of social reality, as in wage labor. Ideological mediation is seen as an immanent progression to the materialization of the concrete experience of the relation between capital and labor in wage, in order to naturalize the exploitation that is hidden in the strange objectivity of the value that is realized in the exchange of commodities. We conclude that the ontological connection between the social being and the commodity is socially ubiquitous precisely because of its ideological character in the formation of sociability from the labor process subjugated to capital.  Keywords: Value. Resumo: O presente texto objetiva uma abordagem, no interior do pensamento de Ernst Bloch (1885/1977), acerca da relação entre marxismo e utopia: um vínculo incomum no interior do marxismo, comumente tido numa oposição inconciliável. Daí a apropriação do termo “herético” em referência ao marxismo do autor alemão: a expressão é usada não em sentido pejorativo, mas apenas para situar seu distanciamento do marxismo vulgar, bem como sua intenção de crítica radical dessa tradição. Aqui entendemos que é, em particular, por meio da relação entre marxismo e utopia que o pensamento de Ernst Bloch aparece como um projeto inelutavelmente político com vistas a uma filosofia da práxis concreta na principal obra do autor: O Princípio esperança (Das Prinzip Hoffnung) [1954/1959]. Neste livro encontramos, com efeito, a tentativa de pensar a atualidade do marxismo para o contexto do século XX, a era das catástrofes, conforme definição do historiador Eric Hobsbawm. Palavras-chave: Marxismo. Cultura.  Abstract: This paper presents an approach within the thinking of Ernst Bloch (1885/1977) about the relation between Marxism and Utopia: an unusual link within Marxism, commonly held in an irreconcilable opposition. Hence the appropriation of the term "heretical" in reference to the German author's Marxism: the expression is used not in a pejorative sense, but only to situate its distancing from vulgar Marxism, as well as its intention of a radical critique of this tradition. Here we understand that it is particularly through the relationship between Marxism and Utopia that Ernst Bloch's thought appears as an ineluctably political project with a view to a philosophy of concrete praxis in the principal work of the author: The Principle Hope (Das Prinzip Hoffnung) [1954/1959]. In this book we find, in effect, the attempt to think the actuality of Marxism in the context of the age of catastrophe - as defined by Eric Hobsbawm - that is, the long twentieth century that experienced the extreme barbarism of the concentration camp, of which the thinker in question, Jewish and Communist, managed to escape.  Keywords: Marxism. Through our ethnographic study of urban activism collectives in São Paulo, we propose another approach for exploring the process of collective formations and their longevity. Rather than seeking out the representational meanings of individualized communities, we approach collectivity from the perspective of crowds. Crowds are affective. Crowds are contagious. By adopting affect-based theorizing, we discuss affective intensities that bring about collectivity before the individuals awaken to narrate their meaning-makings. In our ethnographic context, collectives resist manifestations of gentrification (i.e., consumer culture in itself) and offer us a multifaceted site of being and becoming with the crowds. We explore how connections and disconnections affectively rekindle the social expression of collective bodies in consumer culture. This way, we add new dimensions to extant theorizing of consumer collectivity that tends to focus on individualized meaning, stability, and harmony.

ABSTRACTBackground: Anemia and dementia are common diseases among the elderly, but conflicting data are available regarding an association between these two conditions. We analyzed data from the São Paulo Ageing & Health Study to address the relationship between anemia and dementia.Methods: This cross-sectional observational study included participants aged 65 years and older from a deprived area of the borough of Butantan, São Paulo, Brazil. Data about demographics, education, income, and cognitive and daily life function were collected, as well as blood samples. Anemia and dementia were defined according to WHO and DSM-IV criteria, respectively.Results: Of the 2267 subjects meeting the inclusion criteria, 2072 agreed to participate in the study; of whom 1948 had a valid total blood count and were included in the analysis. Anemia was diagnosed in 203 (10.2%) participants and dementia in 99 (5.1%). The frequency of anemia was higher in patients with dementia according to univariate analysis (odds ratio (OR) = 2.00, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.17–3.41, p = 0.01), but this association was not present after adjusting for age (OR = 1.33, 95% CI = 0.76–2.33, p = 0.32). Further multivariate adjustment did not change the results.Conclusion: Although anemia and dementia are frequent disorders in older people, we found their relationship to be mediated exclusively by aging in this low-income population from São Paulo.
