Research about students’ understanding of depression and nursing care to depressed patients. Method: sample consisted of 14 students in 3rd year of undergraduate studies in nursing (six from the Bachelor’s Program and eight from the Teaching Diploma Program), six of whom with symptoms suggesting depression. Delbecq’s nominal group technique was used as qualitative and quantitative methodological framework. The basic question researched was “How do undergraduate nursing students can help in delivering care to someone with depression?”. The project was approved by the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing Ethics Committee. Descriptive data analysis was carried out. Results: among students with symptoms suggesting depression, higher concern regarding the insertion of family in care and education of family members was observed. Among students without symptoms of depression, a more theoretical view of nursing care planning was observed, focusing competences of individual and collective protection. It was concluded that students perceive and understand the essential characteristics of this care.

Abstract Objective: To understand the connections established between the teaching of research in undergraduate school and reflections on the context of nursing care based on the meanings assigned by nurses and undergraduate nursing students. Method: Qualitative research, the theoretical and methodological frameworks of which were Complexity Theory and Grounded Theory. Sixteen nurses and nine undergraduate nursing students participated. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Results: The study revealed that aspects that structure and maintain the scientific practice of nurses are connected with the teaching of nursing in undergraduate school. The transversality of teaching of research and strategies adopted by professors influence this process. Conclusion: In the nursing field, learning through research requires strategies that contextualize research within the context of care delivery, so that students perceive science as an element that structures their profession. For that, research should be a non-linear, transversal procedure that takes place over the course of the undergraduate program.

IntroductionThe formation of nursing professionals requires a dynamic teaching that provides the acquisition of skills and abilities to execute care, management, teaching and research activities. In this perspective, the operative groups are a teaching and nursing care strategy, performed by a knowledge exchange and collective interventions.AimsDiscuss the experience in nursing care to the person with mental disorder.MethodsIt is about a fourth year undergraduate nursing students’ experience report. The activities were developed at a center of psychosocial attention in João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. Once a week, four operative group sessions were held under the theme “men's health”. In the first session were agreed norms of behavior and activities plans on which the participants chose the subjects.ResultsThe operative group provided a friendly environment to exchange knowledge, in which the contents where addressed from the participant's acquirements and experiences. There was a good group interaction. The students conducted the activities under the teacher and monitor's supervision.ConclusionThis report provided experiences that contributed to the students’ teaching-learning process as well as for understanding the nurse's insertion in the care scenario and the use of soft technologies to an efficient care to the person with mental disorder. The students also noticed the operative group's impact in the user's lives though sentences such as “It was fun”, “I won gifts”, “liked it”, “I learned”.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

BACKGROUND Worldwide, patient safety has been a widely discussed topic and has currently become one of the greatest challenges for health institutions. This concern is heightened when referring to children. OBJECTIVE The goal of this study was to develop a virtual learning environment for medication administration, as a tool to facilitate the training process of undergraduate nursing students. METHODS Descriptive research and methodological development with a quantitative and qualitative approach were used with stages of design-based research as methodological strategies. For the development of the virtual environment, 5 themes were selected: rights of medication administration, medication administration steps, medication administration routes, medication calculation, and nonpharmacological actions for pain relief. After development, 2 groups—expert judges in the field of pediatrics and neonatology for environment validation and undergraduate nursing students for the assessment—were used to assess the virtual learning environment. For the validation of the virtual learning environment by expert judges, the content validity index was used, and for the evaluation of the students, the percentage of agreement was calculated. RESULTS The study included 13 experts who positively validated the virtual environment with a content validity index of 0.97, and 26 students who considered the content suitable for nursing students, although some adjustments are necessary. CONCLUSIONS The results show the benefit of the virtual learning environment to the training of nursing students and professional nurses who work in health care. It is an effective educational tool for teaching medication administration in pediatrics and neonatology and converges with the conjectures of active methodologies.

Background Irish Assertiveness Scale is commonly used to examine the individual’ level of assertiveness. There is no adequately validated Arabic instrument that examines the level of assertiveness among Arabic-speaking undergraduate nursing students. Objectives The purpose of this study was to translate, then evaluate the psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the Irish Assertiveness Scale among Saudi undergraduate nursing students and interns. Design Cross-sectional survey. Settings Three nursing colleges from three provinces in Saudi Arabia: Riyadh, Eastern and Makkah provinces. Participants 283 questionnaires were completed by 3rd and 4th year undergraduate nursing students, and nursing interns. Methods A standard procedure including forward-backward translation, cultural adaptation and pilot testing was adopted to translate the Irish Assertiveness Scale into Arabic language. Content validity was measured using content validity index. Scale reliability was measured using cronbach’s alpha coefficient and mean inter-item correlation. The sample was randomly split, and exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis was then conducted on each sample to examine the construct validity of the proposed scale. A subsequent convergent validity and discriminant validity were also tested. Results The item-level content validity index ranged from 0.9 to 1.0, and the overall content validity index was 0.93. The exploratory factor analysis resulted in 23-items, four-factor solution explaining 49.4% of the total variance. The mean inter-item correlation for each factor ranged between 0.22 and 0.4. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients for the overall scale was 0.80. The confirmatory factor analysis showed that the proposed four-factor solution had the best model fit. Whilst discriminant validity was supported in the new model, convergent validity was partially met. Conclusions This study contributed toward establishing the Arabic version of the Irish Assertiveness Scale. Considering the limitations of the convergent validity demonstrated in the new instrument, a modified version of the Irish Assertiveness Scale might be needed to ascertain the most feasible model which best captures the level of assertiveness in Arabic cultural context.

This cross-sectional, comparative descriptive design study aimed to compare self-reports of perceived caring, measured by the Caring Behaviors Inventory-16 Student Version, in a convenience sample of undergraduate nursing students across three levels of the curriculum, second, third, and fourth years. The study evaluated their confidence in providing nursing care with a professional confidence Visual Analog Scale. Combined perceived caring and confidence scores increased on posttest and differed at a statistically significant level between pretest and posttest. Pretest and posttest perceived caring scores differed significantly among the three curriculum levels, for pretest confidence, but not for posttest senior level confidence. Convergent validity testing revealed a weak association between perceived caring and confidence in providing nursing care for patients. Cronbach’s alpha for the CBI-16 Student Version established beginning reliability. Perceived caring may be unintentionally part of a hidden curriculum through student experiences with patients, registered nurses, and faculty who model caring behaviors.
