Background Irish Assertiveness Scale is commonly used to examine the individual’ level of assertiveness. There is no adequately validated Arabic instrument that examines the level of assertiveness among Arabic-speaking undergraduate nursing students. Objectives The purpose of this study was to translate, then evaluate the psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the Irish Assertiveness Scale among Saudi undergraduate nursing students and interns. Design Cross-sectional survey. Settings Three nursing colleges from three provinces in Saudi Arabia: Riyadh, Eastern and Makkah provinces. Participants 283 questionnaires were completed by 3rd and 4th year undergraduate nursing students, and nursing interns. Methods A standard procedure including forward-backward translation, cultural adaptation and pilot testing was adopted to translate the Irish Assertiveness Scale into Arabic language. Content validity was measured using content validity index. Scale reliability was measured using cronbach’s alpha coefficient and mean inter-item correlation. The sample was randomly split, and exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis was then conducted on each sample to examine the construct validity of the proposed scale. A subsequent convergent validity and discriminant validity were also tested. Results The item-level content validity index ranged from 0.9 to 1.0, and the overall content validity index was 0.93. The exploratory factor analysis resulted in 23-items, four-factor solution explaining 49.4% of the total variance. The mean inter-item correlation for each factor ranged between 0.22 and 0.4. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients for the overall scale was 0.80. The confirmatory factor analysis showed that the proposed four-factor solution had the best model fit. Whilst discriminant validity was supported in the new model, convergent validity was partially met. Conclusions This study contributed toward establishing the Arabic version of the Irish Assertiveness Scale. Considering the limitations of the convergent validity demonstrated in the new instrument, a modified version of the Irish Assertiveness Scale might be needed to ascertain the most feasible model which best captures the level of assertiveness in Arabic cultural context.

Aim: To evaluate the psychometric properties of an Arabic version of the Spiritual Care-Giving Scale (SCGS) in a sample of Saudi nursing students. Method: A convenience sample of 202 Saudi nursing students was included in this descriptive cross-sectional study. The 35-item Arabic version of the SCGS (SCGS-A) was tested for internal consistency, stability reliability, content validity, and construct validity. Findings: The SCGS-A manifested acceptable internal consistency and stability reliability with computed Cronbach’s alpha ranges from .84 to .94, and an intraclass correlation coefficient of .97. The item-level content validity index ranged from .83 to 1, and the scale-level content validity index (average) was .98. The principal component analysis revealed five dominant components with eigenvalues greater than 1, and a cumulative contribution rate of 62.0%. The five factors were moderately to strongly correlated ( r = .29-.56; p < .001) with each other and with the overall SCGS-A score ( r = .57-.77; p < .001). Conclusion: The SCGS-A manifested an acceptable reliability and validity in Saudi nursing students, which supports its sound psychometric properties. With the establishment of this valid and reliable tool, timely and accurate assessment of student nurses’ perceptions about spirituality and spiritual care can be facilitated.

BACKGROUND Worldwide, patient safety has been a widely discussed topic and has currently become one of the greatest challenges for health institutions. This concern is heightened when referring to children. OBJECTIVE The goal of this study was to develop a virtual learning environment for medication administration, as a tool to facilitate the training process of undergraduate nursing students. METHODS Descriptive research and methodological development with a quantitative and qualitative approach were used with stages of design-based research as methodological strategies. For the development of the virtual environment, 5 themes were selected: rights of medication administration, medication administration steps, medication administration routes, medication calculation, and nonpharmacological actions for pain relief. After development, 2 groups—expert judges in the field of pediatrics and neonatology for environment validation and undergraduate nursing students for the assessment—were used to assess the virtual learning environment. For the validation of the virtual learning environment by expert judges, the content validity index was used, and for the evaluation of the students, the percentage of agreement was calculated. RESULTS The study included 13 experts who positively validated the virtual environment with a content validity index of 0.97, and 26 students who considered the content suitable for nursing students, although some adjustments are necessary. CONCLUSIONS The results show the benefit of the virtual learning environment to the training of nursing students and professional nurses who work in health care. It is an effective educational tool for teaching medication administration in pediatrics and neonatology and converges with the conjectures of active methodologies.

Abstract Background: Up to our knowledge, there is currently no psychometrically validated Hungarian scale to evaluate nurses’ knowledge about infection prevention and control (IPC) practices. Thus, we aim in this study to assess the validity and reliability of the infection control standardized questionnaire Hungarian version (ICSQ-H).Methods: A cross-sectional, multisite study was conducted among 591 nurses in Hungary. The original ICSQ including 25 items was translated into Hungarian. A panel of four experts assessed the content validity of the questionnaire by calculating the item content validity index and scale content validity index. Then, construct validity was evaluated using principal component analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. The goodness of fit for the model was measured through fit indices. Convergent validity was assessed by calculating the average variance extracted. Additionally, discriminant validity was evaluated by computing the spearman correlation coefficient between the constructs. Finally, the interitem correlations, the corrected item-total correlations, and the internal consistency were calculated.Results: Content validity of the questionnaire was established with 23 items. The final four-construct ICSQ-H including 10 items showed a good fit model. Convergent validity was met except for the alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) construct, while discriminant validity was met for all constructs. The interitem correlations and the corrected item-total correlations were met for all constructs but, the internal consistency of ABHR was unsatisfactory due to the low number of items.Conclusions: The results did not support the original three-factor structure of the ICSQ. However, the four-factor ICSQ-H demonstrated an adequate degree of good fit and was found to be reliable. Based on our findings, we believe that the ICSQ-H could pave the way for more research regarding nurses’ IPC knowledge to be conducted in Hungary. Nevertheless, its validation among other healthcare workers is important to tailor effective interventions to enhance knowledge and awareness.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to develop and validate a new Learning Behaviour Questionnaire (LBQ) for the undergraduate nursing students.Study designThis study was performed in two phases. Phase 1 of the study focused on questionnaire development to create a pool of items, while phase 2 focused on validity and reliability testing.MethodsSemistructured interviews were used to explore nursing undergraduates’ perception of learning behaviour. A two-round modified Delphi method was used to test content validity and quantify the degree of consistency in questionnaire items. An item analysis, an exploratory factor analysis (EFA), a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and an internal consistency reliability check were conducted. Criterion-related validity was demonstrated through correlations with Self-Regulated Learning Scale for Undergraduates (SRLS-U). A sample of 114 nursing students was evaluated in test–retest reliability to confirm stability.ResultsThe final LBQ consisted of four factors for the 19-item questionnaire with a 5-point rating from ‘1’ (Fully disagree) to ‘5’ (fully agree). The content validity was 0.890. EFA revealed the presence of four factors, including ‘strategy’, ‘attitude’, ‘motivation’ and ‘degree of satisfaction’. The CFA indicated good fit indexes for the proposed model (χ2/df=1.866, root mean square residual=0.037, comparative fit index =0.950, goodness-of-fit index =0.929, Tucker-Lewis index=0.941, adjusted goodness-of-fit index=0.907 and root mean square error of approximation=0.049). The LBQ correlated significantly with SRLS-U subscales (r=0.742–0.837, p<0.01). The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the whole questionnaire was 0.936, while the Cronbach’s alphas of the four factors were 0.828, 0.826, 0.804 and 0.805, respectively. The test–retest reliabilities of the four factors were 0.886, 0.904, 0.852 and 0.875, respectively.ConclusionThe validity and reliability of the LBQ were satisfying. The LBQ is a short, well-developed questionnaire that can serve as a generic assessment tool for measuring learning behaviour for Chinese undergraduate nursing students.Cite Now

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Diabetic Foot Scale–Short Form (DFS-SF). The study was cross-sectional and conducted between January and October 2019 in a diabetic foot council of a university hospital. A total of 194 diabetic foot patients participated in the study. A Patient Identification Form and DFS-SF were used for data collection. Forward and backward translations were used in language validity. Expert opinions were obtained to determine the Content Validity Index. To determine construct validity, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used. Cronbach’s α internal consistency coefficient, item-scale correlation, and test-retest reliability were used to evaluate reliability. It was found that Content Validity Index was 0.97 (0.86-1.00), the factor loading of scale varied from 0.378 to 0.982, Cronbach’s α value varied from 0.81 to 0.94, and item-total correlations were between 0.30 and 0.75. The Turkish version of the DFS-SF was found valid and reliable to measure the quality of life of diabetic foot patients.

AbstractObjectiveTo translate, culturally adapt, and psychometrically evaluate the Spanish version of the “Scale for End-of Life Caregiving Appraisal” (SEOLCAS).MethodObservational cross-sectional study. Convenience sample of 201 informal end-of-life caregivers recruited in a southern Spanish hospital. The reliability of the questionnaire was assessed through its internal consistency (Cronbach's α) and temporal stability (Pearson's correlation coefficient [r] between test-retest). The content validity index of the items and the scale was calculated. Criterion validity was explored through performing a linear regression analysis to evaluate the SEOLCAS’ predictive validity. Exploratory factor analysis was used to examine its construct validity.ResultsThe SEOLCAS’ reliability was very high (Cronbach's α = 0.92). Its content validity was excellent (all items’ content validity index = 0.8–1; scale's validity index = 0.88). Evidence of the SEOLCAS’ criterion validity showed that the participants’ scores on the SEOLCAS explained approximately 79.3% of the between-subject variation of their results on the Zarit Burden Interview. Exploratory factor analysis provided evidence of the SEOLCAS’ construct validity. This analysis revealed that two factors (“internal contingencies” and “external contingencies”) explained 53.77% of the total variance found and reflected the stoic Hispanic attitude toward adversity.Significance of resultsThe Spanish version of the SEOLCAS has shown to be an easily applicable, valid, reliable, and culturally appropriate tool to measure the impact of end-of-life care provision on Hispanic informal caregivers. This tool offers healthcare professionals the opportunity to easily explore Hispanic informal end-of-life caregivers’ experiences and discover the type of support they may need (instrumental or emotional) even when there are communicational and organizational constraints.

Background and PurposeThis study was aimed to develop and validate a scale to measure the frequency and the intensity of the moral distress experienced by nursing students.MethodMethodological study in which a guideline with eight steps: (a) to determine what to measure, (b) to produce items, (c) format to measure, (d) review by experts, (e) validation of items, (f) sample, (g) assessment (h) scale length was used to develop and validate a scale. The sample was composed of 499 undergraduate nursing students from three Brazilian universities.ResultsSix constructs were identified in the factor analysis. The instrument and dimensions presented satisfactory internal consistency, with Cronbach’s alpha coefficients equal to .97 and between .60 and .97, respectively.ConclusionThe developed scale is able to analyze the intensity and the frequency of Moral Distress in nursing students, in a valid and reliable way.

Objetivo: descrever a construção e validação de instrumento para avaliação do conhecimento de alunos de Graduação em Enfermagem e enfermeiros sobre o cuidado de Enfermagem no perioperatório de cirurgias geradoras de estomias intestinais de eliminação. Método: pesquisa metodológica realizada após aprovação do Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa para construção dos itens a partir da literatura e diretrizes internacionais e validação de conteúdo e aparência por oito especialistas/juízes em Estomaterapia. Para as análises, consideraram-se Índice de Validade de Conteúdo ?a 80,0% e Coeficiente Kappade Fleis s?a 70%.  Resultado: o Índice de Validade de Conteúdo global foi de 94,0% e o Coeficiente Kappa de Fleiss ficou abaixo de 0,43 para a maioria dos itens, sendo necessária segunda etapa, na qual o Coeficiente Kappa de Fleiss obteve resultado perfeito 1,00. Conclusão: Foi possível construir e validar o instrumento, entretanto, necessita de outros tipos de validação para que seja utilizado.Descritores: Estomia; Estudos de Validação; Enfermagem. CONSTRUCTION AND VALIDATION OF AN INSTRUMENT FOR EVALUATION OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT INTESTINAL ELIMINATIONObjective: To describe the construction and validation of an instrument for assessing the knowledge of undergraduate nursing students and nurses about nursing care in the perioperative period of surgery to generate intestinal elimination ostomy. Methodology: Methodological research conducted after approval by the Research Ethics Committee for construction of items from the literature and international guidelines and validation of content and appearance by eight stomatherapy experts / judges. For the analyzes, we considered Content Validity Index ≥ 80.0% and Kappade Fleis Coefficient ≥ 70%. Results: The final version of the instrument consisted of 39 items, divided into 7 domains, with overall CVI of 94% and Perfect Fleiss Kappa Coefficient 1.00, after the second round. Resultado: La versión final del instrumento consistió en 39 ítems, divididos en 7 dominios, con un IVC general del 94% y el coeficiente Perfect Fleiss Kappa 1.00, después de la segunda ronda. Conclusión: fue posible construir y validar el instrumento que puede resaltar lagunas en el conocimiento sobre el cuidado de enfermería en el período perioperatorio de la cirugía que genera la eliminación de la ostomía intestinal.Descriptores: Estomía; Estudios de Validación; Enfermería.

Abstract Background The Partners at Care Transitions Measure (PACT-M) is a measure that assesses the quality and safety of care during the transition from hospital to home from the patient’s perspective. The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the PACT-M in Mainland China. Methods This was a cross-sectional study. A convenience sample of patients was recruited from three tertiary hospitals affiliated with Zhengzhou University, China. A total of 402 participants were interviewed before discharge, and 306 participants were interviewed one month after discharge from hospital to home using the Chinese version of the PACT-M. The statistical methods used in this study include the critical ratio value, item total correlation, test-retest, Cronbach’s alpha, confirmatory factor analysis and exploratory factor analysis. Results The Chinese version of the PACT-M consists of PACT-M1 and PACT-M2, both of which have two dimensions, the number of items in both parts are consistent with the original English language version. The Cronbach’s alpha values of the PACT-M1 and PACT-M2 were 0.802 and 0.741, and the test-retest reliability values were 0.885 and 0.837. The item content validity index and scale content validity index values of the PACT-M1 and PACT-M2 were all 1.0. Conclusion The Chinese version of the PACT-M shows acceptable validity and reliability and can be used to assess the quality and safety of transitional care from hospital to home from the patient’s perspective in mainland China.
