Background: Bullying and peer victimization are important, yet underestimated public health issues. Methods: Data were obtained in a sample of N=3454 children at the age of 12.6 (+/- 1.3) in Austria. 75% of the participants were not involved in bullying (uninvolved), 16% were victims, 4% bully/victims and 5% bullies. We applied a multivariate regression model relating to gender, established a classification into bullying and victimization, and investigated parental behavior, family characteristics, physical or mental illness of a parent, as well as internalizing symptoms of pupils. Results: Our data analysis demonstrated gender-related effects and the development of internalizing symptoms: Boys showed fewer internalizing symptoms than girls. Pupils with low perceived parental support displayed higher symptomatic scores. The variables of family break-up and parental health led to similar observations. Victims have an approximately 30% higher score on the internalizing scale than bullies and 60% higher scores than uninvolved. The results of the regression model indicated that these predictors explained 25% of the variance. Conclusion: School policies, teachers, parents, the media, school physicians, as well as GPs must recognize early warning signs of bullying and diligently assess risk behaviors. Early social support (by parents and teachers) is discussed as an important protective factor.

Children obesity is a serious public health issue. This study aimed to investigate physical/sedentary activities of first-year primary schools children in Modena, and their association with overweight/obesity and dietary habits of children and family characteristics to identify the risk factors for unhealthy lifestyles. Child physical/sedentary activities were gathered through an anonymous questionnaire administered to parents, as well as family characteristics and weight/height of child and parents. Logistic regression models, eventually adjusted for parents’ sociodemographic characteristics, were used to analyze data. Questionnaires were delivered by 660 families (74.2%), of which 72 without anthropometric data were excluded. Three out of four children spent in physical activities less than 7 h/week, while 63.9% dedicated to sedentary activities two or more hours/day. From multivariate analysis, the habit significantly affecting children’s overweight/obesity was spending time on tablets/Personal Computers/mobile phones/videogames. Higher parental education level resulted in a protective factor for implementing unhealthy lifestyles in terms of time dedicated to physical/sedentary activities. Our results suggest the need of interventions to increase time for physical activity and to promote a responsible use of digital media involving the entire families to reach all parents regardless of their education and nationality with a possible relapse on other family members.

This present study aimed to search for parental and friend support roles to prevent suicide attempts among adolescents who identify as lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) in France. Data were drawn from a French cross-sectional study entitled “Portrait d’Adolescents”. An anonymous self-questionnaire was fulfilled by 14,265 French adolescents (ages from 13 to 20) in 2013, and 637 (4.47%) were identified as LGB. Chi-square analysis was used to estimate statistical differences between self-reported suicide and non-suicide attempters in the whole sample and then in LGB and heterosexual subgroups separately. Multiple logistic regression analyses were then performed to examine the associations of self-reported suicide attempts (dependent variable) with the effects of parental and friend support and other factors based on the whole data and further on the data subsets among the LGB and the heterosexual subjects. Suicide attempt was independently associated with sexual orientation (30.7% vs 10.6%; OR=2.04 [1.62-2.56]; p<0.0001). Both parental and friend support appeared protective factors in the heterosexuals (OR=0.52 [0.45-0.60] and OR=0.75 [0.61-0.93]), whereas only parental support was significant in the LGB group (OR=0.51 [0.31-0.82]), independently of other variables. French adolescents who identify as LGB have a higher risk for suicidality than their heterosexual peers. Special attention needs to be given to this vulnerable population when developing suicide prevention programs. Parental support identified as an effective protective factor should be systematically searched to prevent suicidality among LGB.

Drawing from dispositional mindfulness research and stress and coping theories, we tested whether adolescents’ dispositional mindfulness was associated with perceptions of peer victimization and exclusion and internalizing symptoms. We further explored the role of dispositional mindfulness as a protective factor buffering the impact of peer victimization and exclusion (PVE) on internalizing symptoms. Participants were 361 (40% boys) adolescents aged between 11 and 18 years ( M = 14.9, SD = 1.4) who completed a questionnaire to assess dispositional mindfulness, perceptions of PVE, social anxiety and depressive symptoms, and loneliness. As expected, more frequent experience of PVE was associated with reporting more symptoms of social anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Further, adolescents who reported higher dispositional mindfulness also reported fewer symptoms of social anxiety, depression, and loneliness, even after controlling for gender and experiences of PVE. Dispositional mindfulness was not protective against (i.e., did not buffer) the effects of PVE on internalizing symptoms. Instead, we found that PVE had a stronger association with symptoms of social anxiety, depression, and loneliness when mindfulness was high relative to when it was medium or low. Yet, victimization was associated with greater social anxiety, depressive symptoms, and loneliness at all levels of mindfulness.

This investigation focuses on the question whether assessments of the development of internalizing behavior from childhood to adolescence are affected by the kind of research design (longitudinal versus cross-sectional). Two longitudinal samples of 432 second-graders and 366 fourth graders participated in a longitudinal study with subsequent measurements taken 1, 2, and 3 years later. A third sample consisting of 849 children covering the same range of grades participated in a cross-sectional study. The results show that the development of internalizing symptoms in girls – but not in boys – varies systematically with the research design. In girls, there is a decrease of internalizing symptoms (especially between the first two timepoints) in the longitudinal assessment, which may reflect, for example, the influence of strain during the first testing situation. Both longitudinal trajectories converge to a common trajectory from grade 2 to grade 7 when controlling for this “novelty-distress effect.” Moreover, when we control this effect, the slight but significant decrease characterizing the common trajectory becomes similar to the one obtained in the cross-sectional study. Therefore, trajectories based on longitudinal assessments may suggest more changes with regard to internalizing symptoms over time than actually take place, while trajectories based on cross-sectional data may be characterized by an increased level of internalizing symptoms. Theoretical and practical implications of these results are discussed.

Infeksi HPV dan pre kanker serviks (sel-sel abnormal pada leher rahim yang dapat menyebabkan kanker) telah menurun secara signifikan sejak vaksin HPV digunakan.Cakupan vaksinasi HPV masih rendah di Indonesia.Orang tua adalah pemegang tanggung jawab dan kewajiban utama di dalam penjaminan pemenuhan hak dasar anak untuk mendapatkan vaksinasi. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mengetahui faktor yang berhubungan (sikap, kepercayaan, dukungan orang tua) dengan kesediaan vaksinasi pada remaja putri. Jenis penelitian adalah survey analitik dengan pendekatan cross sectional. Penelitian dilaksanakan di SD Muhammadiyah Macanan, Ngemplak dan SMPN 1 Berbah, Sleman pada Mei-Juli 2019. Jumlah sampel 127 remaja putri beserta orang tuanya dipilih dengan accidental sampling. Instrumen kuesioner dan telah dilakukan uji validitas. Analisis bivariat dengan uji chi square (dukungan instrumen, emosional, kepercayaan orang tua) dan uji fisher exact (dukungan informasi dan sikap). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan 92,9% orang tua tidak memberikan dukungan informasi, 85% tidak memberikan dukungan instrumen, 75,6% memberikan dukungan emosional kepada putrinya terkait vaksinasi. Faktor yang berhubungan dengan kesediaan vaksinasi adalah dukungan instrumen (p-value = 0,048). Faktor yang menjadi pertimbangan terbanyak orang tua untuk mengijinkan anaknya di vaksinasi adalah keamanan vaksin (81,1%). Kesimpulan: Ada hubungan dukungan instrumen orang tua dengan kesediaan vaksinasi HPV pada remaja putri. HPV infections and cervical precancers (abnormal cells on the cervix that can lead to cancer) have dropped significantly since HPV vaccine has been in use. HPV vaccination coverage is still low in Indonesia. Parents are the main responsibility and obligation in guaranteeing the fulfillment of the child's basic rights to get a vaccination. The purpose of this study was to determine the related factors (attitudes, beliefs, parental support) with the willingness to participate in HPV vaccination among adolescent girls. This type of the study was analytic survey with cross sectional approach. The study was conducted at SD Muhammadiyah Macanan, Ngemplak and SMPN 1 Berbah, Sleman in May-July 2019. The sample was 127 adolescent girl and their parents selected by accidental sampling. The instrument used questionnaire and already undergone validity test. The bivariate analysis used chi square test (instrument and emotional support, parental trust) and fisher exact test (information support and attitude). The results showed 92.9% of parents did not provide information support, 85% did not provide instrument support, 75.6% provided emotional support to their daughters related to vaccination. Factors related to the willingness of vaccinations were instrument support (p-value = 0.048). The factor that was considered by most parents to allow their children to be vaccinated was vaccine safety (81.1%). Conclusion: There was a correlation between parental instrument support and HPV vaccination willingness of adolescent girls.

Abstract Background Due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, social distancing practices were introduced to curb infection rates in many countries. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of these restrictions on behaviours and well-being and whether individual differences predict changes in well-being. Methods Australian adults participated in a cross-sectional, online survey during May 2020. The survey captured demographic information; health behaviours; personality traits; life satisfaction and COVID-19-related attitudes, financial concerns, perceived risks and impacts. Results In total, 3745 (86.8% of 4313) participants completed all items. Participants were mostly female (85.7%) and 56.4 years (standard deviation [SD] = 12.6) on average. Over 95.0% of the sample indicated they had been social distancing or isolating. Health behaviours and well-being had generally worsened, with social connections being the most negatively affected. Life satisfaction was significantly lower since restrictions. For changes in life satisfaction, extroversion was a risk factor and openness to experience was a protective factor. Conclusions Overall, well-being was negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and associated social distancing particularly in this sample containing mainly older women. In future, it will be crucial to understand why and who may be differentially affected, to encourage behaviours that are protective of well-being.
