The wood and bamboo waste from the exploitation and industry are still not fully utilized where they are now being used as raw material for particleboard. The purpose of this narrative review is to find out the concept of particleboard, the mechanism of particleboard, and the potential for wood and bamboo powder in particleboard applications. The method of creating particleboard was using dehydrated sawdust and bamboo then pouring the powder with adhesive. In this narrative review, there are several types of adhesives which are Polyurethane Resin, Phenol-Formaldehyde (PF), Epoxy, Polystyrene Based Resin (PBR), and Unsaturated Polyester (UP). After molding powder and adhesive mixture, it was hot-pressed to make a particleboard product. Finally, the mixture was tested for the physical and mechanical properties of particleboard products based on Indonesian National Standard. The physical and mechanical properties are increases by particleboard with a proportion of 75%-100% teak wood (T. Grandis) and 25%-50% bamboo. It's known that ironwood has characteristics close to that of the teak species. Therefore, the ironwood and bamboo sawdust has the potential to be used as raw material for particleboard. And the recommended method based on the type of adhesive used is UP.

ABSTRACT Effects of nanowollastonite (NW) adsorption on cellulose surface were studied on physical and mechanical properties of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) panels; properties were then compared with those of MDF panels without NW-content. The size range of NW was 30-110 nm. The interaction between NW and cellulose was investigated using density functional theory (DFT). Physical and mechanical tests were carried out in accordance with the Iranian National Standard ISIRI 9044 PB Type P2 (compatible with ASTM D1037-99) specifications. Results of DFT simulations showed strong adsorption of NW on cellulose surface. Moreover, mechanical properties demonstrated significant improvement. The improvement was attributed to the strong adsorption of NW on cellulose surface predicted by DFT, adding to the strength and integrity between wood fibers in NW-MDF panels. It was concluded that NW would improve mechanical properties in MDF panels as a wood-composite material, as well as being effective in improving its biological and thermal conductivity.

Background: High-density fiberboards (HDF) are widely used as a substitute for solid wood in furniture, cabinet, construction materials, etc. Wood fibers are often used in the production of HDF but the use of renewable materials has gained worldwide interest brought about by global pressure to pursue sustainable development. An abundant source of renewable fibers that can be used to produce HDF is keratin from waste chicken feathers. The goal of the study is to investigate the use of keratin fibers in combination with wood fibers to produce HDF. No or limited studies have been conducted in this area and if successful, it could offer an alternative utilization for the billions of kilograms of waste feather produced by the poultry industry. HDF is a high volume feather utilization that can reduce pollution and help solve solid waste disposal problems in many countries. Methods: A series of dry-formed HDFs containing varying ratios of wood and keratin fibers bonded by polyurethane resin were produced. The physical and mechanical properties of the HDFs were determined. Results : The properties of the HDFs were affected by varying ratios of wood particles and keratin fibers. Dimensional stability as indicated by low levels of thickness swelling (<4.6%) and water absorption (<10%) was observed. Internal bond (2.47 MPa), MOE (5.8 GPa) and MOR (45 MPa) values were higher or comparable to those reported in the literature. Conclusion: HDF formed using a combination of wood and keratin fibers bonded together by polyurethane resin to as much as 50% keratin fibers were dimensionally stable with stiffness and strength above the minimum requirements for general use HDF as prescribed by EN 622-5.

Phenol novolac epoxy resin is a polymer matter which its properties can be modified for industrial needs. In this research, nanocomposites of phenol novolac epoxy resin and unsaturated polyester are made nano Bentonite and silica nanoparticles as filler. For this purpose, effect of nanoparticles percent on nanocomposite formation is studied and their physical, mechanical and thermal properties are obtained. The presence of unsaturated polyester in this process forms a cross-link capable of improving the physical and mechanical properties of epoxy resin. Fracture behavior was determined by a SEM device. Moreover, TGA, DSC, impact tests and bending test were applied for data analysis. When process ability is growing, moisture absorption decreases. Fracture toughness was also evaluated in a stoichiometric network. Physical and mechanical properties improve significantly with increasing nanoparticles. The most important reason for using this nanocomposite is its high resistance to corrosion.

Thermoplastic films exhibit good potential to be used as adhesives for the production of veneer-based composites. This work presents the first effort to develop and evaluate composites based on alder veneers and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) film. The effects of hot-pressing temperature (140, 160, and 180 °C), hot-pressing pressure (0.8, 1.2, and 1.6 MPa), hot-pressing time (1, 2, 3, and 5 min), and type of adhesives on the physical and mechanical properties of alder plywood panels were investigated. The effects of these variables on the core-layer temperature during the hot pressing of multiplywood panels using various adhesives were also studied. Three types of adhesives were used: urea–formaldehyde (UF), phenol–formaldehyde (PF), and HDPE film. UF and PF adhesives were used for the comparison. The findings of this work indicate that formaldehyde-free HDPE film adhesive gave values of mechanical properties of alder plywood panels that are comparable to those obtained with traditional UF and PF adhesives, even though the adhesive dosage and pressing pressure were lower than when UF and PF adhesives were used. The obtained bonding strength values of HDPE-bonded alder plywood panels ranged from 0.74 to 2.38 MPa and met the European Standard EN 314-2 for Class 1 plywood. The optimum conditions for the bonding of HDPE plywood were 160 °C, 0.8 MPa, and 3 min.

Spodumene, which is a lithium alumina silicate, has been used as a raw material in the production of thermal shock resistant whitewares and sanitarywares. The presence of spodumene results in enhancement of mullitization and imparts better physical and mechanical properties to ceramics. In this study, the influence of Lithium alumina silicate phases on the mechanical properties of standard porcelain stoneware body was investigated. Especially solid-solid reactions were observed between spodumene and quartz or spodumene and clay. These solid-solid reactions bring about a newly formed lithium alumina silicate (LAS) phases. Spodumene allows the development of a low viscosity liquid phase and results in a decrease in closed porosity, also with increase in bulk density, bending strength and elastic modulus.
