NEEDS ANALYSIS IN SOCIAL SCIENCE LEARNING AT PRIMARY SCHOOLThis study was aimed at exploring the obstacles and the needs in teaching social science at the primary school level. A descriptive approach method was used in this study. The data was obtained by observing the learning process, analyzing the teaching materials and media in learning, and analyzing the students’ test scores. The study was conducted for 5 months starting from April 2017 to August 2017. The collected data were examined by triangulation techniques to determine the relationship and comparability of the data. Data were then analyzed using the interactive-miles analysis according to Miles Huberman. The results show that the hand books were not interesting enough as there were too many theories but few pictures which would not encourage students to think critically; teachers tended to adopt a teacher-centered approach of teaching in which they dominated the class with their explanation and there were limited interactive sessions; the students tended to memorize more than master the theories; having limited teaching medias, the teachers made the learning process become abstract, while primary-school students needed to have activities which encouraged their way of thinking from concrete into abstract. An innovation which suits primary school students’ character is needed to create a meaningful learning process.

In this study, we explored the relationship between extracurricular (formal and informal) music activity participation and music and Chinese language academic achievements of primary school students in China. Fourth graders ( N = 10,958) reported their demographic information and extracurricular music activity participation, and completed two standardized academic achievement tests, one on music and another on the Chinese language. Results showed that students’ music activity participation was related to higher music academic achievement after controlling for gender, school location, and family socioeconomic status. The effect of students’ informal music activity participation on their music academic achievements was greater than that of students’ formal music activity participation. Remarkably, students’ informal music activity participation was also positively related to their Chinese language academic achievement, while formal music activity participation showed a negative correlation with academic achievement in Chinese language. Findings contributed to an increased understanding of the influence of different kinds of extracurricular music activities on students’ academic developments.

In line with the district development program of Dharmasraya regency, namely the Dharmasraya Smart City Program and the implementation of Dharmasraya Smart Education, Edugame is currently one of the favourite innovations being used in the teaching and learning process for the primary school students. This study was aimed at creating a learning innovation using Edugame as a media for conveying information to students as well as inviting students to play. In addition, the approach method used was in the form of media development using the ADDIE (Analysis Design Develop Implementation and Evaluation) development method. This development method was started by conducting the field observations, then designing the Edugame interface to evaluate the shortcomings of the Edugame. From the results of the whiteboard test, it was proven that this application had succeeded in delivering learning materials to primary school students of SDN 08 Pulau Punjung, Dharmasraya Regency, West Sumatra. In sum, the teachers are assisted by the Edugame since the students learn independently to explore each Edugame and try to get the highest score. Studies have shown that students’ essay writing abilities of primary school students are low. As such, this study was carried out to examine the extent of the effects of using thinking maps on the teaching of Malay language essay writing among Year Five students. In this study, the researchers used a quasi-experimental method involving a study sample consisting of 64 primary school students were divided equally into a treatment group and a control group. The former used thinking maps in essay writing learning, while the latter used a traditional method. A pre-test and a post-test were used to obtain the data, which were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 21. For the treatment group, the analysis of data showed students’ mean post-test scores were significantly higher than their mean pre-test scores, indicating they made significant improvements in essay writing in terms of content and ideation. The same analysis also showed students’ mean post-test scores in the treatment group were significantly higher than those of the control group, indicating the former outperformed the latter. These findings have a practical implication for the current teaching practice. Malay language teachers can use thinking maps as a teaching tool to help primary school students effectively learn to write essays.

This study was designed to determine the factors affecting hopelessness about the future of 10–12-year-old Turkish primary school students. Firstly, descriptive factor analysis was applied in order to determine the factors affecting hopelessness levels, then a structural equation model (SEM) was utilized to describe the relationship between the specified factors and hopelessness; these relationships were tested by LISREL 8.54. The results indicated that the preteenagers' level of hopelessness was adversely affected by support received from parents and friends. The hopelessness level was also significantly affected by the preteenagers' positive self-definition and parents' educational level.
