A meta-analysis of findings from twenty-four controlled evaluations showed that computer-based education (CBE) usually has positive effects on adult learners. CBE raised the examination scores of such students by 0.42 standard deviations in the average study—a moderate-size but statistically significant effect. Two study features appeared to be related to the size of achievement effect reported in the studies: type of use of CBE and publication source for the studies. CBE also reduced substantially the amount of time needed for instruction. Reliable conclusions could not be reached about affective or long-term cognitive effects of CBE because of the small number of studies that investigated such effects.

BackgroundDuration of untreated psychosis (DUP) is one of the few potentially modifiable predictors of outcomes of schizophrenia. Long DUP as a predictor of poor short-term outcome has been addressed in previous meta-analyses, but the long-term effects of DUP remain unclear.AimsTo analyse the associations between DUP and long-term outcomes of schizophrenia.MethodA systematic literature search was performed using seven electronic databases and manual searches. Random effects weighted meta-analysis with correlation coefficients was used to pool the results.ResultsWe identified 3493 unique publications, from which 33 samples met our predefined selection criteria. Long DUP correlated statistically significantly with poor general symptomatic outcome, more severe positive and negative symptoms, lesser likelihood of remission and poor social functioning and global outcome (correlations 0.13–0.18). Long DUP was not associated with employment, quality of life or hospital treatment.ConclusionsThe small but mostly consistent correlation between long DUP and poor outcome indicates that early intervention in psychosis may have at least subtle positive effects on the long-term course of illness.

The aim of the study was to evaluate if the use of postural textured insoles or other types of stimulating insoles improved the control of postural balance (range of anteroposterior and middle-lateral sway of the Center of Pressure on different surfaces and in conditions of closed or open eyes) and the spatiotemporal parameters of gait (stride duration, stride length, Centre of Pressure sway, cadence, velocity, walking distance, step-by-step variability) in patients affected by Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson's disease. Materials and methods: eight studies were included, RCT, meta-analysis and comparative cohort studies, through research on various platforms such as PubMed Advanced and Scopus, as well as in peer-reviewed journals. The enrolled participants were patients with S.M. or Parkinson in idiopathic form and non-advanced phase, excluding patients with comorbid conditions or clinical history that could influence their condition. These were submitted to intervention with different types of insoles and, because of the insufficient amount of data about the effects in the medium and long term, the results relating to the immediate effects of the proprioceptive insoles are reported with greater reliability. The insoles promote more significant effects in the condition of static balance with closed eyes; the effects on the gait pattern seem to be modestly positive, from both the biomechanical articular and muscular point of view. Despite the results of the study appear heterogeneous because of the greater proprioceptive information derives from muscle, joint and other sources of sensory feedback (and not only those coming from the plantar surface one), the use of textured insoles or other types of stimulating insoles seems to have positive effects on the postural balance and gait. However, the effects in the medium and long term and the cutaneous adaptations of the plantar surface in response to the use of these orthoses remain to be investigated: recently, these elements have been studied by a protocol study for RCT, which lays the foundation for further investigations in this field.

Education in Greenland is a central parameter in achieving the long-term goals of the Government in terms of providing the population with the necessary means to take up positions as skilled labour. The research aim is to implement theoretical and empirical analysis of adult education in Greenland underpinning the identification of challenges and opportunities in adult education in Greenland. The empirical study of the exploratory nature was carried out in November-December 2020. Data collection was based on document analysis as well as interview. The obtained data were processed via content analysis. Findings of the theoretical analysis allow defining challenges as externally created problem situations. The structuring content analysis allows identifying challenges and opportunities in adult education in Greenland. The summarizing content analysis reveals that adult education within the educational system in Greenland has not been properly addressed. The empirical findings allow concluding that adult education in Greenland is to be shaped in such a way that it responds to the emergent challenges. The present study has some limitations. The new research question has been formulated: What modern skills (creativity, digital skills, entrepreneurship, languages, etc) do adult learners in Greenland need most? Future research will focus the extension of the dataset.

Cognitive symptoms are a core feature of schizophrenia and are related to an unfavorable disease outcome. So far, there are no satisfactory pharmacological approaches to address cognitive symptoms. For some time now, aerobic exercise has been demonstrated in various trials to be a promising candidate for this indication. The aim of this brief qualitative review was to present the most recent meta-analyses regarding the capacity of exercise to improve cognition in schizophrenia patients. Additionally, we give a short overview of the effects in other conditions, like healthy subjects and patients with major depression. We conducted a focused literature search using the PubMed database, concentrating on meta-analyses which are based on a systematic search. The most recent meta-analysis investigating the efficacy of aerobic exercise on cognitive impairments in schizophrenia patients provides evidence that exercise has positive effects on cognitive functioning in this population. However, the effect seems not to be specific; there were positive findings regarding healthy subjects and patients with depressive disorders as well, even if they were less consistent. As most available trials have a small to modest sample size and have no consensus with regard to the intervention regime, nor to the assessment of cognition, the findings are difficult to generalize. In the future, standardized clinical trials focusing on the long-term effects of exercise are needed to evaluate whether the improvements in cognition are sustainable.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the future of the global economies appears gloomy as policy, industry and academia stakeholders assess the immediate adverse effects. This research meta-analysis studies on the impact of epidemics and pandemics on the longer-term performance of national economies covering the past 30 years. The findings indicate that the impact of pandemics on economies for periods of over two years might move from the immediate adverse effects to small positive effects. Several moderators were found to affect this relationship, including socio-economic and methodological factors. The findings agree with a significant amount of existing literature and are in line with the neo-classic economic theories for a possible return to economic growth after a major economic shock. Nevertheless, issues of publication bias should also be taken into consideration.
