In this article the authors discuss the consequences of the “deindustrialization” of America for the health benefits coverage of the U.S. population, the majority of which receive their health benefits through their workplace. The shift of employment from industry to services, from union to nonunion, from full-time to part-time employment, and from high-paying to low-paying jobs is having a most profound impact on the health benefits coverage of the U.S. population.

Analysis of the responses of Asian American ( n = 178), African American ( n = 1,026), and European American ( n = 8,118) full-time workers to 21 nationwide surveys representative of the U.S. labor force from 1972 through 1996 showed the job satisfaction of Asian Americans compared to that of the other two groups was affected by whether subjects were born in the United States. In addition, there were no gender differences in job satisfaction among African Americans and European Americans who were and were not born in the U.S., but there were such differences among Asian Americans.

Economic contributions of the green industry in each state of the United States were estimated for 2007–08 using regional economic multipliers, together with information on horticulture product sales, employment, and payroll reported by the U.S. Economic Census and a nursery industry survey. Total sales revenues for all sectors were $176.11 billion, direct output was $117.40 billion, and total output impacts, including indirect and induced regional economic multiplier effects of nonlocal output, were $175.26 billion. The total value added impact was $107.16 billion, including employee compensation, proprietor (business owner) income, other property income, and indirect business taxes paid to state/local and federal governments. The industry had direct employment of 1.20 million full-time and part-time jobs and total employment impacts of 1.95 million jobs in the broader economy. The largest individual industry sectors in terms of employment and value added impacts were Landscaping services (1,075,343 jobs, $50.3 billion), Nursery and greenhouse production (436,462 jobs, $27.1 billion), and Building materials and garden equipment and supplies stores (190,839 jobs, $9.7 billion). The top 10 individual states in terms of employment contributions were California (257,885 jobs), Florida (188,437 jobs), Texas (82,113 jobs), North Carolina (81,113 jobs), Ohio (79,707 jobs), Pennsylvania (75,604 jobs), New Jersey (67,993 jobs), Illinois (67,382 jobs), Georgia (66,042 jobs), and Virginia (58,677 jobs). The total value added of the U.S. green industry represented 0.76% of U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2007, and up to 1.60% of GDP in individual states. On the basis of a similar previous study for 2002 (Hall et al., 2006), total sales of horticultural products and services in 2007–08 increased by 3.5%, and total output impacts increased by 29.2%, or an average annual rate of 5.8% in inflation-adjusted terms.

This longitudinal study examines the perceptions, attitudes, and preferences of the adult learners in higher education institutions in the United States. A qualitative design was utilized, engaging respondents from six geographic regions in the United States. This three-year, longitudinal research results were compared and contrasted with the eight principles of the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning, and best practices for meeting the educational and professional needs of the adult learner were proposed [1]. Since Knowles [2] published his seminal work on adult learners and their unique characteristics, there have emerged a growing number of studies categorizing these students.  Also known as nontraditional students, these individuals have been identified as sharing distinctive commonalities, such as: (1) full time employment with part-time enrollment, (2) dependent support (whether married or single parent status), (3) flexibility in academic and professional advisement, (4) acknowledgement of work- and life-experiences, and (5) are constrained by time limitations [3,4,5].

Four-year cooperative engineering programs are becoming more common in the United States. Cooperative engineering programs typically involve a “parent” institution with an established engineering program and one or more “satellite” institutions which typically have few or no engineering programs and are located in an area where there are few, if any, other local opportunities for students to study engineering. In spite of an extensive literature search, the investigators were not able to find much information on these types of programs. Thus, in an effort to learn more about the characteristics of such cooperative programs, Program Directors from universities involved in four-year cooperative engineering programs were asked about the nature of their programs. The purpose of the research project was to learn about the different approaches used in developing and administering cooperative engineering programs, and to understand the strength and weaknesses of the different approaches. A web-based survey, consisting of 26 open-ended questions, was sent to Program Directors from eleven universities; seven responded to all or a portion the survey questions. The survey requested information on majors offered, enrollment, ABET accreditation, age and geographic distribution of students, administrative policies, tuition practices, and other such characteristics of each program. The findings show that most of these cooperative programs have been in existence less than ten years. All are ABET accredited or plan to seek ABET accreditation. Most of the programs offer majors only in Civil, Electrical, and/or Mechanical Engineering. Administrative structures and procedures were similar among all the programs with only minor differences. Although four-year cooperative engineering programs are a relatively new phenomena in engineering education, the number of such programs appears to be increasing. The investigators expected to find that the majority of students in these programs were non-traditional, part-time students, who were geographically bound to the area served by the cooperative engineering program. However, the survey results revealed that the majority of students in these programs are full- time, traditional students, who live within 100 miles of the institution housing the program. The students apparently choose these programs to avoid the costs of room and board at the program’s parent campus. The findings of this survey are believed to be the first such survey done on four-year cooperative engineering programs in the U.S. The results of this research may be helpful to universities planning to start a cooperative engineering program.

Volunteer police are used in both the United States and the Unite Kingdom to expand the services provided by full-time police personnel. The models of volunteer policing that have developed in the United States and the United Kingdom are based on the same concept, but differ in their level of operational preparedness and training. The utilization and confidence of these volunteer police in performing the functions of the police has been understudied. This current study builds on previous studies to develop a broader understanding of the confidence in training of part-time volunteer police officers by using a convenience sampling of three U.K. Northern Police Forces and three U.S. Florida Sheriff’s Offices. Results show the impact of individual-level variables on confidence in training preparation, with time since initial training having the largest impact. Later formal professional training appears to have little to no impact on confidence. Limitations and policy implications are discussed.

This chapter discusses how the pastoral outreach among Latinos today in dioceses, parishes, and apostolic movements extends the efforts of those who promoted Hispanic ministry during the Encuentro era. According to current statistics, more than 80 percent of the 195 dioceses in the United States have diocesan staff assigned to coordinate Hispanic ministry, though with varying degrees of time commitment ranging from part-time coordinators to full-time directors. However, several diocesan directors have articulated to U.S. bishops their growing concerns related to the closing of diocesan offices for Hispanic ministry or their placement under multicultural ministry offices and their alarm that while the Hispanic presence continues to grow and demand a more robust ministerial response, diocesan personnel and/or resources for Hispanic ministry are diminishing in a number of archdioceses.

The authors produce estimates for a new and better rate of underemployment for 25 countries using the European Labor Force Survey that is based on workers’ reports of their preferred hours at the going wage. Both voluntary and involuntary part-time workers report they want more hours. Full-time workers who say they want to change their hours, mostly say they want to reduce them. When the Great Recession hit, the number of hours of those who said they wanted more hours increased, and the number of hours of those who said they wanted fewer hours decreased. The percentage of workers in both categories remains elevated. The authors provide evidence for the United Kingdom and the United States as well as from an international sample that underemployment lowers pay in the years after the Great Recession, but the unemployment rate does not. They also find evidence for the United States that decreases in the home ownership rate have helped to keep wage pressure in check. Underemployment replaces unemployment as the main influence on wages in the years since the Great Recession.

An American Language is a political history of the Spanish language in the United States. The nation has always been multilingual and the Spanish language in particular has remained as an important political issue into the present. After the U.S.-Mexican War, the Spanish language became a language of politics as Spanish speakers in the U.S. Southwest used it to build territorial and state governments. In the twentieth century, Spanish became a political language where speakers and those opposed to its use clashed over what Spanish's presence in the United States meant. This book recovers this story by using evidence that includes Spanish language newspapers, letters, state and territorial session laws, and federal archives to profile the struggle and resilience of Spanish speakers who advocated for their language rights as U.S. citizens. Comparing Spanish as a language of politics and as a political language across the Southwest and noncontiguous territories provides an opportunity to measure shifts in allegiance to the nation and exposes differing forms of nationalism. Language concessions and continued use of Spanish is a measure of power. Official language recognition by federal or state officials validates Spanish speakers' claims to US citizenship. The long history of policies relating to language in the United States provides a way to measure how U.S. visions of itself have shifted due to continuous migration from Latin America. Spanish-speaking U.S. citizens are crucial arbiters of Spanish language politics and their successes have broader implications on national policy and our understanding of Americans.

This section, updated regularly on the blog Palestine Square, covers popular conversations related to the Palestinians and the Arab-Israeli conflict during the quarter 16 November 2017 to 15 February 2018: #JerusalemIstheCapitalofPalestine went viral after U.S. president Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and announced his intention to move the U.S. embassy there from Tel Aviv. The arrest of Palestinian teenager Ahed Tamimi for slapping an Israeli soldier also prompted a viral campaign under the hashtag #FreeAhed. A smaller campaign protested the exclusion of Palestinian human rights from the agenda of the annual Creating Change conference organized by the US-based National LGBTQ Task Force in Washington. And, UNRWA publicized its emergency funding appeal, following the decision of the United States to slash funding to the organization, with the hashtag #DignityIsPriceless.
