In the context of an algorithmically designed workplace, the glitch traces the form of the unforeseen social reality. What this paper does is present glitch poetics as a methodology for exploring futures of language-technology hybridity that do not emerge from philosophical, social science, or computer science research. Glitch poetics is concerned with linguistic errors in the same way that Glitch Art was concerned with the pixelations and clicks of 1990s and early 2000s compression mechanisms. AI-authorship is a potent area of study for glitch poetics because it is distinguishable by evidently faulty language forms, whose faultiness contains a recognizably contemporary “texture.” The first half of the paper includes an overview of AI research and practice from philosophical, technical, visual and sonic art fields, and current ideas in concept-forming, error, and innovation, such as “hyperstition,” “diagramming” and “glitch.” I then turn to the specific case of language acquisition and synthesis in AI and what the glitch method might have to offer in this area. Drawing on the work of Peli Grietzer, I ask whether AI-authored texts can be said to have a “vibe” distinct from that of the author’s whose text it is trained on, and therefore has its own basis for forming new social possibility. In one attempt to answer such a question, I make an AI produce faulty, glitchy texts, using a deliberately small corpus, in which the notion of a single-author-trained AI is broken down and confused. I close-read the odd language-salad of the texts written by this “small data synthesis” glitch method in order to discern whether there is a “structure of feeling” (Williams) in them: a pre-emergent sign of a social being-to-come. The paper concludes that making AI produce texts that are manifestly wrong offers a different trajectory for what AI can offer intellectual thought: one that is more potent than the progression towards more and more human-like textual impersonations. What is necessary, however, in order to take advantage of these strange new language forms, is to divert attention towards them in genuinely experimental, thoughtful situations, and to seek to absorb them into contemporary discourse. My proposition is that, along with “machine behavior,” there should be a concerted effort to invoke and interpret “machine misbehavior” as a form of thinking to come, both within and beyond the field of language-synthesis.

We contend that a significant contributor to this failure is the lack of breadth in project design and implementation, and in the training of project implementers. Successful ICTD interventions, in addition to being based on the best computer science research has to offer, must be guided by the relevant social, cultural, political, economic and gender factors that underlie the interaction of the technology with the community into which it is being placed. We therefore argue that efforts to distance computer science from the broader context of ICTD scholarship and practice are misguided. ICTD should be recognized as a truly interdisciplinary area of research and practice. We further argue that ICTD as a discipline has a particular need for academic practitioners. We close with a compilation of current known ICTD academic efforts worldwide.

In the era of Globalization, advancement of technology and stiff competition, particularly, in the I.T. Industry, companies have to adopt new H.R. strategies and practices so as to constantly evolve and grow. In this context, existing recruitment strategies have to be replaced by new strategies. Many companies are now extensively depending on the internet to connect to larger audiences globally. Organizations are in a position to attract profiles, resumes from potential candidates by announcing their vacancies on their own websites. E-recruitment is evoking interest among the companies typically over the last few years. The spread of information technology and growth of Internet has paved way for companies willing to hunt for talent on the job seeking websites. In the years to come, social networking will soon be an indispensable part of the hiring process. It is cost effective, does not require setting up an office and forms an effective tool for recruiters. The main purpose of this study was to understand the application of factor analysis in social science research and to reduce a large number of variables into manageable smaller factors for further analysis of the employers’ perception on social media recruitment with reference to the I.T. Sector in Bangalore.

AbstractResearch topics rise and fall in popularity over time, some more swiftly than others. The fastest rising topics are typically called bursts; for example “deep learning”, “internet of things” and “big data”. Being able to automatically detect and track bursty terms in the literature could give insight into how scientific thought evolves over time. In this paper, we take a trend detection algorithm from stock market analysis and apply it to over 30 years of computer science research abstracts, treating the prevalence of each term in the dataset like the price of a stock. Unlike previous work in this domain, we use the free text of abstracts and titles, resulting in a finer-grained analysis. We report a list of bursty terms, and then use historical data to build a classifier to predict whether they will rise or fall in popularity in the future, obtaining accuracy in the region of 80%. The proposed methodology can be applied to any time-ordered collection of text to yield past and present bursty terms and predict their probable fate.

PurposeCitation is an important measure of quality, and it plays a vital role in evaluating scientific research. However, citation advantage varies from discipline to discipline, subject to subject and topic to topic. This study aims to compare the citation advantage of open access and toll access articles from four subfields of computer science.Design/methodology/approachThis research studies the articles published by two prestigious publishers: Springer and Elsevier in the author-pays charges model from 2011 to 2015. For experimentation, four sub-domains of computer science are selected including (a) artificial intelligence, (b) human–computer interaction, (c) computer vision and graphics, and (d) software engineering. The open-access and toll-based citation advantage is studied and analyzed at the micro level within the computer science domain by performing independent sample t-tests.FindingsThe results of the study highlight that open access articles have a higher citation advantage as compared to toll access articles across years and sub-domains. Further, an increase in open access articles has been observed from 2011 to 2015. The findings of the study show that the citation advantage of open access articles varies among different sub-domains of a subject. The study contributed to the body of knowledge by validating the positive movement toward open access articles in the field of computer science and its sub-domains. Further, this work added the success of the author-pays charges model in terms of citation advantage to the literature of open access.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to examine the citation advantage of the author-pays charges model at a subject level (computer science) along with four sub-domains of computer science.

There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of “theories of learning” at play in the field of education. Given scant agreements on the meaning of “learning” and the purpose of “theory,” such quantity is perhaps unsurprising. Arguably, however, this situation is indefensible and debilitating in an academic domain so focused on interpreting and influencing learning. We describe our own efforts to come to terms with this matter. Oriented by Conceptual Metaphor Theory and network theory, we are attempting to “map” contemporary treatments of learning—whether implicit or explicit, written or spoken, descriptive or prescriptive, formal or informal, scientific or folk. We report on our iterative process, evolving design, and emergent insights. We discuss the potential relevance of this and similar efforts for the future of educational research and practice.

<p><b>The fact that comfort is a subjective state of the mind is widely accepted by engineers, architects and building scientists. Despite this, capturing all the complexity, subjectivity and richness of this construct in models that are useful in building science contexts is far from straightforward. By prioritizing usability, building science has produced models of comfort (e.g., acoustic, visual and thermal) that overly simplify this concept to something nearly objective that can be directly associated with people’s physiology and measurable and quantifiable environmental factors. This is a contradiction because, even if comfort is supposed to be subjective, most of the complexity of “the subject” is avoided by focusing on physiology; and, even if comfort is supposed to reside in the mind, the cognitive processes that characterize the mind are disregarded. This research partially mitigates this contradiction by exploring people’s non-physical personal factors and cognition within the context of their comfort and by proposing a way in which they can be incorporated into building science research and practice. This research refers to these elements together—i.e., people’s non-physical personal factors and cognition—as “the mind”.</b></p> <p>This research proposes a new qualitative model of the Feeling of Comfort that embraces “the mind”. This model was developed from the results of a first study in which 18 people—from Chile and New Zealand—were asked to describe “a home with good daylight” and “a warm home” in their own words. These results were then replicated in a second study in which another group of 24 people—also from Chile and New Zealand—described “a home with good acoustic performance”, “a home with good air quality” and “a pleasantly cool home”. The Feeling of Comfort model not only was capable of making sense of the new data (gathered in this second study) but also proved to be simple enough to be useful in the context of comfort research and practice. For instance, it guided the development of a quantitative Feeling of Comfort model and also of a prototype building simulation tool that embraces “the mind” and thus can potentially estimate people’s Feeling of Comfort.</p> <p>This research concludes that embracing “the mind” is not only possible but necessary. The reason for this is that “the mind” plays a significant role in the development of people’s comfort. Thus, theories and models of comfort that ignore it fail to represent properly the concept of comfort held by the people for whom buildings are designed. However, incorporating “the mind” into building science’s research and practice implies embracing tools, research methods and conceptual frameworks that have historically not been used by such a discipline. Specifically, it concludes that building science should normalize a more holistic view of comfort and perform more exploratory and qualitative research.</p>
