Effect of Nutrient Management in Lowland Rice for Improving Productivity, Profitability and Energetics under the Mid Hill of Nagaland

On-Farm trail was conducted in Longleng district of Nagaland during the kharif season of 2014-15 and 2015-16 to find out the most suitable nutrient management practices viz. recommended doses of fertilizers (RDF) 80:60:40 kg NPK/ha, locally available weed biomass (Eupatorium @ 10 t/ha) and farmers practices at farmers field of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Longleng, Nagaland. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Block Design. Result revealed that growth and yield parameters were recorded maximum under RDF and followed by Eupatorium @ 10 t/ha compared to farmers practice. The maximum grain yield (3590 kg/ha) was with RDF closely followed by weed biomass @10t/ha (3270 kg/ha) over the farmer's practices (2730 kg/ha), respectively. Grain yield was increased by 31.5 % in RDF and 11.8 % in Eupatorium @ 10 t/ha compared to the farmer's practices. Similarly, production efficiency was recorded the highest with RDF (28 kg/ha/day) followed by Eupatorium @ 10 t/ha (25.5 kg/ha/day) and farmers practice (21.3 kg/ha/day). With respect to economics, the maximum net returns and benefit: cost ratio (B: C ratio) were recorded with RDF (Rs.18850/ha and 1.91) as compared to other treatments. Economic efficiency was also noted highest under RDF (Rs.147.27/ha/day) followed by Eupatorium @10 t/ha (Rs.128.36/ha/day). Hence, it may be concluded that the farmer’s practices can be replaced with the adoption of RDF or locally available weed biomass (Eupatorium) as a source of nutrition for achieving the higher productivity and profitability of the lowland rice under the mid-hill altitude condition of Nagaland

The study was conducted at the farmer’s field in Sylhet under AEZ 20 during three consecutive years 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 to determine the productivity and profitability of cropping patterns viz. IP: improved pattern (Mustard-T. Aus-T. Aman rice) by introducing high yielding varieties and improved management practices and FP: farmer’s pattern (Fallow-T. Aus-T. Aman rice). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with six dispersed replications. Results showed that the improved pattern with management practices provided 6.88 and 22.84 % higher grain yield of T. Aus and T. Aman rice, respectively; also contributed higher mean rice equivalent yield (9.44 t ha-1) compared to farmer’s pattern.Sustainable yield index (0.36), production efficiency (39.75 kg ha-1day-1), and land use efficiency (75.98 %) were maximum in Mustard-T. Aus- T. Aman rice cropping system on an average. Similarly, the highest mean gross margin (Tk.1,12,425 ha-1) with benefit cost ratio (2.13) was obtained from improved pattern. Three years results revealed that 24% extra cost provides an ample scope of considerable improvement of the productivity with the inclusion of Mustard before T. Aus rice in improved pattern. The study was conducted to determine the yield and economic consequences of two cropping patterns viz. improved cropping pattern (Wheat-Jute-T.aman rice) and farmers, pattern (Wheat-Jute-T.aman rice) through incorporation of modern high yielding varieties and improved management practices for crop production. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with five dispersed replications in farmers’ condition in Faridpur during two consecutive years 2011-12 and 2012-13. Two years mean data showed that the improved management practices for the pattern provided significantly higher yield in Wheat, Jute and T.aman rice. The gross return (Tk. 265495/ha) and net return (Tk.123087/ha) of improved pattern were 9 % and 18 % higher, respectively compared to that of farmers’ pattern with only 3% extra cost. The higher benefit cost ratio, land use efficiency, production efficiency and sustainable yield index indicated the superiority of the improved pattern over the farmers’ practices.J. A field experiment was conducted at Agronomy Field Laboratory, Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Dumki, Patuakhali from July 2018 to November 2018 to evaluate the effect of sunflower residues and herbicides on the yield and economic performance of transplanted Aman rice. Weed control methods tested were T1 = weedy check (Unweeded control), T2 = Weed-free check by hand weeding twice, T3 = Pendimethalin, T4 = Pretilachlor, T5 = Butachlor, T6 = Pyrazosulfuron ethyl, T7 = Bensulfuron methyl + Acetachlor, T8 = Bispyriback sodium, T9 = 2,4-D amine, T10 = MCPA, T11 = Sunflower residues, T12 = Sunflower residues + 100% Pyrazosulfuron ethyl, T13 = Sunflower residues + 75% Pyrazosulfuron ethyl, T14 = Sunflower residues + 50% Pyrazosulfuron ethyl. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with fourteen treatments replicated thrice. Weedy check registered significantly the highest total weed density (354.67 m-2) and total weed dry matter (51.81 g-2) while weed-free treatment by hand weeding twice recorded significantly the lowest total weed density (6.67 m-2) and total weed dry matter 0.49 g-2) . Weedy check produced the highest weed index (34.24%) and hand weeding produced the lowest. Among different herbicides applied alone, butachlor had the lowest total weed density (15 m-2) and total weed dry matter (6.43 g-2) after hand weeding. Hand weeding recorded the highest grain yield (5.14 t ha-1) which was statistically similar to pendimethalin, pretilachlor, butachlor, bensulfuron methyl + acetachlor and sunflower residues + 100% pyrazosulfuron ethyl. Higher grain yield was attributed to a higher number of panicle m-2, number of filled grains panicle-1 and 1000-grain weight. The highest gross margin (22955 Tk. ha-1) and benefit-cost ratio (1.32) were obtained from butachlor. Integration of sunflower residues with pyrazosulfuron ethyl produced effective weed suppression and satisfactory yield comparable to butachlor. Although the integration is less profitable than butachlor the farmers can use this technology as a feasible and environmentally sound approach in transplanted Aman rice field. Bangladesh Agron. The research was conducted at Beltari Sandhikharka-10, Arghakhanchi district to study about the effect of various doses of boron on growth and yield attributing characters of cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) during off-season from February to June in 2020. Five treatments; B0 (control/no application), B1: 2kg/ha, B2: 4kg/ha, B3: 6kg/ha, B4: 8kg/ha which are the different doses of boron application were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 4 replications. The growth parameters like plant height, number of leaves per plant leaf length and leaf breadth of largest leaf were recorded multiple times with 15 days interval. Days to curd initiation and Days from curd initiation to harvest were recorded by regular field observation. The yield parameters; curd weight with leaves, Marketable curd weight, average curd yield, incidence of hollowing were recorded during harvest. The economics from application of boron doses in cauliflower production was obtained in terms of cost of cultivation, gross returns, net returns, and benefit cost ratio. The result showed that the growth and yield attributing characters of cauliflower were significantly affected by application of boron in which the value of these parameters was found significantly higher in B1 followed by other treatments. The average curd yield of cauliflower in B1 was found to be 12.39 mt/ha which was 48.92% higher than that of B0 with curd yield 8.32 mt/ha. Similarly, the net return was found significantly the highest in B1 and the lowest in B0. The result showed that application of boron in the range of 2-4 kg/ha is preferred to control and higher doses in respect of both productivity and economics.

The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse during 2017 and 2018 growing seasons to evaluate the impact of the shading and various nutrition programs on mitigating heat stress, reducing the use of chemical minerals, improving the reproductive growth and yield of tomato plant. Split-plot within Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications was conducted in this study. Shading factor was allocated in the main plots and the nutrition programs distributed randomly in the subplots. Results indicate that shading resulted in the decrease of daytime temperature by 5.7˚C as an average for both seasons; thus a significant increasing was found in leaf contents of macro nutrients (Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium), and micro nutrients (Iron, Zinc and Boron), except the Iron content in 2018 growing season. Furthermore, shading improved significantly the reproductive growth and tomato yield. Among the plant nutrition programs, the integrated nutrient management (INM) including the application of organic substances, bio inoculum of AMF and 50% of the recommended dose of chemical fertilizers; lead to the enhancement of nutrients content, reproductive characteristics and plant yield. Generally, combination of both shading and INM showed positive effects on plants nutrient status and persisting balance on tomato flowering growth and fruits yield.

AbstractA field experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of different manures and fertilizers on the growth and yield of knol-khol (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes) at Dr. Purnendu Gain Field Laboratory of Agrotechnology Discipline, Khulna University, Khulna from November 2014 to February 2015. The single factor experiment comprised of different types of fertilizers and manures viz., T0 (Control), T1 (Recommended doses of NPK), T2 (Cow dung), T3 (Vermicompost), T4 (Poultry manure), T5 (50 % Cow dung + 50 % NPK), T6 (50% Vermicompost + 50% Cow dung), T7 (50% Vermicompost + 50 % Poultry manure) and T8 (25% Cow dung+ 25% Vermicompost+ 25% Poultry manure + 25% NPK). The Experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. The maximum plant height was obtained from the treatment T1 at 25, 35 and 45 Days after transplanting (DAT). The maximum spread of canopy was 36.75 cm, 52.50 cm and 66.05 cm from the treatment T3, T7 and T2, respectively. The maximum economic yield (21.92 t/ha) and biological yield (40.083 t/ha) were found in the treatment T1 and T7, respectively. Highest benefit cost ratio (3.07) was obtained from the treatment T1whilethe minimum (0.57) was obtained from T3 which indicates that high cost of vermicompost affect net return severely. Although, T1 produced maximum benefit cost ratio, the treatment T4 and T2 are very close to T1 and also statistically similar. So, we can consider poultry manure and cow dung for our soil health, environmental benefits and ecological safety.

Background: Yield of summer tomato do not always reach the full production potential. Improved management such as, training and pruning could improve the yield and fruit quality of tomatoes. The production of the healthy and improved quality tomato crop depends on various cultural practices like training systems as it prevents overcrowding for sunlight thus improves air circulation under humid and moist conditions where tomato plants are more prone to fungal diseases, avoids poor fruit set and assimilates competition. Methods: The study was carried out during kharif seasons of 2017 and 2018 with Solan Lalima variety, in the Research Farm of Dr. YSP UHF Nauni, Solan, HP to find out the response of plants to management practices on yield, quality and cost of production. The experiment consisting of two planting methods, three mulching treatments, two level of training system, laid out in randomized complete block design with three repetitions. Result: Plants trained to two stem gave the maximum fruit TSS (4.75 oB), ascorbic acid content (30.79 mg/100 g), lycopene content (5.84 mg/100 g) and shelf life (11.35 days). From the economics, it was apparent that tomato produced by the two stem training system exhibited better performance in terms of benefit cost ratio.

The experiment was conducted at Multi Location Testing (MLT) site, Moulvibazar, Bangladesh during rabi season of 2016-17 and 2017-18 to study the profitability of intercropping of hybrid maize with vegetables and spices. Five intercrop combinations of hybrid maize along with sole maize were arranged in randomized complete block design (RCBD) replicated six times. There were six treatments viz., T1: Maize + potato, T2: Maize + red amaranth, T3: Maize + spinach, T4: Maize+ data shak, T5: Maize + coriander and T6: Maize as sole. The grain yield of maize in intercropped combination varied significantly. The highest grain yield (9.71 t ha-1) was in sole maize. The highest maize equivalent yield 15.60 t ha-1 was recorded from the treatment T1 (100% maize + potato) whereas the lowest yield (8.61 t ha-1) was obtained from the treatment T6 (sole maize). The highest gross return (Tk. 312000 ha-1) and benefit cost ratio (3.29) was obtained from the treatment T1 (100% maize + potato). On the contrary, the lowest gross margin (Tk. 101600 ha-1) was obtained from treatment T2 (maize + red amaranth). It revealed that the combination of maize with potato was more compatible and profitable intercropping system in Sylhet region of Bangladesh Bangladesh Agron. J. 2018, 21(2): 73-78

Banana (Musa spp.) is a vigorously growing, monocotyledonous herbaceous plant. Though Bangladesh is more suitable for production of banana but its productivity is very low due to a lack of improve variety, sustainable production & protection technology, soil fertility and fertilizer management. Fertilizers i.e. nitrogen and potassium are one of the most important elements that can play vital role to increase productivity of banana. Hence, the present research investigation was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November, 2016 to December, 2017 to evaluate the effect of nitrogen & potassium fertilizers on growth and yield and also find out the best combination of N & K fertilizers for economic production of banana. Four levels of Nitrogen (N1=300g Urea/plant, N2=400g Urea/plant, N3=500g Urea/plant and N4=600g Urea/plant) and four potassium (K1=250g MOP/plant, K2=350g MOP/plant, K3=450g MOP/plant, K4=550g MOP/plant) were studied in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The results revealed that the single application of N3=500g Urea/plant, K3=450g MOP/plant and their combination (N3×K3=500g urea/plant×450g MOP/plant) showed more significant increase in morpho-physiological characteristics namely pseudo-stem height (m), pseudo-stem girth (cm), number of functional leaves, total number of leaves per plant, minimum days to bunch maturity & crop duration (days) and increase in yield contributing characters viz. total number of fingers per bunch, total number of hands per bunch, bunch weight (kg/plant), yield (t/ha) and benefit cost ratio in this study. The application of these two fertilizers as single or their interaction would be the most appropriate level for getting the superior growth and yield performance of banana.

Field experiment was conducted during rice fallow season (January-March), 2011 and 2012 to study the effect of DAP application to preceding rice in last irrigation and foliar nutrition to black gram on the productivity and profitability of black gram(ADT 3) under rice fallow condition. The results indicated that application of DAP at 50 kg/ha to preceding rice in last irrigation and foliar spray of DAP (2 per cent) and KCl (1 per cent) at 30 and 45 days after sowing to black gram registered higher plant height (24.6 cm) at 20 DOS number of pods per plant (18.4), grain yield (639 kg/ha), net returns (Rs.22290/ha) and additional income (Rs. 7563/ha). Application of DAP at 50 kg/ha in last irrigation to preceding rice produced significantly higher grain yield of succeeding black gram (613 kg/ha.) over control (488 kg/ha) which was comparable with foliar application of 2 per cent DAP and 1 per cent KCl to black gram. With reference to return per rupee invested, application of DAP at 50 kg/ha to preceding rice in last irrigation registered higher benefit cost ratio of 3.56 in black gram.
