A communication process can be considered success when the communicant receives and understand the message as what the communicators meant. This effective communication will result in the achievement of a communication goal. However, the effective communication might be difficult to happen when both interlocutors do not have the same native language. It happens because the language barriers may influence the process of understanding the message while the communication happens. To overcome the problem, the communicator applies some communication strategies. This comparative study used observations and interviews to examine the communication strategies used by first- and third-year English students of Universitas Gadjah Mada Indonesia during spoken interactions in English with exchange students from Cheng Du Textile College China. The objective of this study is to observe how the first- and third- year study overcome their communication problem while talking with non-English native speaker students and use the data as inputs to develop the next curriculum. The writer uses Tarone’s communicative strategies to identify the students’ strategies. The result shows that ‘Literal Translation’ is not used by English students while communicating with exchange students, ‘Circumlocution’ and ‘Message Abandonment’ are only used by third year students, ‘Appeal for Assistance’ and ‘Topic Avoidance’ are only used by first year students, third year students’ most used strategies are ‘Mime’ and ‘Word Coinage’, and first year students’ most used strategies are ‘Approximation’ and ‘Mime’.

Abstract Introduction Health communication has gained space in medical debates, especially in the public health, since the quality of the communication process, until the context of the patient-physician relationship. The recently inaugurated Medicine courses in Brazil recognize the importance of this interface in the training of medical professionals since the first semester. Methods A questionnaire prepared by professors was applied to medical students from a Brazilian Midwest public university to evaluate their prior knowledge acquired of health communication. Fourteen questions previously prepared were subdivided into three categories. The category chosen for the presentation of these data were: The importance of the study of health communication for Medicine and Public Health. Results Sixty students were interviewed, and 78% of participants assessed the health communication as very important for the medical sciences. 47% say that within the university, this communication is good; 30% consider regular and only 18% feel great. 96% of the students believe that education is the most important factor in determining the quality of health communication process, even when compared with age variables and internet access. The importance of the study of communication to the doctor-patient relationship was considered beneficial, and 74% classified it as essential. Conclusions Thus, we noted that most respondents recognize the importance of health communication in their own training and doctor's relationship with the community. However, it is detected the existence of communication failures in the Brazilian health services, which shows the need for medical training to develop innovative and effective communication strategies in public health. The importance of the study of communication to the patient-physician relationship was considered beneficial, and classified as essential, for medical formation, which reflects in the Brazilian health care system. Key messages Communication failures in the Brazilian health services need attention: it's necessary to develop effective communication strategies in public health. The importance of health communication is recognized in students training and doctor's relationship with the community.

Family-centered practices that build caregiver capacity are a central focus of early intervention services for young children with disabilities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of adapting the ‘Parents Interacting with Infants’ (PIWI) facilitated playgroup model to target effective communication strategies for parents of young children with communication delays. A concurrent multiple baseline across behaviors design with three parent–child dyads was used to determine the effects of the weekly facilitated playgroup model on parents’ successful implementation of communicative strategies and the effects on the children’s communication behaviors. Visual analysis revealed a functional relationship between the seven-week intervention and an increase in parent and child outcomes. Results support the feasibility of using a facilitated playgroup model to enhance parents’ ability to implement effective communication strategies with their children. Clinical implications and future directions for research are discussed.

This paper discusses the importance of effective workplace communication for a professional business graduate aspiring to join the industry. Communicating at workplace is a skill, and can be developed by training on specific strategies used in the communication process. Previous studies have highlighted the importance of skill to communicate effectively and its impact on the employability of engineering students. The secondary data review done by the researcher asserted on the need for training the students on skillful communication while they are in their education years. This will support in their work preparedness, and help them in making productive discussions at workplace. This paper describes the detailed process of a pilot study conducted by the researcher on 102 professional business undergraduates to assess them on their effective communication skills and train them on their preparedness for workplace communication. A pre and posttest method was used to study their responses. The pretest responses highlighted that there were evident gaps in their speaking skills. The researcher devised some communication intervention/strategies that can be used to communicate effectively at workplace with each other. She introduced this intervention to a group of 51 business undergraduate students which were a part of the Experiment group, and trained them on these strategies. A pre and posttest assessment method was used to map the improvement. The results show a significant improvement (more than 45%) in the effective communication style of the Experimental group in understanding the communication strategies which added to the work preparedness for these students. This paper is an attempt to discuss the experiment and describe strategies to improve workplace communication between two/more members of an organization thereby enhancing productive business communication.

Practicing conversations or dialogues in various context or situation is as the essential aspect for students because it smoothen their skill in communication and their English mastery. Whenever people use language to interact, one of the things people are do- ing with it is establishing a relationship between them; between the speaker speaking now and the person who will probably speak next. It means, strategies in communicating put an important role to reach the goal of the interaction or the communication.

This study is to identify the communication strategies of In- donesian university students, especially students of the English De- partment Education Faculty of Muria Kudus University and native speaker used in communication in natural conversation and to find out the possible factors cause the choice of the strategies in the conversation.

The method applied in this study is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study are fourth semester students of English De- partment of Muria Kudus University and one native speaker. The data were obtained by inviting and asking the students and the na- tive speaker to have a conversation for around one hour. Then, the conversation was recorded by using camera. The recorded data were transferred into the printed one as a script. The data analysis was conducted in several ways, among other transcribing the recorded data, identifying each utterance and displaying the result in the table, classifying the utterances based on the type of strategies, and inter- preting the communication or the conversation.

The results showed that there were 306 turns in the conver- sation between the students and the native speaker. The types of strategies used in the conversations were Circumlocution (C) for 38.98 % (23), followed by Language Switch (LS) for 15.3 % (9) and Topic Avoidance (TA) for 14.6 % (8), Literal Translation (LT) for 6.8 % (4), Mime (M) for 8.5 % (5), Word Coinage (WC) and Mes- sage Abandonment (MA) for 6.8 % (4), Appeal for Assistance (AA) for 5.6 % (3), and Approximation (A) for 3.39 % (2). The last find- ing showed that there were two main factors that cause the choice of the strategies in the conversations. They were proficiency of the speaker and features of the communicative situation.

In the use of communication strategies, both students of Eng- lish Department Muria Kudus University and the native speaker try to have a relative balance of power relation without the domination of one person to others. Some factors which cause the use of the strategies are lack of meaning, social use aspect, speech, voice, and fluency.

To improve students’ strategies in communication, they should practice their English more, so their speaking and their strategies will be improved. Besides, lecturers also should apply the contextual teaching in which the environment and culture are inserted into the topic.

Abstract Communication is a process of sharing information through speech, writing, gestures or symbols between two or more people. The focus of the present paper is oral communication and the language under consideration is English. The teacher should adopt a student centered approach. The learners should be encouraged to do things in the class which result in developing their communication skills. The trainer has to focus on both the linguistic and paralinguistic features of the communication process while enhancing learners’ communication skills. These features involve the effective use of words, forming grammatically intelligible sentences and an appropriate use of voice and intonation. The teacher should encourage and train his students to use positive body language while listening and speaking. In order to hone the communication skills of the learners, it is very important to make the learners comfortable with the language they have to communicate in. Shedding their inhibitions is also one of the pivotal areas of concerns. This paper explores different techniques that could be useful while training students in communication skills. Communication is a process of sharing information through speech, writing, gestures or symbols between two or more people. The focus of the present paper is oral communication and the language under consideration is English. The major elements of a communication process are sender, receiver, message and feedback. Effective communication is a two way process. It involves both expressive (speaking) skills and receptive (listening) skills. It entails receiver’s understanding of the message sent by the sender and his feedback to the sender. Listening plays a very important role in the language learning process. It is the most primary of the four basic skills of any language i.e. Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Listening paves way for speaking. One can never be a good speaker if one is not a good listener. An effective communicator is first a good listener and then a good speaker. According to Tickoo ( 2003 ), ‘Good listening skills not only lay the foundations of good speech, but they grow best through effective communication’.
