ABSTRACT Background: Pomegranates contain chemical saponins and flavonoids while lemongrass stems have flavonoid chemical compounds. Substances that can inhibit the linking of bacteria are saponins and flavonoids. The most common microorganism found in ulcus diabetikum (ulcer diabetes) is Staphylococcus aureus. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of a combination of pomegranate ethanol extract and ethanol extract of lemongrass stems against S. aureus bacteria. Methods: This study used an experimental design with a complete randomized design study divided into 5 groups: groups 1 (75:25), 2 (50:50), 3 (25:75), positive control (tetracycline) and negative control. Manufacture of pomegranate peel extract and lemongrass stems was done by maceration method for further rotary, after the extract was obtained tested for antibacterial activity by diffusion method using a cylinder. With the test used analysis of variance one way. Results: The results of this study showed that the combination of pomegranate ethanol extract and citronella stem ethanol extract showed activity against S. aureus with a ratio of 15 ul:5 ul, 15 ul:15 ul, 5 ul:15 ul with inhibitory diameter of  respectively 13 mm, 11 mm, 8 mm. Whereas for positive control with chloramphenicol, the inhibition area is 9 mm.Conclusions: Statistically the combination of pomegranate ethanol extract and lemongrass stems has antibacterial power which uses p=0.005 and p<0.05. The combination of pomegranate ethanol extract and lemongrass stems has very strong antibacterial activity against S. aureus due to inhibition zones of 10-20 mm.

Soursop (Annona muricata L.) has been used for generations by some communities in Indonesia to treat diseases. Soursop leaves are used as an alternative treatment for cancer, by boiling them in the water and consuming it. In addition to the treatment of cancer, soursop plant is also used for the treatment of skin diseases such as boils. This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of soursop leaves of young and old against Staphylococcus aureus, determine the content of secondary metabolites, and find out the diameter of inhibitory young leaves and old leaves of soursop in inhibiting Staphylococcus aureus. Soursop leaves were extracted by maceration using ethanol 96%. The extract obtained was then carried out to phytochemical screening. Antibacterial activity test was conducted using disc the Kirby-Bauerdiffusion. This study used 6 concentrations of 500 mg/mL, 400 mg/mL, 300 mg/mL, 200 mg/mL, 100 mg/mL, 80 mg/mL, 60 mg/mL, 40 mg/mL, 20 mg/mL, 10 mg/mL and 1 mg/mL. A positive control used soursop leaf extract of young and old while a negative one used DMSO 10%. Based on phytochemical screening, ethanol extract of soursop leaves contained alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, steroids/triterpenoids and glycosides. The antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of leaves of young soursop was higher in inhibitory diameter than the ethanol extract of old soursop leaves. It could be seen that a concentration of 500 mg/mL was equal to 10.87 mm and 8.68 mm; a concentration of 400 mg/mL was equal to 9.15 mm and 7.3 mm; a concentration of 300 mg/mL was equal to 8.34 mm and 6.30 mm; a concentration of 200 mg/mL was equal to 8.23 mm and 7.08 mm; a concentration of 100 mg/mL was equal to 6.32 mm and 6.18 mm, and a concentration of 80 mg/mL did not leave a diameter inhibitory to bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. Young soursop leaf ethanol extract was more effective than the old soursop one against Staphylococcus aureus.

Bacteria of the genus Thermoactinomyces have the ability to produce antibacterial bioactive compounds. This bioactive compound can be used for combating diarrheal agents such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of the metabolite extract from Thermoactinomyces sp. (H24) against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Methanol was used as a solvent for the extraction of bacterial bioactive compounds. Antibacterial activity was analyzed by the diffusion method with several extract concentrations (0.75 mL, 1.5 mL, 2.25 mL, and 3 mL), 10% DMSO as the negative control, and ciprofloxacin as the positive control. Our result shows that Termoactinomyces sp. (H24) extract has an inhibitory effect on the growth of  E. coli and S. aureus with an effective concentration of 2.25 mL (inhibition strength: very strong).

The aims of this research are to determine the secondary metabolite content found in the ethanol extract of kweni mango bark (Mangifera odorata Griff) and analyze its potency as a natural antibacterial against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The research was started by maceration process using 96% ethanol solvent, then evaporated at 40-50oC and obtain yield of 20,61% with powder content of 8,34%. Furthermore, phytochemical screening was performed qualitatively to determine the secondary metabolite of the extract. The results showed that ethanol extract of M. odorata Griff bark contained secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, terpenoids and phenolics. In this study antibacterial activity was carried out using disc diffusion method in Plate Count Agar media and incubated for 24-48 hours. The results showed that the largest diameter of inhibitory zones formed at a concentration of 15 mg/ml for S. aureus was 12,33 mm with strong classified and for E. coli bacteria with a concentration of 200 mg/ml of 23,67 mm with very strong classified, and almost equal with the result shown by 30 µg tetracycline as positive control, which is 25 mm. The results of this study it can be concluded that the ethanol extract of the kweni mango bark (M. odorata Griff) is bacteriostatic. Keywords: antibacterial activity, Mangifera odorata Griff, phytochemical screening, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus.

Erythrina fusca Lour. (family Fabaceae) is a flowering tree that is locally known as ‘chengkering’. The plant is traditionally used in treatment of some symptoms related to bacterial infections such as wound infections, inflammations, and skin itching. This work reports for the first time in vitro antibacterial screening of the E. fusca Lour. methanolic leaf extract against some common Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria such as Klebsiella pneumonia, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus. The in vitro antibacterial assay was carried out using agar   diffusion method with the extract concentration of 3 mg/well and vancomycin 30 µg/well as the positive control. It was found that the extract exhibits antibacterial effects in range of 10.5 – 14 mm of zone of inhibition (ZOI) against all tested bacteria except for K. pneumoniae. P. aeruginosa showing ZOI of 14 mm was the most sensitive bacterium while P. vulgaris (ZOI of 10.5 mm) was the least sensitive strain to the extract. Based on the preliminary phytochemical screening of using standard qualitative phytochemical tests, this species contains significant amount of alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, and tannins, which might contribute to the antibacterial activity of the extract. Both antibacterial potential and presence of various phytochemicals in the extract could support the traditional uses of E. fusca  , and the obtained results would serve as a basis for further exploration of antibacterial properties of the plant’s leaves.
