Gender role attitudes and their psychological effects on Chinese youth

Questions from the World Values Survey were administered to 404 undergraduates at a Chinese university to explore the relationships among rural and urban experience, gender role attitudes, and psychological well-being. Results showed that female students were more gender egalitarian than were male students. Female students with traditional gender role attitudes were more likely to be from rural than urban areas, display lower subjective health, and report lower life satisfaction. Male students with traditional gender role attitudes scored higher on life satisfaction than did traditional females. The results imply that exposure to urban living experiences leads to more egalitarian gender role attitudes, and that this attitude is accompanied by better psychological well-being for females. Limitations of the findings are discussed.

The article considers the cognitive predictors of the assessment of quality and satisfaction with life in students at military higher education institutions, including their perception of the number of everyday stressors and their cognitive distortions. The average values for indicators of life satisfaction, everyday stressors and cognitive distortions of the said students are given in comparison with the average values of the corresponding empirical norms obtained by Russian researchers on samples of Russian-speaking men. Regression models constructed allow meaningful interpretation of cognitive predictors, to which various indicators of students' life satisfaction and overall well-being are most sensitive – everyday stressors in various areas of life and some cognitive distortions, including catastrophisation, telepathy, and super-generalisation.

The research was conducted to study the differences between male and female Secondary school students on the aspects of emotional intelligence, psychological Well-being and experienced bullying from boarding schools. The sample was collected from two boarding schools. The sample size was 84, with 47 male students and 37 female students .The students selected had studied in the particular school for a minimum period of three years. The tools selected for data collection were Emotional Intelligence Test by Ekta Sharma, Psychological well-being index by Harold Dupuy and Multidimensional peer victimization scale by Stephen Joseph. The scores for central tendency were obtained by calculating mean, SD, skewness and kurtosis. The scores were not normally distributed. No significant gender differences were observed. Emotional intelligence was found to be positively correlated with psychological well-being and Experienced Bullying was found to be negatively correlated with well-being.

On the premise that social relationships among elderly adults differ in terms of the most significant, dominant figure, this study aimed to examine: (1) whether there were qualitative differences in supportive functions between family-dominant and friend-dominant affective relationships, and (2) whether “lone wolves”, who were deficient in human resources, had difficulties in maintaining their well-being. A total of 148 Japanese, over the age of 65, both living in communities and in institutions were individually interviewed about their social relationships using a self-report type method, the Picture Affective Relationships test, and their well-being was assessed using Depression, Self-esteem, Life satisfaction, and Subjective health scales. Results showed that there were no differences in psychological well-being between family-dominant and friend-dominant participants, but those who lacked affective figures had lower scores in subjective well-being than did their family-dominant and friend-dominant counterparts. The generalisation of these findings to other cultures is discussed.

Purpose This paper aims to advance the design-thinking approach in food from an engineering mind-set toward a positive psychology perspective by investigating how consumer experiences evoked by food-related activities can facilitate, stimulate and enhance individuals’ happiness and perceptions of life satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach A diary field experiment was conducted. Participants from a major European city were asked to reflect on their food-related activities, provide descriptions and answer questions on experiential stimulation derived from these activities in relation to happiness and perceived life satisfaction. Findings Food-related activities generally result in positive consumer experiences and psychological well-being. Experiential stimulation resulting from food activities is positively related to perceived life satisfaction directly and indirectly via pleasure and meaning. Although the authors found an overall positive relationship between these constructs, they also found differences based on the experience type considered. A “crescendo model” of experiences that details how experiences lead to happiness and perceived life satisfaction is presented. Research limitations/implications This study is largely exploratory. Future research should adopt an experimental approach and further test the relationship between experiential stimulation, happiness and perceived life satisfaction in the context of food. Practical implications The paper offers innovation teams in food companies a practical “crescendo model” that can be used to design product–consumer interactions. Originality/value The research bridges literatures on design thinking, psychological well-being and consumer experiences. By studying the relationship between experiences, happiness and perceived life satisfaction in the context of food, the findings contribute to research on food well-being by expanding the notion of happiness seen only as pleasure. The research also contributes to work on design thinking by offering an experiential framework that contributes to the notion of consumer empathy.
