The effects of different temperatures (23?C and 8?C) on activity of corpora allata (CA) and dorsolateral (L1, L2) protocerebral neurosecretory neurons were investigated in Morimus funereus Mulsant (1863) larvae collected from a natural population during March. Activity of CA was revealed by monitoring of CA volume and cell number. Increase of CA volume after two day exposure to both temperatures was shown to be the result of increase in cell number. Activity of CA was higher at 23?C than 8?C. Activity of L1 and L2 neurosecretory neurons was inhibited at both temperatures. Neurosecretory neurons were more sensitive to temperature of 23?C than 8?C. It can be supposed that dorsolateral neurosecretory neurons synthesize neurohormones that affect CA activity, depending on environmental temperature.

1. Myofibrillar adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activities were measured for white myotomal muscle of 19 species of fish. 2. The activity was measured at different temperatures and after periods of preincubation at 37°C. 3. The inactivation half-life at 37°C depended on environmental temperature, increasing as the temperature increased. 4. Cold-water fish had higher myofibrillar adenosine triphosphatase activity at low temperatures than had warm-water fish. 5. The significance of these results is discussed.

The effects of constant temperature and an extremely low-frequency magnetic field (ELFMF, 50 Hz and average induction of 20 mT) on the activity of medial protocerebral neurosecretory neurons (A1 and A2) and corpora allata were investigated in Cerambyx cerdo L. larvae after 30 days of exposure. Both constant temperature of 23?C and the ELFMF led to decrease in activity of A1 and A2 neurosecretory neurons and increase in activity of corpora allata compared to the control group (larvae from natural conditions). The changes are more pronounced in A2 than A1 neurons.

ABSTRACTBioactive glasses (6P55) used for coating Ti/Ti-alloy were tested for their in vitro behavior in a comparative study with commercial Bioglass™ (45S5) and commercial Ti alloy (Ti6Al4V). In vitro testing included pH and dissolution rate determination in simulated body fluid (SBF) along with in vitro cyto compatibility testing. It was seen in this work that 6P55 and 45S5 had similar dissolution behavior, demonstrating t½ dependence and maximum pH of approximately 8.1 after 10 days of immersion. This pH was reduce by 0.2 0.4 pH units when the in vitro V:A ratio was increased from 1 to 3. The dissolution rate of these glasses approached 0 after additional immersion tests after 15 days and the pH stablilized at less than 7.5. Cell culture studies showed that both glasses behaved in similar fashion after 16 hours in culture. Both glasses had an increase in cell numbers of close to 200-250%, whereas Ti6Al4V had a less pronounced cell number increase (∼ 180%)

Adult rats of various strains became obese when they were fed a highly palatable diet for several months. Analysis of their adipose tissue morphology revealed increases in both adipocyte size and number in most depots. Reintroduction of an ordinary chow diet to such animals precipitated a period of weight loss during which only mean adipocyte size returned to normal. Adipocyte number remained at the elevated level achieved during the period of weight gain. Thus, transient dietary obesity in rats results in a persistent obesity of a purely hyperplastic, nonhypertrophic form. Furthermore, the persistence of the cell number increase suggests that it is the result of proliferation or differentiation rather than of only an increase in the lipid content of a pool of very small and normally undetected adipocytes. An analysis of adipose tissue morphology changes during the course of diet-induced weight gain suggests that the achievement of some specific mean adipocyte size triggers the events that culminate in adipocyte number increase. What mechanisms may link adipocyte size to the formation of new adipocytes remains unknown.

The corpora allata (CA) of mated female Diploptera punctata showed an increase in cell number from 6000 cells/CA on the day of emergence to a maximum of about 9000 cells/CA by day 5. The number of cells per CA then declined and, by day 8, the CA was composed of about 6000 cells. In the normal mated animal, the previously established increase in biosynthetic activity of the CA correlated with the increase in number of cells in the CA. In virgin females no significant change in cell number was observed during this period and this correlates with the demonstrated low and constant rates of juvenile hormone (JH) biosynthesis. Following ovariectomy, however, an increase in cell number occurred (to 10 000 cells/CA) by day 5 and cell number remained elevated until at least day 8. Low rates of JH biosynthesis have been observed previously in ovariectomized females and thus the increase in cell number observed in these females is not accompanied by a corresponding increase in biosynthetic activity. The cell number of the CA in ovariectomized females was reduced by injection of 20-hydroxyecdysone. We propose that either mating or surgical removal of inhibitory signals from cerebral neurosecretory cells permits the proliferation of the cells of the CA. We also propose that factors from the ovary are responsible for both the initiation of the cycle of JH biosynthesis and the reduction of CA cell number at the end of the gonotrophic cycle.

For the effect of environmental temperature on the rubber material stress-strain relationships, rubber tensile specimens, compression specimens and shear specimens were made. Through the electronic universal testing machine Instron 5500R, the stress-strain curves of three kinds of specimens at different temperatures were obtained. The test results showed that the stress-strain relationship of rubber material was typically nonlinear. As the temperature increased, the elastic modulus of rubber material decreased.

Simira gardneriana M.R. Barbosa & Peixoto (Rubiaceae) is a species exclusive to the Caatinga biome. It is used as forage, firewood, and in the construction of fence posts. Species from this biome are constantly subjected to abiotic stresses, including salt and thermal stress. Thus, we evaluated the effect of irrigation water salinity on the germination and initial development of S. gardneriana seedlings at different temperatures. The experiment used seeds with an initial moisture content of about 12.32%, arranged in a factorial scheme with eight levels of salinity, obtained by the addition of sodium chloride (NaCl), diluted in distilled water at concentrations of 0.0 (control), 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5, 5.5, 6.5, and 7.5 dS m-1, and the four temperatures 25, 30, 35, and 20-30°C, in four replicates of 25 seeds each. Salinity and temperature effects were evaluated based on germination, germination speed index, seedling shoot length, root length, shoot dry matter, root dry matter, and total dry matter. Increasing water salinity levels interfered with all variables analyzed in the germination of S. gardneriana seeds, especially at a temperature of 35°C. At temperatures of 25 and 30°C, seed germination and initial development were less affected by salinity. Simira gardneriana seeds are sensitive to salinity caused by the increase in NaCl from 1.5 dS m-1, which indicates a low tolerance of this species to saline environments. Our results show that the negative effect on the germination and initial development of S. gardneriana seedlings can be explained by the increase in salt levels and temperature, reducing their capacity to absorb water and nutrients, which indicates sensitivity responses of this species to salinity and thermal stress.
