In this paper, the impacts of some meteorological parameters on the SO2 concentrations in the City of Obrenovac are presented. The City of Obrenovac is located in the north-west part of Serbia on the banks of the River Sava. The observed source emission, the power plants TENT A and TENT B are situated on the bank of the Sava River in the vicinity of Obrenovac. During the period from January to November 2006, the concentrations of sulfur dioxide in the air at 4 monitoring sites in Obrenovac were measured. It was noticed that the maximal measured daily concentrations of sulfur dioxide ranged from 1 ?g/m3 (16th November, 2006) to 98 ?g/m3 (29th January 2006) and lie under the maximal allowed concentration value according to the Serbian Law on Environmental Protection. The measured sulfur dioxide concentrations mostly showed characteristics usual for a daily acidification sulfur dioxide cycle, excluding the specificities influenced by the measuring site itself. Sulfur dioxide transport was recorded at increased wind speeds, primarily from the southeast direction. Based on the impact of meteorological parameters on the sulfur dioxide concentration, a validation of the monitoring sites was also performed from the aspect of their representivity.

During the period between June and December 2002, the concentrations of ozone in the air at 4 measuring sites in Belgrade were measured. The measuring periods varied from 10 days to several weeks. The maximal measured daily concentrations of ozone ranged from 19ppbv (23 December 2002) to 118ppbv (23 June 2002).Ozone concentrations higher than, or equal to 90ppbv were registered at three measuring sites. It was shown that at measuring sites characterized as urban, maximal O3 concentrations equal to, or higher than 90ppbv occurred at high temperatures (higher than 30?C) and low wind speeds (mostly from the north). The measured ozone concentrations mostly showed characteristics usual for a daily photochemical ozone cycle, excluding the specificities influenced by the measuring site itself. Ozone transport was recorded at increased wind speeds, primarily from south-easterly directions. On the basis of he correlations between ozone concentration and the corresponding meteorological parameters, a validation of the measuring sites was performed from the aspect of their representativeness for the measurements.

AbstractCities develop around industry, markets and transport links. Dublin in the nineteenth century was similar, but additionally the north-west of the city developed around the expansion of a complex of institutional buildings for the reception, confinement and welfare of the poor and sick. This article argues that these institutions were implicit in the development of the modern city in the same way as industry and commerce. The physical development of the buildings altered and defined both the streetscape and, over time, the social identities and historical communities in the locale, in the same way that industrial development defined urban areas.

Early in 2013 as many as 5 wind farms were in operation in Kretinga region and the sixth was under construction. The wind farms are concentrated within two territories, i.e. in the south-west part of the region (between Kretinga and Palanga towns) and in the north-west (between Darbėnai and the Senoji Įpiltis villages). The region also houses seven individual wind turbines, the total number being 58 units. In seeking to assess the impact of wind turbines based in Kretinga region on the landscape and the villages, the analysis of cartography material was carried out and the inventory of all wind turbines was made (GIS data base). On assessing the importance of the roads with regard to the intensity of traffic and tourist flows, the observation places were established and photo fixation was performed. The impact was assessed from eleven observation places (all the places were close to the roads). During the study, the nature, importance and degree of contrast of the visual impact of wind turbines were assessed. In assessing the visual impact of wind turbines on the landscape, it was found that woodlands and villages make a significant impact on the visibility of turbines. The wind turbines seen on the axis of the road perspective are not only observed for some length of time, but often serve as a landmark. The investigation results were compared with the situation in western Latvia region (Grobina case).

Abstract Combined heat and power plants (CHPP) are an important component of the energy balance in many countries. However, of all types of power plants, CHPPs have the largest impact on the environment. In recent years, the urban ecology has become one of the key indicators that determine the quality of life of city residents. The article evaluates the impact of the CHPPs in Ulan-Ude on the example of CHPP-1. The main sources of environmental pollution, and, accordingly, the zone of exposure of CHPP-1’ pollutants have been identified. Virtually the entire territory of the city of Ulan-Ude falls under this zone, but since northwestern winds prevail in this area, the north-western part of the city is most affected. Based on the results of a detailed dispersion calculation, we defined the following substances which should be monitored: nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, mineral oil, and inorganic dust (70-20% SiO2 and coal dust). The concentration of these substances in the air is significant.

Many things are said and written about famous ophthalmologist Albrecht von Graefe. This work gives detailed description of the places where he lived and practiced ophthalmology in Berlin, because very little was written about it and never in one paper. Von Graefe was born in 1828 in villa Finkenherd in the north-west part of Tiergarten in Berlin. He lived in Behrenstrasse, one of the fashionable streets in Berlin, where he began his ophthalmological practice in 1850. Later, in 1852 he founded a famous private eye clinic in Karlstrasse 46 where he treated numerous eye patients and educated many prominent ophthalmologists and surgeons. Several times he had changed his residence addresses. Among other places, he also stayed in Unter den Linden Avenue and Bellevuestrasse near Potsdamer Platz. In 1868 he became the head of the eye clinic in the Charité Hospital. Since then he lived in a spacious house on Viktoriastrasse until his death in 1870. Although Albrecht von Graefe lived only 42 years, he travelled a lot, but most of his life he spent in the city of Berlin. Graefe made many contributions to ophthalmology being considered the “father of glaucoma” and the nestor of modern ophthalmology.

Prediction of severe natural hazards requires accurate forecasting systems. Recently, there has been a tendency towards more integrated solutions, where different components of the Earth system are coupled to explicitly represent the physical feedbacks between them. This study focuses on rapidly developing waves under extratropical storms to understand the impact of different wave source term parameterisations in the WAVEWATCH III (WWIII) model (ST4 and ST6) and coupling strategies (surface roughness closure versus surface stress closure) on the accuracy of the Met Office regional atmosphere-ocean-wave coupled research system for the north-west (NW) European shelf (UKC4). Results of a study focused on simulations during winter 2013/14 demonstrate that ST6 allows for a faster wave growth than the ST4 parameterisation but might degrade low to mid energy wave states. The difference between ST6 and ST4 in wave growth is larger for higher wind speeds and short fetches. The experiment with ST4 and roughness closure consistently under-predicts the wave growth in those locations where fetch dependence is an important factor (i.e., seas at the East (E) of Ireland and the UK for storms coming from the NW-WNW). The implementation in the wave model of ST6 physics with the stress closure coupling strategy appears to improve growth of young wind-seas, reducing bias in those locations where the storms are underestimated. The slower wave growth when using surface roughness closure seems to be related to an underestimation of the momentum transfer computed by the wave model when coupling the wind speeds. For very young to young wind seas, this can be overcome when the surface stress is computed by the atmospheric model and directly passed to the ocean.

The influence of a deep river valley system on the distribution of dispersing Aedes mosquitos was studied during 1958–59 in the vicinity of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Mosquito breeding within an area extending two to three miles beyond the city limits was prevented by anti-larval measures, and almost the only remaining breeding places were situated on the plains several miles to the north-west and south-east, yet considerable numbers of mosquitos appeared every spring in that part of the city included in the valley-ravine system of the North Saskatchewan River. Previous work had suggested that mosquitos dispersing across the plains were collected by the valley-ravine system and entered the city by passing down the main valley. The present paper attempts to account for this directed dispersal in terms of the behaviour of Aedes mosquitos in response to certain physical factors in the environment. The species mainly concerned were Aedes cataphylla Dyar, A. fitchii (Felt & Young), A. excrucians (Wlk.) and A. stimulans (Wlk.).The initiation of dispersal flight downwind across the plains at twilight was observed. This took place soon after emergence and was not prevented by moderate winds. It was shown experimentally that neither high wind speeds nor turbulence inhibited the flight of newly emerged Aedes mosquitos, but that individuals several days old were reluctant to take flight in turbulent conditions. Since wind speeds on the plains were generally higher than those in the valleys, these reactions would tend to confine older mosquitos to the valleys while not preventing dispersal of newly emerged mosquitos across the plains.The direction of the initial dispersal flights from the breeding places was observed in mosquitos escaping from rearing cages. Take-off was characteristically into the wind, but re-orientation downwind took place when the mosquitos began to be blown backwards in flight. It was shown experimentally, by releasing mosquitos in the field when the wind was very light, that the preferred direction of flight uninfluenced by wind was towards the lowest part of the horizon, both on the plains and in the valley. This response would tend to cause mosquitos on the plain to fly into ravines and valleys, and thence down-stream within them. Dispersing mosquitos would thus tend to be held by any valleys or ravines in their path.Swarming was never observed near the pools from which the mosquitos emerged, but was mainly seen in the valley or on the edge of the valley and ravines. Swarming of A. cataphylla took place during the evenings after the initial dispersal. The swarms were predominantly male but mating occurred during swarming. A cohesive factor seemed to be involved in the behaviour of the swarms, and further dispersal also seemed to occur gregariously; the movement of large male swarms down the river valley was observed.By the application of optomotor theories of insect flight to previously published data on the flight speed and behaviour of A. aegypti (L.) and A. punctor (Kby.), the relationships between wind speed and permissible heights of flight of these species upwind and downwind were calculated. These relationships were consistent with the observations on dispersal of Aedes mosquitos in the Edmonton area, and could largely explain the mechanism by means of which deep valleys attracted and held dispersing mosquitos.In contrast to the open plains, the wooded river valley provides a more favourable environment for adult mosquitos. The supply of nectar is greater, saturation deficiency and wind speeds are lower and less variable, and shaded resting sites are more abundant.Observations on mosquitos in chambers with either vertical or horizontal humidity gradients suggested that the behaviour of Aedes mosquitos is not greatly influenced by humidity.

The article presents annual statistical data of the Caspian Research Institute of Fishery. There has been kept track of the long term dynamics of the stocks of three species of Caspian sprat (anchovy, big-eyed kilka, sprat) and investigated a process of substituting a food item of sprats Eurytemora grimmi to a small-celled copepod species Acartia tonsa Dana. According to the research results, there has been determined growth potential of stocks of each species. Ctenophoran-Mnemiopsis has an adverse effect on sprat population by eating fish eggs and larvae. Ctenophoram - Mnemiopsis is a nutritional competitor to the full-grown fishes. The article gives recommendations on reclamation of stocks of the most perspective species - common sprat, whose biological characteristics helped not to suffer during Ctenophoram outburst and to increase its population during change of the main food item. Hydroacoustic survey data prove the intensive growth of common sprat biomass in the north-west part of the Middle Caspian. According to the results of the research it may be concluded that to realize the volumes of recommended sprat catch it is necessary to organize the marine fishery of common sprat at the Russian Middle Caspian shelf.

Abstract. Tropical cyclones play an important role in modifying the tropopause structure and dynamics as well as stratosphere-troposphere exchange (STE) process in the Upper Troposphere and Lower Stratosphere (UTLS) region. In the present study, the impact of cyclones that occurred over the North Indian Ocean during 2007–2013 on the STE process is quantified using satellite observations. Tropopause characteristics during cyclones are obtained from the Global Positioning System (GPS) Radio Occultation (RO) measurements and ozone and water vapor concentrations in UTLS region are obtained from Aura-Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) satellite observations. The effect of cyclones on the tropopause parameters is observed to be more prominent within 500 km from the centre of cyclone. In our earlier study we have observed decrease (increase) in the tropopause altitude (temperature) up to 0.6 km (3 K) and the convective outflow level increased up to 2 km. This change leads to a total increase in the tropical tropopause layer (TTL) thickness of 3 km within the 500 km from the centre of cyclone. Interestingly, an enhancement in the ozone mixing ratio in the upper troposphere is clearly noticed within 500 km from cyclone centre whereas the enhancement in the water vapor in the lower stratosphere is more significant on south-east side extending from 500–1000 km away from the cyclone centre. We estimated the cross-tropopause mass flux for different intensities of cyclones and found that the mean flux from stratosphere to troposphere for cyclonic stroms is 0.05 ± 0.29 × 10−3 kg m−2 and for very severe cyclonic stroms it is 0.5 ± 1.07 × 10−3 kg m−2. More downward flux is noticed in the north-west and south-west side of the cyclone centre. These results indicate that the cyclones have significant impact in effecting the tropopause structure, ozone and water vapour budget and consequentially the STE in the UTLS region.
