The purpose of this study was fourfold: (a) to measure possible changes in gender association of musical instruments from earlier research, (b) to estimate current preferences of fourth-grade students for selected instruments, (c) to gain an understanding of reasons expressed by students for preferring certain instruments and not others, and (d) to compare students' perceptions of their peers' preferences to the actual choices their peers made. Findings indicate the magnitude of gender associations has lessened; however, such associations are still noticeably present. Instrument positions on the masculine-feminine continuum remain relatively stable. The majority of the fourth-grade subjects preferred drums, saxophone, or flute, followed in descending order by clarinet, trumpet, violin, trombone, and cello. “Quality of sound” was a primary reason cited for wanting to play an instrument; “too difficult to play” was a primary reason for not wanting to play an instrument. Children's perceptions of their peers' preferences bore a moderate relationship to what their peers actually chose, with girls more accurate in predicting preferences of boys than vice versa.

The purpose of this study was to examine young children’s perceptions about the quality of their interactions with their teachers and the possible association of teacher–child relationships with children’s school engagement. Additionally, gender and ethnicity differences were investigated regarding both teachers’ and children’s perceptions. Young Children’s Appraisals of Teacher Support and Teacher-Rated Effortful Engagement were used to evaluate children’s perceptions about their teacher–child relationships and teacher’s assessments about children’s school engagement. In all, 232 preschool children and 39 kindergarten teachers from northern Greece participated in the study. Findings provided interesting information about the profile of teacher–child interactions based on children’s perspectives and about the association between the quality of teacher–child interactions and children’s school engagement. More specifically, findings showed that children mostly describe positive interactions with their teachers and that the quality of teacher–child relationship is associated with children’s school engagement.

Teachers' and children's perceptions of social dominance in fourth-grade classes were examined. 3 female teachers' rankings of “toughness” and “getting one's own way” among the 32 boys and 20 girls in Grade 4 were compared to hierarchies based on class consensus. Results indicated that only 1 of the 3 teachers showed significant agreement with her student's rankings, defined the terms like the children, and generated overlapping hierarchies as the children did. All 3 teachers and the children ranked boys higher than girls on toughness, but teachers' patterns diverged on the “own way” term The inconsistencies between teachers' and children's perceptions suggest that the basis for their rankings should be studied.

The aim of this paper is to examine secondary education learners’ performance in L2 writing production using the complexity, accuracy, and fluency constructs. Results show that the measures of fluency, accuracy, grammatical and lexical complexity progress in a significant way: fourth grade students outperform first graders in the aforementioned measures. Secondly, fewer correlations between the writing measures used and the general quality of the compositions are found among the older students than among the younger ones, indicating that the correlations change depending on learners’ age. Thirdly, 1st year students exhibit a higher ratio of errors, both in general and also by error category, although only two types decrease significantly in 4th year students: syntactic and spelling errors. Lastly, we find that errors tend to develop in a non-linear way.

The main objective of this research was to develop and validate the quality of an assessment tool for evaluating the mathematical reading, analytical thinking, and mathematical writing skills of fourth-grade students. We randomly selected 222 fourth grade students across multiple schools of varying sizes to take the assessment. Multidimensional Random Coefficients Multinomial Item Response Model was applied to validate the quality of the developed assessment tool. A design-based research methodology was adopted to develop the assessment tool encompassing four phases as follows: 1) analyze how students solve mathematical problems; 2) develop the assessment tool; 3) validation of the tool; and 4) reflection. The results of this research indicate that the assessment tool consisting of 19 items and two dimensions is a reliable and valid metric to measure mathematical reading, mathematical writing and analytical ability of fourth graders. The Likelihood-Ratio test showed that the multidimensional model fits better in comparison to the unidimensional model. It can be concluded that each item is qualified to assess the students and relevant to the developed dimensional examination structure.

Students’ explanations of their mathematical thinking and conclusions have become a greater part of the assessment landscape in recent years. With a sample of 71 fourth-grade students at risk for mathematics learning disabilities, we investigated the relation between student accuracy in comparing the magnitude of fractions and the quality of students’ explanations of those comparisons, as well as the relation between those measures and scores on a criterion test: released fraction items from the National Assessment of Educational Progress. We also considered the extent to which reasoning and language contribute to the prediction. Results indicated a significant moderate correlation between accuracy and explanation quality. Commonality analyses indicated that explanation quality accounts for little variance in National Assessment of Educational Progress scores beyond what is accounted for by traditional measures of magnitude understanding. Implications for instruction and assessment are discussed.
