Objective: To determine the level of hearing handicap and its age and gender association in older adults. Study Design: Cross sectional analytical study. Place and Duration of Study: Study conducted at Ear, Nose & Throat outpatients of Yusra General Hospital, National Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine Islamabad and Cantonment General Hospital Rawalpindi, from Jul to Sep 2017. Methodology: We recruited two hundred cases of self-reported hearing difficulty, using non-probability consecutive sampling, who fulfilled inclusion criteria. After recording demographic details including history, subjects were screened by the Screening Version of Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly (HHIE-S). Followed by otoscopy and pure tone audiometry. Analysis was done using SPSS-24. Results: Study revealed 133 (65.5%) males and 67 (33.5%) females with mean age of 65.45 ± 7.50 years. Out of 179 (89.5%) had significantly high level of hearing handicap with HHIE-S score >43, while 21 (10.5%) revealed mild to moderate handicap with score of 17-42. Hearing handicap was significantly associated with aging (p<0.001), while no significant gender association was noted. Hearing loss was mainly of sensory-neural type 192 (96%). Conclusion: In older adults with self-reported hearing loss, high level of hearing handicap was present in majority (89.5%) and mild to moderate in 10.5%, with significant association with aging and hearing loss was predominantly sensory- neural type.

Objectives: This study aims to determine the association of ambulatory and social performance status of transfemoral prosthetic users with their age, gender, and marital status. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 400 transfemoral prosthesis users. A sample was recruited from both genders aged 10-60 years using the prosthesis for at least one year. They were selected using the non-probability convenience sampling method from the Pakistan Institute of Prosthetic and Orthotic Sciences from July 2019 to December 2019. Lower extremity functional scale and short form-36 health survey questionnaire (SF-36) were used for data collection, followed by statistical analysis. Results: Ambulatory status (as measured by the total lower extremity functional scale) revealed significant association (P<0.001) with age. The highest score belonged to the 10-30 years age group. Also, there was a significant association (P=0.003) with marital status with the highest scores for unmarried ones. However, no significant (P=0.705) gender association was noted though scores were higher for the male gender. As regards, the social performance was measured by SF-36. The findings revealed a significant association (P<0.05) of most domains of SF-36 with age groups, with the highest scores for the age group of 10-30 years. Also, a significant association with the gender with higher scores in females was noted in most domains. In contrast, no significant association with marital status was reported in most domains. Discussion: Ambulatory status has a significant association with age and marital status with no significant gender association. While social performance has a significant association with gender, most domains had significant associations with age groups. However, no association with marital status was present.

ABSTRACT AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To study the distribution and frequencies of ABO and Rhesus (Rh) blood groups among confirmed cases of Covid19 infection .We also studied the relation between ABO blood group system and lymphopenia and studied the gender association in COVID19 patients. METHODES A hospital based retrospective study was conducted at Government Medical College Suryapet from1-8-2020 to 30-9-2020. A total of 200 Covid cases were included in the study who came to the hospital with the complaints of Fever, sore throat, body pains, cough, breathlessness, diarrhoea. Patients confirmed Covid infection were tested for blood grouping and RH typing by using forward blood grouping with the help of commercially available standared monoclonal antisera. CBP was processed in sysmax 5 part Haemotology analyzer. Blood group frequency was tested also assed the gender association , covid patients presents with lymphopenia the relation between the ABO blood group and lymphocyte count was determined. RESULTS: Males were more compared to the females .Middle aged group male patients were more commonly involved. Most predominant blood group was group B 79(39.5%), group O 78(39%),group A 37(18.5%), group AB 6(3%),most of them were 190 (95%)Rh positive, only 10 Rh negative (5%).To assess the Lymphopenia in our study we divided the absolute lymphocyte count into 5 groups. Group 1 cases are more 58 (29%), Group 2 91(45.5%), Group 3 30 (15%), Group 4 16(8%), Group 5 5(2.5%). CONCLUSION: Male patients with blood group B were more compared to other blood groups however more number of studies are necessary to confirm these findings in a larger sample and among individuals of different ethnicities. Records of referred cat cases received for diagnosis in the Department of Pathology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry between 2006 and 2018, were reviewed to examine frequency of occurrence of neoplasms and associated demographic factors. To this end, the records of biopsies, necropsies and clinical information were analyzed to obtain data on animal sex and age, as well as neoplasm histotype, tissue of origin, and malignant/benign biological behavior. A total of 685 neoplasm cases were diagnosed during the study period, which represented 37.7% of all referred histopathological domestic cat cases. Epithelial neoplasms were the most prevalent (56% of cases), followed by mesenchymal tumors (27%), and hematopoietic and lymphoreticular neoplasms (17%). The most common tumor type was carcinoma (31%), followed by sarcoma (14%), adenocarcinoma (13%), lymphoma (13%), and adenoma (6%). Squamous cell carcinoma was the most frequent form of carcinoma (117 cases), followed by lymphoma (88 cases), and spindle cell sarcoma (56 cases). Approximately 85% of all cases corresponded to malignant neoplasms. A relationship between sex and histogenesis was observed, but there was no gender association with malignant behavior. Also, hematopoietic/lymphoreticular tumors occurred more frequently at an early age, than other types of neoplasms. To the extent of our knowledge, this is the first epidemiological report indicating the most common neoplasms in a Mexican domestic cat population.

Abstract Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most diagnosed malignancy worldwide. The global burden is expected to increase along with ongoing westernized behaviors and lifestyle. The etiology of CRC remains elusive and most likely combines environmental and genetic factors. The Kv2.1 potassium channel encoded by KCNB1 plays a collection of roles in malignancy of cancer and may be a key factor of CRC susceptibility. Our study provides baseline association between Tunisian CRC and interactions between KCNB1 variants and lifestyle factors. Methods A case-control study involving 300 CRC patients, and 300 controls was conducted Patients were carefully phenotyped and followed till the end of study. KCNB1 genotyping was confirmed by Sanger sequencing. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to assess the clinical status, lifestyle and study polymorphisms association with CRC. Results We noted significant gender association with CRC occurrence. Moreover, CRC risk increases with high meat and fat consumption, alcohol use and physical activity (PA). Carriage of rs1051296 A/G and both rs11468831 ins/del and del/del genotypes (p < 0.001) were significantly associated with CRC risk. Analysis according to gender reveals correlation of rs1051295 A/G, rs11468831 non ins/ins (p = 0.01) with CRC susceptibility regardless of patients’ gender while rs3331 T/C (p = 0.012) was associated with females. Stratification study according to malignancy site; Rectal Cancer (RC) and Colon Cancer (CC), reveals increasing RC risk by gender and high meat and fat consumption, alcohol use and PA. However, additional association with high brine consumption was noted for CC. The rs1051295 A/G (p = 0.01) was associated with RC risk. Increased CC risk was associated with carriage of rs1051295 A/G, rs11168831 (del/del) and (ins/del) genotypes. Conclusion The risk of CRC increases with modifiable factors by Western influences on Tunisian lifestyle such as alcohol use, high fat consumption and possibly inadequate intake of vegetables. In addition, KCNB1 polymorphisms also markedly influence CRC susceptibility. Our study establishes key elements of a baseline characterization of clinical state, Western influenced lifestyle and KCNB1 variants associated with Tunisian CRC.
