This study aims to gather data from public and private primary school parents located in the urban, suburban, and rural areas that would contribute to understanding parental roles regarding fully online learning for their children during COVID-19. We also discussed several parents’ self-identified issues on their ability to participate in their children’s fully online learning experiences. A qualitative study was employed as the methodological basis for eliciting 12 parents whose children in 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade attending conventional learning before school closure due to the pandemic. The semi-structured interview was conducted, and verbatim transcripts were analyzed using inductive and thematic analysis approaches. Four major themes were identified from parents’ role during home learning, including organizing and managing, mentoring and instructing, facilitating, and motivating children learning. Online learning relied on how active parents engage and maintain children’s interaction with learning content, teachers, and peers to familiarise their children with online educational settings successfully. However, personal issues arise, which can be stressful as teaching young learners virtually need special attention. Having significant responsibilities to their children learning, parents disclosed key issues and struggled, resulting in a rapid move from face-to-face to online instructions; learning value, learning efficiency, mental and physical health, accessibility.

Covid-19 has been around us for over a year and due to massive restrictions, many nations are still struggling to formulate an ideal education system. As a result of the emergency outbreak, the education system is compromised and this has a direct impact on both instructors and students. The latter were found to experience more significant challenges to continue learning in this crisis, and this requires eclectic strategies for the system to properly function again. Since the number of Covid-19 cases surges every day in Malaysia, it is critical that we address the most pressing concerns that students are currently facing when online learning is abruptly employed to substitute face-to-face (FTF) education. Thus, this paper identified specific challenges faced by the students of Universiti Teknologi MARA Cawangan Pulau Pinang, as well as the opportunities that came with the disruptions that were predicted to be used as optimal ways to receive and distribute online learning information successfully. In this study, 70 participants took part, and the data was gathered through a structured interview that was recorded on videos. The findings demonstrated that, despite the challenges, learners are gradually accepting these new standards, provided suitable learning techniques are used in the education system.

Online learning is the fastest growing segment in U.S. higher education and is increasingly adopted in public and private not-for-profit institutions. While the impact of online learning on educational outcomes is becoming more clear, the literature on its connection with student engagement is sparse. Student engagement measures identify key aspects of the learning process that can improve learning and outcomes like retention and achievement. The few studies investigating the link between online learning and student engagement found positive benefits for online learners compared to face-to-face learners in terms of perceived academic challenge, learning gains, satisfaction, and better study habits. On the other hand, face-to-face learners reported higher levels of environment support, collaborative learning, and faculty interaction. However, these studies did not effectively account for the differences in background characteristics like age, time spent working or caring for dependents, and enrollment status. Further, they did not consider the increasingly large population of students who enroll in both online and face-to-face courses. In our study, we used propensity score matching on the 2015 National Survey of Student Engagement data to account for the disparities in these groups’ demographics variables. After matching, we found that some of the previous literature’s differences diminish or disappear entirely. This suggests differences in supportive environments and learning strategies have more to do with online student characteristics than learning mode. However, online learning still falls well below other modes in terms of collaborative learning and interaction with faculty.

The rapid development of technological advances has brought many alterations and development to many profit-driven as well as non-profit-oriented organizations. Higher learning institutions have also benefited from technological advancements in this setting. Although the use of technology and the widespread use of online learning are no longer uncommon in the technology world, the introduction by students, undergraduate and postgraduate students of online learning courses, however, is still not as familiar as expected. This study focuses on the adoption and implementation of Malaysian higher education online courses to reach out to rural students and thus provides a systematic conceptual framework that emphasises the effect of different aspects. Students are enrolled in online courses at public and private universities in Malaysia, as they have been removed from the path of formal education. Using a self-directed survey, the data will be collected. Ultimately, the outcomes of this study can provide valuable insights into organisational methods and strengthen the leadership of a university administration that can contribute to improving student involvement and efficient programme usage.

Many higher educational institutes are forced to the online mode of lecture delivery without fully understanding students’ perspectives of remote study during COVID-19, and the resource limitations of students to engage successfully in remote learning. The present study aimed to understand this gap and the students’ perspective. We collected and analysed the devices, which used by the students to connect to remote learning in a developing country. It was found that the majority of students are dependent on the laptop-smartphone combination to engage in remote learning, particularly the students in rural areas. The results highlighted the importance of smartphones in the online learning experience, considering their affordability, relatively long battery life, inbuilt internet capabilities, and portability. Although students indicated their willingness for remote learning, they clearly recognised the need for face-to-face teaching return to avoid some of the challenges and disadvantages they face as a part of remote learning.

The Covid-19 pandemic almost stalled the face-to-face learning method in all institutions across the globe. Consequently, for learning to continue uninterrupted, there was a need to change teaching mode to online using social media and other platforms. This research aimed to examine the effectiveness of online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic and the challenges geography students faced in implementing this type of study. The research used a descriptive qualitative approach involving questionnaires designed to determine the implementation of online learning and the challenges encountered. The questions were structured through synthesizing various components of learning. Random selection was used to select 305 participants from various higher education institutions in the Aceh Region, Indonesia. The results indicated that online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic was effectively implemented. However, some challenges were encountered, including students who could not fully participate since they could not log in to the provided learning platforms. Furthermore, students from rural areas had poor internet connectivity besides the inability to buy internet quota. There were many instances of reported power supply failures, and this hindered online learning. Overall, learning geography during the pandemic was effective, though it had a fair share of challenges. The research also identified the need to develop an online learning model, teaching material, and multimedia in supporting geography-based online learning.     Keywords: Assessing; Effectiveness; Geography-based online learning; Covid-19; Higher education Copyright (c) 2021 Geosfera Indonesia and Department of Geography Education, University of Jember     This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share A like 4.0 International License

Malaysia is estimated to become an “aging society” country by 2030 due to the increase in the number of senior citizens in the country. This is expected to lead to issues relevant to the welfare of the elderly when there is an outflow of guardians to the urban cities. Thus, this study was conducted to explain the pattern of caring for the elderly among their guardians. This qualitative study was conducted in Yan, Kedah, involving 26 respondents among the elderly. Face-to-face interviews have been conducted by researchers using semi-structured interview forms related to demographics and elderly care patterns. Moreover, a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) has also been conducted with the subjects to find out more about the issues being studied. The data obtained has been analyzed descriptively and thematically to answer the research questions. The results showed that there has been migrations of the elderly’s guardians from rural areas to urban areas. Most respondents live with their spouse or alone in the village because of their guardian’s job commitments. The results also demonstrated that respondents chose to live in their own homes rather than their children’s homes. The study also suggested that authorities need to provide social support for the elderly who live in rural areas, especially to care for the welfare of these groups.

In this study; It is aimed to examine the effects of distance education on preschool children. In this study, a case study based on qualitative data made with semi-structured interview technique was conducted by the preschool teachers of children who went to the preschool institution to examine the effect of distance education on children, and analyzed by content analysis method. In the study conducted in the COVID-19 epidemic period in the 2019-2020 spring period, the teachers of the students going to public and private schools were interviewed from afar. When other results obtained from the study are analyzed, 35 pre-school teachers participated in the study and the majority of the study consists of women between the ages of 30 and 35. The majority of the participants are undergraduate graduates, and it is stated that they work in a private school and are also teachers for 6 years or more. In addition, while it was stated that distance education is inefficient compared to face to face education, it was determined that the biggest problem in the distance education process was communication. It has been found that the greatest contribution of distance education in the pandemic process is that it ensures that children do not leave education.
