The potential relationship between visual impairment and adolescents’ self-concept has been the subject of much controversy. Several studies, as a result of poor methodology and questionable interpretation, failed to shed new light on this relationship. This study, utilizing a group of blind and low vision adolescents and sighted peers from an urban environment, reveals significant differences in global self-concept, as well as specific components of self-concept among these groups. The need for still more research in this area is stressed.

This article examines the complexity of the relationship between ‘seeing’ and ‘non-seeing’ and its connection to a knowledge of the Self in Julian Schnabel’s film Le Scaphandre et le papillon. It is argued that ‘seeing’ is an impediment to an understanding of the visible world, while variations on ‘non-seeing’ enhance knowledge of visibility and Self. In the context of the filmic text, knowledge is associated specifically with the act of retrospectivity in writing and in the mind. This reading of the film as a retrospective and visually veiled event is reinforced and enhanced by reference to the work of two contemporary French writers. Visual impairment is the subject of Hélène Cixous’s autobiographical text Savoir. For Cixous, myopia and its ‘seeing’ are linked to a knowledge that is only attainable retrospectively through nostalgia. The work of Hervé Guibert draws on the philosophical and literary implications of half-sightedness and blindness as gateways to a different expression of knowledge and ‘sight’ that take their inspiration, by contrast, from a ‘continuum’ of invisibility in which ‘non-seeing’ is represented as a continuous seeing in thought.

The data analysis of the research results was carried out qualitatively. The approach used is a phenomenological approach, where the subjects studied are transgender women who study at the Makassar Tourism Academy. The total population of participants was divided into four age groups: 4 to 7 years, 8 to 11, 12 to 17 and 18 to 30 years. The results of the various analyzes carried out showed that those affected by low vision obtained lower scores in some dimensions of the self-concept in the four age groups, compared with peers of normal vision. This leads to highlight the need to act in the psychoeducational field to influence the adequate development of the self-concept from the early school years. It is concluded by making a call of attention to teachers involved in their education, in order to provide support in the curricular areas that require it and introduce methodological changes in the teaching-learning process that will help these children and young people to improve their selfconcept and academic performance, as well as to facilitate their social inclusion. Keywords: self-concept; low vision; childhood; youth; educationResumen.

People typically provide higher similarity ratings in response to the question “How similar is the typical preppie to you?” than to the question “How similar are you to the typical preppie?” Observed asymmetries in comparisons of the self and person prototypes have been offered as evidence that the self-concept acts as a habitual reference point in social judgment However, such a task does not test the habitual placement of a concept in the referent position of a comparison In this study, participants judged the similarity between the self and person prototypes in response to linguistic (forced directional) queries or to spatial (nonforced) queries in which the self was positioned above or below the person concept Participants also rated pairs of familiar and unfamiliar countries in a similar manner, to replicate and extend the work of Tversky (1977) Expected asymmetries were observed in forced comparisons The self and the familiar country were seen as more similar to other people and less familiar countries, respectively, when the former concepts served as the referent of a comparison than when they served as the subject Asymmetries were not observed in the nonforced conditions, and mean similarity in these conditions was of the same magnitude as in the forced condition in which the more familiar stimulus was the referent of the comparison This result provides the first direct evidence that the self serves as a habitual referent in similarity judgments
