THE OPTIMISTIC SYMBOLISMS IN ERNEST HEMINGWAY’S  THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA

This study aims at explaining the symbols used in the novel and describing the values of optimistic reflected in the symbols used in Hemingway’s The Old man and The Sea. This research is classified as a descriptive qualitative method. The primary data source of this study is the novel The Old Man and the sea by Ernest Hemingway. The collecting data process is note-taking technique. This study is also categorized as library research. Based on the findings and discussion, the researcher draws the conclusion such follow. First, it is found that there are eight symbols used in this novel. They are classified into Individual symbol and Universal symbol. In the novel the Old Man and the Sea the symbols which the researcher considers as individual symbols. Individual symbols are the old man as a symbol of someone who has optimistic, Manolin as a symbol of hope, Marlin as a symbol Struggle of life, Shark as a symbol of Destruction and problem, joe Di Maggio as a symbol Strong desire, bird as a symbol of help. The second category is Universal symbol. universal symbol are Sea as symbol of universe, Lion as symbol of strength. there are two elements or values which characterize someone as the one who has optimistic life which is reflected in the symbols used in this novel. They are the values of struggle and positive thinking, Second, Those symbols reflect the values of optimistic life which is to be the theme of the novel.

AbstractThis study aims at explaining the symbols used in the novel and describing the values of optimistic of life reflected in the symbols used in Coelho’s The Alchemist. This research is classified as a descriptive qualitative method. The primary data source of this study is the novel The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. The collecting data process is a note-taking technique. This study is also categorized as library research. Based on the findings and discussion, the researcher draws the conclusion such follows. First, there are six elements or values which characterize someone as the one who has an optimistic view of life and these ones are reflected as the symbols used in this novel. They are the values of hope, faith, power, struggle, positive-thinking, and respect. Second, that there are twelve symbols used in The Alchemist, those symbols are divided into three groups which consist of four symbols of characters, two symbols of events or concepts and six symbols of things. The result of the study shows that the twelve symbols in The Alchemist are how the author addresses Optimistic through a story of self-quest of the author. According to the whole finding, the symbols lead the readers to understand the message of Paulo Coelho that everybody can find their happiness in themselves. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan simbol-simbol yang digunakan dalam novel dan menggambarkan nilai-nilai optimistis kehidupan yang tercermin dalam simbol-simbol yang digunakan dalam Coelho's The Alchemist. Penelitian ini diklasifikasikan sebagai metode deskriptif kualitatif. Sumber data primer dari penelitian ini adalah novel The Alchemist karya Paulo Coelho. Proses pengumpulan data adalah teknik mencatat. Penelitian ini juga termasuk penelitian kepustakaan. Berdasarkan temuan dan diskusi, peneliti menarik kesimpulan sebagai berikut. Pertama, ada enam elemen atau nilai-nilai yang mencirikan seseorang sebagai orang yang memiliki pandangan hidup yang optimis dan yang tercermin sebagai simbol yang digunakan dalam novel ini. Mereka adalah nilai-nilai harapan, iman, kekuatan, perjuangan, pemikiran positif, dan rasa hormat. Kedua, bahwa ada dua belas simbol yang digunakan dalam The Alchemist, simbol-simbol itu dibagi menjadi tiga kelompok yang terdiri dari empat simbol karakter, dua simbol peristiwa atau konsep dan enam simbol benda. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kedua belas simbol dalam The Alchemist adalah bagaimana penulis membahas Optimistic melalui kisah pencarian diri penulis. Menurut seluruh temuan itu, simbol-simbol itu mengarahkan para pembaca untuk memahami pesan Paulo Coelho bahwa setiap orang dapat menemukan kebahagiaan mereka dalam diri mereka sendiri. Abstrak - Aguk Irawan adalah salah satu sastrawan yang menggunakan sastra novel sebagai media dakwahnya. Penanaman pesan-pesan moral-spiritual penulis kepada pembaca melalui tokoh yang dihidupkan di dalamnya. Peneliti tertarik dengan salah satu karya beliau untuk diteliti yang kemudian terangkum dengan judul, “Maqamat Tokoh Midah dalam Novel Mekkah: Memoar Luka Seorang TKW Karya Aguk Irawan”. Novel yang terinspirasi dari kisah nyata ini menggambarkan tentang pengembaraan jiwa seorang perempuan dalam menemukan Tuhannya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode library research atau penelitian kepustakaan. Adapun sumber data yang digunakan adalah sumber data primer yaitu novel Mekkah: Memoar Luka Seorang TKW, sedangkan sumber data sekundernya adalah beberapa karya Aguk Irawan yang lain dan juga sumber referensi yang terkait dengan penelitian. Berdasarkan hasil analisa yang telah peneliti lakukan dapat ditarik kesimpulan bahwa novel Mekkah: Memoar Luka Seorang TKW merupakan novel yang mengandung ajaran tasawuf. Aguk Irawan menyampaikan ajaran tasawufnya melalui tokoh Midah Hamidah yang terangkum dalam laku kehidupannya sehari - hari. Peneliti menemukan beberapa maqamat yang tergambar dari tokoh Midah Hamidah, diantaranya adalah: taubat, zuhud, sabar, syukur, dan ridha. Novel karya Aguk Irawan ini sangat berguna untuk digunakan sebagai media dakwah di kalangan remaja maupun masyarakat pada umumnya.Abstract - Aguk Irawan is one of the writers who used novel literature as his propaganda media. Planting the writer's moral-spiritual messages to the reader through the characters who are turned on in them. Researchers are interested in one of his works for research which is then summarized with the title, "Maqamat Tokoh Midah dalam Novel Mekkah: Memoar Luka Seorang TKW Karya Aguk Irawan”. This novel, inspired by a true story, depicts the wandering of a woman's soul in finding her God. This research uses library research or library research. The source of the data used is the primary data source, namely the Mecca novel: Memoirs of Luka of a TKW, while the secondary data source is some of Aguk Irawan's other works and also a reference source related to research. Based on the results of the analysis that researchers have done, it can be concluded that the novel Mecca: Memoirs of Luka of a TKW is a novel that contains the teachings of Sufism. Aguk Irawan conveyed his Sufism teachings through the figure of Midah Hamidah summarized in his daily life. Researchers found several maqamat drawn from the Midah Hamidah figures, including repentance, zuhud, patience, gratitude, and pleasure. This novel by Aguk Irawan is very useful to be used as a media for da'wah among teenagers and the general public.Keywords - Literary works, Novels, Maqamat, Spirituality, Hermeneutics

The object of the research is a novel the magnificent Ambersons by Newton Booth Tarkington. The problem of this study is how George Amberson Minafer, the major character copes with his problem. The objective of this study is to analyze the novel based on the psychological approach. The researcher employs a qualitative method. In this method, the researcher uses two data sources, namely primary and secondary data sources. The primary data source is the novel itself. The secondary data sources are books about psychology and other sources, which are related to the analysis. The method of data collection is documentation and the technique of data analysis is descriptive technique. Based on the analysis, the researcher draws two conclusions: first, George Amberson Minafer copes his problem through changing his behaviour, from negative behavior to a positive one. He becomes more optimistic, independent and caring for his family. Second, George Amberson Minafer copes his problem through his actions. He has the courage to admit his mistake. He asks forgiveness to the man that he hurt most.

Sometimes the children like to imagine with what they see, hear, and read. In this novel, Prue is one of the children who experiences adventure by her imagination.This study is conducted to enrich the topic about imagination. Imagination in the object is analyzed using dream theory by Sigmund Freud. This research is using qualitative method. The novel of Wildwood by Colin Meloy is the primary data source. While, the supporting data are taken from secondary data source.The researchers find a result of this study; Prue’s imagination before she entered the Impassable Wilderness. Her imagination sometimes seems real even though not all of their imagination become real. But, this novel makes one of the children becomes real when she faces the problem of that myth.

Yanti, N. R. and Fanani, Abu (2020). Institutional Racism in Angie Thomas’ The Hate U Give. Keywords: racism, institutional racism, African American literary criticism. This article tries to analyze a novel written by Angie Thomas entitled The Hate U Give and focuses on the main character named Starr Carter. The purpose of this article is to know racism that occurs in the novel and the way Starr has to deal with it. The method used in this study is qualitative research or library research, it means the data are concerned with texts, written words, phrases or symbols. Primary data source of this research is taken from the novel while secondary data sources are taken from articles, journals, websites, and books that relate with this analysis. The collected data are analyzed by applying institutional racism theory in African American literary criticism. As the result of the analysis it is found that there are three parts of institutional racism portrayed in this novel, those are ignorance toward Black Panthers’ Ten-Point Program, the shooting in license checking, and physical punishment in police patrol.

This study is entitled “Characterization and Three Dimensions of the Main Character in Looking For Alaska”. This study is concerned with the method of the characterization based on the three dimensions of the main character and intrinsic elements in the novel. The main purpose of this study is to find out how the author presents the main character in terms of the physiological, psychological, and sociological dimensions. This study was based on library research and used documentation method in collecting data. Then the data obtained were analyzed descriptively using descriptive qualitative method. Some theories of characterization were used such as the theory of characterization proposed by Kenney (1966), the theory of character dimensions by Egri (1960). The data source of this study is a novel entitled Looking For Alaska by John Green (2011). The analysis started with the overview of the biography of John Green and that was followed by the synopsis of the novel, and the data was categorized based on the theories. Based on Kenney’s theory, the main character is shaped through the mixing method of the characterization. In addition, based on Egri’s theory, there are three character dimensions (physiological, psychological, and sociological) involved in the shaping and presentation of the main character.

Islamic education based on local wisdom is an important component in the world of education today because humans not only need knowledge but also spiritual strength in a personality full of wisdom, good value, embedded and followed by community members which is then reflected in words, deeds, and feelings related to God, self, fellow humans. Education can be obtained from anywhere. One of them is through quality and quality literary works, namely the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk by Ahmad Tohari. This study aims to determine the values of Islamic education based on local wisdom in the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk by Ahmad Tohari. This research is a type of library research research with a library approach. The primary data source is the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk by Ahmad Tohari and other related sources. The data collection method used documentary studies with content analysis techniques. The results of the study concluded that the values of Islamic education based on local wisdom contained in the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk by Ahmad Tohari were the value of aqidah / faith education, the value of worship education, the value of moral education and the value of social education.

Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan ketidakadilan gender dalam bidang sosial, politik dan ekonomi serta bentuk perlawanan tokoh utama dalam Perempuan di Titik Nol, novel Karya Nawal el-Saadawi. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kepustakaan bersifat deskriptif kualitatif. Sumber data adalah novel Perempuan di Titik Nol Karya Nawal el-Saadawi yang diterbitkan oleh Yayasan Obor Indonesia 2006. Data dalam penelitian ini berupa kutipan kata, frasa, klausa, kalimat dan paragraf dari novel. Dari hasil penelitian ini, ditemukan dua hal yakni, 1) ketidakadilan gender dalam bidang sosial pada novel Perempuan di Titik Nol berupa tindakan kekerasan, penghinaan dan pelecehan terhadap tokoh utama serta cacian dari kaum laki-laki. Ketidakadilan gender dalam bidang politik berupa batasan untuk memperoleh pendidikan dan dibatasinya ruang bagi kaum perempuan untuk terlibat dalam ranha politik. Ketidakadilan gender dalam bidang ekonomi pada novel Perempuan di Titik Nol berupa beban kerja yang dialami oleh tokoh Firdaus yang sangat padat sehingga dia harus bekerja keras untuk bertahan hidup. Bentuk perlawanan tokoh utama dalam Novel Perempuan di Titik Nol berupa perlawanan tokoh utama terhadap proses stereotip, subordinasi marginal dan kekerasan terhadap perempuan.Kata kunci: novel, ketidakadilan gender, feminisme This research aimed to reveal and describe gender inequity in Perempuan di Titik Nol novel by Nawal el-Saadawi in social, political, and economic sectors and the main character’s resistance. This is a library research using descriptive qualitative method. Data source of this study is Perempuan di Titik Nol novel by Nawal el-Saadawi, published by Yayasan Obor Indonesia in 2006. Data of the research are quoted words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and paragraphs from the novel Perempuan di Titik Nol by Nawal el-Saadawi. The results of this study discovered 3 issues, i.e. 1) gender inequities in social sector in the novel Perempuan di Titik Nol are the main character experienced many acts of violence, humiliation, and harassment against her as well as insult from men, 2) gender inequities in politic sphere are a limitation to obtain education and space for women to be involved in politic field, and 3) gender inequities in economic sector are the workload experienced by Firdaus is extremely heavy so he must work hard to be able to survive. The main character’s resistance in the novel Perempuan di Titik Nol is the resistance to the stereotyping, marginal subordination, or violence against women.Keywords: novel, gender inequity, feminism
