Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan ketidakadilan gender dalam bidang sosial, politik dan ekonomi serta bentuk perlawanan tokoh utama dalam Perempuan di Titik Nol, novel Karya Nawal el-Saadawi. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kepustakaan bersifat deskriptif  kualitatif. Sumber data adalah novel Perempuan di Titik Nol Karya Nawal el-Saadawi yang diterbitkan oleh Yayasan Obor Indonesia 2006. Data dalam penelitian ini berupa kutipan kata, frasa, klausa, kalimat dan paragraf dari novel. Dari hasil penelitian ini, ditemukan dua hal yakni, 1) ketidakadilan gender dalam bidang sosial pada novel Perempuan di Titik Nol berupa tindakan kekerasan, penghinaan dan pelecehan terhadap tokoh utama serta cacian dari kaum laki-laki. Ketidakadilan gender dalam bidang politik berupa batasan untuk memperoleh pendidikan dan dibatasinya ruang bagi kaum perempuan untuk terlibat dalam ranha politik. Ketidakadilan gender dalam bidang ekonomi pada novel Perempuan di Titik Nol berupa beban kerja yang dialami oleh tokoh Firdaus yang sangat padat sehingga dia harus bekerja keras untuk bertahan hidup. Bentuk perlawanan tokoh utama dalam Novel Perempuan di Titik Nol berupa perlawanan tokoh utama terhadap proses stereotip, subordinasi marginal dan kekerasan terhadap perempuan.Kata kunci: novel, ketidakadilan gender, feminisme  This research aimed to reveal and describe gender inequity in Perempuan di Titik Nol novel by Nawal el-Saadawi in social, political, and economic sectors and the main character’s resistance. This is a library research using descriptive qualitative method. Data source of this study is Perempuan di Titik Nol novel by Nawal el-Saadawi, published by Yayasan Obor Indonesia in 2006. Data of the research are quoted words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and paragraphs from the novel Perempuan di Titik Nol by Nawal el-Saadawi. The results of this study discovered 3 issues, i.e. 1) gender inequities in social sector in the novel Perempuan di Titik Nol are the main character experienced many acts of violence, humiliation, and harassment against her as well as insult from men, 2) gender inequities in politic sphere are a limitation to obtain education and space for women to be involved in politic field, and 3) gender inequities in economic sector are the workload experienced by Firdaus is extremely heavy so he must work hard to be able to survive. The main character’s resistance in the novel Perempuan di Titik Nol is the resistance to the stereotyping, marginal subordination, or violence against women.Keywords: novel, gender inequity, feminism

This study is entitled “Characterization and Three Dimensions of the Main Character in Looking For Alaska”. This study is concerned with the method of the characterization based on the three dimensions of the main character and intrinsic elements in the novel. The main purpose of this study is to find out how the author presents the main character in terms of the physiological, psychological, and sociological dimensions. This study was based on library research and used documentation method in collecting data. Then the data obtained were analyzed descriptively using descriptive qualitative method. Some theories of characterization were used such as the theory of characterization proposed by Kenney (1966), the theory of character dimensions by Egri (1960). The data source of this study is a novel entitled Looking For Alaska by John Green (2011). The analysis started with the overview of the biography of John Green and that was followed by the synopsis of the novel, and the data was categorized based on the theories. Based on Kenney’s theory, the main character is shaped through the mixing method of the characterization. In addition, based on Egri’s theory, there are three character dimensions (physiological, psychological, and sociological) involved in the shaping and presentation of the main character.

AbstractThis study aims at explaining the symbols used in the novel and describing the values of optimistic of life reflected in the symbols used in Coelho’s The Alchemist. This research is classified as a descriptive qualitative method. The primary data source of this study is the novel The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. The collecting data process is a note-taking technique. This study is also categorized as library research. Based on the findings and discussion, the researcher draws the conclusion such follows. First, there are six elements or values which characterize someone as the one who has an optimistic view of life and these ones are reflected as the symbols used in this novel. They are the values of hope, faith, power, struggle, positive-thinking, and respect. Second, that there are twelve symbols used in The Alchemist, those symbols are divided into three groups which consist of four symbols of characters, two symbols of events or concepts and six symbols of things. The result of the study shows that the twelve symbols in The Alchemist are how the author addresses Optimistic through a story of self-quest of the author. According to the whole finding, the symbols lead the readers to understand the message of Paulo Coelho that everybody can find their happiness in themselves.  Keywords: Concept of optimistic of life, Symbol, Self-quest. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan simbol-simbol yang digunakan dalam novel dan menggambarkan nilai-nilai optimistis kehidupan yang tercermin dalam simbol-simbol yang digunakan dalam Coelho's The Alchemist. Proses pengumpulan data adalah teknik mencatat. Penelitian ini juga termasuk penelitian kepustakaan. Berdasarkan temuan dan diskusi, peneliti menarik kesimpulan sebagai berikut. Pertama, ada enam elemen atau nilai-nilai yang mencirikan seseorang sebagai orang yang memiliki pandangan hidup yang optimis dan yang tercermin sebagai simbol yang digunakan dalam novel ini. Mereka adalah nilai-nilai harapan, iman, kekuatan, perjuangan, pemikiran positif, dan rasa hormat. Kedua, bahwa ada dua belas simbol yang digunakan dalam The Alchemist, simbol-simbol itu dibagi menjadi tiga kelompok yang terdiri dari empat simbol karakter, dua simbol peristiwa atau konsep dan enam simbol benda. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kedua belas simbol dalam The Alchemist adalah bagaimana penulis membahas Optimistic melalui kisah pencarian diri penulis. Menurut seluruh temuan itu, simbol-simbol itu mengarahkan para pembaca untuk memahami pesan Paulo Coelho bahwa setiap orang dapat menemukan kebahagiaan mereka dalam diri mereka sendiri. Kata kunci: Konsep optimistis kehidupan, Simbol, Self-quest.

This study aims at explaining the symbols used in the novel and describing the values of optimistic reflected in the symbols used in Hemingway’s The Old man and The Sea. This research is classified as a descriptive qualitative method. The primary data source of this study is the novel The Old Man and the sea by Ernest Hemingway. The collecting data process is note-taking technique. This study is also categorized as library research. Based on the findings and discussion, the researcher draws the conclusion such follow. First, it is found that there are eight symbols used in this novel. They are classified into Individual symbol and Universal symbol. In the novel the Old Man and the Sea the symbols which the researcher considers as individual symbols. Individual symbols are the old man as a symbol of someone who has optimistic, Manolin as a symbol of hope, Marlin as a symbol Struggle of life, Shark as a symbol of Destruction and problem, joe Di Maggio as a symbol Strong desire, bird as a symbol of help. The second category is Universal symbol. universal symbol are Sea as symbol of universe, Lion as symbol of strength. there are two elements or values which characterize someone as the one who has optimistic life which is reflected in the symbols used in this novel. They are the values of struggle and positive thinking, Second, Those symbols reflect the values of optimistic life which is to be the theme of the novel. Keywords: optimistic, symbol

The film Friends with Benefits is the data source in this study. In collecting the data through library research by viewing films, reading scripts, and taking notes. In analyzing the data, the qualitative method is used and presented descriptively based on the theory adopted in this study. The theory used in this study is the theory of literature proposed by Wellek and Warren (1949) about characterization. The results of this study showed that only three characterization dimensions were analyzed. In presenting these dimensions, this study presents an overview and/or dialogue from the film. There are three dimensions of the characterization of the main character analyzed in this study: physiological, sociological, and psychological. These physical and psychological characteristics combine to build up Jamie Rellis and Dylan Harper, a romantic person in the film Friends with Benefits.

This research is entitled Liberal Feminist Values As Reflected In Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina. This novel described a woman who broke her wedding because she wants to feel the love. Through Anna Karenina, she fought for her rights to express her opinion to her husband. The purpose of this study is to describe the characteristics of the main character and feminist characteristics of the main character in the novel. Qualitative method is applied in this research. The main data source in this study is Leo Tolstoy's novel Anna Karenina and to complete the data source, this research also uses other books, reviews of novels, films and sources from the internet. The method of data analysis in this study is qualitative method. In this study, a feminist approach from Rosamarie Tong and "Liberal Feminists" from Betty Friedan are employed in this research. The researcher also analyzed the main characters by describing their characteristics using the theory from M.J. Murphy. Based on the analysis, the results of this study have produced several conclusions. First, character of Anna Karenina descriptions by people around her in some characterization there are beautiful, kind, loving, mysterious and negative thinking. Second, Anna Karenina struggle her opinion in public especially her husband. She wants to express and defending her opinion. However, seen from liberal feminism perspective the main character show direct resistence with maintains her opinion and ignore opinion from her husband.

This thesis analyzed the transgender process in the main character. The purpose of this thesis is to find out and understand how that happens and to look for the two transgender causes found in the novel. The main character in this novel is a boy who always feels confused with his identity. He always tried to find out who he was, find out which identity he felt comfortable with. But as long as he was confused, he did not get significant support from his family, girlfriends and his friends to stay with the gender he had at that time, instead, they directed him to follow his conscience. All obstacles experienced by the boy in finding his true identity make this novel interesting to look deeper. The theory used to analyze is Theory by Susan Stryker and the concept of diagnostic criteria for gender identity disorder by the American Psychiatric Association. The research method used in this thesis is a qualitative method and library research. The author collected the data from the novel and from several sources of articles, books, and journals related to this thesis. The results of this thesis are to reveal the truth that transgender criteria are truly experienced by the main characters and get the causes of the transgender in his daily lives. The novel Sepertiga Malam di Manhattan by Arumi E is very interesting to study. This novel is a novel about the struggle of a family to get happiness. This novel is the Arumi E's 27th newest novel. The struggle in this novel is to make the family happy, expecting for the baby. Before writing the novel, Arumi E did a research in the places written in the novel to achieve a very interesting fictional story and most of this story was taken from the traveling results so it was so interesting. The objective of this research is to describe (1) the Autopoetic System in the novel Sepertiga MalamdiManhattan by Arumi E. (2) The differentiation system in the Novel Sepertiga Malamdi Manhattan by Arumi E.The research method used is in the form of a descriptive qualitative method that uses a social system approach. The method used by the researcher is the dialectical method. The data source used in this research is the novel Sepertiga Malamdi Manhattan by Arumi E, published by Gramedia publisher in 2018. The data collection in this study uses the steps of reading the novel. To collect data, the researcher use any instrument.There are two results of the study: (1) The autopoetic system in the novel Sepertiga MalamdiManhattan by Arumi E. is concerning to some characters who have their own beliefs or rules in their lives who do not want to follow the rules of others, they are more confident in their own way to success and purpose of life. (2) The system of differentiation in the novel Sepertiga Malamdi Manhattan by Arumi E. is covering the handling of changes in the environment, the characters are able to adapt to the new environment, which has a different culture from the original culture. This shows evidence of the system autopoetic and differentiation in the novel Sepertiga MalamdiManhattan by Arumi E.

Hedonism is a view of life in philosophy that seeks to avoid pain and make pleasure as the main goal in life. People who embrace hedonism tend to over-pursue pleasure. The hedonism lifestyle is mostly carried out by 18th century people especially the nobles who live in high culture. They are as close to hedonism as they are in the Persuasion novel by Jane Austen. Sir Walter Elliot the main character is a nobleman who did a lot of hedonism. Hedonism which is seen as too glorifying personal pleasure to ignore others. The purpose of this study was to find out the types of hedonism done by Sir Walter Elliot in Persuasion. This research uses descriptive qualitative method because all data are in the form of sentences. The researcher uses a philosophical approach and analyzes data using Weijers' theory as the main theory. The results of this study found that Sir Walter Elliot performed two types of hedonism, namely aesthetic hedonism and selfish hedonism.
