This research studied the self-concealment of the main character in Daddy Long Legs novel. It is aimed at identifying self-concealment through the main character’s Johari Windows. This research also described fear of self-disclosure. The method used is descriptive-qualitative research This analysis is collaborating the concept of self-concealment with Johari Window. The results showed, Judy Abbott, the main character does self-concealment which is identified by the most dominated hidden area in her Johari Window which is including fear of self-disclosure. By comparing with previous self-concealment analysis in some literary studies, it is found that self-concealment is connected with queerness, deception, and either repression or suppression defense mechanism.

The thesis writer focuses on the analysis of Jin Seon’s defense mechanism as seen in Carnby Kim and Youngchan Hwang’s Bastard. The topic defense mechanism is chosen because it is important to find out of the proofs, the causal factors, and the effects of defense mechanism of the main character. There are three objectives intend to be achieved in this thesis, they are; to find out the proofs of Jin Seon’s defense mechanism, the causal factors of Jin Seon’s defense mechanism, and the effects of Jin Seon’s defense mechanism on himself, on Kyun Yoon, and on his father. The thesis writer applies the theory of defense mechanism, the concept of defense mechanism as seen in psychological point of view by Sigmund Freud, and conducts a descriptive qualitative research. The finding shows that there are fifteen proofs of Jin Seon’s defense mechanism and it is divided into four proofs for denial, three proofs for repression, two proofs for projection, one proof for reaction formation, three proofs for rationalization, and two proofs for sublimation. Besides, the thesis writer also concludes that there are ten causal factors of Jin Seon’s defense mechanism that are: two denial causal factors, one repression causal factor, two projection causal factor, one reaction formation causal factor, two rationalization causal factor, two sublimation causal factor. While both of them, the thesis writer also conclude that there are effects of Jin Seon’s defense mechanism on himself, on Kyun Yoon, and on his dad.Keywords:Defense,     Mechanism,    Webtoon.

Direct and indirect speech acts are the two types of speech acts. This study aims to know how indirect speech acts are employed in the movie "SpongeBob SquarePants." It employs descriptive qualitative research to explain the main character's speech act types. There is currently a scarcity of studies examining speech act types in cartoon or animation films; yet, it is necessary. According to this study, the result of this article is: first, there are seventy-four discussions of indirect speech acts obtained from all characters in the movie SpongeBob SquarePants. Each dialogue in the film SpongeBob SquarePants can be deduced to reveal the meaning of indirect speech acts. Second, The reader can use the domain analysis indirect speech acts summary to help them understand each dialogue in this movie that has a different meaning. This stage permitted the main characters to say literal things to the listener. The main character did not make a difficult-to-understand statement to the listener. This research looks at Yule's theory's utterances of indirect speech activities. As a result, the outcome differed from the prior study, despite the same issue.

This study investigates Self-Destructive Behavior of Hannah Baker in Thirteen Reasons Why novel, conducted in qualitative approach analysis of self-destructive behavior of the main character and what reasons or the causes of it through the narratives in the Thirteen Reasons Why novel. The goal of the study is to analyze how self-destructive behavior impacted the main character, Hannah Baker which is described using the theory of Self-Destructive Behavior and Defense Mechanisms by Sigmund Freud (1966). The result of this study shows that Hannah Baker developed the self-destructive behavior as a defense mechanisms from herself that triggered by trauma from the past. It started with the non-suicidal self-destructive behavior but soon turns into the suicidal self-destructive behavior. This study also shows how a suicide can really be an impact of the behavior that happens in the novel resulted from a non-suicidal self-destructive behavior that is not handled well, and all the mistreatments that the main character felt which produce the desire for ending her life.Keywords: Self-Defense Mechanism, Self-Destructive Behavior, Sigmund Freud, Suicide, Thirteen Reasons Why.

This research is aimed to find the signs then interpret the meaning of signs in Raya and the last dragon film. This film is the first Walt Disney project that was inspired by Southeast Asian cultures especially Indonesia. The design of the study is a semiotics approach by using Charles Sander Peirce’s theory. The type of research is a descriptive qualitative research method. The signs are collected, reduced, classified with Object Triadic; Icon, Index and Symbol then find the Interpretant through correlation between Representamen and Object. There are 30 signs found in the research. The meaning of the sign is divided into two categories, namely the meaning is appropriate with the story and the rest have representation about cultures. From the research of this film we can conclude a moral value: trust and togetherness and also pride about Southeast Asian cultures especially Indonesia can be shown abroad.

This research aims to find out types of negative politeness strategies expressed by the main character in the movie titled The Imitation Game. This research is categorised as descriptive qualitative research. The data of the research were taken from utterances identified as negative politeness strategies by the main character “Alan Turing” and analysed with theory proposed by (Brown & Levinson, 1988). Data were collected using the observation and non-participatory method. Additionally, to analyse the data, pragmatic identity method were used. The result discovered in this research are; 5 be conveniently indirect, 16 question and hedge, 1 be pessimistic,   6 give deference, 4 impersonalise interlocutors, and 4 state the FTA as the general rule, totalling to 36 indication of negative politeness strategies. Question and hedge became the most frequently used strategy the main character tends to assume unwillingness to comply to the other characters in The Imitation Game movie.

This study dealt with defense mechanisms in Rambo : The First Blood Film in reference to semiotic. It employed descriptive qualitative research method. This study was aimed to analyze: (1) The kinds of defense mechanisms experienced by Rambo and (2)  why defense mechanism affected the utterance and action of Rambo in reference of semiotic. The data of this study were dialogues statement and figure that contained defense mechanisms. The theories were applied by the writer from Sigmund freud (1993) about defense mechanism and Chandler (2007) about semiotic. Based on the analysis, there were five kinds of defense mechanism used by Rambo, namely Denial (23,8%), Displacement (4,8%). Projection (42,9),  Repression (14,3%), and Reaction Formation (14,3%) where Rambo used projection defense mechanisms the most. Fear that steam from trauma and to avoid conflict were the defense mechanism that happened and used by Rambo. Keywords: Defense mechanisms, semiotic, Rambo: The First Blood

<p>This is a descriptive qualitative research. The data sources are thevmanuscript and video of “Avatar” film. From the sources, the researcher takes 40 declarative utterances uttered by the main character (Jake Sully) to be analyzed. The research goals are 1) to identify the contexts of declarative utterances, 2) to identify the hearer’s responses of declarative utterances, 3) to explain the pragmatic force of declarative utterances viewed from the illocutionary force. Before define the force, the researcher explains the context for a better understanding about the speaker’s intention. The results of this research are, 1) every utterance has its own context: situation, participants, ends, act sequence, key, instrumentalities, norms, and genre, 2) the hearer’s responses are words response and act response, 3) utterance’s function reflects the pragmatic force, those 40 declarative utterances bring various forces; suggesting, appointing, reporting, requesting, claiming, thanking, asking, complaining, apologizing, confirming, blaming, ordering, advising, and sentencing.</p>

Zora Neale Hurston’s short story is a story of women with different perspective. This revealed the violence toward women and women’s resistance toward the construction of patriarchal. The violence was shown by a husband toward his wife in psychological, physical and sexual form. The theory used   Beauvoir‘s theory (2012). The researcher analyzed the problem in feminist approach. Women who experience oppression took the resistance as a form of struggle over their existence as women. It was reflected toward the main character in this short story. This descriptive qualitative research was used in this short story. This method was used for looking at data contexts that were hidden from quotations in a short story. The findings showed that Delia was able to resist her husband named Sykes. Delia sought her freedom by escaping the scandal the cruel treatment of her husband. Delia’s action contradicted with patriarchal construction that women had to be submissive and respectful towards men due to the women basically were dependent on men. Feminism appeared in this short story was concerned on women’s resistance toward violence experienced in social life in order to get freedom, rights and opportunities as a human.

ABSTRACT   This study is a defense mechanism analysis of the main character in Laurie Halse Anderson’s Speak novel. It aims at revealing how  defense mechanisms is experienced by Melinda Sordino as the main character of Speak novel by applying Sigmund Freud’s defense mechanism theory. The data is the narration and dialogue in the narrative implying defense mechanism strategies used by the main character in coping up with verbal, physical and phsychological bullying she experienced.  This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. The finding shows that the main character had  repression, rationalization, regression, reaction-formation, projection, replacement, isolation, identification, sublimation and turning to self as defense mechanisms strategies to oversome the conflicts.   Keywords: main character; defense mechanisms; phsychoanalysis.

This research aims to reveal: the types of speech acts used by the main character in “Spongebob Squarepants’ the movie and the previous studies in speech act analysis for knowing the way of the directives of speech act appears. It employed descriptive qualitative research in the explaining of speech acts types used by the main character. There is still a lack of research about the analysis of speech act categories in cartoon movie or animation movie, it is substantial to be carried out. The finding of this research is the directives speech act is the most frequently in SpongeBob SquarePants the movie with data 118 or 44,36% from a total of 266 or 100% of the whole data. Then, the similarity data found in the three journals about analysis of speech act with data that the directives speech act is the highest utterance in a cartoon movie.
