The antioxidant activities of extracts of purple, yellow and orange carrot varieties were evaluated by in vitro methods i.e. DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, and CUPRAC. The total polyphenols concentration was evaluated using Folin-Ciocalteu technique. The content of anthocyanins, chlorophylls and carotenoids was evaluated in fresh and frozen carrots. The anthocyanin concentration was also determined in carrot extracts. The effect of certain parameters of ultrasound-assisted extraction, i.e. extraction time, concentration and acidifying of extractant, as well as the type of raw material (fresh or frozen) was analyzed. The antioxidant potential as well as content of polyphenols and plant pigments were the highest in purple carrot extracts. The most effective extractant seems to be 70% (v/v) ethanol. The extension of the extraction time, in majority of cases, led to an increase of antioxidant activity of extracts, whereas the freezing of raw material generally decreased the above-mentioned activities. The effect of acidification of extractant is ambiguous and depends on the method applied to evaluate antioxidant activity.

The ultrasound-assisted extraction of phenolic compounds fromEpimedium brevicornuMaxim was modeled using response surface methodology. A Central Composite Design (CCD) was employed to optimize three extraction variables, including ethanol concentration (X1), extraction time (X2), and ratio of aqueous ethanol to raw material (X3), for the achievement of high extraction yield of the phenolic compounds. The optimized conditions areX1of 50% (v/v),X2of 27.5 min, andX3of 250 mL/g. Under these conditions, the experimental yield is 4.29 ± 0.033%(n=3). The antioxidant activity was evaluated using the DPPH assay and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). And it indicates that the phenolic compounds fromEpimedium brevicornuMaxim possess significant antioxidant activity. HPLC analysis reveals that the main phenolic compound in the extract product was identified as gallic acid, catechin (Cianidanol), p-hydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic acid, caffeic acid, ferulaic acid, rutin, benzoic acid, and quercetin.

The present study evaluated the effect of extraction techniques (ultrasound-assisted extraction (U) and shaking water bath extrac-tion (WB)), solvents (etha-nol, acetone and distilled water) and concentration (2.5% and 5%) on total phe-nolic content (TPC), anti-bacterial and antioxidant activities of extracts ob-tained from feijoa leaves, peel and pulp. The antibac-terial activity of feijoa ex-tracts were tested in vitro against 6 pathogens bacteria by the disc diffusion method and the antioxidant activity was evaluated by 2,2 diphe-nyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical assay. The results indicated that leaves and peel extracts exhibited stronger antibac-terial activity than that of pulp. In generally, WB-A5%, WB-W5%, U-A5% and U-W 5% extracted with acetone (A) and water (W) at 5% concentration from feijoa leaves, peel and pulp showed more antibacterial activity against all tested pathogen bacteria. The leaves, peel, and pulp ex-tracts had high antioxidant activity with 85.78-90.82%, 89.86-91.60%, and 81.49-91.31%, respectively. Peel extracts had slightly higher antioxidant activity than leaves and pulp extracts. TPC of leaves, peel, and pulp extracts were in the range of 488.99-554.00, 349.17-517, and 115.64-345.46 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/100 g of extract. The overall findings suggested that different part of feijoa (especially leaves and peel) could be used as a natural antibacterial and an-tioxidant for functional foods.

The use of green marine seaweed Ulva spp. as foods, feed supplements, and functional ingredients has gained increasing interest. Microwave-assisted extraction technology was employed to improve the extraction yield and composition of Ulva pertusa polysaccharides. The antioxidant activity of ulvan was also evaluated. The impacts of four independent variables, i.e., extraction time (X1, 30 to 60 min), power (X2, 500 to 700 W), water-to-raw-material ratio (X3, 40 to 70), and pH (X4, 5 to 7) were evaluated. The chemical structure of different polysaccharides fractions was investigated via FT-IR and the determination of their antioxidant activities. A response surface methodology based on a Box–Behnken design (BBD) was used to optimize the extraction conditions as follows: extraction time of 43.63 min, power level of 600 W, water-to-raw-material ratio of 55.45, pH of 6.57, and maximum yield of 41.91%, with a desired value of 0.381. Ulvan exerted a strong antioxidant effect against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) and showed reducing power in vitro. Ulvan protected RAW 264.7 cells against H2O2-induced oxidative stress by upregulating the expression and enhancing the activity of oxidative enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and superoxide dismutase (CAT). The results suggest that the polysaccharides from U. pertusa might be promising bioactive compounds for commercial use.

SummaryIntroduction: Due to the content of nutrients and taste attributes, the plant sprouts could become a valuable component of a healthy diet.Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the antioxidant potential of various sprouts extracts depending on the processing method of the plant material.Methods: The extracts in 96%(v/v) ethanol were prepared from fresh, frozen, dry and homogenized sprouts of alfalfa, broccoli, radish, lentil, mung bean, beetroot, sunflower, and kale, using ultrasound-assisted extraction. The antioxidant potential and total polyphenols content were evaluated by the in vitro methods.Results: The highest antioxidant activity was observed for beetroot and kale as well as broccoli sprouts extracts. The lower potential, in general, was observed in the case of alfalfa, lentil, and mung bean sprouts samples. The lowest activity was observed most frequently for the extracts from dry material, whereas the highest for homogenized as well as frozen and fresh.Conclusion: The plant sprouts, particularly beetroot, kale, and broccoli, could be a valuable source of natural antioxidants.

The aim of the work is to experimentally determine the optimal parameters for obtaining a tincture of rhizomes with roots of Sanguisorba officinalis and to investigate its antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. Materials and methods. Rhizomes with roots of Sanguisorba officinalis were harvested in autumn 2019. When establishing the optimal parameters of the technology of obtaining tincture, the evaluation criterion was the number of the sum of polyphenols and the amount of hydroxycinnamic acids, which were determined by spectrophotometric method according to the methods of the State Pharmacopoeia of Ukraine 2.0. Antimicrobial activity was studied by agar diffusion and serial dilutions, antioxidant – in vitro using a stable radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl – DPPH). Results. The optimal parameters for obtaining a tincture of rhizomes with roots of Sanguisorba officinalis was extraction method maceration at room temperature, raw material-finished product ratio 1:5, time 48 hours, extractant 50 % ethyl alcohol, the number of polyphenols, and the number of hydroxycinnamic acids in terms of dry raw materials not less than 4.0 % and 1.5 % respectively. The resulting tincture exhibits antimicrobial activity against microorganisms Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 (growth retardation 26.40 ± 1.04 mm), Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 (growth retardation 24.60 ± 0.68 mm) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCС 27853 (growth retardation 23.60 ± 0.68 mm) and at a dose of 0.02 ml showed antioxidant activity at the level of 70 %. Conclusions. The parameters of obtaining a tincture of rhizomes with roots of Sanguisorba officinalis were determined and its antimicrobial and antioxidant activity was studied.

Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) is widely used; however, the efficiency of extraction depends on the raw materials. Therefore, optimization of UAE must be investigated for each type of plant material. By-products from soursop fruit have not been studied as a source of bioactive compounds. In this work, the optimization of UAE conditions (extraction time (5, 10, and 15 min), pulse cycle (0.4, 0.7, and 1 s), and sonication amplitude (40%, 70%, and 100%)) for the extraction of phenolic compounds (soluble, hydrolyzable, condensed tannins, and total polyphenols) from soursop by-products (seed, peel, and columella) and pulp was evaluated using response surface methodology. The optimal conditions for UAE to obtain the highest total polyphenol content from by-products and pulp was dependent on the raw material. Peel resulted in the highest content of total polyphenols (187.32 mg/g dry matter [DM]) followed by columella (164.14 mg/g DM), seed (36.15 mg/g DM), and pulp (33.24 mg/g DM). The yield of polyphenolic content from peel and columella obtained with UAE was higher (32–37%) than conventional extraction for 2 h under stirring (14–16%). The contents of gallic acid (0.36–15.86 µg/g DM), coumaric acid (0.07–1.37 µg/g DM), and chlorogenic acid (9.18–32.67 µg/g DM) in the different parts of the fruit were higher in the extracts obtained by UAE compared with a conventional extraction method (0.08–0.61, 0.05–0.08, 3.15–13.08 µg/g DM, respectively), although it was dependent on the raw materials. Soursop by-products can be functionally important if they are used to extract bioactive compounds by UAE; a technology with high potential for commercial extraction on a large scale.
