Al2O3 particles reinforced ZL109 composites were prepared by in-situ reaction between Fe2O3+MnO2 and Al in this paper. The influence of ratio of Mn to Fe on the morphologies of Al-Si-Mn-Fe phase and mechanical properties of the composites was investigated. The microstructure was studied by electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that the Al2O3 particles displaced by the Fe2O3+MnO2/Al system are in nanosize. The acicular Al-Si-Fe phases change from acicular to polygonal shape and become smaller with the increase manganese content. The hardness test results have no big difference on the composites. However, the ultimate tensile strength at room temperature and 350°C enhance evidently with the increasing of Mn/Fe.

The Morowali Ni-laterite deposit is located in the East Sulawesi Ophiolite, which is a large ophiolite belt on Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. The Morowali deposit is developed on a laterite profile due to ophiolite weathering, with saprolite, limonite, and ferruginous cap horizons from the bottom to top. Based on the occurrence of garnierite as the main ore, occurring in the saprolite horizon, it can be classified that the ore deposit is hydrous Mg silicate-type. The Ni ore is classified into different types based on color and XRD and electron probe micro-analyzer analyses. Whole-rock geochemical study was also conducted to understand the mineralization process. The Morowali Ni deposit consists of serpentine-like and talc-like phases. The serpentine-like phase consists of Ni-lizardite and karpinskite (0.76–38.26 wt% NiO) while the talc-like phase is mainly composed of kerolite (4.02–8.02 wt% NiO). The serpentine-like garnierite exhibits high Ni and Fe contents and occurrence similar to that of the serpentine observed in the saprolite horizon, suggesting the serpentine-like garnierite originated from the bedrock, and Mg-Ni cation exchange occurred during laterization. Contrastingly, the lower Fe content of the talc-like phase (0.01–0.05 wt%) than the serpentine-like phase (0.14–7.03 wt%) indicates that the talc-like garnierite is of secondary origin since Fe is immobile during weathering. The Morowali Ni-laterite deposit was mainly formed during laterization. The repetition of dry and wet cycles in each year results in the formation of secondary garnierite.

Spherical Ni0.5Mn0.5CO3 is synthesized via carbonate co-precipitation method which uses NH4HCO3 as the precipitator. However, obvious agglomerate of secondary particles occurs when NH4HCO3 is used as the precipitator. The agglomerate particles can result in inferior physical characteristic. An improved carbonate co-precipitation which used NH4HCO3 doped with different proportion of NaOH as a new precipitator is tested in our study. Observed by SEM and Mastersizer, spherical morphology with narrow particle size distribution is synthesized with the proportion of NaOH reaches 10%. The element line analysis by Electron Probe Micro-analyzer shows symmetrical distributions of Ni and Mn elements via the improved carbonate co-precipitation.

Hypervelocity impact phenomena of long period stacking ordered type magnesium alloys (LPSO-Mg) plates were examined at the impact velocities of 4 km/s and 6 km/s. Ejecta veil and external bubble of debris of LPSO-Mg were darker than those of aluminum alloy A6061-T6. The size of external bubble of debris of LPSO-Mg was slightly smaller than that of A6061-T6. The velocity reduction of LPSOMg was slightly larger than that of A6061-T6. However, the scatter area of projectile and targets were not determined by electron probe micro-analyzer.

Supersaturation behavior of Al solid solutions and its effect on tensile property in Al-7Si-0.4Mg and Al-7Si-0.8Mg alloys during solution heat treatment were investigated in this study. As a result of Mg solubility measurement for Al solid solitions after solution heat treatment for 6 hrs by electron probe micro analyzer (EPMA)-wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (WDS), Al-7Si-0.8Mg alloy had the higher Mg solubility, about 0.55 mass%, corresponding to that of Al-Si-Mg ternary phase diagram. From the tensile test, Al-7Si-0.8Mg alloy showed the improved strength and similar elongation to that of Al-7Si-0.4Mg alloy.

Five oxidized metallic alloys, namely, Crofer22, equivalent ZMG232, stainless steel SS430, SS304 and Inconel718 were subjected to oxidation treatment in hot air environment for various period of time. Then the resulted oxide scale was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe micro analyzer (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). All the five alloys contain comparable amount of Cr, Mn, Fe, and their surface oxides as analyzed indicate to be Cr2O3 and (Mn, Fe)Cr2O4 spinel compound.
