Intelligence and Emotional/Behavioral Factors as Correlates of Achievement in Child Psychiatric Inpatients

This study investigated the extent to which IQ and emotional/behavioral factors were related to tested academic achievement in 56 child psychiatric inpatients. The first part of the study replicated and extended previous research; WISC—R IQs were highly correlated with tested achievement, Verbal IQs being more highly correlated with achievement than were Performance or Full Scale IQs. In the second part of the study which examined the relationship between the emotional/behavioral indices and achievement, only Trait Anxiety correlated significantly with achievement. However, after the relationship between Trait Anxiety and Verbal IQ was partialed out, the correlation between anxiety and achievement was no longer significant. These findings raise questions regarding the magnitude of the relationship between measures of emotional/behavioral status and tested academic achievement within a single sample of emotionally disturbed children and adolescents.

Abstract. Why do some people work best under pressure? In two studies, we examined whether and how people use anxiety to motivate themselves. As predicted, clarity of feelings moderated the relationship between trait anxiety and the tendency to use this emotion as a source of motivation (i.e., anxiety motivation). Furthermore, anxiety motivation mediated the relationship between trait anxiety and outcomes – including academic achievement (Study 1) as well as persistence and job satisfaction (Study 2). These findings suggest that individuals who are clear about their feelings are more likely to thrive on anxiety and eustress and possibly use these to achieve their goals and find satisfaction at work.

The aim of the study was to determine the role of state and trait anxiety as mediators in the relationship between cognitive restructuring and study skills training with academic achievement. Ninety-four high school students were randomly selected as a sample to receive either a CR or SST psycho-educational group therapy. The mediation analyses indicated that anxiety (state and trait anxiety post-test) could not be considered as significant mediators and this mediation was not a partial mediation. Furthermore, the results revealed that state anxiety follow-up could be considered as a significant mediator and this mediation was a partial mediation. However, trait anxiety follow-up could not be considered as a significant mediator and this mediation was not a partial mediation. However, the present study founded evidence of effects of state anxiety as a mediator on academic achievement. In conclusion, CR and SST were effective treatments for anxiety and academic achievement.

Assuming that effective teachers of the disturbed and maladjusted possess the same characteristics as effective therapists, a research project investigated the relationship between personality attributes and effectiveness in teachers in this area. The Teacher-Pupil Relationship Inventory (TPRI) was used to measure the personality variables of empathic understanding, congruence, level of regard, and unconditionality of regard. A significant gain in academic achievement level was found in those pupils who saw their teachers as possessing a high degree of these attributes.

Background: Although sleep is an important risk factor for suicidal behavior, research has yet to examine the association between sleep problems and suicidality across the course of inpatient treatment. This study examined the relationship among sleep-related symptoms and suicidal ideation across inpatient treatment. Aims: To examine whether poor sleep at admission longitudinally predicts less improvement in suicidal ideation over the course of treatment. Further, to examine whether suicidal ideation is reduced in patients whose sleep does not improve. Method: The study utilized the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI)-II, which contains items measuring depressive symptoms, sleep-related symptoms, and suicidal ideation. The study sample consisted of 1,529 adult psychiatric inpatients. Patients were assessed at admission, biweekly, and at treatment termination. Results: Admission fatigue, loss of energy, and change in sleep pattern were associated with higher levels of suicidal ideation at admission and discharge. Fatigue at admission predicted suicidal ideation at termination independent of admission depression and suicidal ideation. Individuals whose sleep did not improve over the course of treatment had significantly higher suicidal ideation scores at termination relative to those whose sleep symptoms improved, after controlling for sleep, depression, and suicidal ideation scores at admission. Conclusion: These findings suggest that persistence of sleep-related symptoms warrants clinical attention in the treatment of suicidal patients.

SummaryThrombospondin, a trimeric glycoprotein contained in the platelet α-granules, has been proposed as a marker of in vivo platelet activation. However, it is also synthesised by a range of other cells. The extraplatelet contribution to plasma levels of thrombospondin was therefore estimated by investigating the relationship between plasma thrombospondin levels and platelet count in samples from profoundly thrombocytopenic patients with marrow hypoplasia, using the platelet-specific α-granule protein β-thromboglobulin as control. Serum concentrations of both proteins were highly correlated with platelet count, but while plasma β-thromboglobulin levels and platelet count also correlated, there was no relationship between the number of platelets and thrombospondin concentrations in plasma. Serial sampling of patients recovering from bone marrow depression indicated that the plasma thrombospondin contributed by platelets is superimposed on a background concentration of at least 50 ng/ml probably derived from a non-platelet source, and plasma thrombospondin levels do not simply reflect platelet release.
