Exploring Public Response to COVID-19 on Weibo with LDA Topic Modeling and Sentiment Analysis

AbstractIt is necessary and important to understand public responses to crises, including disease outbreaks. Traditionally, surveys have played an essential role in collecting public opinion, while nowadays, with the increasing popularity of social media, mining social media data serves as another popular tool in opinion mining research. To understand the public response to COVID-19 on Weibo, this research collects 719,570 Weibo posts through a web crawler and analyzes the data with text mining techniques, including Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling and sentiment analysis. It is found that, in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, people learn about COVID-19, show their support for frontline warriors, encourage each other spiritually, and, in terms of taking preventive measures, express concerns about economic and life restoration, and so on. Analysis of sentiments and semantic networks further reveals that country media, as well as influential individuals and “self-media,” together contribute to the information spread of positive sentiment.

Purpose – This paper aims to address the following challenge: the push to widen participation in public consultation suggests social media as an additional mechanism through which to engage the public. Bioenergy companies need to build their capacity to communicate in these new media and to monitor the attitudes of the public and opposition organizations towards energy development projects. Design/methodology/approach – This short paper outlines the planning issues bioenergy developments face and the main methods of communication used in the public consultation process in the UK. The potential role of social media in communication with stakeholders is identified. The capacity of sentiment analysis to mine opinions from social media is summarised and illustrated using a sample of tweets containing the term “bioenergy”. Findings – Social media have the potential to improve information flows between stakeholders and developers. Sentiment analysis is a viable methodology, which bioenergy companies should be using to measure public opinion in the consultation process. Preliminary analysis shows promising results. Research limitations/implications – Analysis is preliminary and based on a small dataset. It is intended only to illustrate the potential of sentiment analysis and not to draw general conclusions about the bioenergy sector. Social implications – Social media have the potential to open access to the consultation process and help bioenergy companies to make use of waste for energy developments. Originality/value – Opinion mining, though established in marketing and political analysis, is not yet systematically applied as a planning consultation tool. This is a missed opportunity.


Explosion of Web 2.0 had made different social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, etc a data hub for the task of Data Mining. Sentiment Analysis or Opinion mining is an automated process of understanding an opinion expressed by customers. By using Data mining techniques, sentiment analysis helps in determining the polarity (Positive, Negative & Neutral) of views expressed by the end user. Nowadays there are terabytes of data available related to any topic then it can be advertising, politics and Survey Companies, etc. CSAT (Customer Satisfaction) is the key factor for this survey companies. In this paper, we used topic modeling by incorporating a LDA algorithm for finding the topics related to social media. We have used datasets of 900 records for analysis. By analysis, we found three important topics from Survey/Response dataset, which are Customers, Agents & Product/Services. Results depict the CSAT score according to Positive, Negative and Neutral response. We used topic modeling which is a statistical modeling technique. Topic modeling is a technique for categorization of text documents into different topics. This approach helps in better summarization of data according to the topic identification and depiction of polarity classification of sentiments expressed.

Abstract BackgroundSocial media opinion has become a medium to quickly access large, valuable, and rich details of information on any subject matter within a short period. Twitter being a social microblog site, generate over 330 million tweets monthly across different countries. Analyzing trending topics on Twitter presents opportunities to extract meaningful insight into different opinions on various issues.AimThis study aims to gain insights into the trending yahoo-yahoo topic on Twitter using content analysis of selected historical tweets.MethodologyThe widgets and workflow engine in the Orange Data mining toolbox were employed for all the text mining tasks. 5500 tweets were collected from Twitter using the 'yahoo yahoo' hashtag. The corpus was pre-processed using a pre-trained tweet tokenizer, Valence Aware Dictionary for Sentiment Reasoning (VADER) was used for the sentiment and opinion mining, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) and Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) was used for topic modeling. In contrast, Multidimensional scaling (MDS) was used to visualize the modeled topics. ResultsResults showed that "yahoo" appeared in the corpus 9555 times, 175 unique tweets were returned after duplicate removal. Contrary to expectation, Spain had the highest number of participants tweeting on the 'yahoo yahoo' topic within the period. The result of Vader sentiment analysis returned 35.85%, 24.53%, 15.09%, and 24.53%, negative, neutral, no-zone, and positive sentiment tweets, respectively. The word yahoo was highly representative of the LDA topics 1, 3, 4, 6, and LSI topic 1.ConclusionIt can be concluded that emojis are even more representative of the sentiments in tweets faster than the textual contents. Also, despite popular belief, a significant number of youths regard cybercrime as a detriment to society.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak has resulted in more than six million confirmed cases and more than 371,000 deaths globally on June 1, 2020. The incident sparked a flood of scientific research to help society deal with the virus, both inside and outside the medical domain. Research related to public health analysis and public conversations about the spread of COVID-19 on social media is one of the highlights of researchers in the world. People can analyze information from social media as supporting data about public health. Analyzing public conversations will help the relevant authorities understand public opinion and information gaps between them and the public, helping them develop appropriate emergency response strategies to address existing problems in the community during the pandemic and provide information on the population's emotions in different contexts. However, research related to the analysis of public health and public conversations was so far conducted only through supervised analysis of textual data. In this study, we aim to analyze specifically the sentiment and topic modeling of Indonesian public conversations about the COVID-19 on Twitter using the NLP technique. We applied some methods to analyze the sentiment to obtain the best classification method. In this study, the topic modeling was carried out unsupervised using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). The results of this study reveal that the most frequently discussed topic related to the COVID-19 pandemic is economic issues.

Abstract Opinion mining and sentiment analysis based on social media has been developed these years, especially with the popularity of social media and the development of machine learning. But in the community of nuclear engineering and technology, sentiment analysis is seldom studied, let alone the automatic analysis by using machine learning algorithms. This work concentrates on the public sentiment mining of nuclear energy in German-speaking countries based on the public comments of nuclear news in social media by using the automatic methodology, since compared with the news itself, the comments are closer to the public real opinions. The results showed that majority comments kept in neutral sentiment. 23% of comments were in positive tones, which were approximate 4 times those in negative tones. The concerning issues of the public are the innovative technology development, safety, nuclear waste, accidents and the cost of nuclear power. Decision tree, random forest and long short-term memory networks (LSTM) are adopted for the automatic sentiment analysis. The results show that all of the proposed methods can be applied in practice to some extent. But as a deep learning algorithm, LSTM gets the highest accuracy approximately 85.6% with also the best robustness of all.

Every day billions of data in the form of text flood the internet be it sourced from forums, blogs, social media, or review sites. With the help of sentiment analysis, previously unstructured data can be transformed into more structured data and make this data important information. The data can describe opinions / sentiments from the public, about products, brands, community services, services, politics, or other topics. Sentiment analysis is one of the fields of Natural Language Processing (NLP) that builds systems for recognizing and extracting opinions in text form. At the most basic level, the goal is to get emotions or 'feelings' from a collection of texts or sentences. The field of sentiment analysis, or also called 'opinion mining', always involves some form of data mining process to get the text that will later be carried out the learning process in the mechine learning that will be built. this study conducts a sentimental analysis with data sources from Twitter using the Random Forest algorithm approach, we will measure the evaluation results of the algorithm we use in this study. The accuracy of measurements in this study, around 75%. the model is good enough. but we suggest trying other algorithms in further research. Keywords: sentiment analysis; random forest algorithm; clasification; machine learnings.

AbstractCoronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic-related information are flooded on social media, and analyzing this information from an occupational perspective can help us to understand the social implications of this unprecedented disruption. In this study, using a COVID-19-related dataset collected with the Twitter IDs, we conduct topic and sentiment analysis from the perspective of occupation, by leveraging Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling and Valence Aware Dictionary and sEntiment Reasoning (VADER) model, respectively. The experimental results indicate that there are significant topic preference differences between Twitter users with different occupations. However, occupation-linked affective differences are only partly demonstrated in our study; Twitter users with different income levels have nothing to do with sentiment expression on covid-19-related topics.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the entire world, resulting in a tremendous change to people’s lifestyles. We investigated the Korean public response to COVID-19 vaccines on social media from 23 February 2021 to 22 March 2021. We collected tweets related to COVID-19 vaccines using the Korean words for “coronavirus” and “vaccines” as keywords. A topic analysis was performed to interpret and classify the tweets, and a sentiment analysis was conducted to analyze public emotions displayed within the retrieved tweets. Out of a total of 13,414 tweets, 3509 were analyzed after preprocessing. Eight topics were extracted using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation model, and the most frequently tweeted topic was vaccine hesitation, consisting of fear, flu, safety of vaccination, time course, and degree of symptoms. The sentiment analysis revealed a similar ratio of positive and negative tweets immediately before and after the commencement of vaccinations, but negative tweets were prominent after the increase in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases. The public’s anticipation, disappointment, and fear regarding vaccinations are considered to be reflected in the tweets. However, long-term trend analysis will be needed in the future.

Public participation plays an important role of traffic planning and management, but it is a great challenge to collect and analyze public opinions for traffic problems on a large scale under traditional methods. Traffic management departments should appropriately adopt public opinions in order to formulate scientific and reasonable regulations and policies. At present, while increasing degree of public participation, data collection and processing should be accelerated to make up for the shortcomings of traditional planning. This paper focuses on text analysis using large data with temporal and spatial attributes of social network platform. Web crawler technology is used to obtain traffic-related text in mainstream social platforms. After basic treatment, the emotional tendency of the text is analyzed. Then, based on the probabilistic topic modeling (latent Dirichlet allocation model), the main opinions of the public are extracted, and the spatial and temporal characteristics of the data are summarized. Taking Nanjing Metro as an example, the existing problems are summarized from the public opinions and improvement measures are put forward, which proves the feasibility of providing technical support for public participation in public transport with social media big data.

The efficiency of using social media affected modern society's nature and communication; they are more interested in talking through social media than meeting in the real world. The number of talks on social media content depends on the topic being discussed. The more topic interesting will impact the amount of data on social media will be. The data can be analyzed to get the influence of actors (account mentions) on the conversation. The power of an actor can be measured from how often the actor is mentioned in the conversation. This paper aims to conduct entity profiling on social media content to analyze an actor's influence on discussion. Furthermore, using sentiment analysis can determine the sentiment about an actor from a conversation topic. The Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) method is used for analyzes topic modeling, while the Support Vector Machine (SVM) is used for sentiment analysis. This research can show that topics with positive sentiment are more likely to be involved in disaster management accounts, while topics with negative sentiment are more towards involvement in politicians, critics, and online news.
