Abstract The protists notably ciliates and testate amoebas in the conditions of modernized wastewater treatment plants “Hajdow” (Lublin, Poland) and the nitrogen removal efficiency were studied. Sampling took place every week during the period of August-September 2010. The total of 31 taxa of ciliates and 3 taxa of testate amoebas were identified. Most of the species were registered during the whole research period. Significant abundance reached the following species: Acineria uncinata, Aspidisca cicada, Aspidisca lynceus, Vorticella aquadulcis, Vorticella infusionum, Arcella vulgaris, Euglypha acanthophora and Pyxidicula operculata. In September increase in efficiency of nitrogen removal process was registered. The research shows that the increase of nitrogen reduction efficiency was accompanied by increase of ciliates quantity, mainly due to peritrichid ciliates.

Optimization of wastewater treatment plants with extensive phosphorus and nitrogen removal is complicated. The Klagshamn wastewater treatment plant in Sweden is operated with pre-precipitation of phosphorus with ferric chloride and denitrification with methanol as carbon source. An activated sludge process, operated with pre-precipitation and denitrification with external carbon source in a compartmentalized plant, requires only small tank volumes but increases the need for proper operation and optimization. On-line nitrogen, ammonia, and TOC sensors are used for a day-to-day control and optimization while mathematical modelling is used for long term strategic planning. The on-line measurements are further used as the basis for the modelling. TOC and ammonia sensors at the influent clearly identify typical and extreme loading variations and nitrate measurements in the activated sludge tanks and the effluent shows the dynamics of the processes. These measurements provide a basis for model calibration. In combination low residuals of nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter can be achieved.

Several methods of wastewater treatment systems are implemented but among these methods activated sludge process is demonstrating process in Malaysia. Fortunately, numbers of studies have been conducted to treat and remove either nitrogen or combined phosphorus and nitrogen resulted in enhancement removal of nutrients worldwide. This research aims to study the current operation in Mawar wastewater treatment plant and monitor the reduction of several parameters. The research also examines the new standard limits of effluents. From the result obtained, the monitoring of Mawar wastewater treatment plant indicates that influent concentration of majority of the parameters were in small. Despite that, the removal efficiency of several parameters was not high. That was basically because to the need of proper maintenance activities. Besides, the concentration of measured parameters in the aeration tank inlet were small. Comparison of Mawar wastewater to the typical composition of untreated domestic sewage indicated that the wastewater in Mawar wastewater treatment plant is classified as weak wastewater. The enhancement of nitrogen removal resulted in Mawar wastewater treatment plant led to decrease the removal efficiency of several parameters.

In coordination with the EU-guidelines the large wastewater treatment plants in Switzerland have to be extended with enhanced nitrogen removal. Due to the existing plant configuration, the low COD/N ratio and dilute wastewater, denitrification supported by an external carbon source instead of extending the plant may be an interesting and cost effective solution for municipal wastewater treatment. At the wastewater treatment plant Zürich-Werdhölzli different experiments were performed with methanol addition to predenitrification from March to July 1994. The aim of this work was to evaluate the use of methanol as an alternative to plant extension to achieve a higher nitrogen removal efficiency. Therefore, two parallel denitrifying lanes were investigated, one served for methanol addition experiments and the other as a control. The effect of oxygen input into the anoxic zone due to influent, return sludge and mixing was investigated, too. The results show that nitrogen removal efficiency can be substantially increased as compared to the reference lane. The adaptation period for methanol degradation was only a few days and the process was relatively stable. Based on total nitrogen in the inflow, the average denitrification was 55% with methanol addition and 35% without methanol. The yield coefficient YCOD was 0.4 g CODX g−1 CODMe. Due to the small net growth rate of the methanol degraders the denitrification capacity is relatively low and nitrate peak loads cannot be fully denitrified. Hence, methanol as a carbon source requires more or less constant dosing. To prevent nitrate limitation, methanol addition should be controlled by the anoxic nitrate concentrations.

Abstract:Phosphorus is a major substance that is needed especially for agricultural production or for the industry. At the same time it is an important component of wastewater. At present, the waste management priority is recycling and this requirement is also transferred to wastewater treatment plants. Substances in wastewater can be recovered and utilized. In Europe (in Germany and Austria already legally binding), access to phosphorus-containing sewage treatment is changing. This paper dealt with the issue of phosphorus on the sewage treatment plant in Nitra. There are several industrial areas in Nitra where record major producers in phosphorus production in sewage. The new wastewater treatment plant is built as a mechanicalbiological wastewater treatment plant with simultaneous nitrification and denitrification, sludge regeneration, an anaerobic zone for biological phosphorus removal at the beginning of the process and chemical phosphorus precipitation. The sludge management is anaerobic sludge stabilization with heating and mechanical dewatering of stabilized sludge and gas management. The aim of the work was to document the phosphorus balance in all parts of the wastewater treatment plant - from the inflow of raw water to the outflow of purified water and the production of excess sludge. Balancing quantities in the wastewater treatment plant treatment processes provide information where efficient phosphorus recovery could be possible. The mean daily value of P tot is approximately 122.3 kg/day of these two sources. The mean daily value of P tot is approximately 122.3 kg/day of these two sources. There are also two outflows - drainage of cleaned water to the recipient - the river Nitra - 9.9 kg Ptot/day and Ptot content in sewage sludge - about 120.3 kg Ptot/day - total 130.2 kg Ptot/day.

At Wolfsburg for a load of 100,000 p.e., the step-feed activated sludge process for nitrogen removal is successfully in operation. Due to the high denitrification potential (BOD:TKN = 5:1) the effluent total nitrogen content can be kept below 10 mg l−1 N; furthermore by some enhanced biological phosphate removal about 80% phosphorus may be removed without any chemicals.

The performance of the primary anaerobic pond at the Alsamra Wastewater Treatment Plant in Jordan was monitored over 48 months. Overall averages for the removal efficiencies of BOD5, COD and suspended solids were 53%, 53% and 74%, respectively. An improvement in removal efficiency with increase in pond water temperature was demonstrated. A model, which takes into account the variability of raw wastewater at different locations, has been developed to describe the performance of a primary anaerobic pond in terms of a settleability ratio for the raw wastewater. The model has been verified by illustrating the high correlation between actual and predicted pond performance.
