Abstract In order to determine the impact of improved microbiological preparations of soil on the development of the aboveground biomass of red clover (Parade variety) in the 2012-2013 year, field experiment with cultivation of this species was conducted. Experiment factors were three preparations containing composition of soil microorganisms (trade name: UGmax, Humus Active and Ekoużyźniacz). All study objects were carried out in triplicate. The analysed features were: green and dry matter of plant (kg • m-2), plant height (cm), number of shoots (unit • m-2), share of leaves and stems in biomass (%). The plants were cut three times, and collections of fresh weight were carried out at the beginning of flowering, i.e. when in 30-50% of the plants from plots the flower buds bloomed. The results were statistically analysed using analysis of variance. The study shows that the effects of biopreparations were dependent on the type of preparation and cut. Also, the meteorological conditions during the growing season of each research year were highly significant. The highest values of the analysed parameters were obtained for the plants that were sprayed using aqueous solutions of UGmax and Humus Active. There were no clear effects of soil fertilisers on the biomass structure expressed as the percentage of leaves and stems

Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is one of the most important temperate legume species, used to lessen the lack of forage during the critical fall-winter period in Rio Grande do Sul, RS, Brazil. However, its utilization has been restricted mainly because of its lack of persistence. This work evaluates the dry matter yield and persistence of red clover half-sib progenies in two physiographic regions of RS: "Depressão Central", in Eldorado do Sul and "Encosta Superior do Nordeste", in Veranópolis. Experiments were carried out for two growing seasons and results were compared to two red clover commercial checks, Qüiñequeli and Estanzuela 116. The region of Veranópolis was more adequate for red clover forage production, enabling better yield and persistence. The best check for both locations was cultivar Estanzuela 116. At Eldorado do Sul persistence was highly affected and some progenies were superior to the best check. At Veranópolis the best check was very productive, with good persistence. The best progenies at both locations were selected to be propagated and submitted to additional recurrent selection cycles.

The performance of nine double-cut and three single-cut red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) cultivars was studied at five locations in Atlantic Canada. The single-cut clovers survived relatively well at all locations while the double-cut clovers did not survive well at one location during the first winter. An analysis of data for total dry-matter yield from five environments, i.e., location-year combinations, showed that the single-cut clovers outyielded the double-cut clovers in Newfoundland but yielded lower at the other locations. Among the double-cut cultivars, Florex, Lakeland, Tapiopoly, and Violetta were found to be desirable cultivars because they had a high mean yield and did not yield lower than the population average at any of the five environments. A large cultivar-environment interaction variance was detected for the double-cut cultivars; therefore, at least 15 test environments are required in future trials in order to detect a yield difference of 6% by multiple comparison procedures.Key words: Trifolium pratense L., stability

The objective of this study was to investigate the changes that take place in nutrient values of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) cv K-27 at different stages of growth in the second and the third cut. The samples from different stages of growth: mid-bud stage, around 60% flowering and full flowering were investigated for crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), digestible dry matter (DDM), dry matter intake (DMI), relative feed value (RFV), total digestible nutrients (TDN), net energy-lactation (NEl), net energy-maintenance (NEm) and net energy-gain (NEg) content. Higher content of crude protein was found in the third cut (262.1 g kg-1 of DM) than in the second cut (260.8 g kg-1 of DM) in the first stage of development. TDN, DDM, DMI, RFV, NEl, NEm and NEg were calculated according to the appropriate equations adapted from common formulas for forages. The stage of plant development has a significant influence on the chemical composition and the relative feed value of red clover. The achieved results show that adequate maturity stage for cutting might be at mid-bloom stage, when crude protein content, NEl, NEm and NEg content are high.

In a small-plot trial, grass hybrids Perseus (loloid) and Felina (festucoid) were compared in a mixture with red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) and their reactions to surface application of nitrogen fertilizers or injection into soil according to CULTAN method were investigated. Both fertilizer application methods were used with three levels of nitrogen. Mixtures containing the Felina hybrid had higher yields (12.1 t/ha) compared to the Perseus hybrid (11.0 t/ha), and they also showed higher clover abundance. Increasing dosage of nitrogen resulted in slightly higher yield, whereas the trend in clover abundance was opposite. Nitrogen injection resulted in slightly higher dry matter yields and slightly higher clover abundance as compared to surface fertilization. The N content in the grass-clover mixture was balanced for both types of fertilizer application and did not change significantly with increasing dosage of fertilizer. A slightly higher N content was observed at the Felina hybrid treatments; the dependence of this element on clover abundance in the mixture was set up to 50%.

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of co-inoculation Rhizobium sp. and Azospirillum sp. on plant (Trifolium pratense L.) growth in the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination (anthracene, phenanthrene, and pyrene). Eight strains from the genus Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. trifolii were selected for biotest analysis. Two methods of inoculation were used in the chamber experiment: (1) R. leguminosarum alone and (2) a combined inoculant (R. leguminosarum and Azospirillum brasilense). For comparison, non-contaminated controls were also used. The results demonstrated that co-inoculation of plants with Rhizobium and Azospirillum resulted in more root and shoot biomass than in plants inoculated with R. leguminosarum alone. The results indicated that application of a co-inoculation of bacteria from Rhizobium and Azospirillum species had a positive effect on clover nodulation and growth under the condition of PAH contamination.

Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is the second most important perennial forage legume, after alfalfa. It is a significant source of proteins, which are essential in the diet of domestic animals, especially ruminants. The objective of this study was to determine the most important characteristics of dry matter quality (crude proteins, structural carbohydrates, fats and minerals) in three varieties of red clover (K-17, Kolubara and Una). The characteristics were monitored, per individual cuts, during one production cycle of red clover, i.e., in the period 2004- 2006. Highest contents of crude protein in all three test years were obtained in the second cut. Significantly increased contents of crude proteins (18.32%) and potassium (K-2.53%) were found in the red clover cultivar Una developed in Novi Sad. Significantly increased values of both cellulose fiber fractions (NDF, ADF) were registered in the second year of growing. The highest content of minerals was determined at the beginning of the growing season in the first and second year (8.68% and 8.52%, respectively). Here it should be mentioned that the contents of basic biogenous elements, phosphorus and potassium, were within the expected optimum range.

The conversion of protein nitrogen (PN) to nonprotein nitrogen (NPN) in forages occurs rapidly and extensively during wilting and ensiling. The objectives of this study were to determine whether the amount of time between cutting and ensiling affects protein degradation in red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) silage and to document pre- and post-ensiling characteristics of these two species. Forage from the second (24 August 1993), first (27 May 1994), and second (10 July 1995) growth cycles was harvested with hand clippers to a 5-cm stubble height between 09:00 and 10:00 h on each of the three harvest dates. Herbage was allowed to wilt to a targeted dry matter (DM) content of 350 g kg−1 under 0, 30, 73, and 100% shade (wilting treatment) and ensiled in 100-mL polypropylene centrifuge tubes. Time required to reach the desired DM varied each year, with the greatest range in drying times occurring in 1993. Starch was lower and sugar higher in fresh and wilted red clover than in alfalfa. Fresh red clover contained less NPN than alfalfa in 1993 and 1995 (P < 0.05) and similar amounts in 1994 (P > 0.05). Wilting treatment had no effect on NPN in wilted forage in 1994 and 1995, a result of nearly equal wilting times across shade levels. In 1993, however, NPN increased and starch decreased with shade. Within species, further protein hydrolysis during ensiling resulted in similar NPN levels in silage from all wilting treatments in 1993, despite differences in NPN in pre-ensiled wilted forage. Red clover silage consistently contained less NPN than alfalfa. Wilting treatments did not consistently affect sugar and starch concentrations of silage from either species, although there was a tendency for sugar and starch to decrease with longer wilting periods. Azur is a diploid cultivar of red clover [Trifolium pratense (L.)], which was selected for vigor and growth habit in the year of seeding. In forage trials conducted in Québec, Azur was superior in dry matter yield to check cultivars, particularly in trials harvested in the second production year. In trials in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces, Azur was numerically superior in dry matter yield to the check cultivar, but not significantly so (P < 0.05). Six Trifolium pratense L. cultivars, five diploid and one tetraploid, were grown in the lowland region (123 m altitude) and the mountain region (650 m altitude). Dry matter (d.m.) and green mass (g.m.) yield, stem height and leaf proportion were assessed from each of the three growing seasons. Chemical composition was assessed from the average samples of all cuts in the second year of the experiment. Greater green mass (54.14 t/ha) and dry matter yield (9.86&nbsp;t/ha), stem height (0.61 m), crude protein (157.6 g/kg), crude fiber (222.9 g/kg), crude ash (100.68 g/kg) and crude fat (30.09 g/kg) content were observed in the mountain region, compared to the lowland region (45.61 t/ha g.m. 8.92 t/ha d.m. 0.59 stem height, 156.38 g/kg crude protein, 216.6 g/kg crude fiber, 94.85 g/kg crude ash, 24.98 g/kg crude fat). The greater leaf proportion (47.2%) and nitrogen free extract content (420.13 g/kg) were observed in the lowland region compared to the mountain region (42.95% and 402.99 g/kg, respectively). A significant location &times; cultivar interaction was found for all investigated parameters except for leaf proportion.&nbsp;
