Abstract Stored grains are threatened by several insects, leading to losses in quality and quantity. Several studies have revealed the risks of using chemicals that can cause serious health problems for humans. It is in this perspective that the objective of our work should be seen: It was to assess the effect of the essential oil and leaf powder of Mentha pulegium against Sitophilus oryzae and Tribolium castaneum adults attacking post-harvest cereals. The insecticidal activity of the essential oil against these two insects was evaluated by three methods: contact, inhalation and ingestion. The ingestion method was used in the case of the leaf powder. The essential oil and leaf powder of Mentha pulegium exhibited insecticidal activity against Sitophilus oryzae and Tribolium castaneum adults (Mentha pulegium essential oil caused up to 100% mortality of both insects). Both insects were influenced affected by the dose, exposure time and the method by which the insecticidal activity of the essential oil was demonstrated. Adults of Sitophilus oryzae were more sensitive to different concentrations of essential oil and leaf powder than those of Tribolium castaneum. The essential oil has no effect on the germination rate of soft wheat grains (Triticum aestivum). On the contrary, it acts positively by reducing the damage caused by these major stock pests. The data from this study could present an alternative solution for replacing synthetic insecticides for the protection of stored commodities.

Pulicaria incisa (Lam) is a wild-growing plant in Morocco and has been traditionally used by farmers to control pests of stored grains. The present study was conducted to investigate the chemical composition and insecticidal effect of the essential oil of P. incisa against Sitophilus oryzae (L.) and Tribolium castaneum (Herbst.) by different methods (contact, fumigation and ingestion). The aerial parts of the plant were subjected to hydrodistillation using a Clevenger-type apparatus. The essential oil composition was analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrophotometry (MS). Sixty-six compounds representing 89.4% of total oil were identified. The main components were α-Ocimene (15.17%), τ-Cadinol (6.79%), α-Cadinol (4.51%), Alloaromadendrene (4.45%) δ-Cadinene, (+) - (4.13%). The repellant toxicity test results revealed a higher repellency effect in S. oryzae than T. castaneum. Lethal concentration (LC50), varied between 15.49 - 1.73 μL/cm2 and 20.89 - 2.29 μL/cm2 respectively. In the fumigation test, adults of S. oryzae and T. castaneum were sensitive to the essential oil with LC50 values varying between 16.21 - 2.08 and 18.62 - 2.51 μL/L air. In addition, experiments have shown that the ingestion method is the most toxic towards both insects with LC50 values of the order of 12.59 - 1.51 μL/g for S. oryzae and 14.12 - 2.39 μL/g for T. castaneum. While the lethal time (LT50) values decreased with increasing essential oil concentration, and in all cases, the increased susceptibility of both insects was directly associated with oil concentration and exposure time. This study aims to valorize medicinal and aromatic plants of the Moroccan flora in order to find novel bio-insecticidal products. Furthermore, the study reports for the first time the insecticidal activity of P. incisa against adults S. oryzae and T. castaneum.

Insects pest of stored grains. Impact on food security of Las Tunas municipality, Cuba Resumen Con el objetivo de determinar las especies de insectos plaga en granos almacenados para la obtención de información que contribuyan al manejo de sus poblaciones y minimizar las pérdidas que influyen en la seguridad alimentaria de la población, se realizó un estudio en la Unidad 639 de la Empresa Mayorista de Productos Alimenticios del municipio Las Tunas, Cuba, en el período de enero del año 2011 hasta diciembre del año 2013. En el estudio se colectaron e identificaron 26 especies de insectos plaga en las naves, distribuidas en 19 géneros y 12 familias, pertenecientes a tres órdenes, de ellas, 23 especies cosmopolitas y de amplia distribución en Cuba. Las principales especies de insectos plaga encontradas fueron Tribolium castaneum; Ahasverus advena; Bruchus pisorum; Sitophilus oryzae; Ephestia sp. y Liposcelis sp. El hospedante con mayor frecuencia de aparición de las especies de insectos plaga fue el arroz, seguido por el frijol y el chícharo. Palabras clave: almacenes; cereal; plagas Abstract In order to determine the species of insect pests in stored grains to obtain information that contribute to the management of their populations and minimize losses that influence the food security of the population, a study was carried out in Unit 639 of the Company Wholesaler of Food Products of the municipality Las Tunas, Cuba, in the period from January 2011 until December 2013. The study collected and identified 26 species of insect pests in the ships, distributed in 19 genera and 12 families, belonging to three orders, of which 23 species are cosmopolitan and widely distributed in Cuba. The main species of pest insects found were Tribolium castaneum; Ahasverus advena; Bruchus pisorum; Sitophilus oryzae; Ephestia sp. and Liposcelis sp. The host with the highest frequency of appearance of insect pests was rice, followed by beans and peas. Keywords:  Insect pests; storage; food safety.

Chemical pesticides used against insect pests of stored food have adverse effects on both health and the environment. So, the present study aims to evaluate the insect repulsive and insecticidal power of Ruta chalepensis L. essential oil (EO) from the region of Oulmes (Central plateau of Morocco); the ultimate objective is to develop a biological and ecological control strategy against pests. Thus, the EO obtained by hydrodistillation from the aerial parts of Ruta chalepensis L. was identified by GC-MS; its repellent and fumigant toxicity effects on adults of Tribolium castaneum Herbst were, respectively, investigated by the preferential area method on a filter paper and the inhalation test. The insecticide power was estimated by determining the percentage of mortality as a function of the duration of exposure and concentration of the EO. The essential oil obtained is characterized by the dominance of 2-undecanone (64.35%), piperonyl piperazine (11.9%), 2-decanaone (5.12%), 2-dodecanone (4.52%), decipidone (3.9%,) and 2-tridecanone (2.36%). This EO is endowed with a very repulsive power belonging to class V, which is strongly due to its majority compound 2-undecanone. The dose 0.038 μl/ml gave a repellent power of 100% after 15 min. The tests also revealed a considerable insecticidal effect, which reached 100% after 48 hours at a dose of 0.62 μl/ml. The calculation of the lethal dose causing 50% mortality (LD50) and the lethal times after which there is 50% mortality (LT50) allowed deducing that the insecticidal effect of Ruta chalepensis L. is time- and dose-dependent. Hence, the effectiveness of Ruta chalepensis L. EO attests that it can constitute a healthy alternative to fight against Tribolium castaneum Herbst.

Plants with insecticidal effect are among the alternatives as a tool to control the insect-pest of stored grains. The objective of this study was to characterize the efficiency of plant-based powders on Sitophiluszeamaisinsects in stored grains. Usingfourteenplant species (Arnica montana Baccharistrimera,Coriandrum sativum,Coffea arabica,Cymbopogon martini,Helianthus annuus, Lippia gracillis,Mentha pulegium,Moringa oleífera,Nicotiana tabacum,Piper aduncum, Piper hispidinervum,Sesamum indicumandVitis labrusca)obtained from tritured vegetable material, and compared with a control treatment. The experiment carried out in a completely randomized design, with six replicates each treatment. In the tests, 0.5 g of the inert powders mixed into the grains (50 g) of hybrid corn AS 1551 into plastic vials and infested with 10emerged adultofS. zeamais. After 20 days of infestation, oviposition evaluated and counts of emerged adults. At the end of the infestation period, evaluated the dry weight of the insects, the weight of grains consumed and the period of development (egg-adult). Most of the vegetal powders presented effective action on the emerged insects. By the use of the powders,it verified reduction in the ooposition, except for Vitis labruscaand Sesamum indicumwhose egg numbers were higher than control, also had less effect on the development of caruncho larvae. The low weight of adults from corn kernels treated with Nicotiana tabacumpowder is relatedreduction in feeding of S. zeamaislarvae.

Essential oils of plants with insecticidal properties have been considered as replacements for synthetic chemical pesticides to combat and control insect pests. The chemical composition of the essential oil from dried seeds of Zanthoxylum limonella Alston was determined by the Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometry technique. Insecticidal activity was investigated on Tribolium castaneum Herbst using impregnated filter paper with six concentrations of essential oil at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5% for adults and larvae mortality tests, and 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10% for egg mortality. All experiments were performed under completely randomized design (CRD) with four replications at 30±5°C and 70±5% relative humidity in 16:8 hours light/dark cycle. A total of 83 components were identified. The principal compounds in the essential oil of Z. limonella were beta-pinene (19.65%), 9-octadecanone (18.80%), D-limonene (9.76%), alpha-fenchene (8.48%), p-mentha-1,5,8-triene (7.16%), 1,8-cineole (6.88%), gamma-terpinene (5.46%), terpinen-4-ol (3.81%), linalool (2.73%), alpha-thujene (1.34%), decanal (1.32%), alpha-phellandrene (1.20%) and linalyl propionate (1.13%). Insecticidal activity presented that 5% of essential oil had the highest effect against T. castaneum at 120 h for adults and 48 h for larvae, while 10% of essential oil at 14 days obtained 100% mortality against eggs of T. castaneum. Results indicated that the essential oil of Z. limonella from dried seeds showed potential for use in the control of T. castaneum

The chemical composition and antibacterial, insecticidal, and antioxidant properties of the essential oil from Mentha pulegium L. (M. pulegium) growing in Morocco were investigated in this work. To achieve this goal, the oils were obtained by using hydrodistillation before being characterized by GC-MS. The antibacterial and antifungal activities were conducted against pathogenic strains using the disc diffusion and MICS bioassays. The insecticidal activity was carried out versus C. maculatus using contact and inhalation tests. The antioxidant activity was performed by using DPPH and total antioxidant capacity bioassays. The chemical analysis of the oil showed that 20 compounds were identified, which represented 98.91% of the total oil. In the oil, the main components detected were R-(+)-pulegone (76.35%), carvone (5.84%), dihydrocarvone (5.09%), and octanol-3 (2.25%). The essential oil has moderate-to-strong broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal properties; the results showed that B. subtilis was the most sensitive strain to M. pulegium oil, with the largest inhibition diameter (25 ± 0.33). For the antifungal activity, the results obtained indicated that Aspergillus niger was the most sensitive fungal strain to M. pulegium oil with an inhibition percentage up to 100%. Regarding the insecticidal activity, the inhalation test showed a high efficacy (100% mortality), and a lethal concentration of LC50 = 1.41 + 0.48 μL/L air was obtained after 24 hours of exposure. Moreover, the contact test showed that a total reduction in fertility and emergence was obtained with a dose of 20 μL/mL of acetone. Regarding the antioxidant activity, the sample concentration necessary to inhibit 50% of HE radicals (IC50) was 7.659 mg/mL (DPPH) and 583.066 57.05 mg EAA/g EO (TAC).
