Abstract The parking problem is a severe challenge in city planning because of its impact on road congestion and accidents, delay time, and cities’ economy. therefore, many cities conducted different studies, reports, and projects to find the number of parking generation as it related to land use, in form equations, rates, and even data plots by using different independent variables. Iraq, till now, does not have a comprehensive study of parking requirements, or in specific how many parking spaces the different land uses are generated or needed. The general situation in Baghdad city at present is inadequate public transportation, few transportation alternatives, large private car use. besides the high illegal parking on the roads which means higher traffic density and congestion roads. this research studies three different shopping centers in Baghdad and analysis their parking generation as related to three different independent variables. these variables are GFA, GLA, and entertainment percentage where each variable is analyzed separately. the analysis was done based on parking accumulation in these sites. as it was counted manually for three days for Parking counting time that selected according to the peak of visitors for Retail is from 4 pm – 11 pm. in a result several parking generation rates and models with different forms are developed by using simple linear regression and only the best of them that has high R2 value and low RMSE is recommended. from the conclusion, the GFA and GLA have the most significant effect on parking generation as they developed strong models and rates. as these rates are 4.1 and 4.57 parking spaces for each 100 m2 of GFA and GLA respectively.

The growth of air transportation gives negative impact in its ground access system in which the flow of people who accessing the airport creates road congestion. This problem is also supported with the highly dependence of people on private car use and leave public transport as unattractive mode to be used in accessing the airport. This research attempts to find out which travel attributes of transportation mode that influence the mode choice of people who accessing the airport as the ground access users. Taking one case study at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia, the data are collected from this airport through survey process. Further, the statistical methods are conducted to get the results. Six determined travel attributes; cost, travel time, walking distance, ease of transfer, ease of carrying luggage and comfort, significantly influence and give differences on the user’s mode choice in which four of them; walking distance, ease of transfer, ease of carrying luggage and comfort, are being perceived very satisfactory for car. The research concludes with potential steps in improving public transportation which give access to the airport that might help attract more people to use it and increase its mode share.

Abstract The Poblenou Superblock, in Barcelona, is a crucial element in the development of the new city-planning within the framework of the Superblock (Superilles) concept, whose principal aim is to recover the cultural, economic and social exchanges once produced in streets and squares. People living in urban areas need a lower traffic density, more green spaces and cleaner air in order to restore the previous uses of public spaces in their day-today lives. The urban actions conducted at this Superblock to change its uses were completed about 3 years ago, and neighbours and workers have already taken over the new spaces. In an interdisciplinary work on urban planning and acoustics, we detail the preliminary results of the acoustic events found in the recordings in a soundwalk in the heart of the Poblenou Superblock. Fifteen people evaluate and record sound fragments with the Hush City App application, in order to establish comparisons between the different points of the route, observe the spaces arranged for people and perceive the soundscape. Meanwhile, several acoustic technicians record 5-min long audios in the different stops designed for the soundwalk. The points chosen to make the recordings are very different from each other, some of them in the middle of gardens and others are on pacific streets and finally, we also wanted to include Superblock borders where the traffic is still very present. The results of our study were promising and have encouraged us to further investigate acoustics events in superblocks and include all the perceptual information provided by the Hush City App.

With urban populations on the rise, sustainable design of cities will be necessary to maintain reasonable quality of life for its inhabitants. Space to accommodate citizens in these densely populated cities will be in short supply and high demand. Strategic shifts in the transportation industry can alleviate the lack of space for residential and commercial facilities in densely populated areas. One opportunity to mitigate this growing problem is to reduce the size of personally owned, commuter vehicles. Smaller vehicles will reduce the storage space and increase the density of vehicles on roads. Another solution gaining traction in the automotive industry today are autonomous vehicles. Autonomous technology can allow cars to travels closer to one another without increasing the likelihood of a crash. Lastly, changing the market from personally owned vehicles to fleets owned by the company to be used as public transportation would reduce the traffic density. These changes to the automotive industry will facilitate a change in the layout and packaging of commercial vehicles to meet new objectives. This paper proposes a novel corner module design that meets the market’s needs for mass production of X-by-wire systems integrated into a compact space while maintaining current levels of vehicle stability, handling and ride comfort. The proposed corner module features an in-wheel motor with electronic steering and braking. To increase the handling of the vehicle, the corner module has active camber control and can be modified for active ride height adjustment. Furthermore, the simplicity and minimal quantity of the components makes the corner module design ready for mass production. The geometry of the purposed corner module was optimized using a genetic algorithm. The objectives were to target a wheel lateral displacement of 10 cm at the −15° of camber angle and to minimize the longitudinal displacement of the wheel in a steer range of −20° to 20° at 0° of camber angle. The optimization had three types of constraints: packaging space limits, component interference and cylinder size. The optimization successfully found a solution that met both objectives while remaining within the constraints. The workspace of the wheel was limited by the rear cylinder size and the fixed length of the linkage.

The electric bicycle is considered as an environmentally friendly mode, the market share of which is growing fast worldwide. Even in metropolitan areas which have a well-developed public transportation system, the usage of electric bicycles continues to grow. Compared with bicycles, the power transferred from the battery enables users to ride faster and have long-distance trips. However, research on electric bicycle travel behavior is inadequate. This paper proposes a cumulative prospect theory (CPT) framework to describe electric bicycle users’ mode choice behavior. Different from the long-standing use of utility theory, CPT considers travelers’ inconsistent risk attitudes. Six socioeconomic characteristics are chosen to discriminate conservative and adventurous electric bicycle users. Then, a CPT model is established which includes two parts: travel time and travel cost. We calculate the comprehensive cumulative prospect value (CPV) for four transportation modes (electric bicycle, bus, subway and private car) to predict electric bicycle users’ mode choice preference under different travel distance ranges. The model is further validated via survey data.

The book concludes with an examination of the relocation of department stores to suburban shopping centers and the Sears, Roebuck, and Company affirmative action cases. Mass suburbanization, the rise of discount retailers such as Kmart and Wal-Mart, and urban decay transformed department stores. Black workers found that the gains they had made in downtown department stores had virtually disappeared as department stores followed their preferred clientele—the white middle class—to the suburbs. Here, stores were able to return to their former racial practices in spaces that were inaccessible via public transportation, deemed private property, and prohibited civil rights demonstrations. The Sears cases thus reveal the ways that the department store movement modified its tactics, approaches, and strategies. These cases also exposed the industry’s ongoing transformations, ones that revolutionized, or rather diminished, the status of retail work and department stores, and facilitated the reconsolidation of racial discrimination.

This chapter presents a study on the transportation mode choice behaviour of individuals with different socio-economic status. A previously developed system dynamics model has been adopted by differentiating the population mass into upper, middle, and lower classes. The simulation experiments with the model revealed that generally the upper class individuals would be more inclined to use a private car (PC) instead of public transportation (PT) when their tendency is compared to middle and lower class individuals. It was also observed that lower class individuals would be more willing to use PT instead of PC when their tendency is compared to middle and upper class individuals. As such, it would be difficult to encourage the upper class individuals to use PT instead of PC, and it would be successively easier to do so in the case of middle and lower class individuals. However, the results also indicated that under certain different circumstances, the upper class individuals would also prefer to go for PT, and the lower class ones could prefer to own and use PC instead of PT.

Mexico City’s subway, commonly known as “el Metro,” opened its first line of service on September 4, 1969. Since then, the mass transit system, operated by the Sistema de Transporte Colectivo (STC), has expanded to include 195 stations across twelve lines that serve an estimated five and a half million riders per day. The metro was constructed not only to alleviate severe traffic congestion in the city’s center due to population growth and private car use, but also it was envisioned as part of a plan to modernize the city and raise Mexico to the status of world cities such as Paris and Montreal. The low fare has made it one of the primary modes of transportation for the city’s working class, who use it in combination with other forms of public transportation to reach jobs in distant parts of the metropolis. Some studies have shown that the Metro has exacerbated geographic segregation between rich and poor as well as perpetuated low wages. Beyond its function as a mass transit system, the Metro was envisioned as and still serves as an important cultural space. The graphic designers and architects who led the project integrated modern architectural elements with graphic embellishments and signage that incorporated national culture and history to present a modernity uniquely Mexican. In its almost fifty years of service, the Metro has become an important symbol of the capital’s cultural life that everyday Mexicans have used for their own political, economic, and cultural purposes.
