ABSTRACT<br />Shifting of upland rice cultivation to marginal land faces drought stress, while planting under young plantation faces shading stress. There should be lines or varieties with good agronomic character and tolerant to the shading stress. Lines used in this experiment were obtained  from anther culture, i.e., III3-4-6-1, I5-10-1-1, WI-44, GI-7, O18-b-1, IW-67, IG-19, IG-38, IW-56, B13-2-e. Two experiments were conducted, i.e., agronomic performance experiment and shading tolerance experiment with a quick test method at seedling phase. Batutegi and Way Rarem were used as check varieties in the agronomic experiment. In shading tolerance experiment, Kalimutu was used as sensitive check and Jatiluhur was tolerant check varieties. The results of experiment indicated that B13-2-e (4.64 ton ha-1) and WI-44 line (4.05 ton ha-1) dihaploid lines showed high grain yield and comparable to Way Rarem (4.95 ton ha-1). B13-2-e and WI-44 lines were tolerant to shading. Another tolerant lines to shading, i.e., I5-10-1-1, O18-b-1, and IW-56. B13-2-e and WI-44 lines were recommended to advanced verification on multiple cropping system.<br />Keywords: dry land, multiple cropping

Peningkatan produksi padi lahan kering dapat dilakukan dengan sistem tumpang sari dan pemanfaatan asap cair tempurung  kelapa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh tumpangsari padi gogo-rumput dengan aplikasi asap cair tempurung kelapa terhadap karakter pertumbuhan, fisiologis, dan hasil padi gogo serta tingkat serangan hama dan patogen pada kondisi kekeringan. Penelitian menggunakan rancangan petak petak terbagi dengan tiga ulangan. Petak utama terdiri atas varietas padi gogo; Situ Bagendit, Inpago Unsoed 1 dan Situ Patenggang. Anak petak merupakan konsentrasi asap cair tempurung kelapa yaitu tanpa aplikasi, konsentrasi 1:100 dan konsentrasi 1:200. Anak-anak petak terdiri atas tanpa rumput, rumput gajah, sereh dan rumput gajah+sereh. Variabel yang diamati meliputi tinggi tanaman, jumlah dan luas daun, jumlah anakan, kandungan prolin, kadar klorofil a dan b, jumlah gabah isi, bobot gabah petak efektif, bobot gabah ha-1, indeks panen, serta intensitas serangan hama dan patogen. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa padi gogo yang ditanam pada kondisi kekeringan dengan penanaman rumput dan aplikasi asap cair tempurung kelapa belum mampu menghasilkan produksi yang optimal. Tumpangsari padi gogo-sereh lebih memberikan dampak terhadap karakter pertumbuhan dan hasil padi gogo dibandingkan dengan aplikasi asap cair tempurung kelapa. Secara umum, hasil padi gogo < 1 t ha-1, namun varietas Situ Patenggang menunjukan hasil lebih baik dibandingkan varietas lainnya. Intensitas serangan walang sangit lebih rendah pada sistem tumpangsari padi gogo varietas Situ Patenggang-sereh. ABSTRACTRice production in the upland can be increased by multiple cropping system and coconut shell wood vinegar application. The objectives of this study was to know the effects of intercropped rice–grass with application of coconut shell wood vinegar on characters of growth, physiological, and yield of upland rice as well as intensity of pest and disease under drought condition. Split split plot design with main plot of upland rice varieties i.e. Situ Bagendit, Inpago Unsoed 1 and Situ Patenggang, sub plot consist of coconut shell wood vinegar concentration i.e. 0, 1:100 and 1:200, sub sub-plot of rice–grass intercropped i.e. no grass, Pennisetum purpureum, lemongrass and Pennisetum purpureum+lemongrass were tested with three replications. Observed variables were plant height, leaf number, leaf area, number of tillers, contents of proline, chlorophyll a and b, weight of grain in effective plot, weight of grain ha-1, harvest index and intensity of pest and disease. The results showed that rice-grass intercropped and application of coconut shell wood vinegar in drought condition has not been able to produce the optimal production. Under drought condition, intercropped rice-grass had significantly impact on the character of growth and yield of the upland rice. Generally, all upland rice varieties gained low yield (<1 t ha-1), but Situ Patenggang variety showed higher yield than other varieties and low intensity of brownhopper attack as well as in rice-lemongrass intercropped.

Abstract. Ndiwa ASS, Mau YS. 2019. Yield and yield component performances of local pigmented upland rice cultivars from East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia in three locations. Trop Drylands 3: 49-55. Several pigmented upland rice cultivars from East Nusa Tenggara Province have been selected based on their agronomic performance, blast resistance, and drought tolerance traits. This study aimed to further elucidate the selected upland rice cultivars for their yield performance and stability in a multi-location trial in three locations. The results showed the significant effect of rice genotype, location, and interactions between rice genotype and location (GxE) on most observed variables, both in each location and across the three locations. Five genotypes produced average grain yield of ≥ 4.0 t/ha over three locations, i.e., NGR-22, PMK-01, ADN-05, Inpago 7 and Aek Sibundong. These five genotypes were found to produce high and stable grain yield under the three growing environments.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the response of different doses and sources of nitrogen (N) on agronomic characteristics in upland riceas well astheclimaticand environmentalinfluence on nitrogen fertilization results. Theexperiments were conducted in the University of Lavras, during 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 crop seasons, the plots consisted of 4 lines of 3 linear meters, with spacing among rows of 35 cm and a useful plot of 4.2 m2. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with three replications in a 4x4x 2factorial design. The factor doseconsisted in 0, 50,100 e 200 kg ha-1N and the factor sourcesconsisted in ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulphate, urea and polycote, totaling 16 treatments. The characteristics evaluatedwere plant height, grain yield, grain chalkness, 1000 grainsweight andyield. It was concluded that the addiction of doses and Nsources didnot change the agronomic performanceof the upland rice crop. There is an influence of the environment on the responses of plants to nitrogen application, being observed different results in different cropseasons.

The shortage of land resources restricts the sustainable development of agricultural production. Multiple cropping has been widely used in Southern China, but whether the continuous planting will cause a decline in soil quality and crop yield is unclear. To test whether multiple cropping could increase grain yield, we investigated the farmlands with different cultivation years (10–20 years, 20–40 years, and &gt;40 years). Results showed that tobacco-rice multiple cropping rotation significantly increased soil pH, nitrogen nutrient content, and grain yield, and it increased the richness of the bacterial community. The farmland with 20–40 years of cultivation has the highest soil organic carbon (SOC), ammonium nitrogen, and grain yield, but there is no significant difference in the diversity and structure of the bacterial community in farmlands with different cultivation years. The molecular ecological network indicated that the stability of the bacterial community decreased across the cultivation years, which may result in a decline of farmland yields in multiple cropping system&gt; 40 years. The Acidobacteria members as the keystone taxa (Zi ≥ 2.5 or Pi ≥ 0.62) appeared in the tobacco-rice multiple cropping rotation farmlands, and the highest abundance of Acidobacteria was found in the farmland with the highest SOC and ammonium nitrogen content, suggesting Acidobacteria Gp4, GP7, GP12, and GP17 are important taxa involved in the soil carbon and nitrogen cycle. Therefore, in this study, the multiple cropping systems for 20 years will not reduce the crop production potential, but they cannot last for more than 40 years. This study provides insights for ensuring soil quality and enhancing sustainable agricultural production capacity.

Upland rice-based cropping pattern is a form of multiple cropping including intercropping, sequential planting, and relay planting where upland rice as a base crop can be preceded and/or rotated with other food crops as a secondary crop. The research was aimed to provide recommendations for upland rice-based cropping pattern technology in dryland agroecosystems in Maluku that would be able to increase land productivity > 1.00 (MCI = Multiple Cropping Index > 100%) compared to existing cropping patterns. The study used a Randomized Block Design (RCBD) with four treatments and repeated five times (farmers as replications). Four treatments for upland rice-based planting pattern technology assemblies, namely: 1) Pattern-A (Farmer A Pattern); 2) Pattern-B (Farmer B Planting Pattern B); 3) Pattern C (Farmer Improvement Cropping Pattern); and 4) Pattern D (Introduced Plant Pattern). The results showed that upland rice was planted double (multiple cropping) through intercropping and/or sequential cropping, namely Improved Cropping Patterns (Pattern C = Upland Rice + Corn - Peanuts) and Introducing Cropping Patterns (Pattern D = Upland Rice + Corn/Cassava - Green Beans - Peanuts) can increase land productivity with a double-cropping index 1.35 - 1.80 (IPG = 135% - 180%) compared to upland rice grown in monoculture (Farming Patterns). Multiple cropping (Upland Rice + Corn/Cassava - Green Beans - Peanuts) can be recommended as Upland Rice-Based Planting Technology Package on dry land in Maluku, because it can increase land productivity> 1.00 with an MCI (Multiple Cropping Index) of 180%. Keywords: dry land, performance, upland rice   ABSTRAK Pola Tanam berbasis padi gogo merupakan bentuk pola bertanam ganda meliputi tumpangsari, tumpang gilir (runtun) dan tanaman sisipan dimana padi gogo sebagai komoditi pokok (base crop) yang bisa didahului dan atau digilir dengan tanaman pangan lainnya sebagai komoditi ikutan (secondary crop). Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendapatan rekomendasi paket teknologi pola tanam berbasis padi gogo pada agroekosistem lahan kering di Maluku yang mampu meningkatan produktivitas lahan > 1.00 (IPG = Indeks Pertanaman Ganda >100 %) dibandingkan dengan pola tanam petani eksisting. Penelitian menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok (RAK) dengan empat macam perlakuan dan diulang lima kali (petani sebagai ulangan). Empat perlakukan rakitan teknologi pola tanam berbasis padi gogo, yaitu: 1) Pola-A (Pola Tanam Petani A); 2) Pola-B (Pola Tanam Petani B); 3) Pola C (Pola Tanam Petani Perbaikan); dan 4) Pola D (Pola Tanaman Introduksi). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa padi gogo ditanam secara ganda (multiple cropping) melalui tumpangsari dan atau tumpanggilir, yaitu Pola Tanam Petani Perbaikan (Pola C = Padi Gogo + Jagung - Kacang Tanah) dan Pola Tanam Introduksi (Pola D = Padi Gogo + Jagung/Ubikayu - Kacang Hijau - Kacang Tanah) dapat meningkatkan produktivitas lahan 1.35 – 1.80 (IPG = 135% - 180%) dibandingkan jika padi gogo ditanam secara monokultur (Pola Tanam Petani). Pola bertanam ganda (Padi Gogo+Jagung/Ubikayu - Kacang Hijau - Kacang Tanah) dapat direkomendasikan sebagai Paket Teknologi Pola Tanam Berbasis Padi Gogo pada lahan kering di Maluku, karena dapat meningkatkan produktivitas lahan >1.00 dengan nilai IPG (Indeks Pertanaman Ganda) 180%. Behavioural assessment of cultivars adapted to climate and soil variations is essential for recommending genetic materials to producers, achieving higher profitability, and, mainly, targeting regional growth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the agronomic performance of upland rice cultivars in different cropping periods and Cerrado vegetation soil in the southern region of the state of Tocantins. The experiments were conducted in a field at the Chaparral Farm and at the Experimental Station of the Federal University of Tocantins in the agricultural years of 2008/2009, 2009/2010, 2010/2011, 2011/2012, and 2012/2013 with cultivars BRS-Bonança, BRS-Primavera, and BRSMG-Conai. A randomized block experimental design was used with four replications in a factorial scheme of 3 × 5, comprising three genotypes and five years. The evaluated characteristics were as follows: number of days to flowering, plant height, weight of hundred grains, and grain yield. The highest upland rice yield was observed in the cropping period of 2012/13, which also had the highest volume and better distribution of rainfall; flowering time was lesser and greater for BRSMG-Conai and BRS-Bonança cultivars, respectively. The BRS-Primavera cultivar showed the highest grain yield in different years in Cerrado soil in the southern region of the state of Tocantins.

Against the background of a growing world population, rice (Oryza sativa L.) consumption is expected to grow faster than its production. Therefore, an appropriate question would be: how to increase productivity in the short-term? In this respect, it becomes important the implementation of modern agricultural production systems, such as upland rice with supplemental sprinkler irrigation. Additional information is needed to maximize the available resources, with special attention given to research on the use of nitrogen. This study aimed to evaluate the agronomic performance of commercial rice cultivars with different plant characteristics in upland conditions with supplemental sprinkler irrigation, when subjected to nitrogen in topdress application at the R1 stage (panicle differentiation). The experiment was arranged in a randomized block with split plot design, with 65 treatments, consisting of the combination of 13 cultivars in the plots, and five nitrogen levels in the subplots (0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 kg ha-1), with four replications. Genetic variability was detected among rice cultivars and the agronomic performance in response to the applied nitrogen. The topdressing application of nitrogen increases, in general, the production components and grain yield in rice. Cultivars BRS Primavera, Caiapó and IAC 202 stood out for grain yield, followed by Baldo, Carnaroli, BRS Curinga and IAC 500 with lower yields.
