Tidal swamp lands are marginal lands with considerable potentials for rice farming. The key solution to overcome swampy lands constraints are nutrient and water managements as well as the use of adaptive rice varieties. Inpara (inbred swampy land rices) varieties have been released by the Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development (IAARD) which are adaptive to swampy land conditions. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the adaptability of Inpara varieties in tidal swamp lands with type B overflow. The field experiment was carried out in Karang Bunga village, Barito Kuala District, South Kalimantan Province, in the dry season from April to August 2016. The research was arranged in randomized complete block design, with 3 replicates. The varieties tested, i.e., Inpara 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and check varieties Margasari, Ciherang, and Mekongga. The results showed that the adaptability varied among varieties tested. Inpara 3, 4, 6, 8, and 9 had high yield and good adaptation on tidal swamp land yielded 3.475-4.299 ton ha-1. These varieties produced between 38.5 to 71.3% higher than Margasari and 51.4 to 87.2% higher than Mekongga. Inpara 3, 4, 6, 8, and 9 could be used as a main varieties in the tidal swamp lands.

Keywords: rice, swampy land, variety

An experiment was conducted to evaluate effect of urea fertilizer on yield and yield components of Zea mays L. Using Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) split plots in three replications in agricultural research farm of Balkh University by 2019. Doses of urea used in this experiment were 0, 80, 160 and 240 kg ha-1 , respectively. It has been found that amount of nitrogen fertilizer (urea) had significant effect on yield of maize at p<0.05. The higher level of nitrogen caused the higher grain yield, number of kernels per ear, the number of grains per ear row, ear diameter, cob length, grain per plant and plant height. As a result 7.76 ton ha-1 was recorded as high yield while 240 kg ha-1 urea was used, and 5.12 ton ha-1 was recorded as low yield in treatment one with 0 kg ha-1 of nitrogen fertilizer. Finally, as a result using 240 kg ha-1 nitrogen fertilizer is recommended.

Reduced productive rice fields to non-paddy fields, most possible extension of the nationalrice cultivation area to the suboptimal lands reaching ± 91.9 million ha. Technologypackages that can be applied include the use of new improved rice varieties through theassembling of varieties that have high yield potential, resistant to suboptimal soil stress. Theobjective of the research is to produce new superior rice varieties that are available invarious environments. The study used a split-plot design, as the main plot is an environmentconsisting of rice paddies and gogo, as a subplot is the genotype of rice. The treatment ineach environment is prepared using the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Thetreatment consisted of 10 new rice strains and four varieties as a comparison. Variablesobserved (1) plant height; (2) the maximum number of shoots; (3) number of productiveshoots; (4) long panicle; (5) the number of grains per panicle; (6) the amount of graincontent of each panicle; (7) the number of empty grains per panicle; (8) weight of 1000grains of grain; (9) grain yield of each clump; (10) grain yield per hectare. Data wereanalyzed by variance if there was a difference between mean, median treatment, followed byLsd test at 5% level. The adaptability and yield stability of each strain was determined basedon the value of the coefficient of diversity (KK) (Francis and Kenneberg, 1978) in Syukur etal., (2012). The results showed that seven new rice strains had adaptations both planted asupland rice and lowland rice, namely strains B3, B4, F2, F3, H1, H4, and L2.

In Southern India, drought stress is a major constraint to chickpea production and yield stability. Drought tolerant index (DTI) that provides a measure of drought based on yield loss under drought condition in comparison to normal condition was used for screening drought-tolerant genotypes. This study was conducted to determine drought tolerant genotypes with high yield in stress and non-stress conditions utilising physiological traits. Thirty chickpea genotypes were tested in a randomized complete block design with three replications under rain fed and irrigated conditions at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Nandyal, Andhra Pradesh, India during rabi, 2018-2019. The analysis of variance carried out for yield and drought tolerant traits revealed highly significant differences among the genotypes for all characters under rain fed as well as irrigated conditions. NBeG 776, NBeG 779, NBeG 868, ICCV 181606, MH 13 and MH 14 are drought tolerant. NBeG 776, NBeG 779 and NBeG 868 are suitable under both rain fed and irrigated conditions with significantly higher yields over their respective means. ICCV 181606, MH 13 and MH 14 are suitable exclusively for rain fed condition with significantly superior yields over the mean.

Phosphorus is one macronutrient that commonly gets fixed and accumulates into soils after it has been in use for long, thus becoming readily unavailable to plants in subsequent years. Such scenario is ontological in Mwea where rice farming is practiced, yet this element is one main critical nutrient that plants cannot do without for they need it for root initiation, root development, photosynthesis, grain- formation, grain-filling, as well as yielding. In that view therefore, an experiment was undertaken in Mwea irrigation scheme with the aim of investigating on the influence of phosphorus levels on yield components and grain yield of Nerica 4 and 11. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design in split-plot arrangement replicated thrice. Two rice varieties (Nerica 4 and Nerica 11) formed main plots and phosphorus levels (0 kg P/ha, 25 kg P/ha, 50 kg P/ha and 75 kg P/ha) formed split plots. Data was collected on appropriate parameters between week 4 and 19 after sowing at intervals of three weeks. Results demonstrated that phosphorus levels significantly influenced the 1000-grain weight and number of panicles in the tested varieties. Additionally, Grain yield mean variation was observed, where highest grain yield of 0.988 tons per hectare was produced in Nerica 4 on 50 kg P/ha in season 2, while least grain yield of 0.831 tons per hectare was still produced in the same variety on control in season 1, thus 50 kg P/ha on Nerica 4 is recommended for rice farming in Mwea. The study would be used as a body of guidelines and information for judicial, responsible, and promotion of prescribed application of phosphates in Nerica rice farming at planting for realization of higher yields between the two Nerica varieties (Nerica 4 and 11) in Mwea and with like agro ecological areas.

Abstract Rice is the staple food for millions of people of Indonesia which produced from many agroecology including tidal-swamp. The contribution of swampland to the national rice production is still lower than 2%. One of the indigenous knowledge of the tidal-swamp farmers is the massive use of local varieties which have low yield. Therefore, efforts to increase rice production in tidal-swampland of Barito Kuala Regency should consider the use of superior varieties. The purpose of this study was to find out performance of seven superior varieties in tidal-swamp land in two planting seasons. This research was conducted from March 2020 to March 2021 in Karang Buah Village of Belawang District of Barito Kuala Regency, South Kalimantan Province. The research was arranged in two factors of Randomized Complete Block Design namely varieties and seasons. The first factor consisted of seven varieties: Inpari-42 (V1), Inpari-43 (V2), Inpari IR Nutri Zinc (V3), Inpara-8 (V4), Inpara-9 (V5), Inpara-10 (V6), and IR-42 (V7). The second factor, season consisted of season-1 which started from March to July 2020 and season-2 for planting period from November 2020 to March 2021. The result showed that swamp rice varieties had higher value for plant height variables than those of irrigated rice varieties with Inpari-8 as the highest one. However, all irrigated rice varieties performed better which had higher value for panicle number, filled rice grain, and yield with IR-42 as the highest one. All varieties except IR-42 showed higher values of filled grain numbers when cultivated in season-1 supported by good weather during the study.

Optimal plant density is required to improve plant phenological traits and maximize seed yield in field crops. In this study, we determined the effect of plant density on duration of flowering, post-flowering phase, and seed yield of canola in diverse environments. The field study was conducted at 16 site-years across the major canola growing area of western Canada from 2010 to 2012. The cultivar InVigor® 5440, a glufosinate-resistant hybrid, was grown at five plant densities (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 plants m−2) in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Canola seed yield had a linear relationship with plant density at 8 of the 16 site-years, a quadratic relationship at 4 site-years, and there was no correlation between the two variables in the remaining 4 site-years. At site-years with low to medium productivity, canola seed yield increased by 10.2 to 14.7 kg ha−1 for every additional plant per square metre. Averaged across the 16 diverse environments, canola plants spent an average of 22% of their life cycle flowering and another 27% of the time filling seed post-flowering. Canola seed yield had a negative association with duration of flowering and a positive association with the days post-flowering but was not associated with number of days to maturity. The post-flowering period was 12.7, 14.7, and 12.6 d (or 55, 68, and 58%) longer in high-yield experiments than in low-yield experiments in 2010, 2011, and 2012, respectively. We conclude that optimization of plant density for canola seed yield varies with environment and that a longer post-flowering period is critical for increasing canola yield in western Canada.

A field experiment was conducted at Regional Wheat Research Centre of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur for 2 consecutive years during 2006-07 and 2007-08. The objectives were to find out the optimum nutrient management practice on tuber yield, nutrient balance and economics of potato cultivation. Twelve nutrient management treatments were tested in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Treatments were T1=HYG (0-198-44-194-24-6-1.2), T2=MYG (0-140-34-138-18-4.5-0.9), T3=IPNS (10000-168-38-170-18-6-1.2), T4=STB (0-171-40-164-22-5-1), T5=FP (0-97-16-91-0-0-0), T6=CON (0-0-0-0-0-0-0), T7=HYG+CRI, T8=MYG+CRI, T9=IPNS+CRI, T10=STB+CRI, T11=FP+CRI, T12=CON+CRI kg ha-1 CDNPKSZnB for potato. The highest tuber yield of potato was obtained from STB+CRI (27.64 t ha-1) followed by IPNS+CRI (27.35 t ha-1), STB (27.10 t ha-1), IPNS (26.83 t ha-1), HYG+CRI (26.52 t ha-1) and HYG (26.10 t ha-1) in 2006- 07. Similar trend was found in 2007-08. The highest tuber yield and yield contributing parameters were noticed in CRI plots than without CRI. Except N, remaining nutrient balance like P K S Zn and B were found positive in case of HYG, MYG, IPNS and STB along with or without CRI nutrient managements. The balance was found almost negative in case of FP and CON. The highest BCR was observed in STB+CRI (3.96) followed by STB (3.93), IPNS+CRI (3.76), and IPNS (3.74). The higher gross return (Tk. 283331 ha-1) and also gross margin (Tk. 211761 ha-1) was observed from the same treatment. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjar.v39i4.22544 Bangladesh J. Agril. Abstract Development of maize hybrid for tidal swampland was initiated by selecting and combinate some superior line genotypes that tolerate to the restrictions in target environment. This study aimed was to evaluate the capability of ten maize lines result of selection on tidal swamp acid sulphate soils to obtain GCU, GCA, and heterosis values based on parental yield averages. The experiment has consisted of ten fine line genotypes which have selected in 2019 at the tidal swamp. Each parent was crossed in half-diallel combination, resulting in 46 entries, including the inbred parents. The entries were planted in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The research was conducted on Bajeng Research Station Experiment 5°18’S and 119°30’E from September 2020 to January 2021. The result shows that GCA ability and SCA ability was significant to yield in the form of grain (15% moisture content), the number of ear per plot, ten ear weight, ten corncob weight, ear harvested weight, 1000 seeds weight, plant height, ear length and the number of seed per ear. Grain yield of W6xW9 crosses obtains the highest value of 9.36 tha−1, non-significantly different to hybrid check P35 (9.35 tha-1). The highest GCA value in the grain yield character was obtained on W9 parental line (0.64**). The highest SCA was obtained on the crossing of W7 x W8 (2.61). The highest heterosis value was revealed in W5 x W10 hybrid (4.80). However, W7 x W8 crossing heterosis value was 2.34, indicate that a high SCA effect did not usually generate high heterosis. To perform high heterosis value, W10 was good as female parental.

Boro rice (grown in winter under irrigated condition) contributes to the major portion of rice production (over 50%) in Bangladesh. Binadhan-17 is a green super rice developed by BINA which requires 30% less nitrogenous fertilizer and water which is grown in aman season (primely produced under rainfed). Due to it’s increasing popularity and adoption rice growers are keen to cultivate it in boro season also. Taking account of the above situation, two field trials were conducted at Magura during November 2019 to May 2020 to investigate the effect of variety, sowing dates and their interaction. Factorial RCBD (Randomized Complete Block Design) was applied for experimentation. Two rice varieties: Binadhan-17 (V1), BRRI dhan58 (V2) and three sowing times: 30th November (T1), 10th December (T2), 20th December (T3) were used as treatments. 35 days old seedlings were transplanted in main field. Relevant agronomic and morphological data were statistically analyzed through Statistix 10.0. Combined effect of the above factors at farm exposed that, T1×V1 required longest days (159.33 days) to mature. but, comparatively short life cycle (149.97 days) was observed by T3×V2. Maximum grain was yielded (7.70 t/ha) by T2×V1 and minimum (5.74 t/ha) by T1×V1 treatment combination. Outcomes of on station revealed that, T1×V1 needed more days (158.00 days) to mature; conversely, alike duration was noted with T2×V2 (147.20 days) and T3×V2 (145.43 days) which matured quite earlier. T2×V1 produced the highest grain yield (7.41 t/ha) and T1×V2 the lowest (5.94 t/ha). Our results indicate that, planting of Binadhan-17 on 10th December may give insect-disease free grains with optimum yield in context of Magura region. Farmers will be financially benefited if they cultivate this variety in the boro season in lieu of aman; due to higher yield
