Background: This study was conducted to demonstrate the importance of occupational health and safety (OHS) management in construction project environments, taking into account the successful development of those projects. The associated problems in OHS management projects were also studied, as substantial empirical research has shown this is a complex theme with a large number of associated factors. Methods: In this study three projects developed in the Portuguese petrochemical industry were analysed using documentary analysis, on-going interaction with workers and direct observations of work activity. A systematic literature review was also carried out. Results: Strengths and weaknesses related to OHS management of the three analysed projects were identified. Grounded on the case studies results a proposal of OHS management in construction projects, in a recommendations format, is also presented. Conclusion: Good results from OHS management in projects can be obtained as long as it is focused on success factors such as: top management commitment; line responsibility; involvement of all employees and, mainly, of direct and indirect managers. Well-defined OHS responsibilities; a well sized and structured organization and the creation of an honest, healthy, motivating and useful OHS environment team with a competent and dynamic coordinator leader are also important success factors.

PURPOSEThis paper critically analyzes and assesses the various factors of occupational health and safety (OHS), and elucidate the factors affecting construction workers’ behavior in different construction projects of Oman. It aims to create Occupational Health and Safety awareness in construction workers working for Social Entrepreneurs in Oman.DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACHTwo hundred and fifty-two construction workers from various projects were selected based on a simple random sampling basis, and the data was collected through a well-defined questionnaire.FINDINGSThe study shows that workers favor communication in the improvement of workers’ behavior in the industrial and infrastructure construction projects.Education and training help in capacity building and skills development and contributes towards sustainable positive OHS result in petrochemical construction projects. Management commitment plays a major part to maintain a sustained hazard free environment in building construction projects. The study also shows that the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) factors –OHS policies, health care, communication, management commitment, education and training and workers’ behavior, have a direct impact on health and safety results towards social entrepreneurship of creating awareness in the construction sectors of Oman.RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/ IMPLICATIONSA model named Construction Industries Influencing Factors Framework (CIIFF) Model, has been developed with the orientation of workers’ behavior which can be developed further making improvements in the existing mechanism and the factors influencing can be dealt with wider procedures to ensure improvements.SOCIAL IMPLICATIONSThe model may help in creating tools that are more effective to reduce Occupational Health and Safety related accidents and property damages in a construction project.

Small-scale contractors (SSCs) require management strategies in implementing occupational health and safety (OH&S) performance at projects to reduce accidents, injuries, fatalities and diseases. Management strategy success factors have been acknowledged to be of great benefit in improving in OH&S performance. Hence, the study sought to assess the management strategy success factors for the improvement of OH&S performance by SSCs in Zambia’s electricity industry. Using quantitative methods, data was collected using a survey questionnaire from 246 respondents representing firm owners, managers, project managers and OH&S representatives at electricity industry projects at 70.3% response rate. Descriptive and inferential statistics were adopted as methods of data analysis using exploratory factor analysis. After analysis, the success factors were clustered into three construct categories within OH&S performance namely, compliance and workplace processes, policy and human resource development, and leadership and structure significant values ranging from 0.513 to 0.972. The independent reliability was tested using the Cronbach Alpha coefficient. The study exposed management strategy success factors are well recognised by most SSCs and contributed to the body of knowledge in this mastery by introducing three success factors for OH&S performance. It is recommended that these factors be adopted and considered to improve OH&S performance management by SSCs in the electricity industry in Zambia.

This paper identifies the trends in existing literatures on management system standards such as Quality (Q), Environmental (E), Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), and Energy (En) Management System (MS). Literatures related to these management system standards (MSSs) and its integrations published between year 1980 to 2012 have been critically analyzed. It provides a general overview of the Integrated Management System (IMS) implementation and the composition of MSSs in developing IMS in various organizations. Based on the analysis, it is firm that the integration of these four (4) MSSs has not been well established. Despite that, the recurring themes of the literatures related to IMS are mainly, model for implementation, strategies and guidelines for implementation, benefits of implementation, barriers/ problems of implementation, audit of IMS, Critical Success Factors for implementing IMS and IMS Audits.

In a construction project there are various problems that occur, one of which is the problem regarding the occupational Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) which must always be considered. The research location is located in the city of Ternate, North Maluku province. This study aims to determine which constraint variable has the most influence based on the perception of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) experts. The method used is the Analytical Hierarchy Process method through the distribution of questionnaires and interviews with several construction companies. Based on the results of the AHP analysis, the rankings of the constraint variables are as follows: no evaluation related to OHS for workers in the field (0.2312), low culture (0.2277), no punishment for workers who do not carry out OHS in the field (0.1486).

Construction project Development is an event that has high risks of accidents. This could be seen in many construction projects that use sophisticated tools. Although equipped with security system, the risks are still high. The point of Occupational Health and Safety is to protect workers, and to step up the work effectively and efficient. Accidents in workplace happened because of the improper organization and management of the company. Therefore, in Construction project Development, Occupational Health and Safety is needed. The point in making this article is to prevent any accident in workplace with applying the Occupational Health and Safety that is suitable with the Constitution. This research is using the literature review method. The result of this article emphasizes in Occupational Health and Safety’s role as a right way to prevent work accidents in construction project.

Introduction: Despite improvements in occupational health and safety due to technological advancements and the adoption of management systems, accidents continue to occur in the oil and gas (O&G) industry. These accidents are often linked to human factors. The emotional intelligence (EI) of workers, however, has the potential to influence some of the human factors that predispose to accidents. Methods: In this study, we investigated how the EI factors of workers influence their health and safety performance in the work place. A total of 124 O&G industry workers completed a web-based questionnaire. Five and 14 key success factors of EI and effective occupational health and safety management systems were respectively identified through a systematic evaluation of the literature. Results: EI success factors of ‘being able to rule one’s own emotions to facilitate thinking’, ‘being able to deal with the emotions of others’ and ‘being able to discuss one’s own emotions accurately’ were found to have a relationship with health and safety performance of workers. Conclusion: The findings demonstrated that certain success factors of EI are vital for improving the health and safety performance of workers and that the development of these competencies should be part of the workers’ professional development.
