Objective: This study retrospectively correlated metallic cast retainers’ length with the quality of the remaining apical sealing. Methods: A total of 320 periapical radiographs were analyzed by two independent, calibrated examiners. The retainers’ length was classified as adequate, short, and long (2/3, <2/3, and >2/3 of the root length, respectively). The quality of the remaining apical sealing was assessed considering three aspects: lateral compaction, distance to the root apex, and amount of remaining filling material. A chi-square test at a 5% significance level was used for statistical analysis. Results: Of the 443 intracanal retainers assessed, 14.9% were adequate, 82.4% short, and 2.7% long. Regarding endodontic treatment aspects, 76.1% were inadequate in at least one aspect, whereas approximately 50% were incorrect in all aspects analyzed (p=0.0003). When both prosthetic and endodontic aspects were considered, 5.9% of the treatments were considered appropriate, 16.9% clinically acceptable, and 77.2% inadequate. Conclusions: Suitable retainers were 2.5 times more frequent in teeth with adequate endodontic treatment. The low frequency of appropriate intracanal retainers suggests inappropriate endodontic treatment.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of root canal filling performed by undergraduate students at the Federal University of Espirito Santo (UFES). A total of 368 periapical radiographs of endodontic treatment performed by undergraduate students between 2012 and 2014 was assessment. The quality of root canal filling was based on two criteria: length of root canal filling and adequate density of the obturation. Root canal fillings were considered adequate if had no voids and were located at 0-2 mm below the radiographic apex. Statistical analysis was conducted using chi-square tests, with a 5% significance level. In 93.8% of the cases the root canal filling was considered adequate. The density of the obturation was considered inadequate in 3% of the cases. When the length of root canal filling was observed, 1.2% of cases were considered as over-filled and 2.2% were considered under-filled. Non-significant differences were observed among the tooth type (incisive, canines and pre-molars) and the quality of root canal filling. Most of root canal filling performed by undergraduate students at the UFES were considered adequate, regardless of tooth type.

The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and risk factors of apical periodontitis in endodontically treated teeth in a selected population of Brazilian adults. A total of 1,372 periapical radiographs of endodontically treated teeth were analyzed based on the quality of root filling, status of coronal restoration and presence of posts associated with apical periodontitis (AP). Data were analyzed statistically using odds ratio, confidence intervals and chi-square test. The prevalence of AP with adequate endodontic treatment was low (16.5%). This percentage dropped to 12.1% in cases with adequate root filling and adequate coronal restoration. Teeth with adequate endodontic treatment and poor coronal restoration had an AP prevalence of 27.9%. AP increased to 71.7% in teeth with poor endodontic treatment associated with poor coronal restoration. When poor endodontic treatment was combined with adequate coronal restoration, AP prevalence was 61.8%. The prevalence of AP was low when associated with high technical quality of root canal treatment. Poor coronal restoration increased the risk of AP even when endodontic treatment was adequate (OR=2.80; 95%CI=1.87-4.22). The presence of intracanal posts had no influence on AP prevalence.

INTRODUCTION: Urinary incontinence affects more than 50 million people worldwide, it has a great impact on quality of life by affecting social, domestic, occupational and sex life, regardless of age. Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of physical therapy treatment in women attending the Urogynecology service of Hospital and Maternity Leonor Mendes de Barros. METHOD: We retrospectively assessed 65 records of patients with diagnosis of urinary incontinence treated between November 2005 and November 2006. In order to have their data analyzed, patients were divided into two groups; group MF, which underwent medical treatment and physiotherapy, and group M, which had only medical treatment. In order to compare both groups' quantitative data, the analysis was performed in Statistica® software using Mann Whitney's non-parametric test. The analysis of association between the quantitative variables was performed through the Chi-Square test at 5% (p > 0.05) significance level. RESULTS: We observed that 60.6% of patients who underwent physical therapy treatment and medical treatment had the urinary incontinence symptoms decreased or completely cured, while 80% of women belonging to the medical treatmen only-group underwent surgery. CONCLUSION: Thus, we conclude that physical therapy is essential in treatment protocols of urinary incontinence outpatient clinics and to prevent surgery.

ABSTRACTObjective: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the quality of the coronal restoration and the root canal filling on the periapical status of endodontically treated teeth using CBCT. Materials and Methods: CBCT data were obtained from the records of patients who deny any dental treatment in the 2 years prior to the CBCT examination. CBCT images (90 kVp and 7 mA, exposure time of 23 s, and a voxel size of 0.2 mm, with a field of view of 13 cm x 13 cm) of 1011 endodontically treated teeth were observed. A score was given to the quality of the root filling and the quality of the coronal restoration. Statistical Analysis Used: Data were statistically analyzed to correlate the periapical status with gender, dental group. and quality of endodontic treatment and restoration (Chi-square test with a significance level of P < 0.001). Results: Absence of periapical periodontitis was found in 54.9% of the cases. The periapical outcome was not related to gender or dental group (P > 0.05). A statistically significant factor (Chi-square test, P < 0.0001) resulted when different qualities of sealing were compared. Conclusions: CBCT showed that high-quality root canal treatments followed by an adequate coronal sealing restoration avoid the presence of periapical periodontitis in time.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to compare the movements of elevation and protrusion of the tongue in order to determine which position provides better lingual frenulum assessment. Methods: a database of 92 audiovisual recordings of subjects over six-years of age diagnosed with ankyloglossia was used to verify the shape of the tip of the tongue during tongue elevation and protrusion. The Chi-Square Test for Proportion was applied to verify possible differences between the postures of elevation and protrusion. The significance level of 5% (p<0.05) was adopted. Results: the statistical analysis demonstrated that both shapes, i.e., the V-shaped one and the heart-shaped one are more visible during tongue elevation than during tongue protrusion. Conclusion: elevation is the position that allows the best observation of the shape of the tip of the tongue.

AbstractTechnical quality of endodontic treatment can influence dental prognosis. The aim of the present study was to evaluate radiographically the initial periapical condition and the technical quality of root canal fillings performed by endodontic residents at UEM in 2015 and 2016. After data collection and descriptive statistics, performed by two independent examiners, the Kappa coefficient was used to assess the agreement between them. The chi-square test was used to verify a possible association of sex, tooth and quality of the restoration, with the presence of a periapical lesion. Most referrals for endodontic treatment were molars (50.5%) and female patients (63.2%), with a mean age of 39.3 (± 13.3) years. Most teeth were diagnosed with pulp necrosis (44.1%), and this condition held 74% of the teeth with chronic periapical lesions. Bone rarefaction was seen mainly in molars (20%) and teeth without restorative treatments (43.5%). Chi-square test evidenced that sex (p=0.303), tooth (p=0.349) and quality of restoration (p=0.070) were not associated with the presence of periapical bone rarefaction. After finishing the 233 root canal fillings, the apical limit and condensation were satisfactory in 91% and 100% of cases, respectively. In conclusion, the presence of chronic periapical lesion was not associated with sex, tooth or quality of the restoration. The root canal fillings performed by endodontic residents was satisfactory. Keywords: Endodontics. Root Canal Therapy. Periapical Periodontitis. Tratamento do Canal Radicular. Periodontite Periapical.
