A total of 631 participants who had used goods and services of SE businesses were selected as the unit of analysis in reference to the components of business-to-peer (B2P) and peer-to-peer (P2P) SE business models. Reliability, validity, and goodness-of-fit tests and path analysis were performed using SPSS and AMOS statistical packages. The following results were obtained. First, regarding the relationship between strategy characteristics for sustainable competitive advantage and “social congruence,” which is related to creating shared value, this variable was significantly influenced by “value network” in the B2P model and “strategic innovation” and “strategic resources” in the P2P model. Only “value of participation” made a significant contribution to “performance.”

This paper explores the thesis associating the adoption of Corporate Social Responsibility models with implementing Pro-Peace practices in scenarios of conflict and post-conflict. This work is carried out under qualitative focus and exploratory scope. Four interviews were applied to large companies who have adopted Corporate Social Responsibility models and two interviews to Associations promoting Corporate Social Responsibility in Colombia. Evidence supporting this thesis was found and its understanding was dug into when considering that Corporate Social Responsibility, as a concept, has migrated towards Creating Shared Value and Business Sustainability. This study bears the limitations associated to determining a theoretical sample and the bias of selection it implies. From this research is derived that if companies in Colombia wish to promote Pro-Peace practices, they must become involved in management models based on Corporate Social Responsibility.

This chapter examines the ways that a co-operative creates shared value for the community that it serves and works to define the concept of ‘Co-operative Advantage’ in a context where competitive advantage is more commonly discussed. It uses a case study approach, based on research conducted between 2008 and 2013 with the Lincolnshire Co-operative Society, in the East Midlands of the UK. The chapter details the co-operative’s approach, and contrasts it with that of a standard investor owned firm (IOF) model. It suggests that the co-operative identity and practices are effective in creating shared value, enhancing the co-operative’s competitiveness while simultaneously advancing the economic and social conditions in the wider community.

PurposeThis paper is a step toward a sustainability-based view of firm performance, which focuses on how companies may achieve and maintain a competitive advantage in a circular economy that is increasingly dominated by sustainability.Design/methodology/approachThis is a conceptual research paper, which provides a coherent basis for the diverse literature about sustainability, corporate social responsibility, creating shared value, shared value innovation, sustainable design and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.FindingsThe paper complements extant reviews and dynamic frameworks, such as the natural resource-based view and the innovation-based approach, to understand how firms may profit from sustainability in their business ecosystems with multiple stakeholders concerning the triple bottom line beyond financial performance. A firm’s sustainability architecture at multiple organizational levels includes interdependent components reflecting environmental, social and economic sustainability, which enable firms to achieve more value and/or do less harm. The intertemporal renewal of this architecture and its interdependencies with non-sustainability components highlight the dynamics of sustainability transformations for understanding the sustainability–performance relationship.Originality/valueThis paper contributes to sustainability research by developing a conceptual framework, which may be a basis for integrating the variety of management-related sustainability research. It further adds to research into competitive advantage by clarifying how firms may profit from sustainability. Moreover, the conceptual framework contributes to business ecosystem research because it considers internal factors in an organization as well as external factors in a firm’s environment. Finally, this paper offers new insights into strategy dynamics because the intertemporal perspective of changing a firm’s sustainability architecture underscores the need for continuous sustainability transformations.

The current literature on sustainable practices shows that social missions and economic achievement can be compatible. However, very few studies have offered a quantitative perspective on this relationship. This study presents the first empirical evidence of the effects of the creating shared value (CSV) principle on the performance of companies. Using a sample of Spanish hotels, the results suggest that companies that apply CSV achieve higher financial performance. These findings represent a substantial contribution to the literature and shed light on how to efficiently implement CSV practices to simultaneously achieve economic and social benefits.
