This article addresses an issue arising from a comparative study of the nature of education and training for Canadian full-time union staff and officials. The specific question is how can education for union officials address both the social and the servicing demands placed on them? The article locates the discussion about such training within the contexts of existing approaches to labour education and current debates about the revitalization of the labour movement. It concludes with a call for more systematic discussion of these issues and further analysis of different programmatic training models. Cet article porte sur une question découlant d’une étude comparative de la nature de l’éducation et de la formation données aux dirigeants et dirigeantes et membres du personnel à plein temps des syndicats au Canada. La question est celle de savoir comment l’on peut voir à ce que la formation donnée à ces « cadres » syndicaux leur permette de répondre aux exigences sociales et de prestation de services qui leur sont imposées. L’article place cette formation dans le contexte des approches actuelles d’éducation syndicale et du débat au sujet de la revitalisation du mouvement syndical. Il se termine par un appel à un examen plus méthodique de ces questions et à une analyse plus poussée de différents modèles de programmes de formation.

British engineers have claimed that their important contributions to economic and social well-being, based on their achievements as practical people, have gone unrecognized or unrewarded. Yet over the past thirty years efforts to boost the social prestige of British engineers appear to have undermined the social arrangements which fostered the strong practical ethos. Increasing reliance on the full-time educational system is tending to raise social prestige through bringing the ‘all graduate profession’ and through trends to recruitment from higher social backgrounds. Yet these trends have been associated with a fall in traditional and recognizable training. This paper examines both the nature of the ‘practical’ tradition and efforts to raise ‘prestige’ and asks whether the engineering profession is caught on the horns of an irresolvable dilemma—to boost either prestige or practicality. The paper concludes that in principle the British pattern of education and training has much to commend it still, with the strong emphasis on training elements in a working environment. But it is argued that its success will depend on engineers and their employers becoming much more active in the field of training.

Summary This study examines the nature of education and training for full-time union staff and officials in Canada and explores some of the factors that affect such provision. It was designed to complement similar studies of other countries and to contribute to more general discussions of labour education. The study compares the opportunities of training for Canadian union staff with similar provision in Britain and the U.S.A. and locates the discussion about further training within the contexts of existing programs of labour education and current debates about the revitalization of the labour movement. The study concludes with a call for more systematic discussion of these issues and analysis of different programmatic models.

Purpose: To explore dietetic practitioners’ perceptions of their education and training in the knowledge, skills, and confidence to understand social justice issues and to engage in socially just dietetic practice and social justice advocacy. Methods: An online semi-qualitative survey sent to Canadian dietitians. Results: Most respondents (n = 264; 81.5%) felt that knowledge- and skill-based learning about social justice and social justice advocacy should be a part of dietetic education and training. Reasons given by respondents for the importance of social justice learning include: client-centred care and reflexive practice, effecting change to the social and structural determinants of health, preventing dietitian burnout, and relevance of the profession. Yet, over half of respondents either strongly disagreed or disagreed that they were adequately prepared with the knowledge (n = 186; 57.4%), skills (n = 195; 60.2%), or confidence (n = 196; 60.5%) to engage in advocacy related to social justice concerns. Some questioned the practicality of adding social justice learning via additional courses to already full programs, while others proposed infusing a social justice lens across dietetic education and practice areas. Conclusions: Dietetic education and training must do more to prepare dietitians to answer calls for dietitians to engage in social justice issues through practice and advocacy.

AbstractThe article is a comparative study of Mycenaean Greek and Hittite land-tenure systems. It is based upon a systematic comparison of two groups of documents: land-registers (the so-called E-series) from Pylos and Middle Hittite land-donations. The traditional interpretation of both Mycenaean Greek and Hittite documents is challenged and alternative interpretations are offered. Thus, on the Mycenaean side, the construction with the preposition pa-ro is reinterpreted, and on the Hittite side an entirely new interpretation of a Hittite expression pir-sahhanas is offered. Both land-tenure systems are interpreted as two manifestations of compulsory labour service of small landholders attached to large agricultural estates. Cet article est une étude comparative des systèmes de tenue de la terre dans la Grèce mycénienne et l'empire hittite. Elle est fondée sur une comparaison systématique de deux groupes de documents : les registres de la terre (appelés la série E) de Pylos et les donations de terre moyenne hittite. L'interprétation traditionnelle des documents mycénien et hittite est ici remise en question et une nouvelle explication est offerte. Ainsi, du côté mycénien, la construction avec la préposition pa-ro est réinterprétée, et du côté hittite une interprétation entièrement nouvelle de l'expression pir-sahhanas est proposée. Les deux systèmes de tenue de la terre sont interprétés comme deux manifestations d'un service de travail obligatoire dus par des petits propriétaires attachés à des grandes propriétés agricoles.

Este artículo es síntesis crítica del informe Políticas públicas y servicios financieros rurales en Mesoamérica realizado por Michelle Deugd, Hans Nusselder, Iris Villalobos e Ignacio Fiestas. El documento analizado consiste en un estudio comparativo en cinco países mesoamericanos (México, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras y Nicaragua) de la articulación entre políticas públicas de promoción de los servicios financieros rurales y políticas públicas para el desarrollo rural. Después de presentar un panorama detallado de las situaciones nacionales, los autores muestran que existen patrones recurrentes de desarticulación entre las intervenciones públicas estudiadas. En base a su diagnóstico, plantean propuestas para una mejor integración de estos marcos políticos. Se resaltan aquí los hallazgos valiosos de esta pesquisa que permiten una buena comprensión de arquitecturas institucionales complejas. Se apuntan también ciertos enfoques que no fueron considerados por los autores y que habría que explorar para tener una visión más completa de la problemática.Abstract: This article is a critical synthesis of the report Políticas públicas y servicios financieros rurales en Mesoamérica written by Michelle Deugd, Hans Nusselder, Iris Villalobos and Ignacio Fiestas. The analysed document consists in a comparative study in five Mesoamerican countries (Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua) on the articulation between promotional public policies for the promotion of rural financial services and public policies for rural development. After presenting a detailed panorama of the national situations, the authors show that there are some recurring schemes of disarticulation between the considered public interventions. On the basis of their diagnostic, they present some propositions for a better integration of these policy frameworks. Here we put forward the valuable findings of this research that contribute to a good understanding of complex institutional architectures. We also point some approaches that have not been considered by the authors and that should be explored in order to have a more complete vision of the problematic.Résumé : Cet article est une synthèse critique du rapport Políticas públicas y servicios financieros rurales en Mesoamérica réalisé par Michelle Deugd, Hans Nusselder, Iris Villalobos et Ignacio Fiestas. Le document analysé consiste en une étude comparative dans cinq pays mésoaméricains (Mexique, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras et Nicaragua) de l’articulation entre politiques publiques de promotion des services financiers ruraux et politiques publiques de développement rural. Après avoir présenté un panorama détaillé des situations nationales, les auteurs montrent qu’il existe des schémas récurrents de désarticulation entre les interventions publiques étudiées. Sur la base de leur diagnostic, ils présentent des propositions pour une meilleure intégration de ces cadres politiques. On met ici en avant les précieux apports de cette recherche qui permettent une bonne compréhension d’architectures institutionnelles complexes. On relève aussi certaines approches qui n’ont pas été prises en compte par les auteurs et qu’il faudrait explorer pour avoir une vision plus complète de la problématique.

Donalson Silalah, Basically, the government and local governments have made the development of government officers through a program of education and training. Providing education and training is less efficient and effective manner due to the relative unavailability of assessment guidelines and evaluation of education and training. Therefore, this paper aims to build a model of assessment and evaluation of education and training. Models are constructed focused on education and training participant, lecturer, curriculum, organizers and the participants after they return to duty at their respective workplaces. Model assessment and evaluation of education and training builds upon the indicators of each aspect. Indicators that are used can be adjusted as needed. Based on the models constructed can be known what the obstacles to the implementation of education and training. Based on the constraints that are found to be a solution in the subsequent implementation of education and training.

Increasingly, individuals are using more blended, hybrid, and online deliver formats in education and training. Although research exists about how the physical and social environment impact learning and training in traditional face-to-face settings, we have limited knowledge about how the environment affects learners when they are interacting with technology in their learning situations. In particular, concerns arise about levels of engagement, whether learning is enhanced, the impact or helpfulness of robotics, and how the social dynamics change. These five panelists bring expertise in education at the undergraduate and graduate levels, training within industry and the military, and the use of various teaching and training methods. The panelists will present their perspectives to several questions relative to how the environment can (or cannot) accommodate enhanced learning in education and training when technology is involved. Ample time will remain for audience participation.
