An experimental investigation of the breakup of a liquid jet using high-speed motion pictures has revealed many different breakup mechanisms. The influence of disturbance amplitude and frequency on the breakup mechanism for a Weber number range of 25 to 160 is considered. The jet breakup is grouped into several distinct regions, depending on the disturbance wavelength ( λ ), and the undisturbed jet diameter ( D ). These include the random breakup region for λ/D < 3, short wavelength Rayleigh breakup region for 3 < λ/D < 5.5, medium wavelength Rayleigh breakup region for 5.5 < λ/D < 11, and long wavelength Rayleigh breakup region for λ/D > 11. Except for the random region ( λ/D < 3), all the other regions show repeatable patterns of breakup. The boundaries between some of the distinct patterns are obtained for various Weber numbers and disturbance amplitudes. A new type of satellite merge is also discovered which is referred to as the reflexive merging satellite. Other features of the jet breakup, such as satellite/drop size ratio and breakup times, are also considered in detail.

For making sure the dry bay ignition and fire, it’s necessary to calculate the number and the sizes of the droplets and determine the mass flow rate of the fuel induced by high-speed impact and penetration of a rigid projectile into fuel tank. An analytical model is founded and the method for calculating the initial leaking velocity of the fuel is determined. It gives the equation for calculating the drop size distributions of fuel and the Sauter mean diameter (SMD) of droplets, through the Maximum Entropy Theory and the conservation for mass. Using the Harmon’s equation for SMD,the fuel droplets SMD can be calculated. Results shows that the initial leaking velocity of the fuel is about linearly increasing with the velocity of the projectile, the SMD of fuel droplets increases with the hole size of the fuel tank which induced by the penetration of the projectile and linearly decreases with the velocity of the projectile. The results can be used for the ignition and fire analysis of the dry bay adjacent to fuel tanks.

Cross flow fuel injection is a widely used approach for injecting liquid fuel in gas turbine combustors and afterburners due to the higher penetration and rapid mixing of fuel and the cross flowing airstream. Because of the very limited residence time available in these combustors it is essential to ensure that smaller drop sizes are generated within a short axial distance from the injector in order to promote effective mixing. This requirement calls for detailed investigations into spray characteristics of different injector configurations in a cross-flow environment for identifying promising configurations. The drop size characteristics of a liquid jet issuing from a forward angled injector into a cross-flow of air were investigated experimentally at conditions relevant to gas turbine afterburners. A rig was designed and fabricated to investigate the injection of liquid jet in subsonic cross-flow with a rectangular test section of cross section measuring 50 mm by 70 mm. Experiments were done with a 10 degree forward angled 0.8 mm diameter plain orifice nozzle which was flush mounted on the bottom plate of test section. Laser diffraction using Malvern Spraytec particle analyzer was used to measure drops size and distributions in the near field of the spray. Measurements were performed at a distance of 70 mm from the injector at various locations along the height of the spray plume for a reasonable range of liquid flow rates as in practical devices. The sprays were characterized using the non dimensional parameters such as the Weber number and the momentum flux ratio and drop sizes were measured at three locations along the height of the spray from the bottom wall. The momentum flux ratio was varied from 5 to 25. Results indicate that with increase in momentum flux ratio the SMD reduced at the specific locations and an higher overall SMD was observed as one goes from the bottom to the top of the spray plume. This was accompanied by a narrowing of the drop size distribution.

Different blend ratio of ternary component fuel was tested inside a constant volume chamber to investigate fuel injection and combustion under similar real engine working conditions. Because liquid spray light scattering is the different reflective rate from the liquid droplets and its surrounding background, butanol-biodiesel-diesel liquid jet penetration length can be highlighted in the images taken by high speed camera. Various ambient temperatures from 800K to 1200K and fuel composition were investigated. Measured results showed that sudden but repeatable drop of liquid jet penetration length at constant ambient temperature conditions of 800K and 900K. With ambient temperature increasing, this phenomenon became weak and disappeared. So more works focus on non-combusting experiments in order to delete combustion reflect. With butanol and biodiesel content increasing, micro explosion becomes prone excited and more violent because of the enlarged differences in volatilities and boiling point among the components. It is concluded that micro explosion which will distinctly enhances premixed combustion process and heat release rate but it present under certain initial ambient temperature conditions only and the light fuel content shouldn’t be lower than 10%.

AbstractThe high-speed liquid-jet velocity achieved using an injector strongly depends on the piston motion, physical property of the liquid, and container shape of the injector. Herein, we investigate the liquid ejection mechanism and a technique for estimating the ejection velocity of a high-speed liquid jet using a pyro jet injector (PJI). We apply a two-dimensional numerical simulation with an axisymmetric approximation using the commercial software ANSYS/FLUENT. To gather the input data applied during the numerical simulation, the piston motion is captured with a high-speed CMOS camera, and the velocity of the piston is measured using motion tracking software. To reproduce the piston motion during the numerical simulation, the boundary-fitted coordinates and a moving boundary method are employed. In addition, we propose a fluid dynamic model (FDM) for estimating the high-speed liquid-jet ejection velocity based on the piston velocity. Using the FDM, we consider the liquid density variation but neglect the effects of the liquid viscosity on the liquid ejection. Our results indicate that the liquid-jet ejection velocity estimated by the FDM corresponds to that predicted by ANSYS/FLUENT for several different ignition-powder weights. This clearly shows that a high-speed liquid-jet ejection velocity can be estimated using the presented FDM when considering the variation in liquid density but neglecting the liquid viscosity. In addition, some characteristics of the presented PJI are observed, namely, (1) a very rapid piston displacement within 0.1 ms after a powder explosion, (2) piston vibration only when a large amount of powder is used, and (3) a pulse jet flow with a temporal pulse width of 0.1 ms.

The disintegration of a charged liquid jet is examined, and the break-up mechanism inferred from photographic evidence. Gravitational, molecular and electrical forces all contribute to the segmentation of the jet and determine the drop size distribution. The disintegration process is investigated from the point of view of drop generation. The segmentation of the charged jet differs from the known ways in which an uncharged jet is broken into drops.
