Introduction: Anthropometric parameters need to be accurately measured because of their direct implications in selection of aircrew, aircrew-cockpit compatibility, and cockpit workspace design. Some of these parameters have significant diurnal variation, hence, measurement of these parameters in particular time of day becomes important. Quantification of these diurnal variations among some of the aviation significant parameters was the desired objective of the study. Material and Methods: In a prospective repeated measure design, anthropometric parameters of a total of 35 volunteers were measured in the standard defined protocol from 0800h to 1600h, at an interval of every 2h, using Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAM) Anthropometry Platform. The data were analyzed to observe and quantify changes in diurnal variations in both gravity-dependent and gravity-independent parameters. A maximum value of 0.4 cm was taken as intraobserver variations based on the results of a pilot study. Results: There was a statistically significant decrement in the values of gravity-dependent anthropometric parameters from morning to evening; the difference being more after 1200h. Most of the gravity-independent parameters did not show any significant changes from 0800h to 1600h, except leg length, which showed a decrement overtime, the difference being statistically significant after 1200h. Conclusion: The study revealed a statistically significant variation of gravity-dependent anthropometric parameters from the baseline which could be because of the effect of erect posture on the intervertebral disc height and axial compressive loads on the spine. This became practically significant after 1200h. However, most of the gravity-independent parameters did not show any significant variations. Based on the results of this study, anthropometric measurements should be done in the morning hours preferably before 1200h.

The aim of this study is to see whether Ramadan fasting has an effect on the diurnal variations in anaerobic power and swimming performance or not. Ten participants whose mean ± SE for age, height, body mass are 19.4 ± 1.4 years, 1.72 ± 0.1 m and 72.8 ± 6.6 kg, respectively. They are tested at 3 testing periods [i.e., one week before Ramadan (BR), the middle period of Ramadan (MPR), the end period of Ramadan (EPR)], tests are performed at 07:00 h and 17:00 h throughout every course. The test sessions were started with oral temperature and body mass measurements. Regularly doing first the Wingate test then a 25-m swim at maximal speed at each test session. During the three experimental periods, dietary intake was assessed. The result shows a significant diurnal variation of muscle power and fatigue throughout the Wingate test before Ramadan. Likewise, there is a daily rhythm in the stroke parameters and swimming performance in the mentioned period. These diurnal variations change during the month of Ramadan with a decrease in power output, swim performance, swim speed and stroke length in the evening, with no changes for the morning tests. Moreover, the diurnal variations of muscle fatigue during the three morning tests show no changes and remain the same. Whereas the three evening tests show a gradual increase towards tiredness. The results show that Ramadan may has a great effect on the circadian rhythm of muscle power and swimming performance. The time-of-day effects the anaerobic power variables during the normal days which disappear during Ramadan. Ramadan fasting effects performance in the evening; however, the morning performance tests are unchangeable during Ramadan. Background: During adolescence, a number of changes take place in growing children. Current study has been conducted to understand effect of sports training on the growth. Objective: The main objective of the study is to compare the anthropometric parameters in adolescent swimmers and non-swimmers. Methods: 61 boys (30 swimmers and 31non-swimmers) between age group12-17 years were selected for the study. Height, weight, biacromial breadth (BAB), bicristal breadth (BCB), mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), sum of four skinfolds (SSF) namely triceps, biceps, subscapular and suprailiac, total leg length (TLL), sitting height (SH) and arm span (AS) were the anthropometric measurements taken. Independent sample t-test was used to study the difference between the two groups with p<0.05 as level of significance. Conclusion: As a response to training stimulus, the development of anthropometric parameters of swimmers are significantly different from non-swimmers. Summary and Conclusion1. Diurnal variation in fibrinolysis is marked in the Whites and almost absent in the Bantu. >2. The difference in fibrinolytic activity beween White and Bantu has been confirmed, but was found to decrease over the course of the morning due to diurnal variation in the White subjects.3. The ingestion of butter fat does not inhibit fibrinolysis to any appreciable extent in either White or Bantu.4. The accelerating effect of heparin on fibrinolysis was found to be present in lipaemic plasma, but appears to be distinct from the fat-clearing effect.

The author gives the results derived from different discussions of nearly eighty thousand observations, made hourly during the eleven years 1854 to 1864. They are as follows:—1. That the lunar diurnal variation consists of a double maximum and minimum in each month of the year.2. That in December and January the maxima occur near the times of the moon's upper and lower passages of the meridian; while in June and July they occur six hours later, the minima then occurring near the times of the two passages.3. The change of the law for December and January to that for June and July does not happen, as in the case of the solar diurnal variations, by leaps in the course of a month (those of March and October), but more or less gradually for the different maxima and minima.

Abstract Since the ability to train the horse to be ambidextrous is considered highly desirable, rider asymmetry is recognized as a negative trait. Acquired postural and functional asymmetry can originate from numerous anatomical regions, so it is difficult to suggest if any is developed due to riding. The aim of this study was therefore to assess symmetry of posture, strength and flexibility in a large population of riders and to determine whether typical traits exist due to riding. 127 right handed riders from the UK and USA were categorized according to years riding (in 20 year increments) and their competition level (using affiliated test levels). Leg length, grip strength and spinal posture were measured and recorded by a physiotherapist. Standing and sitting posture and trunk flexibility were measured with 3-D motion capture technology. Right-left differences were explored in relation to years riding and rider competitive experience. Significant anatomical asymmetry was found for the difference in standing acromion process height for a competition level (-0.07±1.50 cm Intro/Prelim; 0.02±1.31 cm Novice; 0.43±1.27 cm Elementary+; p=0.048) and for sitting iliac crest height for years riding (-0.23±1.36 cm Intro/Prelim; 0.01±1.50 cm Novice; 0.86±0.41 cm Elementary+; p=0.021). For functional asymmetry, a significant interaction was found for lateral bending ROM for years riding x competition level (p=0.047). The demands on dressage riders competing at higher levels may predispose these riders to a higher risk of developing asymmetry and potentially chronic back pain rather than improving their symmetry

Effects of forced sleep-wake schedules with and without physical exercise were examined on the human circadian pacemaker under dim light conditions. Subjects spent 15 days in an isolation facility separately without knowing the time of day and followed a forced sleep-wake schedule of a 23 h 40-min period for 12 cycles, and physical exercise was imposed twice per waking period for 2 h each with bicycle- or rowing-type ergometers. As a result, plasma melatonin rhythm was significantly phase advanced with physical exercise, whereas it was not changed without exercise. The difference in phase was already significant 6 days after the start of exercise. The amplitude of melatonin rhythm was not affected. A single pulse of physical exercise in the afternoon or at midnight significantly phase delayed the melatonin rhythms when compared with the prepulse phase, but the amount of phase shift was not different from that observed in the sedentary controls. These findings indicate that physical exercise accelerates phase-advance shifts of the human circadian pacemaker associated with the forced sleep-wake schedule.

Abstract. The hygroscopic growth of aerosol particles present in a boreal forest was measured at a relative humidity of 88%. Simultaneously the gas phase concentration of sulfuric acid, a very hygroscopic compound, was monitored. The focus was mainly on days with new particle formation by nucleation. The measured hygroscopic growth factors (GF) correlated positively with the gaseous phase sulfuric acid concentrations. The smaller the particles, the stronger the correlation, with r=0.20 for 50 nm and r=0.50 for 10 nm particles. The increase in GF due to condensing sulfuric acid is expected to be larger for particles with initially smaller masses. During new particle formation, the changes in solubility of the new particles were calculated during their growth to Aitken mode sizes. As the modal diameter increased, the solubility of the particles decreased. This indicated that the initial particle growth was due to more hygroscopic compounds, whereas the later growth during the evening and night was mainly caused by less hygroscopic or even hydrophobic compounds. For all the measured sizes, a diurnal variation in GF was observed both during days with and without particle formation. The GF was lowest at around midnight, with a mean value of 1.12–1.24 depending on particle size and if new particle formation occurred during the day, and increased to 1.25–1.34 around noon. This can be tentatively explained by day- and nighttime gas-phase chemistry; different vapors will be present depending on the time of day, and through condensation these compounds will alter the hygroscopic properties of the particles in different ways.

<p>The effect of time of day and month on the efficient conversion of solar energy to electrical energy using a polycrystalline (PV) module in calabar was studied. A KT-908 precision digital hygrometer and thermometer, and a M890C+ digital multimeter were used in the process. Results obtained shows that photovoltaic produce different levels of peak efficiencies at different times of the day for different months due to the difference in sunrise and sunset times for the months. The results also indicated that photovoltaics will be more efficient in months with low average relative humidity couple with low panel temperature. A peak efficiency of 77% at 12:30 in the month of April was observed before dropping to 73% at 12:00 in the month of May, indicating that there might be further drop in efficiency as we proceed further into the year. Results also show that photovoltaics are more efficient before noon in the month of May than in April while the reverse will be observed in the afternoon. </p>

Cycling has a range of benefits as is recognised by national and international policies aiming to increase cycling rates. Darkness acts as a barrier to people cycling, with fewer people cycling after-dark when seasonal and time-of-day factors are accounted for. This paper explores whether road lighting can reduce the negative impact of darkness on cycling rates. Changes in cycling rates between daylight and after-dark were quantified for 48 locations in Birmingham, United Kingdom, by calculating an odds ratio. These odds ratios were compared against two measures of road lighting at each location: 1) Density of road lighting lanterns; 2) Relative brightness as estimated from night-time aerial images. Locations with no road lighting showed a significantly greater reduction in cycling after-dark compared with locations that had some lighting. A nonlinear relationship was found between relative brightness at a location at night and the reduction in cyclists after-dark. Small initial increases in brightness resulted in large reductions in the difference between cyclist numbers in daylight and after-dark, but this effect reached a plateau as brightness increased. These results suggest only a minimal amount of lighting may be sufficient to promote cycling after-dark.

Sonic anemometer observation was performed on 29 - 30 September 2014 in Ledeng, Bandung to see diurnal variations of Turbulence Kinetic Energy (TKE) that occurred in this area. The measured sonic anemometer was the wind velocity components u, v, and w. From the observation result, it can be seen that the diurnal variation that happened was quite significant. The maximum TKE occurs during the daytime when atmospheric conditions tend to be unstable. TKE values were small at night when atmospheric conditions are more stable than during the daytime.
