A report on foreign language film exhibition and distribution in Australia was commissioned by the Research Unit of the Australian Film and Television School in late 1979. The report, which includes a directory of over 200 individuals and organizations associated with foreign language film services, will be published by the AFTS as a monograph. Presented here is a comprehensive summary of the report (excluding the directory) which indicates that although the future of ‘ethnic’ film theatres is in doubt, exhibition at alternative venues appears to have increased. Similarly, many more distributors (mainly small) have entered the market.

The purpose of this article is to study the psychological impact of Chinese film and television works in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language at intermediate and advanced levels, analyze the role of Chinese film and television works in teaching Chinese as a foreign language at intermediate and advanced levels, and to understand the basic situation and influence of Chinese film and television works in teaching Chinese as a foreign language at intermediate and advanced levels, as well as their use this method contrasts before and after the study of the influence of Chinese film and television works in teaching Chinese as a foreign language at intermediate and advanced levels. Using the method of this article, through the analysis of experimental data, I understand the role of Chinese film and television works in teaching Chinese as a foreign language at intermediate and advanced levels, and find that Chinese film and television works play an important role in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Based on the combination of theory and experimental data, it is analyzed that the effect of Chinese film and television works on teaching Chinese as a foreign language is very good. The research results show that Chinese film and television works have an important role in teaching Chinese as a foreign language at intermediate and advanced levels. Contemporary Chinese film and television not only impresses foreigners with vivid stories and vivid characters.

Ancient Greece and Rome play starring roles as ideal sites for the iconic characters and plots that cinema and television use to depict the spectacle of the ancient world. The viewing audience is invited to experience the cinematic and televisual depiction of classical antiquity as it is deployed to accomplish a number of different objectives: the image of the ancient world on screen can be used to support contemporary political goals, to interrogate current social issues, or to engage in cultural debates about the modern world’s connection to the classical past. Since the ancient Greek and Roman worlds are frequently used as the visual and narrative backdrop for adventure and romance, the audience is often thrilled to view the luxury, decadence, and excess notoriously enjoyed by the uninhibited ancients. Viewers of films and television series about the ancient world remain engaged in a long and sometimes complex relationship with the representation of classical antiquity on screen, an engagement that has been well analyzed in the last few years by scholars and critics.

Penelitian ini mengupas tentang pesan moral yang berhubungan dengan ketamakan dalam film Parasite. Karya seni berbahasa Korea Selatan ini dipilih karena merupakan film terbaik di dunia versi Academy Awards atau Oscar 2020. Pada 2019 lalu, garapan Bong Joon-Ho ini meraih Palme d’Or dalam Festival Film Cannes ke-72. Sekaligus mendapat apresiasi berupa delapan menit standing ovation dari hadirin. Pada Januari 2020, karya yang berjudul asli Gisaengchung ini memenangkan Best Foreign Language Film di Golden Globe Awards dan Cast in a Motion Picture di Screen Actors Guild Award. Tak hanya itu, rekam jejak film ini menjadi lebih menarik karena meraih Best Film Not in the English Language dalam British Academy of Film and Television Arts 2020, beserta sederet penghargaan di ajang internasional lainnya. Sejumlah artikel membahas tentang aspek kesenjangan sosial yang ditunjukkan di film ini. Padahal, sebagai sebuah karya seni, pesan moral dalam sebuah produk sinematik bisa beragam dan dapat ditelaah dari beragam sudut pandang. Riset ini bersandar pada teori representasi yang merujuk pada konsep tamak dalam perspektif Islam dan Kristen, seperti tertera pada tafsir di kitab suci Al-Qur’an dan Injil. Metode yang digunakan adalah kualitatif dengan pendekatan analisis visual pada lingkup the site of image itself. Hasil dari penelitian ini, ketamakan tergambar pada sikap dari satu keluarga miskin yang memiliki peran utama dalam film Parasite.

Abstract Providing adequate speech therapy services to Latinos who stutter can present challenges that are not obvious to the practicing clinician. This article addresses cultural, religious, and foreign language concerns to the therapeutic relationship between the Latino client and the clinician. Suggestions are made for building cross-cultural connections with clients and incorporating the family into a collaborative partnership with the service provider.

Summary: The body of evidence suggests that there is a causal association between nonfictional media reporting of suicide (in newspapers, on television, and in books) and actual suicide, and that there may be one between fictional media portrayal (in film and television, in music, and in plays) and actual suicide. This finding has been explained by social learning theory. The majority of studies upon which this finding is based fall into the media “effects tradition,” which has been criticized for its positivist-like approach that fails to take into account of media content or the capacity of audiences to make meaning out of messages. A cultural studies approach that relies on discourse and frame analyses to explore meanings, and that qualitatively examines the multiple meanings that audiences give to media messages, could complement the effects tradition. Together, these approaches have the potential to clarify the notion of what constitutes responsible reporting of suicide, and to broaden the framework for evaluating media performance.

Abstract. Eye movements of children (Grade 5-6) and adults were monitored while they were watching a foreign language movie with either standard (foreign language soundtrack and native language subtitling) or reversed (foreign language subtitles and native language soundtrack) subtitling. With standard subtitling, reading behavior in the subtitle was observed, but there was a difference between one- and two-line subtitles. As two lines of text contain verbal information that cannot easily be inferred from the pictures on the screen, more regular reading occurred; a single text line is often redundant to the information in the picture, and accordingly less reading of one-line text was apparent. Reversed subtitling showed even more irregular reading patterns (e.g., more subtitles skipped, fewer fixations, longer latencies). No substantial age differences emerged, except that children took longer to shift attention to the subtitle at its onset, and showed longer fixations and shorter saccades in the text. On the whole, the results demonstrated the flexibility of the attentional system and its tuning to the several information sources available (image, soundtrack, and subtitles).

Nearly all Canadian universities employ, as a standard for university admission, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). In light of considerable evidence indicating only a weak relationship between TOEFL scores and academic achievement, the Canadian Psychological Association recently issued a report containing a position statement that called upon Canadian universities to refrain from employing the TOEFL in this manner. Because the concerns raised in the report are likely to apply to many universities outside Canada, the entire report is reproduced in this article.

Based on the model of Reid, Giles and Abrams (2004 , Zeitschrift für Medienpsychologie, 16, 17–25), this paper describes and analyzes the relation between television use and ethnolinguistic-coping strategies among German speakers in South Tyrol, Italy. The data were collected among secondary school students (N = 415) in 2011. The results indicated that the television use of the students was dominated by the German language. A mediation analysis revealed that TV viewing contributed to the perception of ethnolinguistic vitality, the permeability of intergroup boundaries, and status stability, which in turn affected ethnolinguistic-coping strategies of mobility (moving toward the outgroup), creativity (maintaining identity without confrontation), and competition (fighting for ingroup rights and respect). Findings and theoretical implications are discussed.
