The purpose of the study is to present a comparative analysis and evolution of plot No. 325 “The Magician and his Pupil” in the international catalogues by A. Aarne (1910), Aarne-Thompson (1928 and 1961) and G. Uther (2004), as well as 325 in the national (Russian) catalogues by N. P. Andreev and L. G. Barag, K. P. Kabashnikov and N. V. Novikov (Comparative index of plots: East-Slavic folk-tale). The research leads the author to the following conclusions: 1) the analysis of plot No. 325, starting with the first international catalogue by Aarne (1910) and ending with its latest version by G. Uther (2004), shows the evolution of its plot, the complexity of its scientific apparatus, as well as the wide area of its distribution which confirms the fact of the typological similarity of the plot variants; 2) the study of ATU 325 motifs in Thompson’s catalogue (1961) shows the necessity to introduce a clearer definition of the notion “motif” in the tradition of international catalogues, as well as the unification of its motifs for a clearer description of a fairy tale type; 3) based on the latest achievements of folklore studies in the field of fairy tale research, it becomes necessary to check and update the national catalogue Comparative index of plots: East-Slavic folk-tale, include more modern materials on the study of this plot type, add such sections as Contaminations, Remarks and Literature / Variants after each plot description; 4) a comparative analysis allows us to clarify some points in Plot No. 325 ‘Crafty lore’ (‘The Magician And his Pupil’).

The study is devoted to a comparative analysis of the original and translated texts of the Kalmyk folk tale "Ayu Chikt Avkha Tsetsn khoir" ("Ayu Chikte and Avkha Tsetsen") from the repertoire of the narrator M. Burinov. In the process of comparing the original text of the fairy tale in the Kalmyk language (1960) and the Russian translation by M. G. Vatagina (1964) notes the nature of the discrepancies and inaccuracies found in the foreign language narrative in the transfer of the meaning of individual episodes of the plot, formula expressions, word combinations), which play an important role in the fairy tale narration. The study of a folklore text in its multilingual embodiments is relevant in the light of the problems that arise within the interaction of texts of distant cultures. To convey the national specifics of the fairy - tale tradition, maximum accuracy is required when translating episodes, formulas and some words that are important for understanding the original meaning of an original text.

This book explores the legacy of the Brothers Grimm in Europe and North America, from the nineteenth century to the present. The book reveals how the Grimms came to play a pivotal and unusual role in the evolution of Western folklore and in the history of the most significant cultural genre in the world—the fairy tale. Folklorists Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm sought to discover and preserve a rich abundance of stories emanating from an oral tradition, and encouraged friends, colleagues, and strangers to gather and share these tales. As a result, hundreds of thousands of wonderful folk and fairy tales poured into books throughout Europe and have kept coming. The book looks at the transformation of the Grimms' tales into children's literature, the Americanization of the tales, the “Grimm” aspects of contemporary tales, and the tales' utopian impulses. It shows that the Grimms were not the first scholars to turn their attention to folk tales, but were vital in expanding readership and setting the high standards for folk-tale collecting that continue through the current era. The book concludes with a look at contemporary adaptations of the tales and raises questions about authenticity, target audience, and consumerism. The book examines the lasting universal influence of two brothers and their collected tales on today's storytelling world.

In the present edition “The stylistic and poetical-compositional system of a fairy tale” in 2 volumes, the author's works in the field of the study of the stylistic system of a fairy tale, carried out within the framework of an experimental direction in folklore studies, are combined. The study of the problem in this direction was undertaken by the author on the initiative of the outstanding scientist V.M. Gatsak, Doctor of Philology, Corresponding Member RAS, and was conducted over a number of years. The monograph “Oral stylistic foundations of a fairy tale. Experimental study on the abkhaz material”, which constituted 1 volume of this edition “The stylistic and poetical-compositional system of a fairy tale”, is devoted to topical problems of folklore studies, dictated by the urgent need for a comprehensive audio-visual study of folklore style. The work was carried out according to a special methodology, providing for the study of samples of oral poetry in their living existence in the light of the requirements of the experimental direction in folklore with the obligatory use of repeated recordings of fairy texts at different times, as well as film and photo documents. The aim and task of the research is to reveal the peculiarities of the style of fairy tale narration in their conditionality by the laws of preservation and transmission of traditions. The section “Appendices” contains samples of tabular analysis and intonation recording of typed repetitions, a package of film and photographic documents, a disc with a recording of the text being executed and rhythmic segments.

AbstractTrends in development of folklore studies in the research and education space at Ukrainian and foreign universities have been analyzed. They are fundamentalization, synthesis of academic science and educational practice, professionalization, institutionalization, humanitarization, anthropoligization, interdisciplinarity. It has been defined that in Ukrainian and foreign folkloristic discourse of the 20th – the beginning of the 21th centuries, folklore is studied through the prism of functional, communicative, anthropological, context-based approaches that is partially realized in the official definition of folklore according to the 1989 UNESCO Recommendation on the Safeguarding of Traditional Culture and Folklore. It has been found out that while structuring the content of folkloristic disciplines as well as directing future specialists’ researches the multivectoring of folklore studies allows instructors to use the achievements of folkloristic directions that were formed in historical retrospective and actively developed at the modern stage: linguofolkloristics, ethnomusicology, folk therapy (folk music therapy, fairytale therapy, folk dance therapy), etc. It has been justified that folklore studies in Ukrainian and foreign research and education space is being developed as an interdisciplinary science based on the historical and pedagogical experience and taking into account modern integration processes that define the problematics of the content of folkloristic, culturological training of future pedagogue-researcher who is to be educated as a man of culture, nationally aware and, at the same time, multicultural personality.

Recently Ohtsuki [Oh2], motivated by the notion of finite type knot invariants, introduced the notion of finite type invariants for oriented, integral homology 3-spheres. In the present paper we propose another definition of finite type invariants of integral homology 3-spheres and give equivalent reformulations of our notion. We show that our invariants form a filtered commutative algebra. We compare the two induced filtrations on the vector space on the set of integral homology 3-spheres. As an observation, we discover a new set of restrictions that finite type invariants in the sense of Ohtsuki satisfy and give a set of axioms that characterize the Casson invariant. Finally, we pose a set of questions relating the finite type 3-manifold invariants with the (Vassiliev) knot invariants.

The article presents a comparative analysis of the theory of Ferdinand Tönnies “Gemeinschaft/Gesellschaft” and the philosophy of catholicity in the works of A.S. Khomyakov and I.V. Kireevsky. The theory of Tönnies is considered in the light of the concept of “sociological conservatism” manifested by A.F. Filippov. It is shown that the conceptual opposition “Gemeinschaft/Gesellschaft” can be seen continuation of the discussion about the “nature of the social”. In this light, the main reference points of Tönnies sociology are the political theories of Aristotle and Hobbes, with an emphasis on the definition of the “natural state” of man. Based on the analysis of Tönnies theory, it is shown that its comparison with Slavophilism is possible in three parameters: appeal to the factor of substantiality, the dichotomy of “historical” and “non – historical” and the use of the concept of “organic”. It is proved that in the context of a “conservative” reading of the philosophy of sobornost, its argumentation turns out to be mainly political and sociological

The strong connection between the Komi and Russian fairy tale traditions has been noted repeatedly, yet research on this issue is clearly insufficient. In this article the author attempts to define the interaction of fairy tales of these neighboring peoples which belong to different linguistic families but which have closely related cultural traditions. Its specific focus is fairy tale SUS number 502 “Copper Forehead.” It examines five Komi variants of the fairy tale that contain all of the significant elements of this plot type. Examination of the Komi material challenges the idea that the laws governing folktales are stable. With the fading of folkloric traditions, there have been changes in fairy tales’ most stable components, their plot and compositional structure. Komi storytellers have introduced changes that transform Komi fairy tales in the direction of “novelization,” turning them to some extent into oral tales of adventure and fantasy. Traditional stories are reinterpreted primarily due to contamination, including bringing folklore tales closer to those from Russian books. At the same time, these normal changes by no means indicate the complete destruction of Komi folklore’s deep traditional basis. The study also demonstrates that Komi storytellers have had a clear notion of traditional fairy-tale patterns and made wide use of them, which has largely contributed to the preservation of the fairy tale as a genre.
