Evaluation of reproduction for mussel Mytilus trossulus (Bivalvia: Mytilidae) in the Veselaya Bay (Tauiskaya Guba Bay, Okhotsk Sea)

Abundance, size composition, and terms of plankton stage were investigated for the larvae of pacific mussel in the Veselaya Bay (Okhotsk Sea) in two years with different oceanographic regime. The first larvae (density 8-30 ind./m³, shell length 75–150 μm) appeared in late June in the year with relatively high water temperature (2016) and in early July in the year with lowered temperature (2011), then their number had increased to 1750 ind./m³ in early August of 2016 and to 1320 ind./m³ in late August of 2011. Density and size composition of the spat and young mussels were examined in hanging collectors and nurseries. The growth rate change in dependence on shell length was noted. There is concluded that the hanging collectors are more effective for spat collection, while the nurseries are better for growing of littoral mussels.

Исследована скорость роста культивируемых моллюсков подвесного выращивания в зал. Посьета (зал. Петра Великого, Японское море) за 1970–2011 гг. Приведены ростовые характеристики приморского гребешка (Mizuhopecten yessoensis (Jay, 1857)), тихоокеанской мидии (Mytilus trossulus Gould, 1850) и тихоокеанской (гигантской) устрицы (Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg, 1793)) в течение первых трех лет развития. Методами энтропийного анализа исследованы сроки достижения личинками и спатом определенных размеров. Выявлены временные интервалы и рассчитана вероятность наступления этих сроков. Обсуждается влияние техники культивирования на скорость роста. The growth rates of cultivated mollusks were studied in Possjet Bay (Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan) during 1970–2011. The growth characteristics were presented for the Yesso scallop (Mizuhopecten yessoensis (Jay, 1857)), the blue mussel (Mytilus trossulus Gould, 1850), and the Pacific (giant) oyster (Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg, 1793)) during the first three years of life. The average amount of time of the larvae and spat reaching certain sizes was determined using the method of entropy analysis. The time intervals were identified and the probability of these intervals to happen were also calculated. The influence of the cultivation techniques on the growth rate is discussed. We examined the shell morphology of the bay mussel Mytilus trossulus (Gould) at six locations with various levels of wave exposure in Barkley Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Young adult M. trossulus (29-35 mm shell length) collected from wave-exposed sites displayed striking differences in shell morphology from M. trossulus from sheltered sites. Mytilus trossulus from wave-exposed habitats had a lower shell height / shell width ratio and a thicker shell; they also had higher, more robust dysodont teeth, as well as a thicker hinge ligament. Examination of juveniles (12-14 mm shell length) collected from a wave-exposed shore and a sheltered shore separated by only a few hundred metres displayed similar differences in shell morphology and ligament thickness. These observations suggest that wave exposure is the cause of the observed differences in shell morphology and ligament thickness in M. trossulus. This is the first report of a correlation between wave exposure and morphology of the dysodont teeth and ligament in a bivalve. We discuss potential selective pressures that may favor characteristics of wave-exposed shells, including the probability of dislodgment and misalignment of valves in high wave energy areas.

The growth of various size groups of mussels in the Veselaya Bay of the tauyskaya Bay, grown in mono - and polyculture in suspended cages in the sea, was analyzed. The maximum growth was observed in mussels of the size group 10-20 mm at the age of 2 years. Shellfish grew more slowly at the age of 3-5 years. The growth rate of mollusks of all size groups in the polyculture was higher than in the monoculture. The percentage of elimination of mussels of all age groups in the polyculture was significantly lower. The forecast of growth of mussels of various size groups in poly - and monoculture in suspended cages in the first, second and third growth seasons in Veselaya Bay is made. The efficiency of cultivation of mussels in the Northern part of the sea of Okhotsk together with other edible mollusks: makoma and Miya is shown.

Biology of Mytilus trossulus is investigated in the Vesyolaya Cove, the Tauiskaya Bay on June 16 - September 20, 2011 within experimental studies of its cultivation ability in severe conditions of the northern Okhotsk Sea. In case of so called Spanish cultivation technology or its White Sea modification, the mussels grow to the commercial size (35 mm) in 3-4 seasons. To decrease this time to 1-2 seasons, the breeding technology is applied with the mussels collecting from the littoral substrate and their further breeding in hanged collectors. The mussels growth rate is evaluated both on the littoral substrate and in the collectors. The growth rate becomes lower after the mussels transfer from the littoral substrate to the hanged collectors but increases intensively after their transfer from the collectors to the littoral substrate, being higher that for the originally littoral mollusks. The growth rate dependence on size and age of the mussels is considered.

Abstract In 1989, Lake Piaseczno, Poland, exhibited a mass appearance of Planktothrix rubescens. During this time the pelagic and littoral areas exhibited significant increases in areal primary production (400 and 41 mg C m-2 h-1, respectively), chlorophyll α (100 and 6.9 mg m-2, respectively) and assimilation number (4 and 5.9 mg C m-2 h-1/mg chlα m-2, respectively). After the water bloom subsided, a reduction of dissolved oxygen concentration (down to 1.5 mg L-1) and high water temperature (10.2°C) in the offshore bottom zone was observed. While from 1991 to 1996, the primary production, chlorophyll α concentration and assimilation number values were decreasing, they were significantly higher than the values reported in 1986, prior to the mass cyanobacteria appearance. An indirect correlation with ion levels indicated that the outbreak of the cyanobacteria was linked with inflow of nutrients from the catchment area. The dramatic changes in the range and variability of the phytoplankton density indicate that the recent eutrophication of the lake has had profound effects on the structure and productivity of the aquatic community.

Aquaculture is is often constrained by the availability of water, both in quality and quantity. The aim of this study was to determine the optimum maintenance system of elver (Anguilla bicolor bicolor) on a wet, moist and dry system through production performance studies and physiological responses. The research was conducted from August to September 2018 at the Production Technic and Management of Aquaculture Laboratory, Department of Aquaculture, IPB University. A completely randomized design with 5 treatments and 3 replications was used in this study, namely treatment with high water wet system 0% of body height (A), high water wet system 50% of body height (B), high water wet system 100% of body height (C), moist system (D), and dry system (E). The body weight of elver was 18.80 ± 0.62 g which derived from fish cultivator in Bogor, West Java. Fish was fed 3 times per day at satiation with commercial feed which a protein content of 50%. Results showed that treatment C was the best result with survival rate of 100%, the specific growth rate of 0.45% day -1, the absolute growth rate of 0.07 g day 1 and feed conversion ratio of 6.57. The analysis of variance showed that the treatments showed the significant effect (P <0.05). The blood glucose value closest to the eel condition before treatment was found in the treatment C.
