New series of Schiff base compounds obtained from sulfa drugs have been synthesized by the reaction of sulfonamide compounds (sulfadiazine, sulfapyridine, sulfamethazine, or sulfamerazine) with corresponding aromatic aldehydes (3-pyridinecarboxaldehyde or 4-pyridinecarboxaldehyde). The synthesized compounds were characterized by FT-IR, ESI-Mass, and 1H-NMR spectroscopy to confirm the chemical structures of synthesized compounds. The purity of all synthesized compounds were verified using pre-coated TLC (MERCK) plates using dichloromethane: methanol (9:1) solvent system. The chromatographic plates were viewed under ultraviolet(UV) light at 254 nm The sulfonamide Schiff base compounds were tested for antibacterial evaluation against two pathogenic Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp.) and two pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia). The antibacterial activity of synthesized compounds was evaluated by assessing the inhibitory concentration by measuring their inhibition zone versus certain kinds of standard antibiotics with concentrations (500, 750, and 1000) μg /ml. Most synthesized compounds at high concentration were moderately active against all tested bacteria ,compound SH7 showed best antibacterial activity for both (Gram-positive and Gram-negative) bacteria while SH8 compound exhibited moderate antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and weak activity (<10 mm) against Gram-negative bacteria and all synthesized compounds were less antibacterial activity for all tested bacterial strains than standard drugs.

magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO NPs) were prepared by simple wet chemical method using different calcination temperatures. The prepared NPs were characterized by Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). It demonstrates sharp intensive peak with the increase of crystallinty and increase of the size with varying morphologies with respect to increase of calcination temperature. Antibacterial studies were done on gram negative bacteria (E.coli) and gram positive bacteria (S.aureus) by agar disc diffusion method. The zones of inhibitions were found larger for gram positive bacteria than gram negative bacteria, this mean, antibacterial MgO NPs activity more active on gram positive bacteria than gram negative bacteria because of the structural differences. It was found that antibacterial activity of MgO NPs was found it has directly proportional with their concentration.

Novel Cu(II),Ni(II) and VO(II) complexes are synthesized with N1,N4-bis(2-aminobenzylidene)benzene-1,4-diamine (L). Complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, IR, UV and EPR. Spectral studies reveals a square planner geomentry for Cu(II), Ni(II) complexes and square pyramidal for VO(II) complex. The ligand and its complexes were also evaluated against the growth of gram positive bacteria and gram negative bacteria.

The essential oil of the leaves of Espeletia nana Cuatrec, obtained by hydrodistillation, was analyzed by GC-MS, which allowed the identification of 24 components, which made up 99.9% of the oil. The most abundant compounds were α-pinene (38.1%), β-pinene (17.2%), myrcene (15.0%), spathulenol (4.2%), bicyclogermacrene (4.0%), α-zingiberene (4.0%), and γhimachalene (3.7%). Antibacterial activity was tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria using the agar disk diffusion method. Activity was observed only against Gram-positive bacteria. MIC values were determined for Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923(200 μg/mL) and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 (600 μg/mL).

Water-dispersible glycosylated poly(2,5′-thienylene)porphyrin-based nanoparticles have the ability to generate singlet oxygen in high yields and exhibit light-triggered antibacterial activity against Gram negative bacteria, E. coli as well as Gram positive bacteria, B. subtilis.

Some new chalcones have been prepared by Claisen-schmidt condensation of ketone and different aromatic aldehydes. These chalcones on condensation with urea in presence of acid gave Pyrimidine-2-ones. The synthesized compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR and1H NMR spectral data. They have been screened for their antibacterial activity against Gram positive bacteria B. subtillis & S. aureus and Gram negative bacteria E. coli & S. typhi.

Quercetin (3,3′,4′,5,7-pentahydroxyflavone) is one of the dietary flavonoids, distributed in medicinal plants, vegetables, and fruits. Quercetin has the ability to bind with several metal ions to increase its biological activities. In the last two decades, quercetin has attracted considerable attention due to the biological and pharmaceutical activities such as antioxidant, antibacterial, and anticancer. In the present study, quercetin and ethanolamine were used for the synthesis Schiff base complex, which was characterized by IR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The Schiff base has been employed as a ligand for the synthesis of novel nanoscale Cu (II) complex. The product was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, FESEM, and XRD. Significantly, the product showed remarkable catalytic activity towards the oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols. The antibacterial activity of the final product was assessed against Staphylococcus aureus (Gram‐positive) and Escherichia coli (Gram‐negative) bacteria using an inhibition zone test. The synthesized nanoscale Cu (II) complex exhibited a strong antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Pneumonia is defined as an inflammation of the lungs caused by microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites). This research aimed to determine the pneumonia-causing bacteria along with the sensitivity and the antibiotic resistance test. This research was a descriptive study with samples of ICU pneumonia patients at Raden Mattaher Regional Hospital during the study period. All samples were consecutively selected. Samples for blood culture were incubated in the BactAlert device, whereas the sensitivity test was then performed using Vitex instruments. Sputum was previously enriched with BHI media and then cultured on culture media, and sensitivity test with the Vitex instruments was carried out. Of the 354 ICU patients during the study period, 30 patients (11.8%) had pneumonia, but only 19 patients could undergo sputum culture. Five of 19 patients were infected with Gram-positive bacteria, and 14 patients were infected with Gram-negative bacteria. The most commonly found bacteria were Klebsiella pneumonia (36.84%), followed by Acinetobacter baumanii (21.05%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (10.53%). Gram-negative bacteria obtained from sputum culture in this study were resistant to almost all antibiotic groups, especially penicillin, cephalosporin, quinolone, and tetracycline groups. Gram-positive bacteria obtained from sputum culture in this study were resistant to the penicillin antibiotic. The most commonly found bacteria were Klebsiella pneumonia (36.84%), followed by Acinetobacter baumanii (21.05%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (10.53%). The bacteria cultured from the sputum showed multidrug resistance mainly to the penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotic. This research data can be used to consider the treatment of pneumonia patients to decide more appropriate therapy.

Abstract Amphibians, like some animals and plants, defend themselves against various pathogenic organisms by producing and secreting various peptides and small molecules from granular skin glands. In this study, we evaluated for the first time, the antibiotic activity of the skin secretions of 8 different frog species (Euphlyctis cyanophlyctis, E. hexadactylus, Fejervarya teraiensis, F. asmati, F. syhadrensis, Hoplobatrachus tigerinus, Microhyla ornata and Polypedates leucomystax) from Bangladesh. These secretions were collected by a nonlethal approach through chemical stimulation and the antibacterial activity was evaluated by broth macrodilution method against some Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Our study revealed that all the skin secretions (8 out of 8) from the selected frogs have antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and 7 out of 8 skin secretions possess antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria tested. Further analysis of data showed that these secretions are significantly more effective against Gram-positive bacteria than Gram-negative bacteria.

Polyaniline(PANI) doped by natural acid(citric acid, salicylic acid or rosin acid)solutions was synthesized using aniline as monomer and ammonium peroxydisulfate ((NH4)2S2O8) as oxidant. The antibacterial activities of the PANI against Gram positive bacteria(Bacillus megatherium, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus and Staphylo-coccus aureus) and Gram negative bacteria(Bacillus coli) were investigated. It was shown that PANI doped by citric acid possessed the better antibacterial activity against the selected species of Gram positive bacteria and Gram negative bacteria than PANI doped by rosin acid. PANI doped by salicylic acid exhibited ascendant antibacterial activities against Gram positive bacteria, but it has little antibacterial activity against the Gram negative bacteria.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial potential of the male flowers of Phoenix dactylifera (date palm tree) against five Gram-positive and five Gram-negative bacteria. Methods: Male flowers were collected and extracted by maceration using 80% methanol and the antibacterial activity was determined using cup-plate diffusion test, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) tests. Results: The methanol extract of male flowers of Phoenix dactylifera showed varying degrees of antibacterial activity against tested bacterial strains, the most susceptible Gram-positive bacteria were Bacillus cereus and Streptococcus pneumonia which recorded 12.2±0.3 and 9.0±0.0 mm zone of inhibition (ZI), MIC values were 50 and 100 mg/ml, MBC values were 200 and ˂200 mg/ml, respectively. The most susceptible Gram-negative bacteria were Proteus vulgaris, Klebsiella pneumonia and Pseudomonas aeruginosa which recorded 10.0±0.0, 9.7±0.3 and 9.0±0.0 mm ZI, MIC values were 100 mg/ml and MBC values were 200 mg/ml, respectively.  Based on MBC/MIC ratio, the extract has some degree of bactericidal effect. However, the results were not competitive with the standard drug (Chloramphenicol). Conclusion: As a result, the tested methanol extract of male flowers of date palm tree exhibited some degree of antibacterial activity with a bactericidal property. More future studies such as fractionation process are required to isolate and investigate its bioactive compounds.
