Flat foot can be classified as a foot with collapsed or minimally developed longitudinal arches. Another term used for flat foot is pes planus in which the medial longitudinal arch of the foot has collapsed. The frequency of flat foot is not explained properly as there is a lack of comprehensive definition, better method to classify and proper radiographic criteria for defining a flat foot. Due to obesity, there is an increase in forces at weight-bearing areas of the lower limb and feet. Long term continuous loading effect, specifically related to the feet region due to obesity, has not been extensively evaluated. To find the association of flat foot with obesity in middle-aged Individuals. A total of 120 subjects in the age range of 30 to 50 years were recruited with 60 subjects in each two groups formed on the basis of BMI indexes as Group A (Normal with BMI score 17.5 – 22.99) and Group B (Obese with BMI score >28). Navicular Drop Test and Waist/Hip ratio were measured using Brody’s method and inch tape method, respectively and the correlation between Navicular drop and W/H ratio was evaluated thereafter in both the groups. The result of the study demonstrated that there is a statistically significant positive correlation between navicular drop test and W/H ratio in both the groups, with a stronger association in the obese group (r=0.7 at p=0.05). This study concluded that there is a strong correlation between flat foot and body weight in middle-aged individuals. Hence individuals should be physically active to maintain their body weight in order to avoid any biomechanical alteration in feet structures.

Background: When one malleolus was lower than the other malleoli and calcaneal eversion with depressed medial longitudinal arch, pronated sub-talar joint and calcaneus assuming a valgus position underweight bearing condition, known as flatfoot or Pes Planus. Generally 20-30 % of the population between the age group 18-25 had the characteristic of a Pes Planus also known as flat foot. The intent of this experiment was to investigate the effect of 4 week Short Foot Exercise Program on intrinsic foot muscles leading to improvement in performance grade classified as from fair to good. Method: An experimental study conducted at Dr. D.Y. Patil College of physiotherapy, Pimpri, Pune comprising of 30 individuals using Simple Random sampling. Participants were divided into two groups 15 participant each Group A(15) was Conventional Therapy and Group B(15) was Short Foot Exercise progression. The subjects were each given a consent form. The purpose of the study was explained to all the participants and an informed consent was taken from each subject. Navicular Drop Test (r=0.92) was used as an Outcome Measure. Results: There was clinically and statistically significant difference in Group B(Short Foot Exercise Progression) than Group A(Conventional Therapy) (p<0.005 and mean of group A more than B) pre and post 2nd Week treatment and Post 4th week Treatment. Conclusion: The Short Foot Exercise is more effective in improving Medial Longitudinal Arch intrinsic muscle activation as compare to Conventional Group. The 4 week Short foot exercise program improved foot intrinsic muscle activity in people with flat foot. However Group B that is Short Foot Exercises shows better improvement in medial longitudinal arch than Group A That is Conventional Group. This study involved the collection of (90) samples of women serum which included (30) serum samples collected from women before menopause (reproductive women) in the age range of (22-43) years and were considered as (group A- control). While, (group B) included (30) serum samples collected from women using oral contraceptive pills between the ages of (22-43) years old. Whereas, another (30) serum samples were collected from women after menopause between the ages of (43-54) years and were considered as (group C). All of the collected serum samples were subjected to a number of serological and chemical tests for the measurement of (E2, HDL, LDL and Ca). Then, the obtained data were statistical analyzed and results showed a significant decrease (p˂ 0.05) in (E2 ,Ca and HDL) levels in menopausal women compared to that of the normal healthy controls. While, there were non-significant decrease (p> 0.05) in (E2, Ca and HDL) levels in women taking oral contraceptive when compared to the normal healthy controls. On the other hand, a significant increase (p˂ 0.05) was recorded in LDL level in menopausal women compared to that of the normal healthy controls whereas, no-significant increase (p˃ 0.05) in the LDL level in women taking oral contraceptives when compared to the control women.

Background: Treatment of distal tibial metaphyseal fractures is often challenging and no single technique has been unanimously advocated. Open reduction and internal fixation with plates and screws allows better restoration of anatomical alignment but with more soft tissue complication. Simultaneous fixation of the fibula is not universally carried out. This study aims at evaluation of the outcome of plating technique and the effect of fixation of fibula fracture in treatment of distal tibial metaphyseal fractures. Material and methods: Thirty-one cases (14 cases in Group A with concomitant distal fibula fracture and 17 cases in Group B without distal fibula fracture) were analyzed retrospectively for the mean duration of full weight bearing, mean union time and complications, and compared. Results: The mean time for full weight bearing and radiological union in our study was 14.2 weeks (15.9 in Group A and 13.1 in Group B) and 23.8 weeks (26.6 in Group A and 21.5 in Group B) respectively. 16.1% of cases had post-operative complications including one case of deep infection and malalignment of 6 degree varus (following delayed union) was seen in one case of Group A. Range of motion (ROM) at ankle was not problem in any of the cases except the one delayed union which had 5 degrees of dorsiflexion and 15 degrees of plantiflexion. Conclusion: Open reduction and internal fixation with plate and screws in distal tibial metaphyseal fracture is more economic means of treatment modality with comparable incidence of post-union malalignment and union time,though more soft tissue complications compared to other modalities. Fixation of fibula fracture aids in reducing the incidence of malalignment.

Aim of study: The aim of the study was to compare the immediate effect on application of remote self- myofascial release on posterior chain exibility in asymptomatic young individuals. Material and Method: 44 subjects were assigned into two groups, Group (A) Plantar fascia release and Group (B) Suboccipital release. Outcomes measures used were Sit and reach test (SRT), Active knee extension test (AKE) and Weight bearing lunge test. Result: There was a signicant difference in SRT and AKE on left side between group A and B. Within the same group there was a signicant improvement in outcome measures post intervention. Conclusion: There was an immediate increase in exibility of the hamstrings, gastrocnemius-soleus muscles and lumbar spine ROM through remote self- myofascial release.

Background. There is no established principle regarding weight-bearing in conservative and operative management of fifth metatarsal base fractures. Methods. We reviewed 86 patients with acute fifth metatarsal base fractures. Conservatively treated late or early weight-bearing patients were assigned to Group A or C, respectively. Operatively treated late or early weight-bearing patients were assigned to Group B or D, respectively. Results were evaluated by clinical union, bone resorption, and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores. Results. All 4 groups had bone union at a mean of 6.9 weeks (range, 5.1–15.0). There were no differences between the groups in the AOFAS and VAS scores. In the early weight-bearing groups, there were fewer cases of bone resorption, and the bone unions periods were earlier. Conclusions. Early weight-bearing may help this patient population. Moreover, conservative treatment could be an option in patients with underlying diseases.

Background: The extract of Corchorus olitorius has a reasonable content of vitamins A and C, calcium, iron and fibre, and therefore enjoys a universal application in the treatment of some disease conditions, even as the whole leaf is a very important component of food in so many cultures. Purpose: The study was designed to investigate the effect of Corchorus olitorius extracts on the testis of adult Wistar rats. Method: A total number of thirty two adult Wistar rats weighing between 180 and 200 grammes separated into four groups labeled A,B,C and D respectively were used for the study. Animals in group A which served as the control group were fed with the normal rat chow and water only. The group B rats were administered 100mg/kg body weight of aqueous extract of Corchorus olitorus; while those in group C were administered 500mg/kg body weight of the extract. The group D rats received 1000mg/kg body weight of the extract. For a period of four weeks, the different experimental animal groups received the respective aforementioned treatments once daily, around nine- o’clock in the morning through oral intubation. At the end of the 28 day treatment, the animals were sacrificed and the testes harvested for histological, investigation, and through cardiac puncture, blood samples for some hormonal studies was also collected and investigated using standard laboratory standards. Results: Observations made showed that the extract produced no histological distortions, degenerative or defective effects on the testicular tissues. BACKGROUND: Peptic ulcer is mostly produced due to the over production of gastric acid. This studywas undertaken to find out the effects of extract from the fruits of medicinal plant Ammi visnaga andseeds of Myristica fragrans (both of which contain documented natural Calcium channel blockers) onvolume and acidity of Carbachol induced gastric section. Their effects were also compared to find outany difference in their effect.DESIGN: Quasi experimental.PLACE & DURATION OF STUDY: Pharmacology Department Saidu Medical College Swat.METHODS: Thirty rabbits of local breed, weighing 1-1.5kg were used. The animals were kept onfasting for 48 hours, after which the pylorus of each animal was ligated. Carbachol 600iig/kg wasinjected to group A Extracts of Ammi visnaga and Myristica fragrans 500 mg/kg body weight each andafter 15 minutes Carbachol 600jlg/kg body weight was administered to group B & C intraperitoneally.RESULTS: It was found that both the extracts reduced the volume, free and total acidity of gastricsecretion, which were statistically highly significant when compared with Carbachol ( PcO.OOl). Whenthe differences of means for both the extracts were compared, all these were found statistically nonsignificant indicating that the extracts have similar effects on all parameters included in study.CONCLUSION: The extracts can be used effectively and safely in the treatment of hyper acidityconditions and peptic ulcer after evaluation of their effects in human.KEY WORDS: Ammi visnaga & Myristica fragrans, gastric secretion.

BACKGROUND Flat foot, depletion of medial longitudinal arch affects almost 20% of adult global population; approximately 9-14% of schools going children are flat foot making the gender wise prevalence of about 13% girls and 7% boys, 11.25% population of age group between 18-25 years are diagnosed as flat footed. AIM The focus of this study is to device best possible strategy for the nurses to overcome their deformity and live as normal and pain free professional life as possible by providing foot supports that bring foot arches to normal or near normal position. METHOD The subjects were divided into two groups. Group A and Group B. Group A was asked to wear medial wedge support and group B was prescribed heel support for 3 weeks. RESULTS Result shows that both the orthosis are useful in forming the arch of foot, improving the dynamic balance and relieving the symptoms of flatfoot but medial wedge is found to be more efficient as compared to heel support.

Early detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and early aggressive treatment are recommended to delay chronic infection in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. The aim of this study was to assess a quantitative PCR (q-PCR) assay for the diagnosis of early P. aeruginosa colonization in 23 young CF patients (group A, age range 7–18 years) and to survey the eradication of P. aeruginosa in 10 young CF patients (group B, age range 5–18 years) after an initial antibiotic treatment. q-PCR results for consecutive sputum samples from each patient during a period of 18 months were compared with bacterial cultures during the same period plus an additional period of 12 months, and with concomitant clinical signs of pulmonary exacerbation. The q-PCR and bacterial cultures were negative for 17 of the 23 patients in group A and six of the 10 patients in group B during the study period. However, consecutive positive q-PCR results were observed for one patient in group A and three patients in group B, while the bacterial cultures for the same sputum sample remained negative. They preceded positive P. aeruginosa bacterial cultures at 7 and 8 months for two patients in group B. These positive results were associated with a worsening of the clinical status of patients, but pulmonary exacerbation appeared non-specific for the diagnosis of early P. aeruginosa colonization since pulmonary exacerbations were observed in patients in whom q-PCR or bacterial culture remained negative. In conclusion, q-PCR may be a useful additional tool to provide information on the P. aeruginosa status of CF patients.

Background: Fracture repair is one of most common procedure carried out by veterinary clinicians. Fracture healing most of the time associated with delayed union, non-union and mal-uinon. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical, haemato-biochemical and radiological outcome in patients after implantation of β-tricalcium phosphate as a bone graft substitute to promote the fracture healing.Methods: Eight clinical cases brought to the clinics with femur fracture were divided into two groups viz. A and B, with four animals in each group. Femur fractures were stabilized with intramedullary pinning and β-TCP biomaterial and intramedullary pinning and β-TCP plus autologous bone marrow aspirate (BMA) composite in group A and B respectively. The efficacy of fixation was studied on the basis of clinical evaluation, haemato-biochemical and radiographical parameters on day 0 and on 7th, 15th, 30th, 45th and 60th post-operative day. Result: Excellent weight bearing was noticed in group B. The overall functional outcome in group B was better in comparison to group A animals. Haematological parameters viz. haemoglobin, packed cell volume, total leukocyte count and differential leukocyte count did not differ significantly within and between the groups. The biochemical parameters viz. serum calcium increased significantly (P less than 0.05) on 7th and 15th post-operative day. A significant reduction in serum alkaline phosphatase level observed on successive post-operative days in both groups. Radiographs of fractures treated in both the groups showed good reduction and fracture fixation, early signs of fracture healing in group B than group A animals. The size of callus formation was more in group A than group B. No any graft related complications observed during the study period. The β-tricalcium phosphate facilitated fracture healing and early ambulation of affected limb.
