Background: The extract of Corchorus olitorius has a reasonable content of vitamins A and C, calcium, iron and fibre, and therefore enjoys a universal application in the treatment of some disease conditions, even as the whole leaf is a very important component of food in so many cultures. Purpose: The study was designed to investigate the effect of Corchorus olitorius extracts on the testis of adult Wistar rats. Method: A total number of thirty two adult Wistar rats weighing between 180 and 200 grammes separated into four groups labeled A,B,C and D respectively were used for the study. Animals in group A which served as the control group were fed with the normal rat chow and water only. The group B rats were administered 100mg/kg body weight of aqueous extract of Corchorus olitorus; while those in group C were administered 500mg/kg body weight of the extract. The group D rats received 1000mg/kg body weight of the extract. For a period of four weeks, the different experimental animal groups received the respective aforementioned treatments once daily, around nine- o’clock in the morning through oral intubation. At the end of the 28 day treatment, the animals were sacrificed and the testes harvested for histological, investigation, and through cardiac puncture, blood samples for some hormonal studies was also collected and investigated using standard laboratory standards. Results: Observations made showed that the extract produced no histological distortions, degenerative or defective effects on the testicular tissues. Background: Yogurt is basically fermented milk that is heated and mixed with two types of body friendly bacteria. It is very nutritious and therefore, it is being eaten by all and sundry. Purpose: The study was designed to determine the effect of yogurt on the liver of adult Wister rats. Method: A total of twenty four adzult Wister rats bred and harboured at the animal house of Anatomy and Neurobiology department, Imo State University Owerri were used for the study. The rats which weighed between 180 and 220 grammes were separated and housed in four different cages marked A, B, C and D. Each cage contained four rats. The group A served as control group and so received only the normal rat feed and water. Group B rats were administered 2500mg/kg body weight of yogurt; group C received 5000mg/kg body weight of yogurt why group D was given 10000mg/kg body weight of yogurt, all through oral intubation for four weeks. At the end of the four week treatment, the rats were anesthetized in chloroform vapour and the liver was dissected out for histological investigations. Results: On examining the processed liver tissue, it was observed that there was a mild (for group B), moderate (for group C), and serve (for group D) lymphocyte infiltration on the liver portal tract when compared to the control group which showed very little presence of haepatocytes around a central venule. The effect observed could be described to be dose dependent.

Background: The plant, Corchorus olitorius is consumed by many tribes and cultures for both nutritional and therapeutic purposes. Purpose: The study was therefore designed to investigate, evaluate and unravel the possible effects of the plant extract on the sperm count and sperm motility. Method: A total number of thirty two adult Wistar rats weighing between 180 and 200 g separated into four groups labeled A,B,C and D respectively were used for the study. Animals in group A which served as the control group were fed with the normal rat chow and water only. The group B rats were administered 100mg/kg body weight of aqueous extract of Corchorus olitorius; while those in group C were administered 500mg/kg body weight of the extract. The group D rats received 1000mg/kg body weight of the extract. For a period of four weeks, the different experimental animal groups received the respective aforementioned treatments once daily, around nine- o’clock in the morning through oral intubation. At the end of the 28 day treatment, the rats were sacrificed and the testes and accompanying epididymis harvested for investigations using standard laboratory standards. Results: Surprisingly, semen analysis showed that group B, C and D rats had an improved and increased sperm motility rate over group (A). Again, there was a pronounced significant increase in the average sperm count of the rats treated with varying doses of Corchorus olitorius leaf extract over that of the control group, a development that appeared to be dose dependent.

Effects of Ganoderma lucidum (Gl) and Krestin (PSK) extracts on spleen, thymus and splenocytes in γ-irradiated mice were investigated in this study. ICR strain male mice were divided into five groups. Group A was the normal control. Group B, the experimental control, was treated with Gl. Group C, the radiation treatment control, was treated with whole body exposure to 4 Gy γ-irradiation (RT). Group D was treated with RT and Gl. Group E was treated with RT and PSK. The dosage of Gl was 400 mg/day/kg body weight and PSK was 500 mg/day/kg body weight. Our results indicated that the relative thymus weight in groups D and E were higher than group C on day 28 after γ-irradiation. Group D was the highest in all the experimental groups. CD4 and CD8 splenocytes in group D were higher than group C on days 7 and 28. Gl was better than PSK in repairing the damage of subset T-cells in the spleen of γ-irradiated mice.

Abstract Introduction: Calabash chalk is a naturally occurring mineral, chiefly composed of fossilized sea shells. It is prepared from clay and mud mixed with other ingredients, including lead, arsenic, sand and wood ash. Clay consumption is correlated with pregnancy, and also to eliminate morning sickness in women. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of calabash chalk on the ovarian function in adult female Wistar rats. Methods: Eighteen (18) adult female Wistar rats. Group A served as the control group, group B received 40 mg/kg body weight of Non-salted calabash chalk while group C received 40 mg/kg body weight of Salted calabash chalk for 14 days. On day 15, the animals were sacrificed for histological and biochemical examination. Results: Results showed a significant (P< 0.05) reduction in follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels of the treatment groups when compared with the control group and an increase in luteinizing hormone (LH) levels of the treatment groups when compared with the control group. Histological examination of the ovaries showed severe deterioration of the ovarian follicles, necrosis and follicular atresia. Conclusion: Calabash chalk is toxic to ovarian function. These alterations have been shown to be the leading cause ofinfertility in female rats. Hence, proper monitoring, education, and regulation of the product is needed.

Abstract: Cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmannii) is a traditional herbal plants which are often found in our daily life and has many benefits especially in health. This study were designed to know the effect of cinnamon on gastric mucosa given aspirin. This was an experimental research and used Wistar rats as the subject research.  The Wistar rats were randomly divided into 6 mice of control group and 9 mice of treatment group. Group A (K-) given pellets, group B (K+) given pellets and aspirin 150 mg/kgBB for 7 days, group C given pellets, aspirin 150 mg/kgBB and cinnamon extract 3 mg for 3 days, group D given pellets, aspirin 150 mg/kgBB for 7 days and given cinnamon extract 3 mg for 3 days, group E given pellets, aspirin 150 mg/kgBB for 7 days and given pellets only (without treatment) for 3 days. The results showed that aspirin cause gastric mucosa damage in group B (K+) compared with kelompok A (K-). Group C and D showed less inflammatory cells compared with group B (K+). Group E showed more inflammatory cells compared with group D. The study suggested that cinnamon extract has protective and therapeutic effects on gastric mucosa of Wistar rats. Keywords: cinnamon, gaster, aspirin.   Abstrak: Kayu manis (Cinnamomum burmannii) merupakan tanaman herbal tradisional yang banyak dijumpai dalam kehidupan sehari- hari dan memiliki banyak manfaat termasuk dalam bidang kesehatan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada efek pemberian kayu manis terhadap mukosa lambung yang diberi aspirin. Desain Penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode eksperimental dan subjek penelitian menggunakan tikus Wistar, yang terbagi atas 6 ekor kontrol dan 9 ekor perlakuan. Kelompok A (K-) diberikan pelet selama 7 hari, kelompok B (K+) diberikan pelet dan aspirin 150mg/kgBB selama 7 hari, kelompok C diberikan pelet, aspirin 150 mg/kgBB, ekstrak kayu manis 3 mg secara bersama- sama selama 7 hari, kelompok D diberikan pelet dan Aspirin 150 mg/kgBB selama 7 hari dilanjutkan dengan pemberian ekstrak kayu manis 3 mg selama 3 hari, kelompok E diberikan pelet dan Aspirin 150 mg/kgBB selama 7 hari dilanjutkan dengan pemberian pelet saja (tanpa perlakuan) selama 3 hari. Hasilnya menunjukkan aspirin menimbulkan kerusakan mukosa lambung pada kelompok B (K+) dibandingkan dengan kelompok A (K-). Kelompok C dan D menunjukkan sel-sel radang yang lebih sedikit dari kelompok B(kontrol +). Kelompok E menunjukkan sel- sel radang yang lebih banyak dibandingkan dengan kelompok D. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah kayu manis mempunyai efek protektif dan terapeutik terhadap mukosa lambung tikus Wistar. Kata kunci: kayu manis, lambung, aspirin.

Abstrak: Gastritis akut merupakan proses inflamasi yang bersifat akut dan biasanya terjadi pada bagian permukaan mukosa lambung. Penyakit ini biasanya disebabkan karena banyak faktor salah satunya yaitu penggunaan asam mefenamat dalam dosis yang berlebihan. Pada penelitian yang telah dilakukan sebelumnya didapatkan bahwa lengkuas dapat mengurangi terjadinya radang akut. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui gambaran histopatologi lambung tikus wistar yang diberikan lengkuas setelah diinduksi dengan asam mefenamat. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode eksperimental dengan sampel 11 ekor tikus wistar yang dibagi dalam 4 kelompok perlakuan. Kelompok A tidak diberikan perlakuan. Kelompok B diberikan asam mefenamat 10 mg selama 7 hari. Kelompok C diberikan asam mefenamat 10 mg selama 7 hari kemudian diberikan perasan lengkuas selama 7 hari. Kelompok D diberikan asam mefenamat 10 mg kemudian tidak diberikan perlakuan selama 7 hari. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa gambaran mikroskopik lambung tikus wistar pada kelompok C terdapat sel-sel radang PMN yang lebih sedikit dibandingkan dengan kelompok B dan D. Simpulan: lengkuas dapat mengurangi sel-sel radang PMN pada mukosa lambung yang diberikan dengan asam mefenamat. Kata kunci: Lengkuas, Asam Mefenamat, Gastritis akut.   Abstract : acute gastritis is an acute inflammatory process normally occurring in the mucosal lining of the stomach. This disease is caused by a variety of factors, one of which is the use of mefenamat acid in large doses. Previous research has revealed that galangal can be used to reduce acute inflammation. The objective of this research was to reveal the histopathological pictures of stomach of wistar rats that treatment with galangal after induce by mefenamat acid. This study is an experimental, employing 11 wistar rats which were assigned for four treatment groups. Group A was the control group in which the rats received no treatment. Rats in group B were administered mefenamat acid 10 mg for 7 days. In group C, the rats were also administered mefenamat acid 10 mg for 7 days and then received galangal distillation for 7 days. In group D, rats were administered mefenamat acid 10 mg for 7 days and then for 7 days without receiving anymore mefenamat acid or galangal distillation. Results showed that microscopic pictures of stomach of wistar rats in group C were presented with PMN inflammatory cells fewer than rats in group B and D. Conclusion: galangal can reduce PMN inflammatory cells in mucosal lining of the stomach exposed to mefenamat acid. Key words: galangal, mefenamat acid,  acute gastritis.

Introduction The aim of this study was aimed at evaluating the effects of lead nitrate on adult wistar rats.Methodology A total of 32 adult wistar rats weighing between 200 and 240g were divided into 4 groups of 8 rats per group. The control groups (group A) were placed on normal diet, while Group B rats received 35mg/ kg body weight / day of lead nitrate via orogastric tube. Group C rats received 45mg / kg body weight/ day of lead nitrate via orogastric tube. Group D rats received 50 mg/ kg body weight/ day of lead nitrate via orogastric tube and all the dosage were given for 40 days.Results The results in group A, B, C and D showed normal histologic testicular architecture as evidenced by normal seminiferous tubules and interstitial spaces in figure 1, 2, 3 and 4.Conclusion It was concluded that lead nitrate at 35mg/kg, 45mg/kg and 50mg/kg body weight/day was not toxic to the testis of an adult Wistar rats.

Background: Cadmium is a human carcinogen element and one of the most toxic pollutants in the environment. Present study aims at histomorphological study of some of the effects of Moringa oleifera oil and cashew (Anarcardium occidentale) nuts oil on Cadmium-induced liver damage in wistar rats. Methods: Thirty-five Wistar rats (80-180 g) were randomly selected and divided into seven groups of five rats each after acclimatization for two weeks. Group A which served as control received phosphate buffer, Group B received Cadmium only (3.5 mg/kg body weight). Group C received Vitamin C and Vitamin E; Group D received Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Cadmium. Group E received Cadmium and Moringa oleifera oil, Group F received Cadmium and Cashew nut oil and Group G received Cadmium (3.5 mg/kg body weight) and Moringa oleifera oil and Cashew (Anarcardium occidentale) nut oil. Results: Histological examination revealed normal histo-architecture of the liver, the central vein and the hepatocytes were seen clearly and there was orderly arrangement of the hepatocytes in Group A (control group). In group B, there was enlarged portal vein and there was distorted arrangement of the hepatocytes. In group C, the hepatocytes and the central vein were seen. In group D, the central vein and hepatocytes were seen though not orderly arranged. In groups E, F and G, there was restoration of the hepatocytes and the central vein was seen. Conclusion: This therefore suggests that Moringa oleifera oil and Cashew (Anarcardium occidentale) nut oil have ameliorative effects which led to the restoration of the damaged and distorted hepatocytes.

The action of the enzymic inhibitor Trasylol upon shock from occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) in forty-six dogs, arranged in four groups, has been studied. In Group A of controls (thirteen dogs) an intestinal ischaemia of 31/2 hours duration was produced. After removal of the arterial occlusion, shock was produced in eleven dogs, which died within the first 24 hours. A frequent finding at autopsy was haemorrhagic infiltration of the intestinal mucosa and the occurrence of haemorrhagic contents in the intestinal lumen. Histologically, frequent findings were capillary distension and hyperaemia, perivascular haemorrhagic infiltration and superficial or total necrosis of the intestinal mucosa. In Group B (ten dogs), Group C (ten dogs) and Group D (thirteen dogs), the experimental arrangement was similar to that in Group A, except for Trasylol administration. An infusion of Trasylol, 30,000 units/kg body-weight intravenously 10 minutes before occlusion of the artery was given to the experimental animals of Group B, while a second infusion of 30,000 units/kg body-weight into the superior mesenteric artery or intravenously was given to the experimental animals of Group C and Group D, respectively, 10 minutes before the removal of arterial occlusion. The results in Group B were a little better in comparison with those of the controls, but the differences were not statistically significant. On the contrary, significant differences were seen with Group C and Group D. Shock was produced in a small number of experimental animals. Over 50% of the experimental animals survived. The intestinal alterations seen at autopsy and histologically were about the same as in the control group, but at a clearly lower frequency. It is concluded that the administration of enzymic inhibitors may eventually have a practical application in situations of re-establishment of mesenteric circulation after its acute interruption.

Introduction: The study aims to evaluate the anti-hyperglycaemic effect of turmeric and the histological changes in the pancreas of adult Wistar rats. Materials and Methods: Forty adult Wistar rats were divided into four groups of [A-D] ten rats per group. Group A was normal control, group B was diabetic control, group C was treated with 300mg/kg weight of extract and group D was 500mg/kg body weight. All animals had access to food and water ad libitum.  Aqueous extract of turmeric was administered orally, once daily for 14 days. The rats were then anaesthetized with dichloromethane before sacrifice and sample collection. Pancreatic tissues were processed, stained using the hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) method. Blood glucose estimation was determined using the glucose oxidase method. Results: The mean body weights of the rats across groups were not statistically significant. Similarly, blood glucose levels across groups revealed a progressive statistically significant increase from group A to D and from day one to day 17. Pairwise comparison of group A with B, C and D showed a statistically significant increase but a comparison of Group B with C and D were not significant. Discussion: There was progressive body weight increase of the rats from day one to the final day across all groups and reduction in the blood glucose levels of the animals treated with 300mg/kg and 500mg/kg body weights, after seven days of treatment, but these, progressively increased with time even with treatment. The overall pancreas features indicate moderate inflammatory changes. Keywords: turmeric, anti- hyperglycemia, alloxan, Wistar rats
