Khok Phanom Di is a prehistoric site located in Central Thailand. Excavations there were undertaken in 1985, and this the third of a series of volumes reporting the results of these investigations. This volume considers the non-ceramic artefacts, including fishing implements, weaving equipment and stone tools.

The Introduction sheds light on the reception of classical poetry by focusing on the materiality of the poets’ bodies and their tombs. It outlines four sets of issues, or commonplaces, that govern the organization of the entire volume. The first concerns the opposition between literature and material culture, the life of the mind vs the apprehensions of the body—which fails to acknowledge that poetry emerges from and is attended to by the mortal body. The second concerns the religious significance of the tomb and its location in a mythical landscape which is shaped, in part, by poetry. The third investigates the literary graveyard as a place where poets’ bodies and poetic corpora are collected. Finally, the alleged ‘tomb of Virgil’ provides a specific site where the major claims made in this volume can be most easily be tested.

The Hawaiian Islands are the most isolated inhabited archipelago in the world. Initially colonized around A.D. 1000, the environmental gradients of rainfall and island-age have influenced subsequent cultural variation and differentiation in the islands. Settlements are typically dispersed hamlets and integrated within agricultural facilities such as irrigated pondfields and dryland field systems. Populations were politically organized in idealized pie-shaped units or ahupua`a that typically encompass a cross-section of island resources. Material culture , including fishhooks, stone tools, and religious temples, is broadly similar within these units, but there is also much evidence for elite control of specialized production in some areas. The Hawaiian Islands are the archetypal chiefdom society, although based on changes in demography, monumental architecture (heiau) and royal centers, intensive agriculture, and divine kingship, the population had likely crossed the threshold of sociopolitical complexity to that of an archaic state prior to the arrival of Europeans in 1778.

This research aims to classify and describe the material culture elements contained in Okky Madasari’s novel Entrok. The research problem includes the classification of material culture elements which only exist in Indonesia, and most of them are related to Javanese culture. This research was a qualitative descriptive research. The data were in the form of words and phrases obtained from Okky Madasari’s Entrok. The result showed that there were six elements of material culture. The most commonly found material culture element was food, the second was house, the third was clothes, and the least found were vehicle, daily equipment, and art tool. The use of material culture elements in literary works, such as novel, not only improves the aesthetic value of the work, but also can be used as a media of education, so that the literary work enthusiasts can recognize better and are able to preserve the cultures in Indonesia.

This article discusses the results of archaeological and anthropological research concerning material remains of a prisoner of war camp in Czersk (Pomeranian province, Poland) (Kriegsgefangenenlager Czersk). In the first part, I sketch a broader historical context related to building and functioning of the camp in forests around Czersk between 1914–1919. After that, the role and meaning of  archaeological research on such type of archaeological sites are presented. In the third part, I focus on a very special category of the camp heritage which is called trench art. The last part of this paper is a case study where an assemblage of objects classified as trench art that was found at the camp is described and interpreted. This text aims at highlighting the value of such prisoners and camp’s heritage. Such material culture is a material memory of extraordinary prisoners’ creativity behind barbed wire. It makes one aware of how every piece of trash, rubbish was re-cycled during day-to-day life behind barbed wire.

AbstractPaleolithic remains, mostly surface finds from blowouts, are known from 63 sites in the Trans-Baikal, one of the five large regional subdivisions of the Siberian Paleolithic. Most important recent discoveries are the stratified sites of Oshurkovo and Sannyi Mys and the Pleistocene faunal sequence on Tologoi Mountain. Characteristic stone tools are made from whole or split pebbles and from blades removed from prismatic cores. Bone artifacts, known only from Oshurkovo, include slotted points and knives and flat antler harpoons. The Trans-Baikal finds, all Upper Paleolithic in time, are tentatively arranged in five chronological stages. The earliest period is based on the lower levels at Sannyi Mys in which microblades, but no pebble tools, are found with woolly rhinoceros and mammoth. The next period is represented by large pebble tools and cores from Ust"-Kiakhta Locality 3. Typical Siberian pebble tools found with horse in the upper levels at Sannyi Mys are assigned to the third stage. The fourth is best known from Oshurkovo where all the common Siberian Paleolithic stone tools are found along with bone artifacts in deposits which contain abundant fish bones. A number of sites are assigned to the fifth stage, but it is best represented by the uppermost level at Oshurkovo where flakes, flaked pebbles, and small blade tools of regular outline replace the large blades and pebble cores of the earlier periods. This tentative sequence is strengthened by correlations with the Angara and Yenisei areas to the west and with Mongolia and North China to the east. The Trans-Baikal is seen as an area in which the prismatic core and blade tradition of Eurafrican origin and the split pebble-tool tradition of eastern Asia were in contact from the earliest known period.

The focus of this article is stone tools. The history of stone tool research is linked integrally to the history of archaeology and the study of the human past, and many of the early developments in archaeology were connected with the study of stone artefacts. The identification of stone tools as objects of prehistoric human manufacture was central to the development of nineteenth-century models of prehistoric change, and especially the Three Age system for Old World prehistory. This article draws on concepts derived from interdisciplinary material culture studies to consider the role of the artefact after being discarded. It suggests that it is impossible to understand the meaning or efficacy of stone tools without understanding their ‘afterlives’ following abandonment. This article aims to complement contemporary metrical studies of the identification of stone tools and the description of their production. A brief history of the stone tools is explained and this concludes the article.

This article revolves around the discovery of matter. The first section concerns science studies. It emphasizes the importance of a focus on practice and performance as a way of undoing the ‘linguistic turn’ in the humanities and social sciences. The key concept here is that of a dance of agency. The second section reviews a variety of examples of this dance in fields beyond the natural sciences — civil engineering, pig farming, and convivial relations with dogs, architecture, technologies of the self, biological computing, brainwave music, and certain hylozoist and Eastern spirituality. This article focuses on contrasting forms that dances of agency and their products can take, depending on the presence or absence of an organizing telos of self-extinction. The third and final section reflects on the significance of this contrast for a politics of theory. This article traces the discovery of matter followed by the concepts of method, time, and agency.

This chapter is in three sections. The first sets out the proposition that movements in ancient oral, written and material culture themselves involved reception and refiguration of material from inside and outside the Hellenic and Roman world. The second section looks at some aspects of these receptions and at the scholarly and critical tools which were developed in association with them and which have often set the parameters for subsequent investigation and evaluation. The third section identifies some important examples of how different aspects of reception within antiquity have contributed to the patterns of reception with which scholars and practitioners have engaged in subsequent periods. Overall, the model used is one which will be taken forward in later chapters of the book. It consists of an axis between reception as activity, as ‘doing’, ‘making’, ‘responding’ and ‘creating’ and reception as selecting, analysing and evaluating. The points of intersection are many but the more divergent areas of the model are also significant and may also contribute to dialogue between ancient and modern. Many critical terms and categories set out in the ancient world have fed into modern systems and in turn many aspects of modern practice, of reception ‘activity’, have prompted further analysis of cultural practices in the ancient world.

It has been discussed that Pyeonggeo-dong site has the Northeastern factor but the characteristics of potteries are closed to the c factor, and the native ‘Pyeonggeodong double-rimmed pottery’ were dominated. However, some potteries of BAL styled pottery as well as pot styled pottery that were characterized by its rim of pottery, made of the same techniques, were found. There are BAL styled pottery and pot styled potteries that were not made with folded rim of pottery and attached clay ribbon. In addition to these potteries, not- doble rimmed pot typed pottery, little pottery, beak styled stoneware, chipped stone hole, polished stone knife, oval pestle, disk styled stoneware, etc. are the main factors found in Sinigai culture of Maritime Province. I believe that the reason why Pyeonggeo-dong is considered as the filiation of the Sinigai culture of Maritime Province is because that Sinigai culture has been not well known. Therefore, I want to review that culture in this paper. Sinigai culture has been studied only for its regional boundary and characteristics. However, it is needed to review the chronological change of the potteries and start period of the culture and then compare to Pyeonggeo-dong site. Sinigai culture can be divided in to two types in each region, the West and East, based on chronological order and artifacts. The West 1 type had lasted from 3,400 to 3,200 years ago when people still used Neolithic potteries and started to make MOOMOON pottery. DOLDAEMOON pottery with pattern neolithic, one handle pottery, big pottery, polished stone dagger, polished stone ax, stoneware shaped star, disk styled stoneware, chipped stone hole, etc. were used at the same timew. The West 2 type lasted from 3,200 to 2,500 years ago. This is dwelling pit of square-shaped fire pot with stone and foundation in HARIN site. DOLDAEMOON pottery with pattern neolithic, pot withwith pattern neolithic on the surface, one handle pottery, BAL styled pottery, pot styled pottery, bottle styled pottery etc. are MOOMOON pottery. There are difference in their types based on the length of rim and neck in pot styled pottery and bottle styled pottery. In terms of the stone tools, there are oval pestle, stoneware shaped arrow, polished stone spear, polished stone knife, disk styled stoneware, chipped stone hole, etc. The East 1 type had lasted from 3,300 to 3,000 years ago. The symbolic potteries of this type are pot styled pottery with folded rim of pottery, BAL styled pottery with attached clay ribbon Knapped stone tools had been continuously used while the ground axe were appeared. The East 2 type lasted from 3,000 to 2,500 years ago. When it comes to dwelling pits, there are 3 rectangular fire pit, with foundation, and 4 lined pillar holes on the ground. notdoble rimmed pot styled pottery and bottle styled pottery are also found. People used various ground stone tools including stone axe, stoneware shaped arrow, stone arrow, polished stone spear, polished stone knife and etc. in addition to the knapped tools. BAL and pot styled pottery of doble rimm wth clay ribon, pot typed pottery with folded rim, and smaller potteries are related to the East 1 type of Sinigai culture. not-doble rimmed pot styled pottery rectangular mano, polished stone knife, chipped stone hole, etc are the factor of the West 2 type of Sinigai culture. Therefore, is can be considered that the material culture of Pyeongggeo-dong is combined with the East 1 type and the West 2 type of Sinigai culture. It is assumed that the Sinigai culture came to the west Gyeongnam Provinec continuouly from about 3,300 years ago until the second type that includes bronze artifacts. On the other hand, Daepyeong site located alongside of the Nam river has Gokok bronze which can be the earlier than Korea Liaoning bronze dagger. It is possible that the Gokok bronze was also a remain of Sinigai culture.
