This study describes the dental crown morphology of 91 Javanese of known sex and age, in Surabaya, East Java. The purpose was to explore the dental morphology in the area of East Java, especially in Surabaya. I scored a battery of three dozen dental traits on the permanent dentition (sexes pooled). Comparisons of the trait frequencies show that this Javanese sample does not exhibit a classic combination either of the Sinodont or Sundadont dental patterns. Instead, it represents some features of each, and this probably is due to the millennia of human migrations through this region.

Summary: Objectives: Determine the correlation of the frequency and variability of three Non-metricdental crown traits (Carabelli cusp, protostylid and molar pattern cusp) between deciduous (um2/lm2)and permanent (UM1/LM1) teeth in mixed-dentition subjects. Materials and methods: A descriptivestudy was conducted to determine the dental morphology in mixed dentition stage of young subjects.The Arizona State University Dental Anthropology System ASUDAS and Grind and Sciulli Methods wereused as reference to compare frequency of dental traits in dental casts of 100 young individualsracially mixed. Results: A high expression of furrows and pits of the Carabelli cusp, a highfrequency of protostylid in degree 1 (foramen secum) and a expression of molar pattern cusp,revealed that the studied population received influences of the Mongoloid and Caucasoid dentalcomplexes. Correspondence on the traits expression among temporal and permanent dentition was alsoconfirmed. Bilateral symmetry and sexual dimorphism in the analyzed non-metric dental crown traitswere found. Dental crown variation was studied inthe four main population groups living in Malaysiausing dental casts (upper and lower) obtained from 790individuals. The aims of the study were to characterizevariation in 13 dental crown traits, within groups as wellas between groups, and to assess affinities between thegroups based on frequencies of occurrence of dentalfeatures. Using chi-square analysis and Fisher’s exacttest, the majority of dental traits were found to bebilaterally symmetrical and to demonstrate low sexualdimorphism. Comparisons of trait frequencies betweengroups revealed similarities between Malays, Jahai(Negritos) and Chinese who conformed to MongoloidSinodont-Sundadont dental patterns, whereas theIndians conformed to an Indo-European pattern.Phenetic distance analysis, using the mean measureof divergence, showed that Indians were markedlyseparated from the other three groups, while Malayswere closer to Jahai than to Chinese. These findingsbased on dental traits are consistent with historicalexplanations of affinities between modern Malaysianpopulations.

Objectives: To determine the frequency, variability, sexual dimorphism and bilateral symmetry of fourteen dental crown traits in the deciduous and permanent dentition of 60 dental models (35 women and 25 men) obtained from a native, indigenous group of Nasa school children of the Musse Ukue group in the municipality of Morales, Department of Cauca, Colombia. Material and methods: This is a quantitative descriptive, cross-sectional study that characterizes dental morphology by means of the systems for temporary dentition from Dahlberg (winging), and ASUDAS (crowding, reduction of hypocone, metaconule and cusp 6), Hanihara (central and lateral incisors in shovel-shape and cusp 7), Sciulli (double bit, layered fold protostylid, cusp pattern and cusp number) and Grine (Carabelli trait); and in permanent dentition from ASUDAS (Winging, crowding, central and lateral incisors in shovel-shape and double shovel-shape, Carabelli trait, hypocone reduction, metaconule, cusp pattern, cusp number, layered fold protostylid, cusp 6 and cusp 7). Results: The most frequent dental crown features were the shovel-shaped form, grooved and fossa forms of the Carabelli trait, metaconule, cusp pattern Y6, layered fold, protostylid (point P) and cusp 6. Sexual dimorphism was not observed and there was bilateral symmetry in the expression of these features. Conclusions: The sample studied presented a great affinity with ethnic groups belonging to the Mongoloid Dental Complex due to the frequency (expression) and variability (gradation) of the tooth crown traits, upper incisors, the Carabelli trait, the protostylid, cusp 6 and cusp 7. The influence of the Caucasoide Dental Complex associated with ethno-historical processes cannot be ruled out.

AbstractThe Baka Pygmies are known for their short stature resulting from a reduced growth rate during infancy. They are peculiar also for their teeth erupt earlier than in any other African population, and their posterior dentition is larger than in non-Pygmy populations. However, the Baka’s dental morphology, like several other aspects of their biology, is still understudied. Here, we explore the variation of the Baka’s deciduous upper and lower second molars (dm2s) in comparison to a geographically heterogeneous human sample by means of 3D geometric morphometrics and analysis of dental traits. Our results show that the different populations largely overlap based on the shape of their dm2s, especially the lower ones. Their distal region and the height of the dentinal crown differ the most, with the Baka showing the most extreme range of variation. Upper and lower dm2s covary to a great extent (RV = 0.82). The Baka’s and South Americans’ dm2s were confirmed among the largest in our sample. Despite the Baka’s unique growth pattern, long-lasting isolation, and extreme dental variation, it is not possible to distinguish them from other populations based on their dm2s’ morphology only.

Researchers commonly rely on human dental morphological features in order to reconstruct genetic affinities among past individuals and populations, particularly since teeth are often the best preserved part of a human skeleton. Tooth form is considered to be highly heritable and selectively neutral and, therefore, to be an excellent proxy for DNA when none is available. However, until today, it remains poorly understood whether certain dental traits or trait combinations preserve neutral genomic signatures to a greater degree than others. Here, we address this long-standing research gap by systematically testing the utility of 27 common dental traits and >134 million possible trait combinations in reflecting neutral genomic variation in a worldwide sample of modern human populations. Our analyses reveal that not all traits are equally well-suited for reconstructing population affinities. Whereas some traits largely reflect neutral variation and therefore evolved primarily as a result of genetic drift, others can be linked to nonstochastic processes such as natural selection or hominin admixture. We also demonstrate that reconstructions of population affinity based on many traits are not necessarily more reliable than those based on only a few traits. Importantly, we find a set of highly diagnostic trait combinations that preserve neutral genetic signals best (up to x∼r = 0.580; 95% r range = 0.293 to 0.758; P = 0.001). We propose that these trait combinations should be prioritized in future research, as they allow for more accurate inferences about past human population dynamics when using dental morphology as a proxy for DNA.

Dental morphology changes dramatically across the artiodactyl-cetacean transition, and it is generally assumed that this reflects the evolutionary change from herbivory and omnivory to carnivory. To test hypotheses regarding tooth function and diet, we studied size and position of wear facets on the lower molars and the stable isotopes of enamel samples. We found that nearly all investigated Eocene cetaceans had dental wear different from typical wear in ungulates and isotope values indicating that they hunted similar prey and processed it similarly. The only exception is the protocetid Babiacetus, which probably ate larger prey with harder skeletons. The closest relative of cetaceans, the raoellid artiodactyl Indohyus, had wear facets that resemble those of Eocene cetaceans more than they do facets of basal artiodactyls. This is in spite of Indohyus's tooth crown morphology, which is unlike that of cetaceans, and its herbivorous diet, as indicated by stable isotopes. This implies that the evolution of masticatory function preceded that of crown morphology and diet at the origin of cetaceans.

  Aim: Characterize the permanent dentition morphology of a group of Afrodescendants of Istmina (Chocó, Colombia). Materials y methods: This quantitative cross-sectional study determined the frequency and variability of 35 incisor, canine, premolar and molar morphological features of the Arizona State University Dental Anthropology System in 100 self-described individuals as Afrodescendants (50 Female and 50 male), aged between 5 and 18 years. Results: Significant frequencies of winging (99%), double blade of the central incisors (86%), convexity of the lips (41%), crest of the shoulder (35%), and distal crest (39% to 45%) were identified (95% to 98%), central ridge (82% and 80%), mesolingual groove (79%), distolingual groove (81%), hippocampus reduction (86%), Carabelli cusp ) And cusp 7 (64%). No sexual dimorphism and bilateral asymmetry were found in the MCDS studied. Conclusions: The frequency and variability of the MCDD included in the dendrogram showed that the Isthmian group had a typical dental morphology of the Afrodescendant populations distributed on the Colombian Pacific coast, which were derived from groups of the West African coast included in The dental complex of Saharan Africa. Likewise, it was possible to detect the influence of mestizo and indigenous populations occupying the same geopolitical space.

Digitizing the third upper molars of Microtus pennsylvanicus reveals evolutionary change in some traits but stability in others during the last 30,000 years. Fossils from Strait Canyon, Virginia (radiocarbon dated between 29,870 + 1,800/-1,400 and 17,880 ± 150 yr B.P.) were compared with modern samples from the margin of the species' conterminous geographic range: Virginia, Colorado, Alaska, and Hudson Bay. Since the late Pleistocene a modification from narrow to wide teeth took place in the eastern populations but not in the western ones, and populations in Virginia apparently evolved wider confluence between triangles 1 and 2. Traits that remained stable through time in the Virginia area, but not necessarily elsewhere, include the numerical shape factors of the occlusal surface and the posterior loop. Potentially widespread stability is evident in the perimeter of the posterior loop relative to total tooth perimeter. Tooth length forms a geographic cline, in which both the fossil and modern populations from Virginia occupy the same position. A peripheral population from southern Colorado shows the most derived dental morphology. These morphological relationships suggest that mosaic evolution operates in arvicoline lineages and provide testable paradigms for future studies.

The high prevalence of furrows and pits ofthe Carabelli cusp, minor expressions of the protostylid(foramen cecum), and the low frequencies of cusps 5 and6, plus the behavior of the expression of groove patterncollectively suggest that this group reflects influences byboth the Mongoloid and Caucasoid dental complexes.Correspondence of trait expression in both the primaryand permanent dentition was also demonstrated (P< 0.05). Some of the non-metric trait frequencies alsoexhibited sexual dimorphism.

Neanderthals of Western Europe lived across distinct ecogeographic zones from Marine Iso-tope Stage 7 to 3. Differences in dental morphology from seven Western European sites are compared in terms of ecogeography and chronology.Neanderthals (n = 12) along a north-south gradient were examined. These included the Meuse River Basin of Belgium (Engis 2 and Scladina 1-4A ), Southwest France (Pech de l'Azé 1 and Roc de Marsal), the Pyrenees (Malarnaud and Montmaurin), and the Mediterranean (Hortus). Montmaurin is the oldest, followed by Scladina 1-4A and Malarnaud, whereas the others are younger.Dental casts were prepared from Neanderthal permanent and deciduous dentition. These were de-scribed and scored, according to the ASUDAS. Comparisons of dental traits with respect to ecogeo-graphic regions and chronological categories were constructed.Unusual dental features observed include the anterior fovea, entoconulid, metaconulid, and Cara-belli’s cusp. Dental traits that distinguish ecogeographic regions are the expression of the M1 hypocone and metaconule, whereas the hypoconulid and Carabelli’s cusp separate chronological categories. Dif-ferences are present for the entoconulid and metaconulid in both comparisons.Neither chronology nor ecogeography fully explains the results. Similarities in dental traits exist between Roc de Marsal, Pech de l’Azé 1 and Engis 2, and secondarily within the Hortus assemblage.
